When PES 2008 came out, I was as disappointed as most people with the quality of the game. It just seemed that Seabass and team had taken a huge step backwards. Not to say that I didn't enjoy it at some level and pour a large amount of hours into playing, but it just was not good enough for a next gen platform.

This time around, I was undecided whether to jump to the FIFA franchise. I went so far as downloading the demo but it was like playing through syrup so I decided to wait for PES 2009.

I'm glad I did. This time round, the graphics are slick, the music pumped up a notch and the addition of the Be A Legend mode is completely addictive. The ball physics are much more realistic and it plays an excellent game of soccer.

Not to say that everything is rosy in the garden the commentary is still inept, the lack of licensing can be solved with an updated option file (but when oh when is Konami going to realize that North American players want to use the option files created by their European cousins!!) and I have yet to try the online mode (I mainly play Master League so no biggie but the signup was tedious).

In general, and in concert with other reviews, this is what PES 2008 should have been. The core gameplay is fantastic. Now Konami needs to build on this with game modes, presentation and licensing that can match FIFA.

Besides playing online, this game is brilliant. The gameplay is awesome and has improved alot from last years efforts. If you love watching and playing football/soccer then this is the game for you. Konami's AI improvements have made it closer to reality where now in order to score and win you have to unlock the defense, find spaces, make intelligent runs and maintain possession. Loose possession in the midfield while attacking and you'll see how the AI takes advantage of your players being out of position.

There are many different game modes and the ones most addictive are master league (ML) and Become a Legend (BAL). In the first you take a team of average players and struggle through the lower divisions, buy and sell players in order to make it to the first division and eventually dominate all. The second mode, BAL, is essentially taking control of a 17 year old player and guiding him through the football career. This new addition to PES09 is very addictive and requires real understanding of football and the different player roles.

For example, if you are an attacking midfielder you have to constantly provide passes, regain possession, create passes that cut the opponents defenses and help your team in assists and scoring.

Overall this game is highly recommended.

Playing PES series since 1998, this PES 2009 is the best soccer title ever made on planet earth, while some like to point FIFA 09 for the "photorealistic" images, gameplay and true soccer physics are inside PES 2009 pack.

On PES 2009 we have the usual and awesome gameplay now with enhanced ball physics, 3D Kinetic motion engine, good looking graphics and last but not the least the incredible A.I., A.I. very smart and giving large hours of fun for beginners or professional PES players.

Licenses aren't problem because the missing team licenses can be fixed with the great Option Files for PS3 (Edit Data file), we just need to copy and it's done, names, logos, kits all good and official.

Offline mode is endless with all leagues, Master League and now the Legends modes. ONLINE mode isn't perfect yet but we can play very good now, nothing we can compare with last year's version.

This is a true soccer game any player shouldn't miss, great and unbiased reviews about PES and FIFA can also be found on site.

I think Konami is playing catch up for online gaming with this product. In Asia (Thailand etc.) most gamers are in arcade style rooms where they meet up with their friends and play together. From my experience you go to these gaming locations and either play with your friends or ask someone to challenge you. It is a lot of fun. So most of the gaming so far that I have seen in Asia (maybe except Japan)are done offline in gaming centers with friends etc. The Winning Eleven, Pro Evolution series I believe was more geared towards this type of offline game playing. Granted Pro Evolution, Winning Eleven series game play offline is very good and much better than any FIFA soccer games past or present. Now with the popularity of the Pro Evolution series in Europe, North America, etc. And the popularity of online gaming I don't believe the Winning Eleven or Pro Evolution gaming series were ever equip to take advantage of the online gaming platform. EA Sports FIFA is ahead of Konami on the online gaming for the soccer series. I honestly believe Seabass and company tried their best to be better with the online gaming for their product but they are still coming up short. The Pro Evolution 2009 still have online lagging issues. The 2008 edition was a complete disaster to say the least. It is a shame for such a good game with better mechanics than FIFA the online aspect can't meet the basic mechanics required for smooth online play. I guess they have to keep trying until they get this right. Hopefully Seabass and company will get it right for the PES series one day. There is no way the FIFA series is better than PES series when it comes to realistic feel like game play. If they get the online right I honestly don't think anyone would be talking much about FIFA. I am sure PES would blow FIFA out of the water altogether.

I have both the Xbox 360 and PS3. I was able to download both demos via Xbox live. Both demos were quite bad, to be honest. But I thought Fifa's demo was a little bit more polished. I was quite disappointed with Pro Evo's demo. So I made up my mind not to buy either this year and keep playing my PES5.

When both games released, I played both of them. I felt that Fifa was quite similar to the demo but Pro Evo was much more polished now and I was pleasantly surprised how much more I'm enjoying it. The "Be a Legend" mode is extremely fun. Btw, I bought the PS3 version because I read that there are some glitches in the Xbox version.

Saints Row 2 is the sequel to an xbox 360 only open world crime game. It is impossible to not compare this game to Grand Theft Auto 4 but if you give both of them an impartial look, they play very differently. Perhaps the best way to describe Saints Row is the "anti-GTA 4".

GTA 4 was one of the most massive games ever created. The expansiveness of Liberty City can be a bit daunting. The whole game just oozes polish from every polygon. The amount of resources that Rockstar must have poured into the making of the game must have been staggering. If this is the case, why are so many people's copies gathering dust? I can only speak for myself, but the game was lacking one very important thing. The game was just not fun. Despite all the polish, the voice acting, the story, I just didn't enjoy it.

The reason why I say all of this is because Saints Row 2 is almost the complete opposite. It is one of the most fun games I have played in recent memory. Then when you bring a friend along in co-op it just gets insane. Playing with another person over PSN is a blast as you cover each other's back blasting gangmembers, cops, and the Ultor corporation. It's hard not to crack a smile when your partner is speeding down the wrong side of a highway weaving through traffic while your blowing away your motorcycle riding pursuers with a grenade launcher. Not to mention the heaploads of customization options you can make to your protagonist, your cars, your houses, and your gangs. You can invite someone over just to show them your super tricked out rides.

Not that the game is perfect. The graphics are good, but not necessarily great. The colors in certain areas can seem a little washed out. The shooting mechanics could use a cover system a la gta 4, but you can grab anyone nearby and use them as a human shield which works out pretty good as well. Also the game has a plethora of adult situations and very coarse language. I'm not very squeamish when it comes to exposing responsible kids to a some PG-13 or even light rated R kind of stuff, but the thought of playing this game around an impressionable child makes me uneasy and probably shouldn't be done. So if you have young ones, definitely have them occupy themselves in another room or wait until after bedtime to bust this baby out.

All in all, if you even a casual fan of open world crime games, you owe it to yourself to at least give Saints Row 2 a try. Heck, you can even hit me up and I'll play with ya!!! PSN ID RellPhoenix

I must say, before this game came out I was really getting sick of these "serious" game titles like GTA4 and MGS4. I thought both had great gameplay mechanics but I felt like they were trying to beat me over the head with "morality" and trying to make you feel bad for doing immoral things.

Thanks to Saints Row 2 we finally have a title that doesn't take ANYTHING seriously (least of all itself ;) ). The humor is VERY juvenile and the story requires no thought what so ever (though it is very stylish and well-voice acted). But I think this is a good thing. You don't HAVE to feel bad about mowing over civilians and casualties in gunfights. You can just jump right in and have FUN.

The customization is awesome as well. The different clothing options are insane (and FAR more diverse than the overrated GTA4) as is your ability to customize (and keep) almost ANY vehicle to your liking. Also, you quite literally unlock different

clothes/vehicles/fighting styles/weapons for just PLAYING the game. I can't think of any other videogame that does that

The only bad thing I can say about Saint's Row 2 is that it can be taken as VERY offensive in it's portrayal of different ethnic groups. I realize that it's making fun of EVERYTHING it possibly can but be warned if you're easily offended by stereotypes.

In any case Saint's Row 2 is a game that gives players of sandbox titles exactly what they want: Fun without consequences :)

Let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of open world games. However, I just didn't find SR2 to be exciting at all. The wierdest part is that I didn't like GTAIV and I did like the action that started off in SR2. But then is dragged and it dragged hard.

Gameplay

Let me say that the game play is really fun. I did enjoy the fighting mechanics. They are easy and really fit on the PS3 pad. Shooting was a bit of a hit and miss but enjoyable as well. I only wish that they had a auto target system, but it still got the job done. Headshots were interesting to come by. The driving was really fun. It reminded me of GTA San Andreas. The cars are all great and the cop cars are really fast. It helps when you are on chases. Taking over helicopters reminded me a bit of the original Mercenaries. It is easy to do.

Story

This is where things got a little wierd for me. Now I know that most games don't always have you doing righteous things, but I really felt bad playing this game. We have all seen the bad guy that wants revenge thing before so this should be no surprise. But I was a little shocked when your partner guns down what appears to be some 60 year old judge. It just didn't feel right. Also, I didn't like the fact that you can't play the game straight. What I mean is that instead of the open design of GTA, where you could do only story missions or sidequests whenever you choose, this game forces you to do a whole bunch of side quests and mini games before it opens up the next story mission for you to go through. I found that to be extremely frustrating especially when you were getting into the main story and then you have your attention diverted to do sometimes pointless side quests. Being a cop with a film crew like COPS was interesting until your umptenth time of trying to get enough points to move the game forward.

Overall

I would say that there are some great online mechanics in the fact that you can actually take someone with you to help out missions during play. That was fun. But overall, the pacing is what killed me. Breaking up what was an interesting story from time to time just to do meaningless tasks in order to continue was really annoying. Especially when you get to the juicy parts of the game. But if you can stomach that, then there is a chance that you might enjoy the game. I would say that GTA might be a better fit.

On thing I hate about this game are the vehicle controls which made it hard to drive without crashing into damn everything. You'll become very frustrated with the vehicle controls in any of the chase missions plus the aiming could've been better.

In case this review is lumped with other PS3s. This is for the "Sony PS3 White 500GB Bundle".

What do you get in this package?

Well, an amazing 'super slim' revision of the PS3 console. It is much smaller than the original 'fat' model, or even the first 'slim' revision. I've read some negative reviews of the super slim, but I personally think it's a great console. It feels very sturdy, as does the top loading disc tray. In case your game disc gets stuck in the system, it will be easier to remove it.

The crystal white PS3 looks really nice, and it's about time that fans had something other than the standard black to choose from!

This is harder to find than the black or even the red super slim, so you might have to do some shopping around to find it.

PS. Besides the console, you get a year's subscription to PS Plus. Yessssssssssssssss. :D

I thought this game was going to be a lot better......Instead I get this crappy first person shooter......I am not to fond of first person shooters, unless it is the call of duty franchise or even socom franchise. To make this short and sweet, I am not pleased with this game at all......Totally thought it would be more than it was worth.

I am an avid top spin player...from the 1st one to part 4. I love the technical difficulty level and can appreciate every aspect of the game. That being said, I wanted to give an honest review of GST2. While it is very arcade like and has some major issues, it is REALLY fun to play. Sometimes I just want to pick up a game and play to win and have fun...and this game delivers. If you are trying to decide which tennis game to get, get top spin4 if you want to spend hours and hours of practice just to get to an average level. If you just like tennis and want something for a few hours of entertainment get GST2.

Also...the ball does go out in this game despite some reviewers.

The sequel to Grand Slam Tennis has finally arrived after EA postponed it's efforts to release it on the PS3 and Xbox 360 following it's June 2009 Wii release. As a whole, the game is solid but with some flaws. The original version on the Wii was a cartoony version with a big ball, etc. Fun & best they could do on the Wii. This one takes full advantage of the graphical power of the PS3 but fails in other areas. Nonetheless, if you're a tennis fan -the game's worth your while as it's fun to play.

Presentation: As usual, EA delivers on presentation. Most importantly, this is the only tennis game with the Wimbledon license and that's important since Wimbledon is considered the Super Bowl of Tennis. As with most EA games, menus are slick and easy to navigate. Lots of ESPN branding also, which is good or bad -depending on your love/hate for ESPN. On the downside, the lifeless commentary from Mac & Cash gets very repetitive (as with most sports games but worse). On the plus side, it can be turned off once you get tired of it. Camera angles can't be changed & replays can't be automatically skipped (you can do so by pressing a button each time they pop up).

Roster: Arguably the best among all tennis games with the understanding that unlike NFL/NBA/MLB, there's no Players' Association, therefore you never get a full roster. Nonetheless, most player likeness' are spot on -Current stars: Djokovic, Nadal, Federer, Murray, Tsonga, Roddick, Sharapova, Williams' sisters, Ivanovic & others. Legends: Coverboy Johnny Mac, rival Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova & more. Overall, the men's roster is way better than the women's. Most stars look great, especially Williams' sisters but some are a little off, particularly Chris Evert.

Gameplay: Solid -Somewhere between Top Spin 4 and Virtua Tennis 4. Lots of game modes including an easy career mode (10 seasons), online & ESPN Classic Matches, which are lots of fun! Create mode features Gameface, where you can download your own face from EA servers. The PS3 version also features PS Move compatability (Xbox does not feature Kinect). This is where I belive the PS3 version is slightly better than the Xbox 360's. Move works very well -particularly if you're a real life tennis player & know how to control the racquet well. As for the Dualshock, you can play the game with EA's total racquet control (rewarding once mastered). Like other EA games, no buttons just thumb sticks. The good news is you have a choice to play it with the buttons or a combo of both (which is my preference). I particularly enjoy serving as it requires good timing on your toss/hit as in real life. A bit unrealistic in the fact that's it's net play dominant.

Graphics: The game shines in this department. People will walk in while you're playing and think you're watching a real tennis match. Most player models (read above) are spot on, good animation and beautifully designed courts/stadiums. Best ever on a tennis game IMO. However, celebrations and such are a bit weak as the game, as a whole, lacks emotion.

Overall: 7/10 (3.5 round up to 4 stars). Good but overemphasis on net play. The game offers lots of modes and choices on how to play it. It features a deep roster with nice graphics. After having owned all 3 tennis games (TS4/VT4) at one time -for my money -I'd choose Grand Slam Tennis 2 slightly over it's closest competitor, Top Spin 4 -because Move controls work better, the Wimbledon license & I simply had more fun with it (probably due to replaying the ESPN Classic Matches -ie. Borg vs. McEnroe, '80 Wimbledon Final).

**UPDATE** After 3+ weeks with the game, the inability to contruct a point due to the overemphasis on net play really takes away from the game. Everyone rushes the net soon enough so it becomes a game of who can get there first. EA needs to patch this!

I don't usually purchase video games at full price, but after trying out the GST2 demo, I was hooked and needed to get it right away from a big box retail store instead of waiting for the usual online purchase/delivery.

You want a more realistic tennis simulator? You're probably better off with Top Spin 4. You want silly mini games? Virtual Tennis is for you. GST2 sits comfortably somewhere in between, which suits me just perfectly fine. If you just want a no holds barred and fun motion gaming experience for the PS3 move with best in class HD graphics, this game is also for you.

EA only focused on providing motion controls for this game GST2, not for Kinect and not for the Wii (first GST version came out a few years ago only on Wii). The focus on motion gaming on one console this generation really shows. I surmise that this game hasn't been as popular as Virtual tennis & Top Spin only because this game came out a WHOLE YEAR after Virtual tennis & Top Spin.

No denying, there is a bit of a learning curve with the Move & Navigation controller usage. Isn't that part of the fun? The challenge to get better at something? Just keep in mind for power shots, you have to keep the Move controller back before you swing. It'll start vibrating a lot and let you know that you're setting up for a power shot. I really appreciate this feature. And for serves, it's really fun serving with power once you get your timing right.

If your opponent is constantly rushing the net, practice your lobs to keep them honest. If they're playing baseline, a tear drop shot would work. Firing cross court shots or along the side line is really possible. If you're on the fence about this game, it might help to read the original Wii Grand Slam Tennis game reviews. It sure helped me and my decision. Many note that it's challenging but once everything "clicks" with the motion controller, it's all fun from there. I now concur with that assessment.

Other things I love about this game: The classic modes that were re-created are so fun. Plus, you can download other recognizable players that weren't included in the original roster for free by downloading other user created players, like Agassi, Lendl, Chang, Hingis, etc. My next move is to scan my own photo to create my player. How fun is that, to create your own player avatar with your own mug on it?

Granted, you will hardly experience situations where you or the computer opponent will be hitting it outside of the lines and into the net. And yes, it's not really accurate because in real life tennis, we all know that hitting into the net and out of bounds is a huge part of the experience. But you know what? That level of frustration, I can do less of in a video game!

It's more of an arcade style game, so the emphasis is on fun & fast game play. With the immersive motion controls, I really feel empowered like a world class tennis player because I really can determine which part of the court to hit the ball and with how much top spin, power, etc. The Move is the only way to play this game IMO once you train, practice, and get your timing down. And most importantly, I'm having a lot of fun doing so.

I bought EA Grand Slam Tennis 2 to play with the PlayStation's Move Controller, and I'm happy to report this is finally a tennis sports game that gets the use of the Move Controller right. We like motion gaming, active and as realistic as possible, and we're really enjoying playing this game. We stand in the living room, waving our glowing Move controllers and jumping about, having a great time.

in EA's Grand Slam tennis 2, you use the PS3 Move Controller very much as you would a real tennis racket. How you swing the Move Controller determines the direction of your shot, the spin on the ball (flat, topspin, slice), and the power of the shot. Swing low to high, get a topspin; High to low, get a slice. Angle your body (and thus the swing) to the left, get a cross-court shot. Prepare the backswing early, get more power. The direction of your serve is likewise based on how you swing the Move controller. It is reminiscent of the paddle control in Sports Champions' Table Tennis play, but on a grander scale. (Lobs and drop shots use the Move and T buttons on the Move controller, with direction and spin still set by the swing of the Move controller.)

We also use the Navigation Controller for controlling the location of our player avatars movement on the court. I haven't had a reason to use that in a very long time (Heavy Rain, I think); there aren't many games that support it. If you don't have a Navigation Controller, you can still use the joystick on the traditional PlayStation Dual Shock controller, or you can let the game handle the movement of your avatar. Left, right, playing the angles, taking the net, are all more interesting by controlling the player directly.

We have previously purchased Topspin 4 and Virtua Tennis 4. Whatever those games merits, their support for the Move Controller were extremely disappointing (absolutely worthless Move support, mere add-on gimmickry rather than real gameplay.) As someone who really enjoys motion gaming (Sports Champions is still one of our favorite games), I am really happy that finally there was a PS3 tennis game we could really enjoy.

We have previously been playing the Wii's original EA Grand Slam Tennis. For those familiar with that, this is a huge upgrade in graphics, yet the actual motion gameplay is very similar, and so, it was easy for us to pick up. Unlike the Wii remote motion controller, the PlayStation Move controller doesn't need to be "recalibrated" every few points, and you don't have to suffer the annoyance of the cord running between the motion controller and the Nunchuck.

In addition to the gameplay, you can organize matches in several ways: play singles or doubles against an opponent in your own living room. Play against an opponent on the Internet (EA Sports Pass required, code included with the game). You can also play against the AI in singles or doubles, or in a "party" mode that includes various unorthodox match styles such as Australian doubles (3some), lob and volley contests, etc.

For solo play, there is also "career mode" where you can invent your own player avatar and guide him (or her) through ten years of tournament play, slowly improving their abilities (speed, power, accuracy, net play, endurance) in the hopes of winning the Grand Slam. (In this mode, the game will "help" your play a little according to what abilities you've earned.)

For those interested in the visuals, Grand Slam Tennis 2 has two dozen current and past champion players (who play with the tennis style of those players), or you can design your own player avatar if you prefer. The venues include all four Grand Slam tennis events (Australian, French, Wimbledon, and US Open) as well as for new tournament locations in Dubai, Geneva, Shanghai, and Brighton.

Pat Cash and John McEnroe provide the audio commentary for matches. After a few dozen hours, once you've memorized all the chatter, you can turn the volume down.

For me, it's all about the Motion Controller Gameplay, waving my arms around and cursing my footwork; and I really enjoy this game. We've played Sports Champions as well as the Wii version of Grand Slam Tennis for years, and I expect to go on enjoying this new version for the PS3 Move many more years.

Pros: Nice shot options, pretty easy to learn, realistic representation of tennis

Cons: Not enough pro players, playing vs. cpu is unrealistic, graphics are so-so, not too many options, few tournaments not a realistic ITA season

Well playing in rookie and ameteur mode is just lame. You dish out bagels no matter who you play. But if you go to pro, it is almost impossible to win. You break the opposing player (sometimes it seems way too easy) and then he/she breaks right back. Or if you are up a break or 2 the cpu decides it will suddenly make you make errors, and play amazing error free offense. Also, the 1st serv return business is unreal. You can blast a 125 mph serve and the cpu returns it for a winner; unreal. Also, aces only occur on meaningless plays or if you are down 0:40 or 15:40 to the cpu on the PRO level. I have not tried the most difficult level yet, I can imagine it is impossible to win a point.

Therefore, this game is somewhat fun, but the cpu play is horrible. I have not tried online play yet, I hope it is a bit better and more realistic. This game was made with good intentions, but it is incomplete (lacks players) and it seems it was made too rashly (slapped up to make quick money)......This is not uncommon for EA sports games.

Finally, it is pretty lame that baseline players all of a sudden serve and volley when they are down, and then become unbeatable. Also, why does Djokovic have a one handed backhand, and why does Rafa serve and volley. Ultimately, in this game serve and volley is the most effective way to win points which gets boring quickly. If you play baseline, yeah you can win, but if the opposing player approaches the net he will either pound the ball for a winner, or make you run around, try to lob him to win a point, or wait for him to make a calculated error. This aspect of the game is very lame......EA, at least give the players their right shots :)

BTW, to prove my point on calculated errors part........if you are the first to serve in the match, and your first serve is perfect...............every time it will be a fault. I mean I understand it is a first serve, but even a weak yet perfect serve goes out. WHY?

I'm 34 and I play console video games regularly. I would have no interest in playing this by myself, but it is a good game to play with children. My 4 year old loves it and it is a great introductory game for young kids (simple controls, easy to understand tasks).

I just bought this for my kids! I have three children 11 year old son, 5 year old daughter, and a 2 year old daughter. They all LOVE this game! First I need to start off by saying the set up was a pain! Maybe because we were doing it at night and the lighting was not perfect? I'm not sure what the deal was but it took FOREVER for it to locate our floor. After we got past the section of finding the floor the rest was pretty easy. Some of the options were not easy to manage. For example my 5 year old wanted to change the pet's color fur, and some of the options or settings you would pick would not work. Then again some of those things could be that we are just not that used to this system yet. My 2 year old loved petting the animal with her hands, as she's not really old enough to use the controller. Both my 11 year old and 5 year old have been having fun playing games, drawing, dressing and changing the look of the eye pet. I got this game at first because there are not a lot of girl games for the PS3 and I thought this was one my daughter would love. It seems to be a good mix for all ages, and genders. Like I said my son has been having fun, he's been giving the pet a mohawk and such. I enjoyed playing the game myself, and thought it was good wholesome entertainment the family could enjoy. I would recommend this game!

I just wanted to post a review to warn parents out there about this game. The concept looks great and you would think this is a great game for your kids. Well, I'm here to tell you not to get this game. You and your kids will end up frustrated and unhappy. First of all, the load times are horrendous. Just going from one play area to another can take 2 mins of loading. Sometimes the game will lock up during loading. The announcer can't be skipped and talks way too much. You end up just sitting waiting with your kids asking why the buttons don't work. Finally when you get to the interactive part, the camera is tricky to set up and the controls are very difficult for a kid. Even for an adult the controls are tedious at best. If your kids make the mistake of clicking the "eye pet store" button on the menu, prepare to be taken out of the game into the PS store where you can BUY silly add-ons that should have been included for free. The worst part is that if they hit this button, it will take a minimum of 5 mins to get back to playing due to the slow load times. Just be forewarned. My wife won't even turn this on for our kids because she gets too frustrated.

We had the demo of EyePets for a months and the kids kept asking when we were purchasing the full game. For Christmas we purchased this newer version instead.

The kids were ecstatic and played it heavily for about 3 days. Then they played a couple times a week. Then they got bored. Now, they only play when friends are over and they want to show it off. Otherwise, they are much more interested in games with more creativity options (LBP), or games with more goals and rewards. This games delivers on being unique and interactive, and it can definitely be fun to play with the animal for a while. Unfortunately, it seems to fall short on things needed to keep the kids interested and coming back to play it over the long term.

I've got four daughters -the oldest turns 12 this month, and the youngest is 5. After just a day of playing, they're entranced. I'm just wondering how long that will last.

Great intro video, and nice introduction to the pet, "hatching" it and playing games that require you to use your hands, not the Move controller. That was actually a source of frustration, as the kids wanted to use the controller (we just got them, so the new factor hasn't worn off yet) and had to be coaxed to just use their hands. Once they understood, though, they had a blast. Dress-up is a favorite.

I was frustrated by frequent and sometimes insanely long load times (five minutes, at least, once the two new pets were hatched and the initial interactions complete -shorter if there's just one new pet being hatched, and shorter between other activities, but still a good minute or two with some regularity, though at least it has humorous load screens). Every time you switch activities, there's a load screen, and with two players they seem to be longer than with one. We've also had it appear to lock up -no indication it was reading/writing to disk, and no response to controls (even the PS button), but that's only happened once. Still, the load times are a turnoff for a game geared towards kids with short attention spans.

I was also frustrated by the controls at times. For example, another review expressed problems with this too, so I know it's not just us: coloring your pet or its clothes are rather hit-or-miss. You can point the controller at the correct place on the screen, press the button...and nothing happens. Try ten times in a row, and maybe on the tenth try it will work. I can't figure out what the issue is, but persistence appears to be the key here. Some changes are previewed before you make them (color changes) and some apparently are not (hair style/length). The entire dress-up mechanism is likely to be a favorite (if LBP is any indication), yet it's very frustrating for kids, and I hope it's improved.

Worth mentioning is that to start with, you can see a ton of outfit pieces -but can't try them on. You have to "buy" them with in-game currency you "earn" by playing games. That means the kid who would be content to just play dress-up with her pet and never do anything else will be forced to go try to figure out how do other things with her pet to earn more coins so she can buy more clothes to play dress-up. It's a great strategy in an adult game to get you to explore various gameplay mechanics or options, but I'm not sure I'm fond of it here. I don't want my kids to abandon the game because they can't play with it the way they want unless they do things that don't feel fun. Really, the RPG "grind" isn't necessary in a kids game like this, is it?

And if you haven't tried the EyePet demo, you should try it before you buy. As in the demo, you have to put the camera very low to the floor (within 30 inches, I think they recommend) and tilt it all the way down. You then play on the floor. It would be easier, I think, to have a large coffee table and try to use that as your playing surface -or, get down and roll around on the floor with your kids (if your back can handle it!). That means you'll be moving your camera, as all other games recommend you have your camera immediately above or below your TV, and ours (like most, I assume) is more than 30 inches off the floor. Just be ready for it.

SUMMARY

A lot of fun, at least at first. Annoying glitches and load times cost it a star or two, but there's a lot of potential here.

We haven't had time to explore everything there's a fair amount of content here, much of which needs to be unlocked by earning in-game currency, so I can't evaluate it all until we play more. We played this New Year's Day 2012, so if you're reading this a few months later and I haven't followed up with an update, add a comment and I'll followup with some details on longevity.

I played with this stick when E3 09 rolled around L.A. The manufacture was having a SF4 tourney to show off the stick. I looked at it and thought it looked cheap and I was right. IF you go into this expecting it to feel like the TE madcatz stick, you are going to be disappointed. But if you can get past the look and somewhat cheap feel of stick and buttons you'll be treated to a stick that to me feels better then the SE madcatz SF4 stick (the smaller white stick). The joystick and buttons are fairly responsive, I made it to top 4 in the E3 tourney and stick felt good after every match. I am unsure if this stick can be modded with Sanwa parts like the SE madcatz stick, but for the price I would much rather have this stick standard than the SE madcatz standard. If your hard up for cash but need a good starter stick this stick can not be beat at the price.

This is a cheapo budget stick. It works, but it's not great. "High quality" is printed all over the box, and this makes me pretty angry. It comes at least the third the price of a legitimate high-quality stick made of Sanwa or Hori parts, and this company has the nerve to print "high quality" on their box when it obviously is not.

Regardless, the buttons are kind of stiff but they are otherwise responsive and work just fine. The stick is a little problematic. It's got an "octagonal gate" in it but when I opened it up to take a peek at it, the corners on it were so rounded out you might as well have called it circle gate. This makes diagonals really difficult to hit consistently, which is a huge barrier in a fighting game that requires precision inputs.

Speaking of opening it up, there's a giant cylindrical weight inside. High quality weights!

In any case, if you replace the terrible circle gate in it with a good old square gate (A sanwa fits just fine,) the stick works SIGNIFICANTLY better and makes this thing a very plausible option for a budget stick.

I bought this a few weeks ago. My friend and I are big into Super Street Fighter 4 right now and I bought this as a transition to joystick play instead of d-pad. I am please with this. Again I have never owned another joystick since the NES so I'm no professional, but my friend bought a MadCatz SF4 edition joystick. I think his joystick might have been slightly tighter than mine, and his was definately bulkier and heavier. But otherwise handled the same. A good buy at a great price, unless you really want to pay $120 or more for a joystick.

i purchase this stick on early march for about sixty bucks not forty like the website dreamgear advertises. but the stick actually is playable, if ur a first time user and looking for something on a budget go for this. i actually bought a sanwa restrictor gate and it fit, but the game gameplay was horrible so i had to take it out, i also bought a bartop and it fit, but my experience with gameplay still sucked so all the parts i bought were for nothing (there just spare parts for my Madatz stick). this stick does look like it can be moddified but the buttons look like a problem bcuz when i first opened the stick, the buttons were molded to a controller pcb, the only thing i saw u can actually modd was maybe the joystick (replacable), but the buttons looks like a pain. and yes the buttons are kinda stiff but i got use to it. but the design is pimp and im actually gotten good with this stick that ill proly use this just for kicks have u seen the fighter on the stick looks epic! :)

pros: it works, long cable 13ft i believe, compartment for the cable on bottom of the stick, very funny artwork, and its an arcade fighter.

cons: feels cheap, modding looks like a pain, stiff buttons, buttons are molded to a pcb.

u get what u paid for!

Want Arcade Fighter (Black) Discount?

This is a budget stick, but it can go a long way. You will be paying a fraction of the price of the quality sticks.

I like to play competitive online and it was frustrating to keep missing those diagonal moves and tiger knee motions. However I followed another reviewer advice and purchased a Sanwa Octagonal gate from a well known auction site for under ten bucks. To replace it you just pop out the old one and pop in the new one (look it up on youtube, extremely easy) With this new gate I can get pro-like performance. I will agree with the other reviewer that the original octagonal gate was almost a circle, just replace it with a sanwa and the results are impressive. No need to shell out big bucks on the $150 sticks, just purchase this one and a $10 octagonal gate.

I already knew that this game was a blast, but i never thought that all my friends would jump into it gladly. This is not only a game, it's a great setlist for your friday/saturday drinking with friends time. DJ hero is far superior then dj hero2 when it comes down to the mixes (IMO), but you should buy dj hero2 party bundle and then buy dj hero, due to its great price.

I apologize for the grammar errors, i'm not a native english speaker :)

Yes, this is another music game. Yes, you will have yet another piece or two of plastic that is completely useless without the DJ Hero games. And it isn't without a number of minor issues. But, even considering all of that, this game deserves 5 stars. Here's why I think that is the case:

Almost every track in this game consists of a mash-up (two popular tunes mixed together to create something you've never heard before). This offers a fresh take on familiar songs, which will make anyone who may just be sitting around listening to you play enjoy the experience a bit more in addition to making everyone want to dance. I cannot say enough good things about the musical content and depth of this game.

Then you have the controls. They are an entirely new experience; even for those of you who've already become experts at most every other instrument available for play in music games. You'll tap buttons on a spin-able record with one hand while using the other to adjust the fader and perform various other nifty tasks. The complexity seems lacking early on, but the game will quickly throw some serious challenges your way. It's a lot like the focus required to play the drums on Rock Band or Guitar Hero; only with a few more bells and whistles, easier and more responsive controlling, and it's a damn sight more enjoyable (and, mind you, I LOVE playing drums on those other games). There are also two different scratching options, no matter whether you are right or left handed. It really lets the player personalize their experience.

One thing most anyone will be able to appreciate here is the fact that you CANNOT fail. You'll earn more stars for unlocking things the better you play, but the game won't lead you halfway through a song, just to throw curves at you and make you start over. Further, most things are thrown together as collections of setlists; meaning you move directly from one track to another without having to sit through loading screens after each track.

You may experience the occasional failure of the controller to recognize your scratching, or being hypersensitive to the fader slides. But that's really all that hinders this game. And it happens much more rarely than I'm used to with other music games. Is it worth owning? YES. Buy it now. Buy two turntables and a microphone! Your guitar controller may even come in handy from time to time in DJ Hero. Trust me, this is not your average music game.

This product is terrible. It actually worked pretty well for about 5 minutes. The rubber tips on the ends of drumsticks almost immediately flew off so any noise dampening effects were now nill.

So I put the rubber tips back on and super glued them in place. About 5 minutes after the next use a drumstick literally broke in half. The fitting that screws the two halves of the drumstick together wasn't glued to the bottom half of the drum stick very well.

Since it was only 10 dollars it wasn't worth my hassle to return so I just threw them in the garbage. Not worth the hassle. Just buy the silencing pads or go to guitar center or something and pick up some real plastic/rubber sticks that don't unscrew in the middle.

Just about every single aspect of this product was truly awful. Firstly, within 3 minutes of getting them out of the box, the rubber tips had flown off, thus starting a 30 minute game of "Find the small objects in a 20 foot room".

One glob of glue later inside the tips and they held for a little longer, although, within two hours of regular use, the rubber on one of them had split, rendering the pair useless.

Added to this is that the sticks themselves are ridiculously heavy, considering they are built to hit plastic drums, and for some bizarre reason, they are split into two parts with a screw thread in the middle. Something which led to them becoming loose during play.

Worth it only if you want to spend £10 on something to throw at your cat.

Buy Mad Catz Noise Reducing Drumsticks for Rock Band Now

I only recently bought the Rockband 2 music system, and the stock wooden sticks that come with it feel terrible, they are supposedly Ludwig 5B's but they don't even feel like 5A's. The wooden sticks don't seem to respond properly with the Rockband 2 drum heads like they might with a real drum set. Hence my purchase of the MadCatz composite drum sticks.

Don't be fooled, these are hefty weight, however the rubber/silicon tip covers provides a really nice bounce off of the drum heads, if you like lighter drum sticks you will likely hate this product, but if you like hefty 2B drumsticks you might like these for practicing, I know I do.

The problem with them is one thing, the rubber tip heads come flying off while you are playing, you don't even need to see them fly off you will notice immediately that something is not right. The simple solution to that is to use instacure modeling glue, just a drop will do, this stuff drys in 1 to 3 seconds so don't put it in the tip and squeeze the tip together else it's done for. Instead simply put a drop or two into the rubber tip, and then quickly put the tip back on the drum stick and let it dry for an hour or so (yes it's done in 1 to 3 seconds, however it might come flying off again if you don't wait the hour). Now the tip will no longer come flying off.

The other trick that we use is where the sticks unscrew to break them down into two pieces is we put an Oring, large enough that it leaves a ridge around the stick on the "male" threaded part of the stick, then screw the sticks back together. You might wonder what this does, well for us it prevents stick slip, the oring helps to prevent the stick from sliding through our hand. Yean I know that's one of the purposes of the rubberized mini grip that comes with the sticks where you screw them together, however that doesn't do it for us, that to us is simply a way of knowing if the stick has slipped or not by whether or not we can feel that piece.

So, with the newly glued rubber tip caps, and an Oring, these are great sticks for people that don't have to have wood, and who want hefty weighted drum sticks and in my opinion they work perfect with the Rockband 2 game, however NOT to be used on a real drum set EVER!

The games included in this product have each been out now for several years on other systems. Rather than review the gameplay and ramble on about my thoughts on the stories, I have decided to simply do a brief Q&A on just what you should expect to find with this particular product itself to try and help you, as a customer, be properly informed. That being said, I hope you find these answers helpful in your decision making process.

Q. What games are included that I can actually play through?

A. There are two games included with your purchase that you can play in full. The first is the original Kingdom Hearts (however this is the Final Mix edition (which, long story short, is a tweaked and slightly renovated version of the original classic that was originally exclusively released only in Japan). The second game included is Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. Both of these have been beautifully remastered in High Definition for this release and truly look stunning and also feature enhanced gameplay mechanics. In addition, both games come with their own set of trophies (and yes, two platinums).

Q. Wait...Kingdom Hearts Final Mix and Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories? What about Kingdom Hearts II?

A. Kingdom Hearts II (released in 2006) is NOT included in this product.

Q. What about Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days?

A. You cannot play Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days with this purchase. HOWEVER, there is a "Theater Mode" which will allow you to view roughly 2 hours and 50 minutes of remastered HD footage (in the form of cinematics) from the game (as well as some new additional scenes). Believe it or not, there is trophy support available for this.

Q. How many discs are included inside the box?

A. Both games (included the cinematics for "358/2 Days") are all bundled up into one solitary disc.

Q. Tell me more. What kind of trophy support can I expect from this release.

A. As stated earlier, both Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories will have their own set of trophies that each have their own platinum. To be more specific, Kingdom Hearts will have 56 trophies, and Chain of Memories will have 48 trophies that can be earned. In addition, the cinematics for Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days will also have a total of 6 trophies that can be earned (none of which are platinum).

Q. Is this a good value? Should I purchase this? Can it be purchased on PSN digitally?

A. As far as I know, for the time being of this review (9/10/13), neither as a whole or individually can this game and its contents be purchased digitally through PSN. To my knowledge, and upon further research, there are no plans for now to release these titles digitally (though that could easily change). Is the price of $39.99 a good value for what is involved? Absolutely! Whether or not you should purchase this is purely up to you. If by some chance you haven't played any of these titles, don't worry, I'm not going to sit here and type up a bunch of spoilers for you; I'll let you figure that out yourself. If that's the case, all the information I'll provide you with is that if you like Disney, and if you like RPGs, and if you're familiar with the Final Fantasy franchise, then you'll definitely find this to be highly entertaining. Personally I only played the first game before I headed out to college. For me, this is a great opportunity to not only relive the original classic, but also to experience something new in the sequel. Regardless of my own personal experiences, you'll be treated to both games (and the cinematics for a "358/2 Days") being presented in spectacular and eye-popping HD. Plus, and as mentioned countless times before, if you're a trophy-buff like me, you'll find plenty of those to be unlocked here.

So for now, these are just a few simple questions answered that you may have wondered or were curious to know prior to purchasing. By all means, please feel free to leave any further questions in the comments. I'll gladly answer them (if they are to my knowledge) as soon as I get the chance.

I hope that you find this review helpful in your decision making and whether I am asked questions or not, I will certainly update this review as I have more time to play the game itself.

*If you pre-ordered through Amazon, you should be e-mailed a code to download a free Dynamic PS3 theme. I was just emailed my code.

**UPDATE** So now that I'm home from work, as promised, here is my segment on the art book that comes with the Limited Edition copy.

Q. What is the art book like that comes with the Limited Edition?

A. The art book is actually a part of the case which holds the game together. As stated before, all of this is packed onto one disc (which you will find at the very back of this wonderfully illustrated hardcover book. Yes, that's right, it's hardcover. Personally, I thought that the book was going to be a separate piece, however the way the bundled it all up into one unit is very convenient. As for the artwork itself? All I can say is that there isn't quite much, but for what we do get the images are a beautiful and true behind the scenes look at the characters and items from the game that we've all grown to love throughout the years. In fact, there is even an intro in both English and Japanese (neat)! Is this a worthy addition? Well if you pre-ordered this through Amazon and got a free upgrade to the Limited Edition, then absolutely! If you end up reading this review and making a purchase later, I'd still say as long as its nothing more than just a few bucks pricier, go for it! Yet if it does end up being around five extra bucks, then I'd suggest simply sticking with the Standard Edition. One minor complaint worth noting is that the by packaging the game into the book itself, it is larger in size than a standard PS3 case would be. So if you are worried about the item fitting on your gaming shelf, then I'd recommend sticking with the Standard Edition to prevent any complications.

So let's get through the cons first, because there really is only a few of them:

1. The CameraWhile they have fixed the camera to the right joystick, there is still sometimes some camera issues. Is it better than the original PS2 release: absolutely! But there are still times when I want to throw my controller through the TV because the camera won't adjust the way I need/want it to. So be prepared for that. While it has been improved from the original release.

2. Not as "HD" as you would make it out to beWhat I mean by this is that it's suppose to be a remaster. While I don't expect everything to be perfect, there are some points where the game looks extremely pixelated or looks a little funny. I'm not sure if it's because they didn't remaster all pieces of the worlds or items in the game, or if it is something else. But it's definitely noticeable. It's a small con though. But it is not remastered like the way FFX has been displayed. Things are smoother and cleaner, but not everything is so smooth or "HD" looking. Once again doesn't change the fact that the game itself is phenomenal. Just a little strange.

Pros-

1. Finally you can play your KH1 & Chain of Memories on your PS3 (except for those with backwards compatible PS3's, you lucky jerks!)! So you get a trophy system this time around, and also a wireless controller that works well. (Once again, minus the lucky Back Compatible PS3 people.)

2. Final Mix in USAWe finally get all of the additonal bonus content that was in the Final Mix. It has never been released in the US, so unless you imported it, there is lots of new items, abilities, etc to try out!

3. Updated controlsThe controls overall are more similar to KHII, which I find to be a welcome change. Triangle is back to do a lot of things that couldn't be done quickly in KHI originally.

4. Relive the magicAs corny as this sounds, you can now share this experience the way it was meant to be shared with friends, family, children, etc. I have been having an amazing time going through the series again. And the additional Chain of Memories, and Cinema 358/2 Days is great! This is a great way for Square Enix to get people back in the saddle and caught up with the whole story before KHIII will be released, (Hopefully 2015!).

Here's to hoping that a KH2.5 with KHII, Birth By Sleep, and Re: Coded is coming! I don't think it will come with 3DS due to how it was recently released!

I fondly remember the general sentiment of, "Wait, they're doing what?" When Kingdom Hearts was first announced. "The people who make Final Fantasy are going to make a game with Disney characters? That seems insane."

Truth is, it's still kind of insane. Looking at the series now, a decade later and with several games available, it's all pretty darn weird. Still, I was immediately hooked once I got my hands on that first game on the PS2, and I've been invested in these characters ever since. Because Kingdom Hearts didn't just let us wander around Agrabah with Aladdin or explore under the sea with Ariel. It wasn't just an action RPG with a lot of Final Fantasy cameos. It also introduced us to Sora, Riku, Kairi and a host of other people that I've come to care about — most of them brought to life by a star-studded voice cast that was pretty ambitious for its time.

Yes, the story can be… complex. There have been a lot of "Wait, what is happening? I'm so lost" moments since Kingdom Hearts II, and trying to keep everything straight across multiple games that span multiple game systems is not the easiest of tasks. Still, I have legitimate love for this universe and this gameplay. I'm sure it doesn't hurt that I was young when it was introduced, but I still like it now.

Now, Square Enix and Disney have remastered and re-released the oldest titles in a PS3 compilation, because that's the hip thing to do these days. The original Kingdom Hearts (technically, the Final Mix version of the game that was never released in the US), the oddball, card-based sequel Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories (which was originally a Game Boy Advance game, but which was later remade for the PS2 as a necessary narrative link between Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II), and the weirdest entry: Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days.

While I haven't played through those first two games to completion in this HD ReMix, I played enough of both to know that if I had a week or two of free time at the moment, I would be absolutely willing to go back and play those games again after all this time. They're not perfect, but they hold up well.

Going back was weird in some ways. Having grown accustomed to the newer games in the series (Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance on the 3DS being the most recent example), the original game felt a little slow by comparison. There were gameplay elements I've become accustomed to that don't exist here. But all that said, it holds up surprisingly well for a game that's more than 10 years old. The fresh coat of graphical paint helps, of course, but it's still a fun adventure regardless.

Chain of Memories is the game I particularly want to spend more time revisiting. I only ever played the GBA original, so seeing it in full 3D here, with voice acting and new cutscenes, is all new to me. While I'm sure the card-based gameplay has never been for everybody, I personally thought it was a nice change of pace from almost every Kingdom Hearts game before or since. It, too, seems to hold up well from what I've been able to see so far.

358/2 Days is the weirdest entry in this collection not because it's name makes no sense at all (and it sounds so ridiculous when you try to say it out loud), but because it isn't actually a game in this collection. Instead, it's a series of cutscenes from the original Nintendo DS game strung together to make a sort-of-movie with all the game's plot points. I didn't time it as I watched, but it was probably three hours of content at most — and if you care, all of the game's trophies are obtained simply by watching it all and scrolling through all the unlocked journal entries. Easy peasy.

It was probably a smart move to turn the DS game into a series of movies rather than convert it into a PS3-quality game (which would have taken a lot of work and redesigning), but that doesn't mean it's the most fulfilling way to experience that story, either. The way the narrative is organized, with CG cutscenes interspersed with a few paragraphs of text here and there, can be really confusing — and I'm saying that about a story that was pretty hard to follow in the first place. The story jumps around quite a bit and it doesn't always make sense. After watching it all play out for a couple hours or so, you may still have to pull up Wikipedia just so you can have someone explain to you exactly what just happened.

Still, that's better than nothing. If you're someone who only owns Sony systems, there was previously no other way for you to see this story at all (outside of YouTube playthroughs, I guess, but that seems less than ideal).

Now that we have this great collection, I hope rumors of a Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD ReMix prove true. Specifically, I hope it really does contain at least KH2 and the PSP game Birth By Sleep, which seems like it would translate to the big screen nicely (and was already a great game, to boot). Not to mention how excited I got at the tiny teaser Square-Enix gave us of Kingdom Hearts III, which should be finally coming to the PS4 and Xbox One at some point (sadly, it's probably still a long while off).

Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD ReMix is a good way to either get excited for the series for the first time, or to remind yourself why you cared in the first place.

... The camera problems were never fixed. I have to say it is the most annoying thing about the game. I know you can switch the camera preferences but both suck either way. Otherwise this game will blow your socks off and if you played it as a child you will be reminded on how your socks were blown off before. This game looks gorgeous under 1080p especially with the new character models.

The art book? Oh my gawd, that art book. I don't want to ruin it now but the incorporation of the art book is phenomenal! That's all I'm going to say about that.

I must say that Donald and Goofy also do not have an option to care about Sara first. I can't tell you how hard it makes the game when they only heal each other. Playing on proud mode is that much harder when your allies aren't very smart (or wasn't given the option to be).

Get this, get it now.

Also I understand putting the DS version of a game is impossible to put on one screen, but making a game of just cinematics is crazy.

"The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena" was such an enjoyable game for me that it killed me that one significant flaw kept the game's fun level down. (I'll go into that below.) Aside from that, you get two games on one blu-ray disc. In fact, one of the opening screens upon booting up offers you a choice to play "Escape From Butcher Bay" or "Assault on Dark Athena", much like a movie DVD/Blu-ray menu, so the games are separate and are on the same disc. So you really get your money's worth, IF you haven't played "Escape From Butcher Bay" before, which I hadn't.

"Escape From Butcher Bay" is an engrossing game that really (even being 5 years old) takes first person shooters into a different direction. You are able to interact with a whole cast of believable characters, many of which are better scripted and animated than ANY of the non-playable characters in "Fallout 3." The next-gen gloss really makes everything shine--no pun intended. The character models are very detailed and the backgrounds and levels are very sharp. Another reviewer complained about the graphics and I have to say I am shocked by that. There are very few times the graphics are anything less that next-gen. "Assault On Dark Athena" is built on the same engine and has equally sharp graphics and an interesting cast of highly detailed characters.

The stories for both are very much part of the Riddick universe and canon, with "Escape From Butcher Bay" being the one mentioned in the actual movies. I would say the story for "Escape From Butcher Bay" is superior to "Assault on Dark Athena", but not by much. Both are very detailed and your main quests (and side quests) add a lot of depth and time to the playing experience.

I thought the controls were very good and the selection of weapons was particularly generous--though I preferred the Ulaks, as they were quite lethal for silent kills or melee combat. The other weapons were nicely detailed and animated and it was always cool to walk into a room, shoot out the lights, and turn the Riddick eyeshine on so I could see in the dark.

The sound is great and many have mention the top notch voice acting. I have to agree, the voice acting was superb and it even has some musical cues from the movies.

The enemy AI is rather good and relentless. It really forces you to use Riddick's stealth abilities (which include the awesome eyeshine, where he can see in the dark) to perform quick kills.

Riddick, at times (in both games) can step into robot-like suits and then use them against the enemy. This is fun and adds variety. In "Dark Athena" he can even take over and control the zombie like soldiers, in certain areas.

Now to the issues that keep this from being a solid 4-5 star game. Well, the checkpoint save system is the worst I have seen in a long time. Many times you will be down to one health block and you move ahead and it automatically saves you progress there. You die and you start back there with one health block. If you die enough, the game generously gives you another one and I have heard if you die enough, then another one. But this save system saps the fun out of the game by constant loading screens and then you finding out you have a large amount of enemies or big enemies to fight, BUT you only have one to two health blocks. It is very tiresome and adds a lot of deaths and restarts. Also, the map system in "Escape" (which is actually non-existent in "Dark Athena") doesn't help at all as it doesn't show your location or direction on the map! These two flaws seriously affect an otherwise awesome gaming experience and that is sad.

There's some minor glitches I noticed like one of the cut scenes had dialogue spoken, but there was a serious delay to the characters lip-synching. Also, there was some slowdown and choppiness.

Overall, it is a fun game despite the flaws and glitches. I had a great time, though cursing at the screen from time to time, and I think most will enjoy the game if they can overlook these problems.

3/5 stars

Pros:

*15+ hrs. of gameplay.

*Great graphics for the character models and levels.

*2 games for one price.

*Well constructed levels, with multiple non-linear routes.

*Controls are pretty solid.

*Enemy AI is good.

*Sound is good.

*You get to play as Riddick with Vin Diesel voicing the character.

Cons:

*The worst checkpoint save system that results in many loading screens and many deaths due to reloading with few health blocks. (Should have had a nice hard drive install to speed up loading times or do away with them.)

*Enemy AI can get too good in some areas and also, while the game developers want you to be sneaking around, many enemies carry flashlights on their guns which makes sneaking almost a gimmick.

*Map in "Butcher Bay" is terrible and no map in "Dark Athena."

*A few glitches and slowdown.

I have the PC port of Escape from Butcher's Bay from 2004 and loved the game. I don't play too many games on my PC anymore and was debating whether or not to spend the money on this game. I'm definitely glad I did. There are two episodes to this game. The first is a remake of the 2004 release "Escape from Butcher's Bay" and the second is an all new campaign "Assault on Dark Athena."

Butcher's Bay is as good, if not better than I remember from 2004. There's plenty of ways to play the game and there's more than one path to get to some places. All of the FPS, stealth an melee elements work really well together and the game does a very good job of making you feel like Riddick.

What worried me is that the reviews I read indicated that if you've already played through Butcher's Bay, then Dark Athena might not be worth a rebuy on it's own. It doesn't matter. It's been 5 years since I played Butcher's Bay and it still holds up so well that it's definitely worth it on it's own. Dark Athena is a good addition and makes the package worthy of full game price. The environments are varied and interesting, but the story is lacking polish and continuity. Loose ends are left hanging, like SPOILER "what ever happened to Johns? Isn't he supposed to leave with Riddick at this point?" END SPOILER The game shifts gears into shooter territory for a little while with some neat foes, but brings back the stealth elements before the game is done.

For those wanting a game with a decent story to follow, gameplay variety and a good cast of characters, this package of Butcher's Bay + Dark Athena is a very good choice.

I just picked up The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena and I have got to say Its a great Game! I really like how they put the Butcher Bay story in the game as well. I liked how it showed some of Riddick's past on how he got his Eyeshine even though we all know it was from Surgery. The butcher bay graphics are decent not bad but sometimes a little blurry. What I really like about this game is the difficulty of it I am on Normal and it seems like a hard mode which is a blast.

One you get the hang of Butcher bay the weapons and combat is a little hard at first but once you get used to it, its flawless and the killing and neck snapping action. The blood and the terror of the tortured people in the cells or that are trying to run free is just a great version of a prison also the pit brings the reality of the game out.

On to the Dark Athena part of the game. The graphics are crystal Clear, and amazing. The sound is where it should be and Riddick's Eyeshine is really neat in the darkness. I really like the way this story worked out with the weapons and the characters. I especially like how Riddick and the Capt have a history together and they are going to fight it out hopefully. I will just say Riddick is right "the dead should stay dead" and that's where you come in. I also like how you can sneak up people and since your used to the fighting from Butcher Bay you should be good to go with fighting and sneaking around.

Overall this was a great purchase I enjoy these games a lot and I look forward to beating Dark Athena soon. I will be looking forward to possibly a multilayer or something along those lines. I recommend purchasing this game 2 great games in 1.

Want The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena Discount?

Say what you will about Vin Diesel, but the man has the character of Riddick nailed down. His performance is so convincing. This disc includes the original Riddick episode, Escape From Butcher Bay as well. The two chronicles are very similar in gameplay design. In fact, there isn't much variation to speak of. The mechanics are the same, and both are essentially stealth/action. Butcher Bay features a more compelling plot in my opinion, but Athena is most certainly worth your time. These games really shine when is comes to setting a particular mood and atmosphere. They really suck you into the experience. The voice work is amazing. Each character is realistic and sympathtic in their own unique way. The in game map system is rather...well...terrible in Butcher Bay. And Dark Athena doesn't even have one. This is typical of developer starbreeze. I suppose they prefer that you figure it out on your own. There is a rather steep learning curve, and the difficulty can be rather punishing. Great games though!

So, it sticks. It was pretty cheap and the delivery was prompt. It looks real pretty, so I would give it 5 stars. One problem, though. The sticker overlaying the power button blocks me from being able to use said power button or eject button. I ended up just having to not use that sticker. That being said, I have put it on, taken it off, and put it back on again. The adhesive doesn't leave any nasty marks on your PS3, it looks as airbrushed as it looks in the pictures, and flaming skulls.

Note: I going to concentrate this review on the "extras" found in the Collector's Edition. My reason being that if you are thinking of purchasing the Collector's Edition, you probably are aware of what the game is like.

What exactly is Dark Souls? It's a spiritual succesor to Demon's Souls, and in reality it might as well be called Demon's Souls II. The game is very atmospheric, very beautiful, eiry, and of course very challenging. As in Demon's Souls, dying is something that is a natural part of Dark Souls. The game is meant to be challenging, and if you played Demon's Souls you know exactly what to expect. If you did not enjoy Demon's Souls, there is no point in purchasing this game. If you did not play Demon's Souls, you might want to purchase that (it's only $20) before purchasing the more expensive Dark Souls. Now, for those of you who are definitely going to purchase Dark Souls, is the Collector's Edition worth the extra cost? The answer, it depends...

First, if you pre-ordered this game, you got the Collector's Edition at NO extra cost! So in that sense, yes this is clearly a wonderful bonus! If you missed out on the pre-order (the Collector's Edition is now sold out), should you pay extra for a copy? Well, here is what is found in the Collector's Edition:

1)First thing you'll notice, it comes in a beautiful and large steelcase (or steel case, steelbook, whatever you call it). Note that it's not real steel of course, but most likely tin. Nevertheless, the case is very well done, and holds the game and arbook.

2)Limited Edition Artbook: it's nice. I'm not a huge fan of game-related artbooks, but this is a nice hard cover artbook. It's not the size of a "normal" book (I consider normal the size of a sheet of paper or 8.5" x 11"), but substantially smaller. Still, it fits snuggly in the steelcase.

3)Mini-Strategy Guide: this is available as a DOWNLOAD only!! Boo... I hate download only items. I would much rather have had the strategy guide be available in hardcopy and have the artbook as a download. I don't know who decided this should be a download only, but I would not give that person/people a high I.Q. rating...

4)Original Game Soundtrack: this is available as a DOWNLOAD only!! What? the beautiful soundtrack...download only?! Yes, that's right. Another "brilliant" move by marketers who are oblivious to what their customers want.

5)Behind the Scenes Video: this is available as a DOWNLOAD only!! Yes, yet again, you are left stranded with a donwload only.

6)A Card to Redeem items 3,4,5.

So there you have it. The items that in my opinion truly make a collector's editions special (special strategy guide and game soundtrack) are download only! I consider this very lame. Yet, I gave the game 5 stars... why? Well, because I can't deny the fact that all these bonuses were given for free! This collector's edition did not cost (originally) any more than the regular edition. The regular edition is a 5-star game in my opinion, and the collector's edition is the same thing with FREE bonuses. So, it's up to you to decide whether these extras are worth the "extra" cost (since you likely will not find the collector's edition for the original price any more). Also, keep in mind that prices will vary. You might be able to find the collector's edition at only a "little" more than the original cost, and other sellers will ask 2-3 times the original cost. As I said, it's up to you, but hopefully this review has helped you decide one way or the other. Either way, let me say that the game itself is still fantastic...

For those who have played FROM Software's Demon's Souls (itself a spiritual successor of FROM's King's Field franchise and what many would consider to be 2009's game-of-the-year) for the PlayStation 3, Dark Souls will feel immediately familiar, as the controls and play style are pulled directly from it and expanded upon. The same can be said for nearly all other aspects of the game.

It should be noted that this is NOT a sequel to Demon's Souls, as it fleshes out its own original tale and does nothing to further the reality and mythos of Demon's Souls aside from sly winks, subtle nudges and the occasional DEMON THAT WANTS TO BURN YOU WITH ITS FIERY EVERYTHING.

Even within the tutorial level, the game quickly gets you up to speed on the controls and type of game you're in for, one of patience and exploration and existence as meat (somewhat literally, as you start off rather "undead", resembling a bipedal stick of jerky) to be tenderized by every punishing enemy that can reach you... if you're not careful. After the tutorial you are placed at what can loosely be described as a hub, or bonfire, but it's more of a branching off point where the land of Dark Souls can take you down many paths, each showing off a unique and darkly beautiful environment to explore and conquer. While each of these paths is considered accessible, you'll find that you might not yet be prepared to traverse them until later on, once you've leveled up your character and equipped them with better armor, weapons and items.

And that is where the bonfire comes in to play. Scattered through the lands are unlit mounds marked with a sword, waiting for you to come and ignite them, where they then become resting places/refresher points. By refresher I mean that that newly lit bonfire is where you will respawn should you happen (Oh, it WILL happen) to be killed. So there is some comfort in that, and also in the fact that whenever you return to a fire your consumable health flasks, known as Estus flasks, will be replenished, along with spells and miracles if you decide to put focus in using magic. Now by rest I mean you can take comfort in that spot, knowing that enemies, unless currently chasing you, will not interrupt you as you sit by the fire and take the souls collected from each enemy slain and trade them toward improving your character's stats. The downside? Touching the fire resets the world, so all minor enemies return to their locations ready to battle you once again. So choose wisely the times you wish to touch the flames.

I mentioned souls gained from enemies, and they are important, as it is your method not only for leveling up your stats, but also purchasing an array of items from merchants and others NPCs.

With many games these days inviting a "run and gun" type of mentality and a fair amount of hand-holding, it takes a bit of reconditioning to understand that with this game it pays to think logically, as Dark Souls adheres to rules. There are clues within the layout of the land regarding where to go and what secrets lie ahead, and every enemy is beatable, even at low level stats, by studying movements and method and knowing the right equipment to go in with. This game is all about bettering yourself, and thus feels incredibly rewarding with each land successfully journeyed or boss demon defeated. And the treasure that comes from that? It's best left unspoiled what you'll come to possess.

The combat in Dark Souls is some of the best combat I've encountered in any game, with each weapon offering its own style and moveset, from long-range to short, slashing, cutting, blunt, piercing, so many options and secret weapons to discover and build as well using blacksmiths. Each set of armor provides its own strengths and weaknesses, and there's a level of balancing that doesn't allow any weapon to feel over-powered or game-breaking. And if it starts to because of how high you've leveled? Just wait until you carry over into New Game +. And as I mentioned, battling feels fun and intuitive because of the logical nature of the enemies. Logical but not bland.

A lot of people have wanted to know more about multi-player. It's been ramped up significantly from what was offered in Demon's Souls, while still maintaining that "This is my difficult journey through a harsh and desolate land" feel. Some nice carry-overs from Demon's Souls are the blood stains and ghosts. Blood stains can appear on the ground in your world and when clicked on, you'll see the last 10 seconds of another players in ghost form, leading up to their death. It's a nice touch in providing the player an idea of what might be in store for them. Players can also sometimes just briefly appear visible in one another's worlds. You can't interact with them, and they only appear doing what they are doing in their game for a few seconds, but it helps to add a bit more ambiance to the game.

Further multi-player options are done using certain stone items. One stone, an orange soapstone that you can buy early in the game, allows you to write messages on the ground that get displayed to other players, just as theirs are displayed to you. It's helpful for hints, tactics and if you want, trickery. If someone chooses to recommend a message, the person who wrote it is rewarded immediately with a boost of health. You have the ability, once awarded a white soapstone, to join other players or have them join you for some aid in felling the demons. But just as easily through yet another stone, players could choose to instead invade your world as a black phantom (or vice-versa), seeking to destroy you and collect your souls and restore their humanity, as the more human you are, the more inclined certain NPCs are to speak and deal with you, as well as other perks. That was as far as things went in Demon's Souls. Dark Souls, however, really makes things interesting.

The game offers you the option through various interactions to join covenants. By pledging allegiance, you are opening yourself up to new opportunities, usually regarding multi-player, that are incredibly unique. One such covenant awards you black armor and sword and sends you to other worlds to slay those who choose to maliciously invade players, thus avenging the victims, but only if the victim submitted the invader into the Book of the Guilty, which acts as a WANTED list. Another covenant allows you to place a glowing sign on the ground, which appears in that same spot in the games of three other random players, who then encounter waves of black phantom enemies that spawn from the sign, until the player is either killed (thus awarding the sign layer souls) or one of the three players finds the sign in their world and crosses through it to hunt down and kill you. Potentially all three could enter your world, and then you better be running. That's just a small example of the possibilities that covenants can offer, but be careful of which you join, because they do not take kindly to those who break it, but even that presents its own interesting opportunities.

I can't say enough about how beautifully designed the world is. There is a staggering amount of variance with each path you take, to the point that you're surprised you've found an area that looks so surprisingly new and different. It's amazingly how intuitively intertwined it all becomes as well, with shortcuts opened as you progress and multiple ways to get around. And sometimes you'll catch yourself looking far off in the distance, even if that distance is somehow ABOVE you, and wondering if you can get there. Yep, you can. Demon's Souls managed to be pretty with a palette of grays and kept that feeling of dark, foreboding emptiness. Dark Souls takes that, splashes it in many parts with color and STILL manages to keep that same wonderful, moody atmosphere. And FROM really allows their environments to sing and provide ambiance on their own, without constant background music for that evocation. Music is there, and it's thrilling and moody and fitting, but saved for certain moments. Everything else is soundtracked by the fulfilling clang of swords, the echoing water drops in a far-reaching cavern, the sound of a dragon's lungs heaving somewhere in the dark. That's music in and of itself.

OVERALL:

If I had to say something in the negative regarding this game, it would only be that there are times, despite how intuitively the game is laid out, that you can get a bit lost or confused on where to go next. But in my experience, it's never for very long.

Dark Souls takes everything about its spiritual predecessor, Demon's Souls, and enriches and improves upon it with bigger worlds, a wider array of enemies and locations, more weapons, more secrets, more items. Armor serves a greater purpose and can be upgraded, multi-player is all the more exciting with new play options and a chance to be saintly and helpful or insidiously vicious. Upgrading weapons and armor makes more sense and offers a variety of paths to improve your stuff, sound is rich and atmospheric, and bosses are absolutely epic.

Oh. And yes, crystal lizards are still in this game. BUT! They continue to respawn until you manage to kill them. Huzzah!

This title feels like a more well-polished, more well-defined version of what Demon's Souls should have been. On its own, Demon's Souls was a fantastically challenging game, but the mechanics (particularly menu navigation) were a bit overwhelming at times. Dark Souls seems to have improved upon this model with a more intuitive menu system, and they even seem to have tweaked some of the action mechanics as well, while still keeping the spirit of the game intact. This franchise (the same as King's Field before it) will always be about learning from your mistakes and playing intelligently for a more rewarding experience. I've only spent about two hours with it, but already I can tell that I'm going to be getting just as ensconced in the world of Dark Souls as I was with its predecessor. Bottom Line: This is a 5-Star game for those who love a challenge built into a well-crafted world/storyline. All those looking for quick thrills and even quicker bursts of playtime should move on to other game franchises.

When I finished playing Demon's Souls back in 2010, I wrote in my review that it was my favorite game of the current console generation, and that still holds true today. The game was a truly unique and innovative RPG in a generation that, despite being full of many great games, isn't going to be remembered so much for its innovations in game design. So obviously, I was chomping at the bit to get my hands on Dark Souls, the game the developers have touted as the "spiritual successor" to Demon's Souls. After putting nearly 90 hours into the game, I can say that Dark Souls is every bit as good as the masterful Demon's Souls. Dark Souls has made some key changes to the design of the previous game, yet at the same time maintained, and even refined, all the characteristics that not only made Demon's Souls such a great game, but also, a breath of fresh air.

The biggest change Dark Souls brings to the fold is the introduction of a singular, interconnected game world. Not so much an "open world" like Skyrim or Red Dead Redemption, but more so a series of fully explorable areas that are connected by at least one passage (think Super Metroid). This gives the game world a much greater sense of not only mystery, but dread as well. Where as Demon's Souls gave you much more guidance by providing a peaceful hub world leading to the separate areas of the game, Dark Souls drops you into the middle of its world without any sense of where you are supposed to go. You will receive vague hints from NPCs, but it's up to you to find your way around, and this makes you feel not only more isolated, but also makes achievement even more satisfying. As you learn your way around, you'll slowly begin to see how the world is interconnected, and you'll marvel at the absolute genius behind the design of the world (which manages even to trump its predecessor in level design). The same dark, dreadful and isolating vibe that oozed from Demon's Souls levels remains here, and is amplified by the sense of scale you get from this world. Atmosphere plays such a dominant role in this game; Dark Soul's atmosphere is so thick that it is basically an ever-present character in the world, continuously following you around.

A key change also comes in a more forgiving checkpoint system, represented by various bonfires that can be lit and serve as not only as a place to rest and replenish, but to upgrade & repair weapons and armor, manage your inventory, and eventually, warp to different bonfires you've previously visited. I found this to be a much smarter design than the "start from the beginning" method employed by its predecessor.

Despite these changes, Dark Souls remains one of the purest, most challenging, and most enjoyable games to be released this console generation. The combat remains among the finest of any game ever made, demanding patience, practice and cunning from the player. Your enemies remain fierce, intimidating, and sometimes terrifying. The different types of weapons, armors and items, as well as they ways they can be upgraded, has exponentially increased over what was offered in Demon's Souls. The multiplayer component, where hints from other players can be left in your game world, where partners can be summoned to aid in battle, and where you can invade another's game or be invaded yourself, has been given a new dimension of depth with the ability to join Covenants. And the boss battles are still the most epic and sinister of any other games out there. From Software, the developers, have successfully kept what worked in the first game, made changes where it counts, and still turned everything on its head with the newly structured world. The game feels familiar, yet fresh. Fans of Demon's Souls will be pleased. For first-timers with the right amount of fortitude, Dark Souls will be a revelation.

Demon's Souls is still my favorite game of this console generation. I'll never forget the first time I stepped into the imposing world of that game, and how I slowly realized that the developers were quietly revolutionizing the RPG genre. Yet despite this, I can still say that Dark Souls is the better game of the two. It feels less fragmented, more masterfully crafted, and most importantly, more fully realized. This is a game that is retaining the essence of the hardcore RPG experience while setting itself apart from its contemporaries by combining brilliant design with stellar gameplay to create an experience that simply isn't being matched by anyone else. Dark Souls is another masterpiece from From Software, a developer who is daring to be different by reaching further than most others would dare, and is striking gold by doing so. RPG fans would be doing themselves a disservice by missing this game.

A NOTE ON THE COLLECTOR'S EDITION: I ordered this version of the game, and I'm glad I did. The metal case is very handsome, and comes in a hard plastic slip case to protect it. A code that can be redeemed for a downloadable strategy guide is included, although I didn't use this, as I don't like to play games using guides. Best of all is the hard cover art book, which features drawings and paintings of most of the game's enemies and bosses. The creature design in Dark Souls is really stellar, and having this book is a treasure for big fans of the game. Overall, I feel this edition was well worth the $59.95 I paid.

Want Dark Souls Collector's Edition Discount?

I purchased the collector's edition. Yes, it was a free upgrade, but the final product was pretty laughable if you compare it to other video game collector's edition.

First off, finding any information on what was actually included was pretty evasive. Even the game website didn't have a concrete answer. Lots of speculation on which regions were getting what, but no hard fact information. When it did arrive, it was a metal tin, and included with the game was a DVD sized art book (The pictures are pretty small, with very little description or explanations, and honestly pretty forgettable.)and the rest of the content was downloadable from the website. The soundtrack is gorgeous, but the map and player guide (especially if you've already played Demon's Souls) aren't very helpful. There's information on classes and how the attacks work, but nothing about weapon stats or armor upgrades. Luckily there's a online wiki in the works that will hopefully answer in more details things the players need to know.

I'd say skip the collector's edition and buy the regular game.

Two other things also stand out. The frames per second drop to some pretty horrendous and inexcusable numbers. It seems like the developers were okay with certain encounters barely being playable. I first experienced this in the forest area with the "bear-cat" and his added friends. It lagged to the point of unplayability. Again, no excuse for that.

The other issue is multiplayer. As of this writing don't buy this game hoping you can run some areas with friends in mind. It probably won't happen. There isn't a central server like there was in Demon's Souls, so the chances of you and your buddies being in the same server world are slim to none. Even more frustrating is that Namco/Bandai/From Software have been silent on any upcoming changes or patches regarding this. The most players have gotten is a step by step guide on how to try to connect (which the player base already knows) Hopefully this changes, but even a "we're looking at it" comment would go a long way with customers.

The combat system is incredible and the visuals are pretty astonishing in a lot of the areas, and yes if you played Demon's Souls you'll probably love this game.

Although still a great game, it feels certain aspects were rushed, corners cut and not thoroughly tested. I certainly hope there are future patches to address the issues to make this the truly great game it could be.

*Updated rating to reflect patched improved co-op, and all around fun.
