I've had the opportunity to play PS3 games in 3D. I've also played some games that use the Playstation Move. When I saw the opportunity to use both at the same time, I got excited. An hour later, I had given up on the gimmicks. 2K Sports dropped the ball on this one.

As far as basketball games go, I am a novice, having not picked an NBA title since Midway put out NBA Jam Tournament Edition for the Sega Genesis. A lot has changed since then besides the rosters. There is a lot more activity that takes place in the zone with all manner of different ways to drive, shoot, and pass. A painful omission for folks like myself is a tutorial or practice mode, especially for using the Move. The game mechanics are sound, the visuals are solid, and it feels as good as I imagine a basketball game should. That is, of course, as long as you stick with the standard controller and 2D.

Of the two feature-based faults, Move is the most painful. The need for a secondary controller is more than understandable. You have to be able to move a player and have some measure of control over the passing game. For just that reason, Sony has a handy little Navigation controller that includes a D-pad, analog stick, triggers and face buttons all in an easy to hold ambidextrous design. But NBA 2K11 doesn't support it. At all. You have to instead use a Sixaxis/Dual Shock 3. That also means you can only use the Move right-handed, making for some awkward motions for us lefties not to mention the weight and balance issues caused by the one-handed grip. Worst of all, though, is lag. Motion control has a delay in converting movement to a command. This is usually minimal and developers can do a little magic to compensate and reduce the impact on gameplay. I say usually, because NBA 2K11 did not. To reach and block a shot, you have to raise the Move. You lift the controller as you are supposed to, but your player doesn't do anything until the scoreboard is already updated with the two or three points your opponent just put up. The game is just too slow to respond to make Move a viable control method.

The 3D effects are less troublesome, but hardly perfect. It suffers some of the most blatant ghosting I've ever seen while left and right frames get jumbled even in scripted scenes like the elongated introduction with Michael Jordan standing alone in the tunnel. While MJ is in the center, there will be bursts with a more transparent image on either side. It is very distracting, but is at least limited once a game is underway. Unfortunately, with a mostly fixed perspective, 3D doesn't add much of anything to the experience. The depth is adjustable and it does work; I just don't see the point. If you are looking at buying the game and have the capacity to handle 3D, this version makes some sense, but there is absolutely no need to replace an already-bought copy of the game for the extra dimension.

It's rather strange that the 3D version is sold separately from the standard version, especially since it is still the same game and sold at the same price. Judging from the final product, it would not surprise me if 2K reveals that they never really planned on doing a 3D version, made the game, set it ready for retail, then went back to work on a 3D enhanced version only after the fact, releasing it on a more conservative distribution. It looks and feels undertested with regards to motion control and 3D. It is at least playable in 3D, though you're better off with a standard controller. You're dreams of virtual reality basketball aren't quite here yet.

NOTE: The issues with Move and 3D artifacting could potentially be fixed later on via a software update. Should this happen, I'll update these comments accordingly.
