Am I happy that Terraria was released on the PS3!
For people who have not heard of this game, it started as an indie game, with a retro graphic style.
This serves 2 purposes:
1. this is a throwback, a tribute to the 8 bit era, when games really flourished.
2. it is to remind us, despite all the flashy technology, that gaming is not about graphics, but gameplay.
You start off choosing things like difficulty, creating your character, etc. then you get started on your adventure in 2D side-scrolling goodness.
I'm not going to spoil it for you guys, but you get to use different items and weapons, different enemies, environments, and also get to meet other players in-game. The official description is: "Terraria is a land of adventure! A land of mystery! A land that's yours to shape, to defend and to enjoy. Your options in Terraria are limitless. Are you an action gamer with an itchy trigger finger? A master builder? A collector? An explorer? There's something for everyone here."
The experience is hard to describe, very much like Minecraft in 2D. It involves a lot of exploration and adventuring, bashing monsters, digging for ore, collecting materials, and assembling items. All I have to say is, you have to try it for yourself. All in a vibrant 2D presentation.
Too bad there is no physical disc for the PS3 US and EU markets, and I was quite disappointed. The trade-off is that the price is lowered. If you really must have the physical copy, this Japanese import version is the way to go.
However, if you are outside of Japan, you can consider the US collector's edition. The game would be DLC, but you get the bonuses which are quite fun to have.
