This will be short and sorta sweetrefer to the comments I'll tack on for a much more detailed critique of this game, for those who are interested (ie: serious baseball geeks, like me).

This year's version of The Show is again clearly aimed at serious baseball gamersmeaning people with a somewhat fanatical interest in a baseball game that plays out like a real MLB game. Meaning accurate player models/performance, believable gameplay, reasonable statistical outcomes, and most of all, challenging to play. Arcade gamers should look elsewherethis is clearly a very serious baseball simand as for the "fun factor" (many criticize The Show series for this), I'd offer that it will likely be a lot of fun, but only for fans who are looking for a challenging game of video baseball, with all the ups and downs that entails. One guy said it perhaps most succinctly: if you grew up, as I did, playing the heck out of the Strat-O-Matic baseball board game, you will recognize MLB The Show 2011 as the visual representation of what you used to love about that game: real stats from real players, and real baseball game outcomes. And, I might add, outcomes that you have a lot of control over, but NOT complete control. More on that in my comment section.

This review will be mostly for people who like to play out a full season vs: the CPU, with their favorite team (single player Franchise mode). I'll mention the other game modes (Road To The Show, Home Run Derby, on-line play, co-op play) only in passing, since I don't use those modes much. I also think it's useful to state one's own background and baseball experience, when offering a critique of this game for others, as what people will/won't like about this game will largely be directly related to that. I am 56 years old, played competetive baseball from age 7 up through a college level, and have remained an avid fan to the present day. I have played most of the pc/PS baseball videogames over the years, starting with DOS-based pc games, up to the present PS3 generation of games. I play through a full season vs: the CPU on All Star level of difficulty, using my home town Chicago White Sox, and ensure each year before I start the season that all the rosters are up to date, and accurately reflect the current real teams. What I want out of any baseball game (board games through videogames) is a realistic baseball experience, that isn't easy to master after a few tries. MLB The Show 2011 is clearly for players like methose seeking an arcade style baseball game, where you can win games, hit home runs, and strike out everybody with regular ease, should look elsewhereyou'll be incredibly frustrated/annoyed/humiliated by this game, if that's what you're seeking. But for those baseball fans like me, THIS is your game: read on.

The new addition to this year's game is the use of the right analog stick to control hitting, pitching, and fielding (baserunning still largely button controlled, same as last year). However, one of the best things about this game is the flexibility it offers: you can play with the old button controls if you don't like the right stick, or you can play with any combination of old/new gamepad controls. For instance, I am playing this current season using last year's zone control/buttons for hitting, but the right stick for pitching and fieldingmore on this below.

To hit, you pull the right stick back(down) as the pitcher is in his windup, and push forward(up) to "swing". It's largely a matter of timing that affects the outcome of any swing, as the only "aiming" you have to do with the right stick is left or right, as you push it forward, to hit pitches on the inside/outside part of the plate. The CPU automatically adjusts for whether the pitch was high or low. I went back to the old button control for hitting after a number of games, but not because I was having all that hard a time with it....it just simply didn't "feel" like hitting to me, especially because of not having to consider whether the pitch was high or low. "Swinging" with the left stick, and having to aim the left stick to a specific zone where the pitch is, to successfully hit the ball (last year's mechanism) just feels more like hitting to me. But to each his ownhitting has always been challenging in The Show series, and this year is no different, regardless of what control you choose. See my comment section for WHY hitting is hard. Hint: it's not because of the controls.

Pitching with the right stick is a major upgrade, IMO, compared to last year. You still select the type of pitch you want with a button, but then pull back on the rt stick to start your windupthe height of the pitch(high or low) depends on how close you come to releasing your pitch (forward on the rt stick) when a meter bar approaches a white linehitting the white line exactly when you push up on the stick means a pitch on the leveltoo soon or too tardy on the release affects the up/down location result. You are also required to aim your upward push of the rt stick to hit the spot laterally, where you aimed before the windup startedhit it exactly, and the pitch USUALLY winds up where you intendedthe more off the target you are with the upward stick motion, the less accurate the lateral location of the pitch. I have stuck with the rt stick for pitching, as I find it much more challenging and interactive than the old model. It IS harder to avoid walking CPU batters, as a result, but much like hitting, success with the analog stick for pitching depends on more than just accuracy with the stick. Comment section for more on that, but in short: strategy, and some baseball know-how/experience counts.

Fielding with the rt stick has some issues, IMO. I use it again because it is much more interactive than the old push-a-button-and-hope-for-the-best mechanism. You move your fielder with the left stick, and throw with the right. You push the stick in the direction of the base you want to throw to, and then a tricolor meter bar will rapidly appear below your fielder. Throw when it is green, and the throw is always on the mark. Throw in the yellow, and it usually is, but better fielders will have better throws when it is yellow, and the chance for an error higher with a less skilled player. Throw in the red, and it is almost always an error, and usually a seriously wild throw, no matter who the fielder is. Pure fielding errors/bobbles on batted balls still seem rather random to me, howeverthough this is supposedly based on the individual fielder's real MLB skills, I'm not entirely conviinced of this yet (ie: I've already had to watch Sox fielding wizard, and future Hall of Famer, Omar Vizquel, bobble a number of routine ground balls). So this is OK, since it's way more engaging now to field, and PERHAPS takes into account more of the individual player's fielding skills, but it has some serious issues, IMO, that affect gameplay a lotsee my comments again for details. Just be prepared for making LOTS of errors, when you first start playing the game. The learning curve isn't all that steep, though, so keep at it. It IS more engaging than last year.

The graphics are again stellar, and easily the best of any sports game on the market currently. Player models are unbelievably accurate and detailed, as are individual player batting stances, pitching motions, and mannerisms. There are a number of new gameplay animations from last year, which add to the fun factor in playing a game. The stadiums are also more detailed and individualized, as are the crowds. The noises of the ballpark and gameplay are also spot-on, with the result being that the incredible visuals in this game greatly add to the gameplay experience. It's totally immersive, and looks like the real thing. All they need to add now are the smells of hot dogs, peanuts, and beer......

The announcers, alas, remain the single weakest aspect of the game, and a main reason why I don't give this game 5 stars. Eric Karros has replaced the annoying Rex Hudler, but Matt Vaskurgian and Dave "Soup" Campbell are back. Karros stuttering, gee-whiz delivery is probably an upgrade from Hudler's ridiculous schtick, but the other two unfortunately have very little new scripting involved in their announcing of a game. It's obvious that very little effort went into upgrading this aspect of the game, and it's too bad, because it was old last year. MLB2k does this WAY better, though the rest of that game remnains inferior to The Show. More in my comments again, but for now, that's all I have to say about THAT.

Rosters are fairly complete, though again most minor league players are fictional characters. It seems that real players exist only for players who have played some games at the MLB levellikely a licensing thing, I suspect.

Not a big deal, though, since again a major strength of this game is that you can edit just about everything, and create players to your wishes as well. Players are all rated for a number of skills, that affect individual performance and gameplay results, and you are free to edit any player that way, should you think the ratings are wrong. I have found that most ratings are OK, with the consistent exception that many fairly fast players have relatively low speed/running ratingsso I edit those accordingly, as I come across them. For on-line users, the game again updates rosters, based on real MLB changes, on a weekly basis.

Other modes again include Road To The Show (I don't use this, but consensus I hear is it's also much improved from last year), Home Run Derby (to satisfy, somewhat anyway, the arcade-game seekers), and on-line play (still apparently a serious lag problem, though), and co-op play, where up to 4 players can play a game at the same time. I'd refer readers to other reviews for a critique of these game modes, since I rarely use them: playing a full season vs: the CPU is all the time I can manage.

In summary (guess this wasn't too short after all): MLB The Show 2011 remains the best baseball game on the videogame market, by far. It has it's appeal mainly to serious baseball fans, though, and will likely be "too hard" and "no fun" for more casual gamers, especially those who don't understand that the best MLB teams LOSE 4 out of every 10 games. I'll add details in the comments section for those interested, as the season moves onand I get more games played, and comments are welcome.

I'd have to agree.

Maybe it's the fact that I've purchased this game since '08. Maybe it's because this game is so good that it has spoiled me. But I can't help but feel this franchise has reached its peak and is starting to level off.

First things first, as usual, the graphics are amazing. You've seen the screen shots, watched the YouTube videos, and maybe have even played the demo. If there's one thing The Show fans can count on, it's photo-realism. One graphical complaint I do have is the sky textures. Would it kill them to put in some clouds? Or in night games, maybe the moon? Stars? With so much of the game taking place from the batter's point of view, the sky is constantly on screen. It's just so.. blah.

The new gameplay mechanics utilizing the analog controls require suburb timing, making pitching and hitting challenging yet engaging. Analog controls are also added for fielding.

Also, a pretty important change I'd like to mention: no longer can you simply guess the pitch type and have the game automatically give you the location. For example, in previous versions, you could guess fastball and sit changeup. If the pitcher threw a fastball, an indicator would flash at the exact location where the pitch would end up, whether it was a ball or strike. In '11, you now must guess the location along with pitch type. Simply correctly guessing the pitch will not reveal the pitch location, upping the difficulty of hitting even further.

Returning this year are Road to the Show and Franchise.

RTTS has improved somewhat. Remember those annoying goals, like "Hit and Run" or "Drive in the Run"? Those are a thing of the past. It was a broken system. You'd attempt a Hit and Run, but the pitch could be far out of the strike zone. If you swung at it, you'd invariably miss the ball, failing the goal in the process. Now, each at-bat is rated as Poor, Good, or Excellent. From my experience, there is NO way to gain negative points during an at-bat. Even if you end up hitting into a double play, you could still earn points (albeit, not many).

As usual, you'll spend about two seasons in the minors before being called up to The Show. If you're lucky, a player in your position will get injured or traded, allowing you to ascend the ranks much more quickly.

Franchise allows players to manage everything from ticket prices to concessions. It's essentially the same as last year. Running a team can become a little tedious, especially dealing with injuries. If a player on your MLB roster needs to spend time on the DL, you will have to call up a player from your AAA roster, call up a player from AA to replace the AAA player, and basically do it all over again in reverse once the MLB player returns. And injuries are COMMON. Of course, you could always set all of the tedious decision making to AI control, which is what I did.

One thing that annoys me to no end in Franchise is the way MVP awards are decided. Just like in previous versions of The Show, pitchers are awarded the MVP award at an alarming rate. In real life, a pitcher has won the MVP only once since 1987 (Dennis Eckersley). Since there is an MVP award for each league, that's one pitcher out of the past 46 MVP awards bestowed. In The Show, I've played five franchise seasons and SIX pitchers have won the MVP. Yes, in three of those seasons, both the AL MVP and NL MVP were pitchers. That's unheard of!

The commentating is just foul at this point. Matt Vasgersian has probably not been in the recording studio since '08 other than to say a few new names. Dave Campbell is back to add absolutely nothing to the experience. Where's the excitement? Where's the inflection? Why does everything sound so forced? Eric Karros is new to the booth and an improvement over Rex Hudler (who WOULDN'T be an improvement over Rex Hudler?). But it's marginal. Karros has more energy, but his lines are still painfully generic. Of the three commentators, Karros sounds like he had the most fun in the recording booth.

There have been reports on multiple message boards that the game is prone to freezing. I've personally experienced instances of freezing. The very first time I loaded the game, it froze during one of those opening montages. Next time, it froze on the trade screen in Franchise mode. Luckily, the game hasn't frozen during an actual game.

One other minor gripe has to do with the Home Run Derby. First, there is absolutely no unique broadcaster commentary for this mode, just the muffled PA announcer in the background ("He's down to two outs!"). There's no golden ball as the final out, which could have been a cool touch. And there are no kids running around in the outfield shagging balls! Honestly, when I watch the home run derby on TV, I get a kick out of the kids diving for balls and trying to catch pop ups. I think that would have been such a great addition! Instead, you're just hitting balls into an empty outfield. It just feels a glorified session of batting practice.

Many of you die-hard fans probably think I'm being too tough on this game. But hey, if I buy this game four years running, my expectations are going to be high. Sadly, this game feels like what perennial sports games should never turn into the $60 yearly roster update.

If you are new to the franchise, buy it, hands down. But if you own The Show 10, I'd wait for next year.

I've had every edition of this series since it started, and I've grown accustomed to the great graphics and the slick presentation. I've always found, though, that the playability needs quite a bit of tweaking to make the gameplay realistic. Thankfully, you have the ability to make these changes with the dozens of settings that you can customize with using the slider bar. I will say that this year's game seems the hardest to play in the MLB series and after hours of tweaking the gameplay settings, I still can't get this right. My beefs:

1. Hitting has become exceptionally hard which is fine if it works both ways (i.e. hard for the AI as well), but it doesn't. I've abandoned the analog controls for now as they are not consistent and seem 'off' a bit (for lack of a better word). I was a very good hitter in the '09 & '10 editions but this year, it's much more difficult. I'm up for a challenge but I think the AI needs to be impacted as well. I'm scoring 0-3 runs per game and haven't hit double digits in hits 22 games into my season (with the Tigers, and there are some good hitters in that lineup). Too many grounders and soft pop flies to the shallow OF.

2. Piching is regressing year-over-year. The AI seems to have no issues hitting whatever I throw at the plate and has the plate discipline of Tony Gwynn or Wade Boggs with every batter. Whereas my pitchers struggle to hit the corners consistently, the AI does so with ease. Guys with a 5.00+ ERA in real-life are studs in this game. There is absolutely zero forgiveness when pitching. I also think this game is to the point in its development where needs to improve pitch recognition and pitch physics. While it has always been tough to see balls vs. strikes on borderline pitches, this year it seems a little more difficult. I don't think there is enough recognition separation between pitches with 15 to 20 MPH differences. I actually think MLB 2K is better in this area. Other than 12-6 curveballs, pitches tend to be flat across the board.

3. Hits into the corner are seldom doubles. I think this game has always struggled with effectively scaling OF speed, throwing accuracy and throwing velocity. Not enough drives into the gap fall. This needs much tweaking to get right and, again, for some reason I have not yet been able to find that elixir in this year's edition.

4. Stealing is, as always, tough. Not enough separation in catcher skills between those you cannot run on and those you can thieve all day. It's been this way for years.

All in all, I do enjoy the game but I'm now looking at MLB 2K11 as a diversion to the somewhat unrealistic gameplay that The Show is becoming more and more. The Show, graphically, blows away 2K11 but in my opinion playing the game is why we buy them.

First off, let me state that I come from the school of thought that if they had done nothing but update the rosters I would consider the game awesome, so what I have seen so far deserves A+ in my opinion. Secondly, let me add that I have no interest in analog control. I tried it for about 30 seconds. I don't see that it adds to the experience for me at all. I am all about playing Franchise on All-Star level with my Cubs and Yankees and I have only played some pre-season games so here is what I can offer.

Graphically I see improvement in terms of the appearance of the players. The biggest thing I have seen with limited playing time is that the movement of the players in the field is, to my mind, significantly more life-like. They move toward the ball in a more natural fashion and I have noticed that if you try to change direction they are not able to turn on a dime, but have to slow down and will move in a much more realistic way. Each individual player's range is actually a factor. I noticed that Soriano will bumble a little bit in LF--I have personally seen him drop flies like a little leaguer (those of you who know Strat-O-Matic will understand when I say he is a definite "5" in LF)so no one can claim this is not realistic. While I am still feeling my way through the settings (that's what Spring Training is for) I am starting to really appreciate the broadcast camera view. I am still getting used to it and it can be a little deceptive when fielding , but the look of it is really pretty.

I have also noticed that the hitters will take their sweet time in between pitches. It can be a little frustrating if ,like me, patience is not your best trait but it is very realistic and really adds the relaxed pace that is a game. And on the subject of issues that arise with a lack of patience, I loooove the balk feature. And I learned you have to be careful. I was getting beat and getting frustrated so I started to hurry and balked a guy from first to third and he scored on a hit. If you don't like it you can turn it off, but I love having to come set . Again--the real feel of the game comes through.

I think the commentary, while largely the same, has improved. Karros is heads and shoulders above Hudler--he speaks in a more relaxed, conversational tone that adds to the leisurely ambience that is baseball--not goofy and on fire all the time.I almost fainted when I heard interaction between him and Vasgersian, when Matt asked him if he agreed that C.C deserved CY Young consideration!

Hitting is very challenging (see edit) challenging, and it almost seems like pitchers are mind readers in foiling your location guesses. You have to be patient, work the count, be aware of pitcher (and umpire!) tendancies. After I had a strike called on a high pitch clearly out of the zone, I took a chance that the wiley pitcher was going to try and get away with that location again, and roped it for a single. I have not tried the contact swing too much, but love the idea that with a 2 strike count you have the option to try to protect a little bit and cut down on the strike outs. The cancel throw feature is also a great idea.

The game is even more visually stunning than last year and I haven't even scratched the surface of what I will see as I am planning for the first time to play all the Spring games to really get a feel for the game and my roster and build that anticipation toward opening day!

If you really love baseball and have the patience for hitting, with no arcade expecatations that you will hit a homer every at bat this game is a real loving tribute to America's past time, and really done in a first rate fashion.

A tape measure home run on this one for me!!

EDIT:

I have played several more games as the Yanks and Cubs in Spring Training and I think that my experience is consistent with the general consensus that hitting is definitely more challenging this year.I am really struggling on All-Star level. I did not have trouble at all in last year's model, but I am averaging like 1 run a game with a team BA of .177. I have won five games out of the twenty-odd that I have played. One, I was down 7-0 in the third and got miffed and simmed it to the end, and lo and behold the CPU had the Yanks win 13-7.One I won against the Nats 1-0 on a suicide squeeze in the 11th after Burnett had a no hitter thru 8 1/3. The CPU is clearly even more develish than last year with spotting pitches, and focus and patience at a much bigger premium. I have never been a slider adjuster, but have found that with this version it is a must to tweak the sliders a bit to generate some offense. As I write I am still perfecting that, but I can say that, unlike Madden in my opinion, this game can be adjusted to play beautifully and the graphics are really just stunning.

Graphics/Visuals

This game is a big improvement over Madden 09. There are many new enhanced graphics and visuals. The experience can be additionally enhanced with a HDTV. Overall, the whole game is a lot more lively and vivid than the last. Many visuals seen on the game are usually seen on Sundays.

The new player models are excellent and the uniforms look superb. On one cutscene, the texture of the uniforms can be seen. In the previous next-gen versions of Madden, many of the player models were kind of bulky looking. Now, the players are built more realistically. New uniform accessories have been added, such as towels, hand warmers, team colored gloves, and team colored cleats. They are not the same boring black and white cleats, which was on the previous versions. For the first time, uniforms can be interchanged, as well.

Seen on Sundays

During the game, many details and animations can be seen on the game, fan interactions, QBs talking on the phone, coaches ranting, players talking on the sidelines, kickers practicing kicks, players riding the exercise bike, referee interactions and chain gains. One of the coolest features is seeing fans leave early, if their team's game has gotten way out of hand. It is also quite funny.

Game Play

The game play is better. First off, the game speed can be adjusted. Many of you played the demo and didn't like the speed of the game. Well, it can go from very slow, slow, normal, fast and very fast. Also, EA has added a new threshold differential. This means setting to the higher the level will give the player less of a disparity between the fast and slow players. A lower setting will increase the disparity.

The player animations and movements are realistically fluid and not robotic, such as the previous versions.

I noticed on some movements, the players use more momentum. Players can't just break out and turn different corners, quickly, like they are on wheels. They actually bend and don't stay upright, while turning a corner. Sometimes, the player may have to make a cut, in order to head up field. The best animations are while going through the hole. Pressing the directinal buttons will make the RB make many different cuts. Time them right and the defender can be juked. Typically, juking could only be done by spinning.

The player animations have improved. Players fall many different ways. Sometimes, it even seems as if they are going to break out of a tackle, then they start to fall. There have been times when I was on the edge of my seat because I thought my player was breaking the last tackle in order to "take it to the house", but he goes down. Not to bad. The Pro-Tak is realistic. The players pile up, when necessary. It is not an every down occurrence. Keep in mind, different modes carry different Pro-Tak results.

The game is very competitive!!! Even this year's version of All-Pro is a lot harder than the previous versions. Players cannot expect to just dominate the game above the Pro level. Many glitches from the previous version have been neutralized, as well. Also, the computer does not make themselves sitting ducks for hit-stick tackles, such as previous versions of Madden. They do more weaving on this game, which is fine.

Flaws

There are a few things that disturb me about the game. The first issue is the new running motions of the players. It seems like they run with their heads down. They also look as if they are just struggling to try to run. In addition, every player runs in the same motion. The previous Madden had at least 3 or 4 different running motions.

The next issue is the new "fight for the fumble" feature and the chain gang. "Fight for the fumble" is a joke. It is like a mini game, which you have to press various buttons rapidly in order for possession to be gained. There was a play, which the player fumbled and two of my team members dove on the ball. Clearly, I had possession of the football. Unfortunately, I still had to fight for the football and lost possession of the recovery. Of course, this feature can be turned off. The chain gang will drive you crazy. Every single time you have a nine yard play, the chain gang comes out. I mean, lots of times, you know that you didn't get a first down. What is worse, this feature cannot be skipped.

Some of the cutscenes get repetative. During the game, you will constantly see the same cutscenes, which involve the same position players. For example, when you see the QB talking on the phone, you see the FS over his left shoulder, each time. Then, you will see the triplets sitting down (QB, RB and WR). Then, when a play goes awry, the coach will be ranting at a player who had nothing to do with the play going wrong. For example, if the QB throws a pick, the coach will rant at the OL. Why not the QB? If the QB throws a pick, he yells at the OL or the FB. That makes no sense. They should have had at least 20 cutscenes, which involves different position players.

Depending on what level you play on, you will experience some of the issues, which was on the other Madden games. You will still see makeshift tackling. This goes on during "Pro-Tak" animations. In modes other than Pro, you will NOT see double-hit tackling. In All-Madden, the AI of your teams just goes out of the window, such as OTs ignoring blocking assignments. In addition, many of the issues become more magnified. All-Madden is totally unplayable. I would suggest playing on Pro or Custom and tampering with the settings.

The commentary is just dull and scripted. It would be nice to have a Madden, which has some loud an exciting commentary. For example, if someone makes a spectacular catch, I want the commentator to have excitement in his voice, when the play happens. I compare this to how it feels when watching Sunday Night games on ESPN. Hearing exciting commentary, while watching a game makes it more exciting. The dull commentary takes away from that experience.

Though the half-time presentation is good, the highlights are shown out of order. When watching real football, half-time and post-game shows at least have the highlights shown in sequential. This could have made the half-time presentation more organized.

The Verdict

Everything on the game has been improved in many ways. In fact, it is a complete turnaround from the last version. If it were not for the flaws, which I mentioned, the game would be even more superior. Of course, no game is going to be perfect, no matter what. Many critics need to realize this. Therefore, if you loved M09 (2008 was horrific), you will absolutely love this latest installment of Madden. Keep in mind, this finished product is a lot better than the demo!!!

Let me start off by sating that this is the best madden I have ever played. Yet, for the price, I still feel like Ive been scammed for some reason. I'm fine with paying $60 for a quality game like MGS4, COD4 MW, COD Modern Warfare 2, Gran Turismo, etc.. I feel that this game was rushed, and that the preview blogs that they posted moths before the launched made me feel like that this is going to be one of those top tier games. They worked on the visual details so much that they didnt spend enough time on the actual gameplay.

Pros:

1. The claim that they made that whatever you see on Sundays is what you will see on the game is true. You will see every detail on the player (towels, handwarmers, type of sleeve, type of helmet down to the exact model and facemask, gloves). Referees are there and so are the chain gangs and coaches.

2.The mechanics have slightly improved. You can now adjust the game speed based on you preference. The routes WRs run have been improved (more realistic).

Cons: THERE ARE MANY

1.Franchise Mode lacks a lot. The Injury system has improved but only on the short term (during games). In the long term (season), injury sys. is still unrealistic. For example, If a player tears his ACL completely during the Pre-Season, he will be out for the season and available the following season. Taken into acct that ACLs take about 1 year to heal with surgery, this is accurate. But one of my guys tore an ACL, during the NFC Championship game and he was out for the season, but was available at the start of the following season. Considering that the NFC Champ. games is in late Jan. and the start of pre season is in Aug., thats only 6 1/2 months. There is no way a player can come back from a complete ACL tear in 6 months. Also, the players are too agressive in contract signings. I played as the Eagles one time and their heir apparent at QB, Kevin Kolb wanted $32M for a 4 year contract, and McNabb was still on the team. Kolb had done nothing for the team except for holding kicks, and he wants $32M. That's absurd! He wasnt even that good, He was ated in the 70s. Then the next year Ellis Hobbs was asking for another $40M+ contract, FOR BEING A NICKELBACK!! I think Madden should take into acct the roles that each player plays on the team and how they should negotiate in contracts. A player that I drafted 2nd overall(QB) wanted a 6 year $90M contract and he hasnt even proven anything, He is worse than his real life counter-parts. I can tell you for sure that Matt Ryan, Matt Stafford, Mark Sanchez, and Joe Flacco didnt get that kind of contract. They should use the contract system from NFL Head COach 09 which implemented bonuses, because in this game the GM (you ) have no leverage against them. If you dont sign them they go to Free Agency and you will be mad at wasting that 2nd overall pick.

2. More from FRANCHISE MODE

The Madden people claim that there will be a different feeling in playing regular season games than playoff games. Personally, I dont see a difference. The cut scene after winning the SB is always the same and looks so fake. On the makeshift stage that the winners stand on, its always the QB who holds the MVP trophy no matter who wins it. A WR or TE can be MVP and you will still see the QB holding the trophy in the end. Also, the cutscenes get annoying and most of it is cheesy. What annoys me out of all of them is the chain gang measuring the spot scene. If you pick up 9 yards on 1st and 10 and can clearly see that the ball didnt make it across, the cuscene would still play. Whats annoying is that if you gain 9yds, the ball is 1yd behind the 1st down marker, in the cutscene they make it look like the ball is 2in from the 1st down marker.Madden only has 3 or 4 spots that the ball is in during that cut scene (2in short, 1 foot short, ball halfway past stick, and ball completly past the stick) Even if youre downed 1yd past the 1st down, when the cutscene plays, the ball will be at most 1/2 past the stick, but when it comes back to the regular view, the ball gets spotted 1yd past the stick.

3.Players on the sideline.

Everytime the game cuts to a scene showing the entire sideline, the are two groups of players who do the same thing, they are even snchronized.

4. Limited playbook

The playbook is so limited. There are no trick plays to run, and the sub packages feature has been removed. Now you have to indv sub your players to change packages. To touch on the playbook, it is so limited. I wish that they would update the playbooks like they do with the roster. Heck, the eagles dont even have a wildcat set for Mike Vick.

5.Wildcat

Its good that they put in the wildcat formation in the game. But its basically useless. First off, you cant audible out of it and you cant hot route out of it. If you play in anything higher than PRO difficulty, you will find this formation useless. Also on WC passing plays, the passer cant scramble, and since you cant audible out of it, the defense coincidentally calls a blitz and you are basically guaranteed a sack.

6. AI

There are serious problems with the CPU AI in this game. If you play in PRO diff. and up, you will find the CPU team basically calling plays that perfectly counters what you called. If you call an Iso run up the middle out of the I, defense will blitz all or at least 2 LBs, and they will pack the box with 8 men. If you audible out of that and call a deep pass play, they will drop everyone back. This ticks me off the most because I feel like I'm playing against someone, and telling them what play I'm gonna run b4 I snap the ball. This is what makes wildcat useless. If you call an option play out of the wildcat. The defense will blitz both ouside LBs, so it doesent matter if you hand it off or do a QB keeper the defense will still get you for a loss. You cant do anything about it cause you cant audible. Also, if you call a wildcat run play, the defense will stuff 10 guys in the box and your outsde recievers will not be covered by anybody, but since you can audible, thats another negative play. "Coincidentaly", If you call a wildcat passing play, all the DBs will cover and jam your WRs and blitz the LBs, and since you cant scramble, the passer is a sitting duck, and this is almost a guaranteed sack.

7.Difficulty.

The difficulty settings on Madden has little or nothing to do with your player's or CPU's players' skills. Its all about making mistakes and the CPUs ability to "spy in your huddle"(know what play youre gonna run). On the PRO level, its still impossible to stop the passing attack of the CPU. No matter what play u call in D-fense, the CPU QB will complete every pass. The difference btw EASY and HArder difficulties is when you set it to an easier mode, the CPU's QB will throw an INT or fumble in the redzone. So the QB will end up completing 20 out of 24 passes and out of his 4 incompletions 3 will be INTs.

8.Blocking

THe blocking is terrible. Linemen always misses blitzin players and its even worse on running plays. They always seem to let their man go right when the RB is hitting the hole. So even if you line up in a Spread 4WR formation and run a dive play, it will seem like you will gain at least 20 yds cause the defense is spread out, there is nothing but green in front of you. But no, right when you hit the hole a 300lb DT will somehow shed his block or the Lineman will let him go, and tackle a RB going full speed wich nets you a 3 yd gain. I DONT KNOW HOW SOMEONE COULD TURN THEIR BODY AROUND 90 DEGREES AND WRAP UP A RUNNINGBACK CHARGING AT FULL SPEED!!! The problem is that the running backs hit the hole soft which is completely different from how real life RBs do it.

9.Inefectivity of the Blitz

Blitzing is done to knock the QB out of his rythmn and hopefully get a sack. In Madden, it is impossible to get a sack. The QB will somehow find a reciever (even if its is on his blindside) and get rid of the ball at the last moment. Even if you knock him on his ass every play, he would still get the ball out and his rythmn would still be intact. His Linemen also have superpowers in the sense that if you blitz a linebacker in between the RG and RT and bouth of them are blocking the DT And DE, then the LG or LT (someone who is 350lbs!!) will slide all the way in between the RG and RT to pick up the blitz.

10.Special Teams

Special teams is a non-factor in this game. Its impossible to block a field goal, impossible to block a punt(except from the 1yd line), and the blocking on Punt Return is terrible. I dont even do FG blocks anymore, its a waste of time

Buy Madden NFL 10 Now

I haven't bought a Madden game since 2005 when they first introduced QB vision. I thought vision was actually pretty cool back then. I decided to take the plunge and buy the Madden 10 game for the PS3, and honestly, I was very disappointed. Overall the game looks really good on my nice HDtv, but EA is really trying to nickel and dime the consumer with all this Downloadable content that was already included in the series before DLC was available. I'm going to go through every aspect of the game and I think many of you will know what I am talking about.

Superstar mode

My biggest gripe about this madden game is that they completely ruined superstar mode where you create a player and play him as a rookie. You can't workout or anything to improve your players ratings. You have one practice a week and then you play the game, but no matter how well you play, your ratings don't improve or progress. I had the sim the rest of the year to find out that ratings will only go up at the end of the year. But don't fret, if you're impatient, you can pay for DLC that will give your player the max progression for that year or make him a leader of the team. That is ridiculous, these use to be in the Madden game in 2005, now they want you to pay an extra 2 dollars to get it. They also got rid of email or cell phone messages and the ability to select an agent. I thought it was cool when I got an email from my mom congratulating me on winning the offensive player of the week award. There is also nothing to do during the offseason. You can't star in a movie or anything fun anymore.

Franchise mode

EA also did a wonderful job of stripping this down as well. It just seems like you have less options. You don't have a budget to control, you can't increase or decrease ticket prices, you can't do any improvements on your stadium. I liked being able to customize my team after a few years in Madden 05, now I can't do any of this. You sim through, play the game, then you practice, then you play another game and the cycle continues. You can't really do anything else. It's quite boring.

Online game-play

This is the only worthwhile thing I enjoy about Madden 10. You can play others online. There are four modes you can play. There is a ranked single player game, an unranked scrimmage, and an co-op mode, and an online franchise mode. Most of these modes are great, except when they aren't working. I play using my comcast internet connection and get disconnected often which is ridiculous. When this happens, you get an automatic loss and a blemish on your record even when you're winning the game. I know it's not my internet connection, so it's something on EA's part. Their servers has always been known to be very craptacular. I decided that I would get all my trophies for madden, but i can't because the last trophies I neen require that I play the online co-op mode, but it is uber buggy. This mode is meant for you to play against the computer with another live person on your team. The problem is, everytime you start the game, you get the message "the connection with your peer has been lost". This problem has been made known to EA for some time and they have yet to release a patch to address this. I have not tried the online franchise mode, but have heard that it is buggy as well. Each copy of madden comes with one redemption code you need to use to activate the online franchise mode on ONE profile. The only problem is that I'm not the only person that plays madden on my PS3. If someone else wanted to use the online franchise feature on their PSN ID, they have to shell out another 10 bucks. Now if I sell my Madden 10 game, it's basically worth 10 dollars less because the redemption code is non transferrable. This is just another way that EA is trying to nickel and dime you. EA does provide a roster update almost weekly that adjusts for how a player is doing in real life or any trades that might happen which is cool.

Other Small things I noticed

-Commentary is repetitive and very awkward sounding. The same things are said at the end of the game replacing the team names.

-Freezing occurs sometimes for no reason

-You can't throw a deep pass over 30 yards even when your receiver is already past the secondary as the receiver will slow down and the safety and cornerback speed up to get to the spot of the ball and swat it down. This shouldn't happen when the receiver is Steve Smith of the Panthers.

-Wildcat formations are almost unstoppable.

-The new fight for the fumble feature sucks. Two of my guys would land on the ball, but I would lost the fumble recovery because I lose at mashing buttons in the mini game.

-Playstation Network and EA works on their servers quite a bit which make online play unavailable for a few hours which is annoying as this is the best feature in madden.

-That's all I can think of right now.

Conclusion

I bought this game hoping it would be a big improvement from 2005. I was incredibly disappointed. If you really want to spend 55 dollars for a stripped down version of Madden 10 for the roster update, go right ahead. You can spend an extra 20 bucks on DLC to give you features that were in previous versions, but it's not worth it. But if you're a person who really cares about quality, then you'll be just as disappointed as I am. I refuse to buy another Madden game until there is more substance to this series. This won't happen until competition returns to the NFL games. Ever since the NFL gave EA the exclusive license to make their games, there hasn't been any competition and therefore much innovation. EA can just keep releasing the same game year after year and nobody will really care because they have no other NFL games to compete with, but I am going to make a stand to boycott EA games until they release a game of some real substance. This probably won't happen until 2014 since EA's exclusivity contract with the NFL runs up until that time.

This is by far the WORST Madden I've ever played. The controls are absolutely unresponsive and clunky. When attempting to move players, they often do not respond to the buttons pressed. When on defense, pressing dive to tackle your player will do one of three things: he won't do anything, he will literally fall straight down, or if you're lucky 1 out of 10 times he'll actually dive. And don't even try to intercept the ball on your own. If you can actually get your player to respond to your button mashing, the ball will just bounce off your helmet anyways. Also, you know how the computer takes over your player if you don't press anything? In this version of Madden, you're CONSTANTLY fighting the cpu from taking over your character. Especially on defense. If you want to run one direction, you better make sure it's the exact same direction as your route because the cpu automatically starts making your character run in that predetermined route after the snap NO MATTER WHAT. And in the time it takes your player to slow down, stop, and start running in the direction you want, you're already getting burned.

The "realistic" slowed down play sucks. It's not realistic. It's sluggish. The graphics are great, but EXTREMELY glitchy. Props disappear and reappear during cut scenes. A guy will be talking on the phone and all of a sudden it will just disappear from their hand. WTF? And why does every character look like the corners of their mouths have been sewed shut when they talk?

I could go on and on, but I won't. I hated this game. I've loved the Madden franchise for a long time, but this is a waste of money and time. Maybe you won't agree with me. Maybe you'll love it. I'd suggest renting it though before you play it so you can judge for yourself.

Do something, do anything. For three years, the Madden franchise has been painfully stagnant. Probably four, but Madden '06 was the first Madden game I had played since 2002. That's not to say I didn't try the other Maddens. They were tremendously inferior products to the 2K Games that Sega was pumping out and it only took a few games to see why. The presentation made you feel like you were watching the game on TV, great, for it's time, commentary, creative cut scenes and animations, gang tackles in 2003, and graphics so real, you'd mistake what was on your TV for a true broadcast. Madden, to this day, has lagged behind, only adding gang tackles recently, trying a failed "rewind" feature that infuriated even it's most loyal supporters, and only this year have they added in game cut scenes to add to the realism.

To this day, NFL 2K5 remains the benchmark for sports games. Madden 10 deserves a spot on the team, but still likely play on the scout team.

First, what are the positives with this game?

-Greatly improved graphics. Madden '09 seemed like simply a retexture of '08 which inturn seemed like a retexture of '07. Madden '09 added almost nothing new with the exception of the previously discussed rewind feature. Yuck.

-In-game cutscenes. Finally! It only took them six, maybe seven years to realize how this adds to the gameplay. NFL 2K5 found the perfect balance of what to add and what to avoid. Madden 10 has great timing with cutscenes, but they also get repetitive fast and there are some issues where you see the back of the crowd animation instead of the players. Still, nice addition, but why did it take them so long?

-Two man commentary. Another overdue "feature". Who thought one man commentary was a good idea?

-Slowed down game play. I see a recurring trend. The addition of "features" that were in the competitor's game years and years later. Also, another thing NFL 2K5 did well. This kills the high, high, high scoring games.

-Better blocking. The ability of your linemen actually matter in this game. It's about time.

-Taking time of the clock as you skip ahead. A real nice feature for exhibition games. This is one of the few features I haven't seen in a football game before.

-Updated rosters. Hell, I was playing with '08 until now.

But there are negatives. A few of them.

-The "new" features aren't really that new. Most of the features touted as new in this game were actually all in NFL 2K5, and most were in NFL 2K3. Unfortunately, the lack of competition allowed Madden to lower expectations and produce games that often are stripped of features that previous Madden had. Examples include the 7 man gang tackle and the in-game cutscenes. I wouldn't have had a problem with this had they been better than 2K5's, but they weren't.

-Lot of graphic flaws and errors. In two games, I had more players arms go through torsos and crowds block out cutscenes than playing any other game.

-Online franchise is here! Wait, you have to pay for it? Nevermind.

-Music. Generally, sports games have terrible soundtracks. MLB The Show '07 was an incredible game, but the soundtrack hurts the complete experience. I can't really fault Madden 10 for this, as the only sports game that I played that I actually enjoyed the soundtrack was MVP '04, which included "My Coco", "Walkie Talkie Man", and, um, "Hey Driver". Ok, so two out of three ain't bad. Still, "Bullgod" by Kid Rock? What? Seriously Madden?

So what's the final verdict? As many faults as Madden 10 has, it has its moments. The graphics are great, when they aren't obscured, and the game plays a lot better than last year's, even if the changes were due years ago. I would give this Madden a 7 out of 10, but for Amazon, I'll round up to 4 out of 5 stars. It's a good game, but the fact that I'd almost rather play a game that came out in the summer of 2004 to get my football fix, knocks it down a few pegs.

I'm using this with Rockband 2 and it's so close to being great. The guitar is small-ish, about the same size a the official Rockband guitar.

Here's a quick summary:

PRO's:

* No setup: Just plug in the USB receiver, turn on the guitar and they automatically link.

* The USB receiver in in the shape of the axe blade. How cool is that?

* The buttons (all of them!) are responsive and have a nice feel. They look good too.

* Overall build is solid. Very well made for the price. The guitar screams QUALITY! None of its parts, down to the USB receiver, look or feel cheap.

* I actually play better and have more fun.

CON's:

* The neck is too small for adult's hand, smaller than Rockand 2 guitar's neck. I don't have big hands and the guitar's neck still feels tiny.

========

I also own RB 1, RB2 and Nyko guitars. The Gene Simmons Axe is hands down THE COOLEST and is the one I'm most comfortable playing with right now. My wish is they would make a full size version for adult's hand. I would definitely pay extra to get it!

One important note: the strap comes off easily unless you really work it into the button's groove when you first put it on. Just make sure you use your fingernail or something flat to press the strap's "button hole" into the silver button's groove located on top of the axe blade.

The Good:

The guitar really looks cool.

Button response is superior to all other guitar controllers I've used.

The Bad:

The guitar feels thin and cheap, especially the neck.

The neck is too long and feels akward.

On other guitar controllers the buttons start on the first fret. On the axe the buttons start on the second fret. You may not think this is such a big deal until you actually start to play it. When I play the green button my hand automatically goes to the first fret which makes sense but there is no button on the first fret so now I'm off by one fret which causes me to miss a bunch of the following notes until I can realign my finger to the proper button.

The strap button closest to the neck will not hold the strap for very long. I've had the strap come off many times while playing which is very frustrating.

The Gene Simmons Axe is a cool idea but it seemed to be poorly designed.

I will keep mine and used it when playing the bass tracks on Guitar Hero and Rock band but it will not be my main 'axe' for guitar tracks and solos.

the guitar is well built. it has some weight to it so it doesnt feel flimsy. I think the buttons are the best i have tried(rockband and ace flying v as comparisons) the buttons are curved and the part of the button closest to the edge of the fingerboard are tapered so it takes very little effort to press. the strum lever is not noisey like some other clickers if have seen and more importantly heard.

Minusesi dont care for the position of the whammy bar and i prefer a toggle effects switch in place of the slide switch-and it isnt very useful in the place they put it

aside from that? This is a quality instrument that is priced a tad high but made up for in its quality.

for the person who said its a leftyit isntyou go by the strum hand so this is a righty guitar

I've had this guitar for 3 months exactly as of today...today it died for good. The wammy bar broke on it a week ago (imagine all the points I lost cause of that). And today it just stopped working. To be honest, it never worked that good with Guitar Hero Metallica to begin with. Seemed fine with Aerosmith though...maybe it was just already dying when I started playing GH:Metallica...who knows. It's a pile of junk. Guess I should have just stuck with the cheapo GH one.

Quality built guitar with great response time for the ps3. Did I mention the size. WoW! It looks like a full size guitar when my 8 year old holds it. For GH and Kiss fans , this is a must.

I haven't reviewed a game in a while, but Singularity really made me feel like I had to. Especially considering there are only two other reviews here as I write.

First, the most important thing. Singularity gets the basics absolutely right. Character movement is fluid, the controls are easy to learn, and there are no lurching mini-loads.

The environments and graphics are top-notch. From the moment you "arrive" on the island, you know it's going to look good, and it does throughout.

Gameplay is also great fun. I've heard a lot of comparisons to Bioshock, which I didn't play but watched my roommate play. I suppose there are similarities, but Singularity offers it's own take on survivor horror FPS.

The storyline is excellent. Playing with time often causes a muddled story, but here we have a great altered past/present that must be fixed, and the history of the island's downfall is well detailed in notes and recordings you find. Get all of them. Also, the climax is a big moment for your character.

Your time-altering abilities are great fun to use. Power them up as soon as you can, especially the one that creates a sphere of frozen time. This is extremely useful in taking out multiple enemies. It's fun to age a soldier to dust, turn "tics" against each other, and age/renew countless items. See a crushed, rusted crate? Renew it and inside could be E-99 (your upgrade juice), med packs and ammo. Sometimes this is imperative to continue, sometimes you just find more juice under a big branch you just "de-aged."

Happily, Singularity lacks any glaring flaws. If you find something you don't like, it's often down to personal preference. Health, for example, is (yes!) a good old-fashioned bar. You have to use health packs to regenerate. The encroaching red haze, once a good thing but abused to the point of annoying overkill in some games (the latest COD) stays away until you're nearly dead.

It's not quite as OMG-THIS-IS-AWESOME as the first time through Dead Space, an astoundingly good game, but has it's share of pleasant surprises. For example, I shot a soldier in the leg with my shotgun, which blew it off below the knee. He hopped a few times, clutching his thigh and yelling, then fell and squirmed in agony until I finished him off. That's a nice touch in enemy construction.

I apologize if this sounds too positive. There's always a risk of coming off as fake or easily impressed. But sitting here I can't really think of anything they did "wrong." It's a fully developed, greatly conceived and polished horror FPS.

My review of Singularity

Buy Singularity Now

I haven't really written a review for a game in a long while, but I felt Singularity deserved one. Not many people have played this game, period, let alone on the PS3. It deserves so much more than that, so here is my two-cents.

First off, the story: This game is set in 2010, when American special-ops go in to investigate radiation spikes on a seemingly uninhabited island near Russia's coastland. After an EMPlike blast forces our hero, Captain Nate Reinko, onto the ground of Katorga-12, the mysterious island locale of the game, things go the way of epic Sci-Fi. The island is the site of a previously unknown element called E-99, and the Soviet Union devoted huge resources to research of E-99 in the 1940's and 1950's so that they could establish themselves as THEE world power. E-99 is exponentially more powerful than atomic energy AND has trippy time-altering effects. Needless to say, disaster befell them long ago and you're left to figure out what went wrong and how to fix a new problem in the timeline. Singularity's story dabbles heavily in time-travel and alternate-timelines via "Back to the Future" ish story twists. Most stories that attempt to tackle the time-traveling mechanic beast end up muddled and confusing as a result. Singularity does not suffer this fate. The story is actually quite fantastic for what it is, and make no mistake, it is very campy in parts. That's part of its charm. I found myself in awe of just how well implemented time travel and alternate timeline related plot twists are used in the story. I for one am very big on good story in games, and this one does not in any way disappoint. The characters are pretty interesting, the setting and locale are compelling, and the endings are very impactful.

The gameplay is solid throughout. All of the mechanics established in the FPS genre are here and implemented well and feel natural. The weapons are very fun to use and are interesting. Using a sniper rifle that can slow down time is awesome, and so is rolling a grenade on the ground into wherever you want. The other, more usual weapons like the assault rifle and shotgun are fun to use as well. The enemy AI is great, and so is their behavior. They act very lifelike, and I found that to be a nice touch. The mutant enemies are both scary and a blast to play with. The real treat is the Time-Manipulation Device, which allows you to do incredible stuff like freeze a giant bubble of time. That way, you can leisurely walk up to your enemies, casually pop off a round, rinse-and-repeat with the others, and when the bubble dissipates, they all fall down. This game really makes you feel like a bad@$$, and that is in large part due to the ridiculously awesome gameplay devices you're generously given.

Lastly, the graphics and sound are very well done. The music is moody, while not being overbearing. Each setting achieves its goal of atmosphere, from the clean, distinctly Soviet-communist factory/lab environments of the past to the dilapidated, depressing current state of the island. Some of the native, mutated life of the island really reminded me of the Metroid Prime games, and so did the music. A nice comparison, if you ask me. One thing I really liked about the game was that the atmosphere always reached its goal of making me feel tense and cautious about what may or may not be around the corner. This suspense and dread is rarely executed well in games, and I have to give credit to Raven Software for doing just that.

One thing I must point out that bugged me a little bit was the Russian language implementation. I LOVED the signs that were in full Russian. I didn't like substituting Russian letters into the English text simply because the letters are similar looking. Backwards N's and R's are abundant and it struck me as simultaneously unique and cheesy all at once. I have to point out that I speak a little Russian and that's probably why some of it gets to me a little. I mean, we're going to an island where everybody is a NATIVE Russian speaker, and yet they record their audio diaries in English with a heavy Russian accent? Gimme' a break. Most wouldn't find fault with that, as they don't know Russian at all, but I found it a little jarring. That's about my only jab I can think of for the artistic direction of the game.

Singularity cannot be discussed without mentioning Bioshock. Similarities to Bioshock are EVERYWHERE in Singularity, from the audio tapes that flesh out the backstory of major and minor characters alike, to the art-design of, well, everything in the game, to the plasmidlike abilities you get, to the upgrades you make to your character and his tools/weapons, even the main supporting characters and the roles they play to you and the overall plot is eerily similar to Bioshock (including a "would you kindly?" moment, making for one of the most impactful "good guy" conclusions I've ever come across in a game). They are ALL taken from Bioshock's textbook. Singularity pulls almost all of them off flawlessly, and this ends up being a big plus from me, as I really loved Bioshock. HOWEVER, I must say that Singularity's story seems much more focused on being a fun, "cool" sci-fi blockbuster adventure than the deeply philosophical, incredibly tragic tales that Bioshock and Bioshock 2 were. I don't say this as a negative, but it is worth noting that there is a big difference in tone and focus. Singularity's "tragedies" never touched my heart or got me thinking as deeply and so profoundly the way Rapture's sad tale did, not even close, DESPITE Katorga-12 being presented as a place befallen by tragedy and philosophy gone awry. Atlas Shrugged, this is not.

Since it was developed by Raven Studio, the developers behind the masterpieces X-men Legends, X-men Legends II: Rise of the Apocalypse, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, and Star Wars Jedi Knight III: Jedi Academy, I already knew the game would be another worthy installment, and now they have another game to add to an already impressive list of great games. It's so cheap now that I would say definitely BUY it NEW! We should be encouraging the publishers and developers to make these kinds of games. With its ridiculously fun and well implemented gameplay, its incredible, immersive atmosphere, to its very well-written and executed story, Singularity is a game worth playing. So for the sake of the motherland, buy it, teleport yourself into it, love it!

I'm convinced that Raven is going to continue to create and publish great games. I bought this and 2009s Wolfenstein (I've also reviewed this game) at the same time as a chance to see their more modern works. Here are my thoughts...

I'll start by agreeing with a previous comment on the control schematics. It is a bit odd using R1 to fire rather than R2 without the ability to change the layout, but fortunately I had been playing the Killzone series and had just been using the same configuration. That's really it for a "negative" although that's a rather harsh way to look at it.

The story was outstanding. Yes, it is only original to an extent as the whole time warp/change history has been done in games and movies a million times over. At first I was constantly reminded of "The Butterfly Effect" but quickly got absorbed into the story enough to look at it as its own title. I love war games, but I also appreciate breaking away from the same story line (CoD) and making a new twist on reality and different timelines. It's also nice to have another Russian installment for a lesser utilized environment/people.

Graphically this game is up there with the best of its time. It makes excellent use of the Unreal Engine 3. Characters, weapons, and environments are well textured, with details and shadowing accurate to lighting, firing, etc.

The game does borrow heavily from BioShock in some areas from weapons stations allowing you to upgrade weapons, little video clips upon unlocking new abilities with your singularity device, and the use of e99 and weapons tech cases as a form of currency. However, as a fan of BioShock, I found this familiar and welcomed.

Although it is a linear game there are a few points where it takes ingenuity to get to areas that appear to be locked and off-limits. I'm thinking of an area on a large ship where you can see a weapons tech behind a sealed door in particular, but there are a few others as well.

Overall, I played this game through all 3 endings and still haven't really had enough. I'd love to have a Singularity 2, but I'm not holding my breath. Much as Wolfenstein (2009) was an excellent game with subpar sales, Singularity experienced the same unfortunate fate. To add to the doubt of a second, the fact that there are 3 endings would make it difficult to build a second game. Too bad...

While I haven't played a lot of games by Raven Software, they are fast becoming one of my favorite game developers. Way back in the day when everyone was crazy for Doom, I played the shareware levels of Raven and id's Heretic. I pretty much just thought it was okay. While I enjoy fantasy, the setting of Heretic didn't really work for me in the same way that Doom's sci-fi locales and Wolfenstein 3-D's WWII-era trappings did. Aside from that and a little bit of the demo for Hexen II, I didn't play another Raven game until 2009's Wolfenstein. Long story short, I loved it.

I'd wanted to check out Singularity after seeing positive reviews on Gamespot and IGN, and that interest was compounded when I started seeing it show up on game critics' year-end lists. (For instance, Games Radar named it one of the best overlooked games of 2010.) I decided to wait until the price had dropped a bit, and once it did, I snatched it up.

So now that I've played it, what do I think? I'll start with the negatives. First, I wish it were possible to use alternate button mapping. I'm really used to using R2 rather than R1 to fire. When I played Killzone 2, I was at least given the option for a different control scheme, but Singularity doesn't allow this at all. This unfortunately led to me accidentally trying to knife an enemy from across the room during the first few levels. I eventually got used to it, but I don't understand why they didn't even offer me a choice.

Second, the best boss battle comes at nearly the two-thirds mark, and there really isn't one at the climax of the game. Truth be told, the ending feels a little anti-climactic. That said, I liked the fact that they tried to make the final level feel driven by story more so than action.

Last, but not least, the game feels too short. If I had to estimate, I'd say I finished it in about eight hours. Quite honestly, though, this and the previous complaints are more nitpicks, really. This is a solid ride throughout with a compelling story, some nifty enemies and even niftier weapons.

I may have made a minor gripe about Singularity's button assignment, but that aside, I loved its control layout. Like Wolfenstein (2009), it uses a shoulder button to aim. I've never really cared for using R3 to aim because I like being able to get back to regular viewing mode by releasing a button I'd been holding. While you're usually given the option to hold in R3 rather than clicking to toggle, I find that I have difficulty continuing to hold it in while moving the right analog stick to adjust my aim. Using the shoulder button to aim just feels so much more intuitive, and I feel like my accuracy is much higher.

I know a lot has been made of the fact that the game borrows pretty heavily--some might say "steals"--from BioShock. My initial reaction to that was, "Okay, sign me up! I love BioShock!" Admittedly, I was a bit taken aback by just how much it does take from that modern classic, right down to the kitschy period-appropriate film strips. Once I got past that, though, I was really able to get into the story and enjoy its time-altering craziness.

It's probably too much to hope for a sequel, since this one didn't exactly become a blockbuster, but each of the game's multiple endings leaves things open for further stories in this universe. That said, each ending would make for a drastically different story, so unless they just decide to pick one and make it the "official" ending, I think it'd be pretty difficult to make a direct follow-up to this story. (Of course, given the fact that only one ending features a full motion video sequence while the others are mostly still images and narration, I wouldn't be surprised if it's considered the official, developer-approved ending.)

So if you like first-person shooters with sci-fi and horror elements, I would definitely recommend this. It may not be the most original thing you'll play, but it's quite a blast for its duration.

Note: I haven't tried the multiplayer, and I don't really intend to.

Great game...Great price. Contrary to the other reviewer the code worked fine. The game comes with the promo code and how to redeem it. Unless there was an issue with his/her code that I am unaware of, If you follow the directions it will work fine . I really need to practice and play more, so I stop getting beat by all the 9-13 year olds, and everyone else who has been playing for so long...LOL But, the game is a blast!!!

This is a very good game and I still play it because I don't like mw3 that much but I really liked this game because of the good graphics other than what Infinity Ward creates and that it had Zombie Maps that were awesome and you could play with your friends and that came back from World at War and was the best! This is one of my favorite Call of Duty games and I recommend that you get it because you are gonna have some fun times with everything included on it!

Campaign 9/10

Zombies 10/10

This game is awesome. Campaign is mediocre but zombies and online multiplayer rock. It is much better than Black Ops 2.

Paid $15 during the XMas sales and it's been worth every penny. Still tons of people online playing COD Black Ops at time of purchase almost two years after initial release. I'll do the same thing for Black Ops 2 in like 2014.

I am writing this review for my 11 year old son. He loved the first skylanders game and collected all the guys. He saved his money and bought the new game and reached the end in less than 24 hours. He felt cheated. He said you don't even need all the new giants and figures to play the game. The one it come with is all you really need. He was disappointed because there are only 16 levels and they are to easy to beat. He thought this game should have been about half the price he paid for it, because you only got about half a game.

Okay, needless to say, the game is great! It'll keep you and the kids entertained for hours.

However, if you plan on collecting all the characters like I did for The first Skylanders game; you'll be disapointed if you buy the Portal Owners pack. First off you only get the disk and one Giant (Tree-Rex) character (boo, hiss, boo!) If you spend an extra $15 bucks and get the starter pack you get the disk, and one Giant (Tree-Rex) and two regular sized characters (Jet Vac & Cynder) *$11.99 each sold separately plus an extra portal of power.

Lets see (for you collectors) the extra two characters you get with the Starter pack run about $12 bucks each separately. Pay an extra $15 bucks on the starter pack, save yourself approximately $9 and the hassle of collecting these two separately. Plus you'll have an extra portal of power in case yours craps out on you. The Starter Pack is the better deal!

Once again, the previous owners of a great game, get screwed over again. More money for less stuff??? Because that's how it works in the long run.

I have heard that some of these converters don't work very well, but this one, called the "PIII Charger" works very well with Sony official ps2 controllers. It did not work with my generic Mad Cats controller at all, but worked completely fine for the genuine Sony controller. You won't get the Sixaxxis feature, but it will work for games like Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. I just couldn't bring myself to spending 45-50 dollars for a controller, yet alone buying two! I highly recommend this adapter.

Great product, works fine on my PS3 except that I couldn't upgrade in Resident Evil 5 using this on the PS2 controllers.

I was desperate to play RE5 co-op with a friend but was not willing to spend $54 on a PS3 controller, so I looked online and found this. I can proudly say that I saved $45. Buy it to use with your PS2 controller and save yourself lots of money instead of buying a brand new PS3 controller for $54 plus tax.

I heard this usb converters don't work with guitar hero controllers, so guitar hero players beware.

This worked fine for official Sony ps2 controllers to get them to work on ps3. I tried it with my ps2 wired guitar controller (the original red one) the ps3 recognized a controller as plugged in, but not a guitar, and hence it didn't work. Was trying this on Guitar Hero World Tour, and Rock Band 2 for PS3. Oh well. If anyone has found something that makes the original ps2 guitar work on ps3 please let me know those old ps2 guitars are simply the best.

I've been enjoying this franchise on PS2 for many seasons, so I've been looking forward to the PS3 version all year.

This game is really a ground-up redesign. Some major changes:

*Only one camera is available for actually playing, although several are available for intant replays. The game camera is similar to the default angle for the previous games in the series, but with slightly better down-field vision. Personally, I always played the overhead camera before, so I was a bit distraught on losing it. The downfield vision on this camera is just good enough that I'm not totally angry.

*The controller has been reconfigured, but it's completely customizable if you want to change it.

*The play clock is 25 seconds, and it starts REALLY soon. There is just no time for any preplay strategizing. In my opinion, this is a flaw. Perhaps when I find all the plays I want my pace will speed up enough, but at this point, I never get to the line with more than 5 8 seconds left, so hot routes and motion are just a fantasy. In previous versions, I enjoyed playing around with motion to get a look at coverages, etc, but I've got no time now to send a guy in motion, much less bring him back to where he started before getting flagged.

*The recruiting engine is now awesome. Even in past seasons, recruiting was my favorite part of the dynasty process, but EA has really taken this to new heights. The database for finding recruits is more work than before, and you can't just click "Interested Recruits". You have to really comb the database for the guys you want, and they have a targeted list you add them to. But when the recruiting gets started, you actually simulate phone conversations with these players in real time. This is so revolutionary, I just couldn't believe it worked as well as it did. I actually got butterflies picking the pitches in these "conversations" and reading the mood of the recruit. Talk to much about the wrong thing, and they will get mad and slam the phone on you. Talk about pressure!

*(SEE COMMENT ON THE STATUS OF THIS ISSUE)One big weird bug with respect to rosters: I usually spend a few hours after purchase setting up my favorite team's roster with names, along with stars on the other teams in the conference. This worked fine. I even used a USB keyboard to enter the names. I saved the roster several times and once again at the end. When I began the dynasty, it ported in the roster, no problem. After playing in the dynasty for a while, I came back out to the main menu to play some mini games, and guess what? All the rosters were reset and my saved roster was nowhere to be found. I went back to the dynasty, and everything was still in order, thank goodness, but the main roster for the game is wiped. HUGE bug, but since I'm mostly in it for the dynasty, I'm not despondent.

The game has its bugs, which I guess we should expect for a clean sheet redesign, but the leaps EA has made in graphics, recruiting, and gameplay still merited the 4 stars, possibly even 5.

It's hard to ding this game because it's always my favorite game every year. But, I bought a PS3 for the 1080p capability, and I'm getting annoyed that all EA's games only have 720p graphics. They better have 1080p by the NCAA 09 release next year. That said the graphics are quite good but only an incremental improvement over Madden 07 for PS3.

I like the new menus for choosing plays. But, that ask Corso think needs to go. Retire it already. Who actually uses that? It must be in his contract or something.

As an avid player of the previous EA Sports NCAA Football titles to say I was greatly anticipating this release would be an understatement. The day of release I went and bought it on my lunch break, anxiously awaiting the time to go home and play.

Upon turning on the game I noticed major differences. Most importantly, there are now only 32 teams to use. This means there are NO All-Time teams, or even Dynasty teams from specific years past. There is also no Random-Select in the team selection screen. My friends and I utilized this every time we played so people would not use the same team over and over, it added variety to the game. Whether these All-Time and Dynasty teams will be able to be downloaded later as add-ons from the internet is beyond my knowledge.

The gameplay is good, graphics are amazing... but other small things with the game seem to be lacking. Play selection is now Madden-esque in style and annoying to say the least. They have gotten rid of the pennant collection, which for me was incentive to play, to unlock various teams. I never was a fan of the Dynasty Mode where you create a player and take a team throughout many seasons. I played merely single games against friends. So this lack of earning points and teams is a slight let-down.

On the plus side the stadiums are impressively designed and each home team has special little things you notice unique to that school. For example, at Penn State you here the "We Are... Penn State" cheer and the Nittany Lion does his one-armed pushups. Also, with the Weather Channel Live Feed you get the weather for that exact location at the exact time you are playing. Subtle things like this make the game worthwhile.

Overall if you are a former EA NCAA Football fan it is a definite must have, just for the sheer point of getting the newest technology and up-to-date teams. However, do NOT expect it to be a revolutionizing game. Many things could be worked on, and hopefully will be with downloadable updates.

Much of what I liked or disliked about this release has already been well covered in earlier reviews. I continue to be baffled as to why EA gives the PS3 version the inferior treatment with 720p and 30fps graphics. The last version I bought was NCAA 06 for the Xbox, and I went back to it about a week after playing this PS3 version.

The player model quality is stunning save for the observation that every lineman is hideously obese. My biggest complaint is the feel of the game. The players run around like Mech Warriors or Imperial Walkers. They just don't seem to be moving like humans. I wager the PS3 30fps rate has something to do with this. The sounds don't feel realistic either. Almost every contact sounds like a basketball hitting the floor. The dynamics of the crowd noise doesn't feel right either. They also took the college atmosphere out of the game by removing the cheerleaders and more notably the on-field officials. Having the official occasionally get in the way of a defender or messing up your runner was actually strangely enjoyable albeit frustrating and added to the realism of the game.

The play selection method just flat wore me out. I must be really slow on the take because I would end up getting at least a dozen delay of game penalties or pick the first available play on the screen to avoid getting a penalty as I was running out of time. I am also disappointed that they removed the pennant collection. I didn't use it much in 06 except for the "tough as nails" pennant after getting sacked for the 10th time despite having an offensive line with an average rating of 95+ at Heisman level. it was just nice to have options to level the playing field when I felt the AI was "cheating" too much. The game play sliders help some, but not quite as much as the pennants would.

On the plus side, I *loved* the new recruiting system. It probably mimics the actual experience better than any previous version and it is infinitely deeper. The game play is actually quite nice. The passing game is much improved and the running game is much more realistic and challenging so I was unlikely to have a 2,000 yard rusher every other season. The kicking method which was first introduced in 07 is also much more challenging and pretty much guarantees my kicker won't win the Groza award every season or kick a dozen 60 yard field goals every season.

I am hoping against hope that EA will stop treating the PS3 platform like the red headed step child. I also wish they would stop making the NCAA game more and more like Madden in look & feel, but that's not realistic either because I'm guessing they're trying to minimize their development costs by maximizing base code overlap. I wish EA would go back and dig up the NCAA 06 code, fix the passing game so your 99 rated tight end doesn't have a perfectly thrown ball bounce off of his chest 9/10 times or the ball bounce off of your wide open clutch receiver's helmet, tweak the defensive secondary AI to play at their rated level instead of 65 rated players jumping 5 feet in the air or dive 15 yards to bat down passes or make one handed interceptions while doing a back flip, tone down the defensive impact players tackling the AI player by the face mask a half dozen times a game, use the 08 recruiting system and keep every other feature intact. I think that would be a winner.

Want NCAA Football 08 Discount?

NCAA Football 08 is a great 1st time offering on the PS3 despite some ridiculous flaws. First off, i see a lot of complaints about turnovers and i have my share of them but it's not the game's fault for this and is the players fault. I have played about 50 games and every one of my interceptions was my fault throwing into coverage or throwing it up for grabs to avoid a sack. You need to be able to read defenses and like real football stay away from throwing to a impact players side. As far as fumbles it is actually more realistic this year as they have even added a tuck the ball away button to avoid fumbling. When you know your going down or going to be hit hard tuck the ball away. I don't like the default speed on the R2 but you can customize the controls anyway you like. I'll keep it simple from here on out and just list the pros and cons.

Pros:

Great Franchise mode with deep fun recruiting all season long now.

Tons more player animation and much more realistic tackling.

Improved AI, no more money plays. You need to mix up your play book.

Campus Legend much improved.

Unlimited create a player and new create a recruit.

Detailed stadiums.

Fun realistic game play.

Cons:

Depth charts agonizing to navigate.

Menu system added needless steps to navigate.

PS3 30 FPS.

Presentation needs improving.

Missing key last gen features like create a play book and formation subs.
