Normally this kind of game is a instant buy for me because I love Demolition Derby type games....Ever since Destruction Derby on the PS1 I have enjoyed them !
The graphics were so different I was hesitant to get this one....so I waited a few days and thought about it.....Decided to give it a try and I sure am glad I did !
They say that the gameplay makes the game, not the graphics and that is so true here....the gameplay....car handling....physics (for this type of game) are perfect....It had TONS of different tracks and styles of play, they are laid out in a comic book style....so as you progress you open a new comic book with challenges.
An example of one track is a Figure 8 that is laid out as 2 triangles instead of the rounded 8's....and inside of the figure 8 is a PIT...as you race you can push drivers into this pit in the corners...and they push you in there too !
I found myself actually enjoying the unique graphics too....initially I really wasn't sure....actually playing it looks much better than the little videos you see on websites for this game.
If you want a really FUN to play (challenging in the mid-later levels) game, this is for you !

when I bought this title I knew very little about itand was concerned it would be a stinker. I was Wrong!!
it's a whole lot like the Destruction Derby series for ps1/ps2 and is more
fun then I've had with either Blur OR Split Second!
you have an amazing amount of tracks (that aim for wicked crashes like figure eights, hairpin turns, derby arenas, and more!!)
Loads of vehicles (one hundred and five I believe) lots of things to tweak
my only real worry was the Graphics since they are primarily Black & White with reds and yellows here & there. the Noir Graphical style is excellent for
this game type, multiplayer online is extreamly fun (8 player online)
playing matches such as "king of the hill" where you must Push opponents into a Pit!!! others have you crashing away to earn boosts to be able to
go to Ramming Speed!! (this has Much Mayhem Potential)
overall the game is probably the best Budget release yet and I Highly
recommend this to ANYONE that Loved the Destruction Derby Series!!
also has Local 2 Player Split Screen!
I gave this game such a High review score because,
it's the Most Fun I've had in a driving game in a long time.
it's quite like the old Destruction Derby series from PsOne/PS2
(with far superior graphics) the car destructability is really good, and the game is a kind of fun that games I thought had forgotten, that Pure Fun of arcades in the 80's well, this game captured it well and I highly recommend it
to the casual and hardcore gamer alike!
Graphics: B&W Noir style 4 1/2 stars
Sound: very good (though I could do without the announcer) 4 stars
Controls: Excellent and spot on for this type of game 5 of 5 stars
Fun: easily 5 stars! replay value here is Very High! especally with Local Split Screen!!
Overall: an extreamly solid title that you can choose to use 3D or not (a nice option) and it's so much fun I think I'd recommend this to everyone, kids and adults alike! a solid 5 Star Budget Title! (PS3 Review)

Mayhem 3DThis is a great Demolition Derby style game. Easy to pick up and learn, very fun to play, and not long to complete. (The race in the parking garage did take me awhile to 3-star.) I love the comic book aesthetic they use, however the 3D effect was unnecessary and may have even detracted a bit from the presentation. The black and white was unique as I've never played a game presented in b/w. This also lent to the graphics being very underwhelming, particularly in the age of HD gaming. I feel as though this title could have been released 15 years ago on the PSOne. The vehicles are not name brand, not customizable, nor upgradable.
Split screen 2-player is very well done. A nice feature considering most games these days are not 2 player unless you go on-line. This game also features a multiplayer on-line derby/racing, which I have yet to access as the Play Station Network has been down since before I got this game.
Overall, I like the game and am pleased I bought it. Serious gamers might scoff at this title, but for those who just want a fun racing/smash game that's not overly complex, you will enjoy this.

Yes, this game Mayhem is the best version of Demolition Derby I've ever played, having played GTA: VC's arena event (way too short), Driver Parallel Lines event (way too short), Destruction Derby (mostly a racing game), and a number of others over the years. Why? Everyone in the grid (up to 11 vehicles of all choices) starts off most of the time facing each other backwards. As it should be for vehicular impacting in a real event. You can unlock new features, like how much damage from low, normal or high and arcade, normal or simulation of the damage. At low setting, a DD event can last 10 minutes or more once you're down to the last opponent. Tire traction, etc. Adjust the 3D from 0 to 10, includes 2 3D cyan/red glasses of good quality. Announcer on/off, music on/off, etc. Plenty of options.
There's what looks like 30 tracks to unlock. They're pretty good, with pits and intersections to wreck other cars with, like DPL's races.
The damage is well done too, but disappointing in that vehicle frames don't accordion, diminishing the sense of impact. Though they will explode on impact with enough boost.
Monster trucks, muscle cars, coupes, sedans, station wagons and more. Over 150 cars or so, though a lot of them are just visual paint jobs with the same stats it seems.
If you can get past the b/w graphics (which were meant for red/blue anaglyph 3D, which is decent at best here at setting 10, or choose 0 to go without 3D, then you may enjoy this game. Think of the black and white of the game Saboteur.
Plenty of modes, destruction and good controls where the E-Brake is crucial to winning.
And best of all, the game has you start out with all the vehicles' rear ends facing each other when the bell rings. Reverse is stressed as very important to surviving, as in real life DD's. The game is growing better with each play.
Graphics: 6/10. I really wish there was a color version too, not just B/W.
Controls: 8/10. Responsive most of the time.
Physics: 7/10. They can't touch Driver.
Variety: 7/10. Once tracks start to repeat here and there, it's not as fun. Decent events though.
Sound: 7/10. A neat main theme song, but little else for music offered. Car sounds are good. The crowd, and announcer make it feel authentic.
Replay Value: 7/10. If you can get past the B/W graphics, and love demolition derby, it's worth it.
Fun: 8/10. At times, it's great, other times, I wonder if it would've been great in color. The high contrast B/W visuals are messing with my eyes.
3D Effect: 6/10. When set to 10 out of 10, it looks 3D, but they really needed to separate the cameras a bit more for a stronger pop. Sometimes you wonder if it's even working when viewing the tripod camera replays and menus.
Menus: 7/10. It's set up with Ticket Events, much like Motorstorm. The career mode should emphasize points running more, with certain drivers ranking on top, but it's only per event it seems, diminishing the sense of rival competition.
Options: 9/10. Plenty of useful options. Just missing the option to adjust the contrast level. It looks good, but for better 3D, it needs more grays to hide the ghosting of cyan/red.
Overall: 7/10. Worth a buy for Demolition Derby fanatics. So if you go to see your local Derby every year at the fairgrounds, buy this budget game to relive it at home. This game rocks!! Simple controls simple graphics 3-D too!! (kind of) Mayhem goes to show you, you don't need fancy fluff to make an entertaining game.It also brings back memories of Destruction Derby but is not as good as DD. My for cheap you can't go wrong!!!!
