Previous reviews are making note that adjusting the "stiffness" setting doesn't seem to change the feeling of the D-pad that much. That's because that's not what it does. Nowhere on the box nor the manual says it's supposed to do that. The dial setting is marked "S" for "narrow", "*" for "normal", and "L" for "wide". I guess you could say "S" stands for stiff and "L" for loose, but it's nowhere stated as such.

What that "S, *, L" setting does do is adjust the range that the D-pad accepts a diagonal input. I set mine on "L" which is wide. It keeps me from accidentally sending fireballs when I really want to do a dragon-punch.

A very good fighting pad compared to the standard dual shock controller with a few flaws. After spending over a dozen hours I can safely give a preliminary analysis of this product. Firstly, I had pre-ordered this item nearly a month ago and with Amazon Prime, I received this pad late afternoon on friday the 26th so 5 amazonian stars to Amazon. After I opened this pad from its plastic rectangular box, I immediately plugged it into my system and started up SSF4AE went into training mode and practiced for a few hours, of course taking a break here and there. But before practicing with the pad I fiddled around with some of the options until I found my comfort zone and that took only a few minutes.

I didn't care for the turbo function nor the turbo speed level which I'm sure works fine and dandy for side scrolling shooters. I also left the switch on "DP" (digital pad) because I would mainly use this pad for fighting games although every game out there would work fine with this pad. So now, it was time to change the angle of the "DP" so I turned the dial to the right inorder to "free" the DP and went all the way to 20 degrees, 10, and finally 0. I found my sweet spot at 10 degrees to the right and locked the DP by dialing left until tightened. Lastly, I turned the pad over and there was another switch to tighten or loosen the pad for diagonal movements but unfortunately there was little difference between the settings and left it on "L" (loose) which still felt tight and rigid. And that would be the main flaw of this controller is that the DP is still inferior as far as the feel and execution compared to the Madcatz "floating" DP which I own as well. This time around, there is a switch on the shoulder buttons to either use the left buttons as right and vice versa which was an innovative design inorder to prevent using the same R1 and R2 face buttons.

The pad felt comfortable in my medium sized hands due to its odd but ergonomic shape and I was able to pull off most if not all the complex movements such as FADC to an Ultra consistantly but not as comfortably as a floating DP due to its stiff cross shape. The length of the cord is nearly 10 feet long. The buttons are larger than the dual shock however not as well spaced as a Madcatz.

Overall, a great alternative to the standard dual shock controller albeit a few flaws. Whether a casual gamer or serious one, you won't be disappointed with this. If you already own a Madcatz, this pad won't be an upgrade although being wired would make it tournament legal.

Pros:

Long cord

Comfortable ergonomic

Many options and switches

6 button layout

DP right angle option

Hori brand name

Cons:

Stiff DP even when "loosened"

Buttons questionable spacing

Improvements:

Floating DP

Better button spacing

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This is a great controller for gamers who want a more classic feel for their fighting games. Coming from the days of Street Fighter Arcade, it was hard to make the transition from large buttons and a joystick to a d-pad and thumb buttons, and holding a ps2-ps3 controller in one hand was difficult. This controller's unique design allows players to hold the left side of the controller tightly and use index and middle fingers to press the buttons. The controller feels well made and solid and the buttons are really satisfying to press. The buttons are large and make a solid clunk when pressed, like miniature arcade buttons. Another unique feature is the rotating/angling d-pad. Although I never found a need to rotate it, I'm sure that super serious fighters will swear that it makes all the difference. From the picture it was clear that this was missing the digital (wobble) sticks from the standard PS3 controller. I thought that this could make navigating menus between fights cumbersome or all together impossible. The manufacturer of this controller over came this with a switch in the middle that allows you to turn the d-pad into the left or right digital stick, an awesome idea. Although you still have to flip the switch, it is much quicker than picking up your standard controller. This is a corded controller but the cord is so long I rarely notice it. This controller also has a turbo feature, which although not really useful for me in fighters, was kinda handy in mmorpgs where you may need to press a button a few thousand times,(ahem..DCUO).

The only downside I have experienced with this controller is when you dominate your friends in Tekken Hybrid or Soul Caliber, they sometimes blame your "special" controller.

I recently purchased a PS3 along with Street Fighter X Tekken and wanted a good pad to use when I don't feel like bring out the stick. I was very familiar with the MadCatz FightPad line, but after reading some of the reviews for the Fighting Commander I figured I would give it a try.

Before even plugging it into the PS3 I noticed that the controller is surprisingly large. It does not come across in the pictures, but the controller is very thick and you could even say bulky. Regardless of it's size and the fact I have small hands, I felt the controller was very comfortable to hold and use. I would not hold the large size against it, it was more of a surprise than a real detriment.

One thing is for sure, this controller feels a lot more sturdy and well built than the Mad Catz controllers. The buttons are a good size and have a very nice feeling to them. In almost no time at all with the controller I was already able to consistently hit 1-frame links among other things. The control pad also feels very nice, and the fact that you can adjust the angle of it makes it even more comfortable to use. I cannot speak on the diagonal input adjustments as I have not used them. The default setting felt fine to me.

Overall I like Mad Catz floating dpad better, but in regards to the buttons and build quality, the Hori Fighting Commander wins easily. If you like fighting games (since this isn't good for too much else) and don't want to use a full arcade stick then I definitely recommend getting this controller.
