Update: Last week, I had a 0-0 game go to a shootout against a player named IAMCHINESE (or I_AM_CHINESE). Anyway, he used a glitch that allows you to score every time in the shootout. Why doesn't EA address these issues?

I started out with high hopes for this game. However, after playing it for 3 months, my lofty expectations have turned to that all-too-familiar feeling of disappointment with an EA sports NHL hockey game.

At the surface, things seem great. The graphics are attractive, and the gameplay feels responsive. I do like the skill stick; it's a great improvement to the game and it allows for more creative offense as well as defense. However, once you want more than a cursory experience of playing hockey, this game begins to unravel.

I should preface the rest of this review by stating I've owned probably a dozen or more NHL games (EA's NHL series and the 2K series as well) since my first game: NHL 94 for the SNES. Also, I should let it be known that I feel the actual gameplay is the most critical feature of the hockey gaming experience. If the play is unrealistic, or if it slow and unresponsive, no amount of special franchise modes or extra bells and whistles can compensate. And my review focuses on online play, not playing against the computer.

So, now to take off the gloves. This game is absolutely terrible when it comes to realistic gameplay. The main offender is, by far and away, the goaltending. NHL 09 cannot recognize the difference between good scoring chances and poor scoring chances. Goalies are simply out of this world. They don't have any problem with stopping 15-20 one-timers per game, or with gloving slapshots from 10 feet out in the slot. They'll make impossible save after impossible save and leave you in frustration. To make things more confusing, the goalies have more trouble with shots that would normally be considered "low percentage" chances. These include unscreened wrist shots from the point, or floating, floppy backhanders that seem to find their way into the net much more often than they should. So, if you're playing this game and you want to score: don't use techniques that would make sense in an actual NHL game. You need to cheese. Find one move that works (there aren't many) and use it over and over and over. It's the only way to consistently score. It's just not any fun at all.

I know that the intent is to keep scoring down, but how is it any more realistic for a goalie to make 20 impossible saves in a game compared to a 15-10 final score? Taking slapshots from the blue line is pointless. Wrist shots from the slot are pointless. One timers have a decent chance, but you'll need to shoot 10 good one timers before you can get one past the goalie without ringing it off the post or crossbar. Dekes are also another scoring possibility, but some games you'll have 5 breakaways and be unable to score on any of them. I almost feel that the game decides (before you start playing) how many goals you're allowed to score.

Other problems include the stick lift and poke check. For online play, these are the most over-powered, over-used moves for defensemen. Using the stick lift, you can steal a puck from a guy who is 2-3 feet in front of you. Once in a while, you'll get a penalty for high sticking, but not often enough to keep everyone from mashing away on the stick lift button. Spamming the poke check on defense is surprisingly effective because if the puck carrier comes anywhere near the defender, the puck pops off your stick. In reality, when a defender poke checks, he is left out of position if he misses. In this game, you can simply poke, poke, poke until you get the puck.

Another major flaw in the game is the ability to hit offensive players who don't have the puck. Good internet players know that you can shut down the other player's offensive chances by checking players before they receive the pass. Also, if you're trying to set up a power play, the other team can cross-check your forwards when they don't have the puck. It is almost never called. Additionally, if you get a breakway that has enough separation that makes using the stick lift impossible, the defender can dive from behind you and trip you or knock you off balance just long enough for you to lose the puck into the goalie. That is never called unless your guy actually falls over. If you're chasing after a loose puck and a player from the other team is going to barely beat you, just check him from behind right before he gets to the puck. He'll lose balance and you'll come away with the puck.

The game has actual glitches too. During gameplay, sometimes your players will be set up for the one timer, but when you pass it to them, they lock up and the pass hits them in the skate while they are unable to move. I've scored goals in the shootout that don't count for some reason (they hit the net and bounced out but didn't give me a point) and I've seen goals scored where the puck never crossed the line completely. Sometimes the game will crash during online play causing you to get a loss. When attempting to change lines, the player stamina bars that you see at first are incorrect! Only when you try to switch your lines does it update with the current stamina levels. That can cause you to leave a tired line on the ice because it incorrectly showed them as rested.

If you hit a player on the other team and get a delayed penalty, your player will be unable to gain possession of the puck immediately following the call, even if the puck is right underneath him. For whatever reason, a few seconds must elapse on the game clock before your guy can take control of the puck. The same thing happens when the opposition goalie passes the puck to your player: if the goalie pass comes right to your guy you can't just slap it into the empty net. Again, for whatever reason, your player can't take control of the puck. It will pass through your guy until a player on the other team comes near it. If no opposition players come near the goalie pass for a few seconds, then you can finally get the puck. By then though, the goalie is back into position.

The controls, although improved, have problems. The main irritation I have is that shooting on offense is the same as checking on defense. This causes your player to cross-check the other team when you are trying to stuff in a loose puck. I also feel that the players miss the net on relatively good scoring chances way too much. I'm not sure if this is because of how I aim my shots or what, but an NHL player can hit the net on a wrist shot from the slot fairly easily. That's not the case in this game, you'll miss the net *a lot*.

Another problem is player switching. When you try to switch players on defense, NHL 09 simply selects the player closest to the puck. This causes problems on defense when the guy you want to select is not necessarily the closest guy to the puck. If, for example, you are trying to catch up to the puck carrier but are a step behind, if you try to switch players and play as your defenseman who is in position, you won't be able to. You first have to make your current player skate away from the puck carrier so that your defenseman is closest. However, this takes a second and by the time you finally get control of your D-man it is often too late.

Finally, your computer teammates are another source of frustration. Sometimes your D-men will change up right when the other team is coming down on an odd-man rush. Other times, your AI-controlled teammates will stand and stare at a puck as it glides by them: they won't move, in fact, sometimes, they'll move away from it. Then of course, there are the times that your teammates embrace their inner retard and skate directly into you. This often happens as you're trying to enter the offensive zone and they end up making you go offsides. On offense, sometimes your teammates will not go anywhere near the goal but instead stand on the perimeter and wait. This gives you no passing options. I've noticed that at the end of the game, the computer will force you to put out your top line even if they're dog tired and even if the other lines are not tired and even if you select one of your other lines. The computer just ignores your command and puts out the top line. Finally, if you forget to change up your lines, the computer will leave your guys out until they can't move any more. You'll have three lines with 100% stamina but the line that's out won't change up.

This game isn't as fun as it was when I first picked it up. I suppose that's because most people playing online now know how to exploit the stick lift and poke check buttons and they maul your players far away from the play. New rating: Overall 2/5, Fun 2/5.

I ve been a huge fan of hockey video games ever since Blades of Steel on Nintendo. I have to say that NHL 09 tops them all. The graphics are amazing making it feel like you are watching a game on TV. The commentary is probably the best sports game play by play I have ever heard. The only down fall of this game is the difficulty to score a goal. Other than that its a must play for all sports lovers.

This game is hard, but you still have lots of fun playing it. The first couple of games I played against friends and we all noticed how hard it was to score. As I kept playing against the game, I learned that scoring is damn near impossible. So I just said forget my pride and turned the diff level to rookie with full accuracy on my shot. Before I knew it I learned how to toe up the puck and fire it top shelf. I would have given this game 4.5, but we can't do it. In all everything is good except for the sensitivity when shooting the puck. Lets Go Devs!!

I sold my copy of NHL09 and had to repurchase on Amazon because I missed it so much. The Best Sports Game PS3 has to offer! Hockey translates very well on the PS3 and this game takes it to levels not reached by any other. If you're a hockey fan of any kind, even if you like the AHL or any of the European leagues they have them! Incredible depth to the game!!!

I have been playing the EA Sports NHL games since the earlly 90's, the nhl games over that span have been hit and miss. This year however EA Sports has nailed this one. What seperates this game is the be a pro mode where you get to create your own character and take him from the minors to the pros. Also the ability to play on different lines with dofferent line mates is a lot of fun too. If you have ever played an nhl game in the past and have even a slight interest, this NHL 09 is the game to buy.

I have only played this game for a few hours.

Likes:

Graphics are well rendered and the backgrounds look very life like.

You get the pink mist when one shoots enemies.Weapons are rendered well as are vehicles.

Sound is good I had no problems hearing commands.Good soundtrack when one is riding in Hummers.

Gameplay is fun the controls differ from Dragon Rising.I liked how the game plays.Riding around during the first mission with evryone chatting and then a IED taking out a vehicle. Then having to secure a perimeter to do a CASEVAC brought back memories for me from my tour. The smack talking by AI teamates is amusing and also brought back memories.

Combat can get intense one bullet in the right spot and you are done.Cover is important as a bullet can bounce back off a wall and kill you.No hiding out and healing like other games. You have to bandage yourself or you will bleed out.

Enemies will try to surpress and flank you.One must adjust for bullet drop, unlike COD no 1000 meter handgun kills.

Squad command is very important to success in this game.I am still learning the commands at this time.I also like that the enemy will fall back if enough firepower is brought upon them.Once enemies are eliminated no more surprises.Unlike other games where the keep coming until you move up.

One can also get unlocks and can customize their loadout which is a improvement over Dragon rising.

Dislikes:So far my only gripe is the poor friendly AI.

They have a bad habit of running in front of you and getting shot. And I found I have to give commands multiple times til they comply.

Multiplayer:Internet in my area is poor so I cannot give a review of online play.

Unlike Dragon Rising Fireteam engagments are online only.I was a little bummed by that.I do believe to get the max from this game one should play co-op with friends.

Thoughts:So far this game is a great FPS/Sim.It gave me plenty of realism with movement to contact and intense combat. Most COD and SOCOM fans won't like this game IMHO.As one has to think and use teamwork to be successful as it is done in the real world. If one can get three dedicated friends to play co-op it should be quite the time.Your Squad's callsign is "Outlaw" which was my Platoons callsign in Iraq that brought a smile to my face and made me miss my friends.

I try not to be the Military guy who trashes games.I play for fun first and foremost and this game is fun.

I will update as I play so others can make informed purchases.

Update 6-9-11

I have not made it to the PLA missions yet.I find this game very challenging on Hardcore.

Enemy AI is good though they tend to run into the open at times.Engagement ranges from distance to CQB in towns.Clearing buildings is fun and you need to be quick or else.

Friendly AI still runs in the line of fire so one gets to use med packs quite a bit LOL.

So far I have found no lag in frame rates.Graphics are better on some things than others.

During a controlled detonation the explosion was rendered very life like with smoke rising like it should.

I now have team commands down which make the game more fun.

The learning curve is not bad at all, be patient and you'll be fine.there is a lot of cussing but that is how Grunts talk.Weapon sounds are a little lacking but should not deter one from buying this game.

I do hope the campaign is of decent length which seems to be lost in gaming today.

Note:No Vehicle missions yet, will update if that changes.Weapons jam which add to the realism.

If you ever wondered what the Brave men and women go through fighting insurgents this is the game for you.

This is a very good military sim for consoles not quite ARMA but a good way to get ones interest in the Genre.

Take the time thank Veterans.

Update 6-11-11

PLA missions are tough going.Stuck on a level where you have to hold off a Mechanized Infantry attack.

Vehicles are rendered very well.Someone at THQ did their homework as the PLA deployed by the book with Infantry advancing with APCs in support.

No vehicle missions yet will post if there are.I recommend playing on hardcore to really get the rush of playing this game.

Vehicle missions happen after the first PLA mission.Good detail of the interior controls are easy to use.

This review is coming from a person who dislikes Activision's Call of Duty franchise, but loves EA's Battlefield franchise. Also, I thought Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising was not very good, though in some circles it is thought of as superior to this, which is fine. If simply comparing Dragon Rising to Red River, Dragon Rising is the more hardcore of the two, I think.

The bad:

Sgt. Knox is more of a Drill Instructor (these are Marines) than a true leader. He threatens and curses nearly all the time. I understand that there are moments that a leader needs to be hard on his men, but this is ridiculous. While it lends itself as not necessarily improving the "realism" when you are in his presence, it is often times humorous and entertaining the first time through.

As well as Sgt. Knox is concerned, I know little or nothing of my squad mates. I'm not sure if they just threw this squad together at the last minute or what, but I found myself not really caring or feeling regret if one of them died. All those long vehicle rides and I don't get to learn anything from the people I am commanding? I thought it would have been a nice touch to find out certain things about them. I think I might have "worked" a little extra hard to keep them alive (using the command a little carefully). I know it's not really real, but knowing Barletto has a newborn baby or Soto had a rough first tour of duty may have been kind of cool. Though, seriously, this is very minor stuff. Instead I command 3 robot type characters void of emotion.

The lack of competitive multiplayer is disappointing, but if it was going to be as bad as Dragon Rising, they made the right call. I can't help but think that a really well executed multiplayer would really boost this game [franchise] to the near top of the ranks. It's not COD or BATTLEFIELD, but I do believe there is a niche for these types of games. Squads of live players using tactics against other live players with a more real feel (no full magazine to drop enemies or quickscoping or any of that nonsense that plagues today's most popular FPS Multiplayers). I wouldn't even mind if it was 4 vs. 4 on a decent map. ANYTHING. Thankfully, they have Co-op mode where you can team up with buddies and play the AI. Heck, if Ubisoft can make a good multiplayer mode from Assassin's Creed series (a game I previously thought would be impossible to implement), Codemasters should be able to do it for this.

The good:

I love the Tajikistan setting. I found Dragon Rising to be a little dull because of the Skira Island setting. The setting in the middle east "feels" newer and fresh and current. Not much more to say about this.

The command menu is MUCH better than Dragon Rising. It's not nearly as cumbersome and after a single mission, you start memorizing some of the commands by reflex and really becomes a natural part of your gameplay. Instead of taking time to put the "point" behind a wall then look up to make sure you issue a hold position command, it becomes nearly reflex [up, right]. The quick ability to select one person of your squad to issue commands to is very nice. Move as a team or select certain people to put in certain positions. It is pretty cool to issue a command to secure a building and your team just goes about its business and starts clearing rooms and hearing that communication, slightly "humanizing" your squad.

Everything else is very well done. The missions appear to be actual missions you would perform in the middle east (clearing towns, protecting convoys and EOD teams, setting up a defensive position against enemies in trucks that are coming that you got from intel from your chain of command). The graphics are very nicely done long range, as there are some breathtaking views on the horizon. I've read that the graphics up close are not that good. I would honestly argue they are on par with COD (to me, COD can appear flat, or without depth at times).

The biggest thing for me is the no nonsense story and presentation. While it's not perfect (see above), for me, it beats the Hollywood theatrics that Call of Duty enlists and Bad Company 2 tries to mimic in their campaigns. In this sense, this is incredibly real, though holding a medpack in front of you magically fixes everything is not.

For consoles, this might be the most realistic shooter you can get, aside from Dragon Rising. Reviewed from PS3 version. This is nothing like ARMA II or those ultra realistic games, so keep that in mind if you love that side of the fence. This game fills that niche between ARMA II/OPF CWC and Bad Company series. This is pretty much where I fall and what I want from a military FPS.

Thanks for reading.

Score: 8/10.

Having played Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising I was hesitant to even try this game. Imagine my surprise when I discovered the problems that were prevelant in Dragon Rising had been dealt with in Red River. For one, running in this game doesn't make you motion sick because it doesn't feel like you are on a pogo stick. Second, the gun shakes about how it would in real life, unlike DR which made you think your arm was a jackhammer. The gameplay is fun and realistic without being too frustrating, and the maps are wide open, allowing you to get creative with your sight lines and angle of approach. All in all, definately good for someone looking to try for a change of pace from the usual Battlefield and CoD.

The Metal Gear Solid HD collection is just what it says it it. A remastered version of Sons of Liberty, Snake Eater, and Peace Walker for the PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles. The description does not say it, but you are actually getting the Substance and Subsistence versions of Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater, respectively. This includes all the extras included on those special re-releases (My favorite being the fully controllable camera on Subsistence), minus the Snake VS Monkey mini game in Snake Eater. The remaster looks great in 1080P HD. Frame rate from what I can tell so far is a steady and constant 60 FPS. Altogether, I would say that this re-release, despite the exclusion of Metal Gear Solid (which is only $10 on the PSN for PS3 owners), is a must buy for anyone who wants to experience Peace Walker, Sons of Liberty, and Snake Eater again in remastered HD.

There have been a great deal of HD collections coming out lately. Most giving you trophy or achievement support along with the updated visuals. The Metal Gear Solid HD collection is not different. But the package seems worth it mainly because of just how much you're going to get from these games. By bringing you the Substance version of MGS2 and the Subsistence version of MGS3 you are getting much more than your money's worth here. Not to mention you are still getting Peace Walker.

There isn't much need to discuss the story of Metal Gear here. In the first place, we'd be here all day just trying to discuss what it all means. And in the second place, the majority of you getting your hands on this have probably already experienced these games once before. I will only say that the story of the saga is absorbing, confusing and a lot of fun. Gamers have been absorbed by the themes of these games for quite some time, but experiencing them again isn't always so bad. The cutscenes are usually good. Some of them are a little long, but they're very well done. Complete with great voice acting, humor, drama and action. The cinematic experience of Metal Gear Solid is a jack of all trades.

It is unique, however, to see how these games differ. Despite all being Metal Gear Solid titles they all look, feel and control very differently. With Metal Gear Solid 2 harboring the closest to the original game while Metal Gear Solid 3 gives you a ton of freedom to actually take several different approaches to each particular area. And while Peace Walker is much more straightforward than the third, it still allows for a lot of freedom gameplay wise. This means that each game is actually quite unique. And playing all three side by side by side in this manner helps to showcase that we weren't just getting the same old thing from one game to the next. They all retain their stealth elements but approach them in very different ways.

Trophy and achievement support has been added to the games. This is sure to delight some of the most hardcore Metal Gear fans. And it's nice to see that Hideo Kojima has a sense of humor about it in some regards. The visuals are also crisp in HD. Regardless of the HD or not, Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 actually still look rather good even compared to todays standards. The aesthetic design is still unique in both games. It doesn't feel new, but it's easy to be drawn in thanks to the details. Realized in HD everything looks smoother and is now presented to players in widescreen.

The only downside to the visual structure is Peace Walker. It doesn't look as good as some may have hoped. It is understandable, however. The game was designed for a smaller screen than whatever it is you're playing it on. On the PSP it looks nothing short of fantastic. But blowing up the picture in this way is going to cause for some blurry textures. It also lacks quite the amount of detail due to being on the PSP as well. Likewise, since the experience was designed for a portable system it plays as such. On the other hand, however, you can use your PSP save data to play if you wish.

The best part, however, is that with the exception of Metal Gear Online from Metal Gear Solid 3, you get all the extras from the two games. The VR Missions from Metal Gear Solid 2 are still there. As are the snake tales. Metal Gear Solid 3 also includes the original Metal Gear 1 and 2 (something the essential collection didn't have). The extras were more than we expected then and they're still nice to have here as well.

The lack of the first Metal Gear Solid is somewhat regrettable but it is hard to imagine that the transition to HD would've been kind to the original game. Given how Peace Walker was treated visually, the first game might not really be that good to look at in HD. The limitations of the Playstation graphically don't make for a great transition to High Definition. For those who can't be without the original Metal Gear Solid, however, you can easily head over to the PSN and download it from there. It won't be HD, but you'll still be able to experience the game and story again.

More than likely those who pick up this collection will have already experienced these games before. And they're picking it up to re-experience them in HD. If you haven't experienced Metal Gear Solid before the HD collection is one of the finest ways to experience it. Given the cinematic quality of the games themselves, HD alone actually can justify a purchase. They're good games worth re-exploring for fans. And worth diving into for those who are curious to experience them. It's three games in one (five, if you include Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2) and a very enjoyable collection.

I was 5-6 years old when Metal Gear Solid came out. Honestly, when I first played it, I couldn't comprehend the story. It all went over my head. But as I got older, I just fell in love with the series. Once I was old enough to understand the story, I just had to play every single game in the series. I even went so far as to play through the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 when they were released with subsistence. This marks the 4th time I purchase Metal Gear Solid 2, the 3rd time I purchase Metal Gear Solid 3, and the 2nd time I purchase Peace Walker. I would purchase them again if they were re-released. For fans of the series: do yourselves a favor. Don't hesitate! Purchase this set so you can play them in HD. Not too mention, that it is so awesome to be able to have almost the entire series available to play on the PS3, Portable Ops being the only notable exception. For those that are complaining about the lack of MGS 1 being included in this set, you can purchase it on the PSN. Once again, this set is spectacular in many ways and is totally worth buying even if it's a quadruple, triple, or double dip.

In case you're wondering, these are "Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance", "Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence" and "Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker".

All of them Trophy-compatible, full HD and everything you remember (except the Metal Gear Online of SubSistence). This is one of the few games that show you 1080 quality.

For the record (No C.o.D. M.W. 2 pun intended), this is the game that made me jump from the PSX simulator for PC to the actual PS2.

For Substance you get almost everything you could remember from the PS2 ver:

-Snake and Raiden playing with sunglasses every now and then

-Everything is the same in the interactive menus/cut-scenes

-The exact game play (excluding that sometimes the R2 and L2 are to be pressed a little harder for the tact-reload)

-Every VR mission (yes ALL OF 'EM and getting that trophy is deemed to be virtually impossible).

-Every special (boss survival, casting theater, etc)

-Snake Tales

-And last but not least, the Previous history, that, if you remember, includes the paper clipping, which upon reading unlocks a story published by a reporter, which in order unlocks the book by Dr. Nastasha Romanenko telling the story of Shadow Moses from her perspective.

Only one thing missing (that I know of, will edit if find something else), Skateboarding, there's no skateboarding in the HD Substance. Besides that, everything else you could remember from the PS2 Substance is here.

For Subsistence is almost the same:

-Again the exact game play (this one with the slight difference in the pressure sensitive "CIRCLE" that if you remember, is required precision to grab hold of an enemy and not slit his throat, hard core Subsistence/DualShock 2 users will take a while to empty that cup of knowledge to fill it with Dualshock 3 precision)

-Metal Gear Online is out, and I believe only a handful will miss it (not me for sure)

-Snake Vs Monkey (or whatever it's name was) is also gone, you can get the E Z gun with the alternate method, the hard way.

-The "Special Conditions" boss survival (Duel Mode I believe it was) is gone too (although you get the DPM camo from the get-go)

-The Nightmare sequence (the one you get when Para-Medic talks to Snake about a book after the torture sequence), is not here, or at least I don't know how to trigger it. The scene where Johnny talks of his family is here though, with stomach ache and everything.

-Secret Theater is also gone (bad thing because that joke on "The Joy" was priceless), maybe because they would have had to reanimate them again from scratch as they are not scenes for the game and thus not generated with the game engine.

-All the camos that were available for download (even DPM) are available from the Camouflage menu.

-Again all the interactions in menus/cutscenes are here, also the ones in the intro sequence (I even think there are more in the HD intro than in the PS2 ver); even all of them in the "Press Start" menu are there.

-And last but not-in the-least the Specials "Metal Gear" and "Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake" original vintage games that were included in PS2 Subsistence are here too. That is: You will be playing a NES game on a PS3! at 1080p.

In both of them you can still use what I call the "Metal Gear reset method", which is only holding START SELECT L1 L2 R1 R2 at the same time to get out the game to the game menu.

Two things that bothered me:

-You tap the Konami code and nothing happens. Even when it held no significance if you did input the code in the Konami logo it made the screen flutter a bit, like just thanking you for remembering, in Subsistence it did that and made a marking sound, but in the HD, nothing.

-----------EDIT-----------

The Konami code, still holds some power thought, If you enter the code in the pause menu, viewing the map, fighting the End (assuming you didn't kill him earlier), the code reveals his location and points it out on the map.

Thanks to Smolderin' Stu for the clarification

--------------------------

-American version button layout. Fans will remember that Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 were ones of the few that advanced on "CIRCLE" and backtracked on "X" in the menus, this appear to be "fixed" on the HDs. I particularly liked the exclusivity that this brought to this saga, it felt like it made you remember that this is a Japanese game.

For Peace Walker:

-I believe they did't take out anything (can't be sure since I didn't exactly completed all of those missions, just the main ops up to ZEKE, and a few of the extras after)

-Since it was made for PSP, you feel (or those of you who played it on PSP) that the menu is, like too big for the TV screen, big letters, big logos, but my brother got used to it after a while, as would most of us if we stopped playing it on PSP.

All three of them have the new "Transfarring" feature, that allow you to pause the game on PS3, save and continue on PSP or Vita (if you already have the PSP or vita version of the same game).

All in all still the best saga of video games I've ever played, and I consider this a must-have for all MGS fans

Want Metal Gear Solid HD Collection Discount?

Of all the collections and amazing game of the year contenders coming out this year this is the only game I have paid full price for (as opposed to waiting for it to drop price or buying it used). Even though I know these games are old, with the exception of Peace Walker, they hold a special place in my gamer heart. So I am biased for sure, but customer reviews are opinions and therefore biased, so there.

However, aside from my biased opinion, I should say that the compilation was fantastically produced. The sound effects, graphics, and (ridiculously drawn out!) voice-work is all intact, just as I remember it. Again, in my opinion, I feel that the graphics have stood the test of time due to their style. The quality of the graphics may be in HD, but other than that they are not upgraded. But I think it's funny that I remember thinking the graphics on MGS2 were so amazing when it came out, I was like "How could graphics get any better!". Ha! How spoiled we all are now.

The controls are still the same as they were for each respective game when they first came out. So this may be a shock for those who've never played a Metal Gear Solid game. But shame on you for missing out on a classic! Just kidding, if you as a gamer can take the time to learn the controls, then you are in for a treat. Snake would effing eat Sam what's his name for breakfast and then spin in circles with the left analog stick 'til he pukes and then get a trophy for it. The controls may be a bit awkward but once learned they are still tight and responsive. Except maybe the first person camera view on MGS2.

And the voice-work? Sounds great, if not drawn out (somewhat like this review is turning out...). I still love it though. Especially since I already know what stuff is just silly and what's good story tellin'. The dynamics between characters are still fun to listen to. Now the sound effects and music have always been clear for this series, and thankfully this title doesn't disappoint. The music is still beautiful and dynamic, perfectly fitting the changing tones of the storyline. And thanks to my time in the military I can say that those gunfire sounds are pretty accurate. Again no complaints here.

One last thing; some people are complaining about the lack of MGS1. To quote some random guy I met the other day "Some people always want something for free". Seriously, it's available for $10 on PSN. And I don't own an XBOX so I can't say anything for them. It is a foolish complaint, there is so much on this one disc alone that asking for any more content without charging full price for this game would basically be charity work. This is Konami, not Salvation Army.

Just bought PS3 Dangerous Hunts 2013 for my son for Christmas. There is no way that I can see to calibrate the gun. So you can't "point and shoot". Takes too long to aim. Very frustating. Probably just wasted 79 bucks. I'm using it on a 55" Sony. Seems to work a little better the farther away I stand, but I went back 12-14 feet and it was still way off, and that's as far away as I can get.

Have read the same complaint on several forums. Wish I would have read them before buying it...

Out of the box the led power indicator for the sensor bar was malfunctioning. A resistor fell off the board probably during shipping, and was rattling inside the housing, so I had to solder it back on.

No calibration for the gun what so ever. Innacurate, laggy, and the heart beat sensors are really pissing me off. Sometimes it takes more than 30 seconds to get lock on an animal despite holding both sensor pads firmly and not freaking out during that time.

Swithched back to the original PS3 controller and all is well.

I feel that the game should have been Move compatible, or, at the very least, not being sold at a premium price just because it comes with a paperweight gun.

The game is pretty good with solid graphics and gameplay overall.

If Activision would release a patch for the game to add a calibration menu, and loosen up on the heartbeat sensor zoom requirements, I'd gladly buy another. But as it stands right now, it's a turd that needs polishing and never should have been released in its current state.

I spent $70 on this item and I must say it is absolutely not worth the money. The gun is horrible and hard to control the game with. If there was a way to calibrate the gun so you could actually aim with it then I would give the game a higher rating, but since you can't adjust it, don't buy the game. Really isn't all that fun to play.

The game is bad only basic elements of real hunt... with same success instead of animals could be zombies you should fight back waves of ugly animals attacks shouting crazy like in DOOM. The gun is terrible, operates through chip plactic sensor operating with 2 AA batteries which plays role of move sensor was it so difficult to do the gun which will operate through regular PS3 moove sensor why invent a new wheel? Good calibrartion is impossible, VERY USER UNFRIENDLY !!! Now I use ussual dualshock works much better. But the game is a BIG frustration, The Gun is a Huge frustration. Kids wanted to return but "Toys R Us" does not take software back. I`m surprized that ACTIVISION did this S..T

I purchased these to have multiple players for Little Big Planet. My daughter pointed out the error of my choice 30 seconds after opening the box. The controllers use USB antennas to be wireless, and you need two open USB ports to use them at the same time. Unfortunately, I only have two ports on my PS3, and one is already in use. To make matters worse, the controllers use standard batteries, and do not have the USB recharging port that the Sony models do. Returned for credit.

I bought the HIDEit mount solely with the intention of getting my PS3 off of a table I had been using previously to get it out of the reach of my small children. The mount was easy to install, looks great on the wall, and keeps my PS3 out of reach. If I had to provide any criticism it would be that there's no slot in the mount to run cables behind the PS3 when mounting on the left of a TV. I mounted it on left as the right side would've allowed the heat from the PS3 to blow right into the TV.

This is an outstanding controller. Very comfortable to hold and all buttons are in easy reach. It is already perfectly set up for use with the Street Fight IV & the default button configuration. Moves requiring quarter, half & full circle movements are incredibly easy do, thanks to the floating digital pad. And they can be done consistently. It comes a with handy Turbo button which makes characters like Chun-Li & E. Honda especially dangerous.

My only problem with the controller & its floating digital pad is that it may be too sensitive sometimes. For characters that require charge attacks or precise up and down movements of the digital pad for combos, the Dualshock 3/Six-axis controller is actually easier to use & more consistent.

If you have PS3 then you already have the standard controller & I highly suggest you try out the Fight Pads to get the most out of this game. It will probably come in handy for other fighting games as well. I fully intend to use this pad on Tekken.

Yes, this makes SF4 much more playable. A throwback Sega six button pad. The d-pad is not quite Sega style but its pretty good for fireballing motions. However, charge characters who need precise angles to execute like Balrog, you'll find your self doing dash lows, when you want to do a dash strait. You'll also find yourself doing dragon punches when you wanted to do the double motion for an ultra. A little sensitive it is.

On the shoulder buttons, they have a nice click and feel to them. Though, I wish the left shoulder was more like a trigger. The positioning kinda stinks. This button gives me all hell with ultras needing PPP. Your lf index finger needs to "curl" to press this button considering your thumb is on the d-pad.

ON the build quality, its a lot better than people have been complaining about. In the beginning the D-pad was a little "clicky" and would stick in some positions, but you need to break in in a bit.

Look, if you are serious about SF, you need a stick. This pad is 3 times as good as the PS3 pad, but 10 times worse than a stick. I opted not to go with a stick because, though I'm becoming a SF nerd, I want to be able to play with a controller for when the guys come over, not an expensive nerdy arcade stick. But I'm temped every time I cant pull off a complex link combo. The thumb is just not as dexterous as your middle fingers. But the stick is cost restrictive, so this is the next best option.

Overall good, but only if you are slightly more than a casual SF4 gamer but less than an aspiring expert.

*******UPDATE 4/13/2010************

*sigh* I really wanted this to work. But 3 months later of 20 hrs per week play time and the controller started sticking in some buttons, randomly cutting off in the middle of heated matches and lastly, button presses registering incorrectly. (PPP started coming out as MP. wth?)

Horrible quality but alas there are no real options other than getting a nerdy stick at this point..

*******UPDATE 6/22/2010************

Ok, I broke down and got a joystick. This pad really isn't worth it if your putting more than 10-20 hours a week into this game I think. It still is an upgrade from the stock pad but the quality is so shabby with extended use. You'll end up buying at least 2 in your SF lifetime and at that point you should have just gotten a stick. (It will take you a month to get used to the stick)

As a final note here...The Pad warrior tourney players DO NOT use this pad. Many of them use the stock ps3 pad. I think that says a lot overall about this product.

After struggling to do all the old special moves I know and love on the usual "split" D-pad of the PS3 controller and getting my rear handed to me, I decided it was time to go "old school" and return to my Sega roots. I'm so glad I did. This controller is not only slightly faster and more comfortable to play with, but the disc D-pad is far easier to use. Well worth the purchase if you're tired of the idiotic arrow buttons or over-sensitive sticks of your normal controller.

On a whim I preordered this controller from Amazon earlier this week. Mostly because I felt that anything would be better than the standard button layout of the Dual Shock 3 controller. I have been using the Fightpad ever since I got it in the mail and it is fantastic.

Every design of this controller is focused for fighting games, the directional pad has a smooth motion to it but with positive feedback. Quarter circle and hold moves are extremely fluid and can be performed reliably, which can't be said about the Dual Shock's dpad. The buttons are in an ergonomic position so none of them are difficult to reach. The system buttons are all recessed so they won't be pushed during a battle, and there are turbo functions to ease pulling off some of the more difficult combos.

I have always been skeptical of Madcatz products but these controllers are wonderfully designed and serve their purposes well. Sadly these controllers are not backwards compatible so they won't work with your PS2 or PS1 games. At least I couldn't get it to work.

This controller feels great in your hands. Love the click of the buttons, but the D-pad does take some getting used to. It's so large playing as charge characters...can be more of a challenge than usual. All in all though...if you put in the time...you'll be rewarded.

I was scared off by the early reviews here, but I've been using this Wireless Fender Precision Bass for over a month now with my original 60GB PS3 and I have had absolutely NO PROBLEMS thus far! Connection is strong at every distance with no interruptions, the split strum and the thumb rest feel great (although my hands get tired!), the fret buttons have a great feel to it, the strap is a definite upgrade from the ones packaged with the Special Edition bundles... I'm really, REALLY happy with it.

What I think might have happened was that the first wave of these guitars were less than stellar. I bought mine after it went out of stock the first time, so I think this latest run of Wireless Precision Basses are better.

So if you love Rock Band as much as I do, you should DEFINITELY look into this guitar. It basically reinvented the game for me!

I didn't purchase the first release of this for RB2. I figured they may have gotten the bugs I'd read about taken care of. That is absolutely not the case, at least for the model I have in hand. I'm going to return it now and will update this review if the exchanged unit actually works.

The problems:

It keeps disconnecting.

It will randomly switch the FX option for no reason.

Overdrive tilt is also wonky and only works when it wants to.

It sounds like something is rattling around in there, perhaps the gyroscope or something like that is the culprit for all the problems.

Very disappointing, especially for a luxury item.

UPDATE (first review was one star): Replacement unit arrived within a day. Amazon.com's exchange service is second to none.

That said, the new unit is better than the first. However, it still has some of the exact same issues although they happen considerably less. I can usually get through about 30 minutes of playing with no problems then for no reason the connection will drop and/or the FX switch will go wonky. I'm not sure I'm going to keep the new one but I do really like the feel of the larger guitar along with the dual strum bar. I played bass guitar many years ago and the feel certainly is nice. If the connection worked like it was supposed to and the FX switch didn't randomly change itself onscreen this guitar controller would be a keeper and a 4 star rating. One star off for not having the best response time for Overdrive.

SECOND UPDATE (total of three stars): Still having the occasional disconnect and typically once a session the FX switch problem will pop up but otherwise works just fine. Very likely going to hold onto this plastic guitar despite my worries about recurring problems listed earlier in this review.

Like everyone else to review this guitar so far, I've been plagued by connection issues with this controller.

I wanted this guitar for PS3 since the XBOX 360 version came out probably a year or more ago. Given the rave reviews for the XBOX 360 version I figured there wasn't anything to worry about with this one.

Everything seemed fine as I unpacked the box, no apparent mishandling of the package. I put it together and put in the included batteries. Seemed fine until about 30 seconds into playing the first song. For no reason at all the "Overdrive Effect" menu came up and disappeared, about 3 seconds later the controller stopped responding. I pressed every button on the controller to no avail. Rockband did not recognize that the controller had been "unplugged" (as it would if any other guitar had been disconnected) and pause the game... to the contrary the game continued to play. About the time I was going to fail the song the controller connected once again and I was able to play again. This happened randomly every 30-45 seconds if not more often. Needless to say it was very frustrating.

The guitar wasn't just going idle or anything like that. I was actively playing and it would disconnect. I'd tried new name brand batteries, I'd tried hitting the "sync" button on the bottom edge of the bass, and it was just not working correctly.

So I worked with Amazon to get a replacement sent out and the replacement does it too! I don't understand how a product can get shipped out with these kind of issues. The disconnects make this controller completely unplayable.

I can tell you that the idea of this guitar is strong, I usually play Bass on expert and consistently get in the 90%+ and I could tell that the guitar would improve my playing especially on the really fast runs, but I just can't use this guitar when it won't stay connected.

I had purchased one of these around a year and a half ago (if I recall correctly) and right out of the box I started experiencing the same problems many others are complaining about with the signal dropping and the effects menu popping up in the middle of a song despite the fact I hadn't touched it. I put up with that ever since though it never really interfered so badly that it ruined my overall experience. It began several months ago to act as though the batteries were dying even though they weren't that old. The power switch would be turned on, the light surrounding the PlayStation button would flash red and then nothing. I assumed perhaps I had played the game more or longer than I had remembered or realized, but after a moment, and messing with the batteries which at the time appeared to be the 'fix', it would always come back on and work (although the effects menu pop-up problem still occurred). Then about a month ago it just refused to turn on. The light would flash and then nothing. I'd turn it off and turn it back on...same thing. I changed the batteries and same thing again. I bought brand new fresh batteries (the previous ones had been in a package sitting around for a while) and tried them and the same thing again. The red light will only flash once in a while; most of the time it does nothing. I opened it up figuring there's a loose connection somewhere, but nothing appears to be wrong inside. Frustrating to say the least.

I had heard about Mad Catz having made a new version and I really enjoy playing with the bass controller, so I decided to try again. I am happy to report that the new bass which arrived this afternoon plays perfectly. No problems whatsoever. I played through several songs and the only problem I had during that time was if and when I missed a note. No dropped signals, no effects menu pop-up. I can even tell the difference in the way this one feels compared to the original which I still have. The old one's neck always seemed flimsy to me. This one feels far more sturdy and has a different texture on the back (the old one's neck is smooth). Even the usb dongle has a different design; possibly the connection problem was located there (online forums indicate a connection issue in the older ones that is sometimes resolved by using a usb extension cable and attaching the dongle to the guitar which would tend to support that idea).

There is one thing that might worry someone who purchases one of these newer ones. The sticker on the back is still the Rock Band 2 sticker (the guitar comes in a Rock Band 3 labeled box), however the product version number is clearly a later version, so don't be discouraged. I assume Mad Catz is merely using up the stickers they had already rather than spend more on new ones just so they say "Rock Band 3".

Bottom line, with the newer versions Mad Catz seems to have corrected all the problems of earlier bass controllers. This one works great and has a great price. All the other colors are available out there, but they're at least $30 more. It looks like Amazon won't have the seafoam green much longer, so you better grab one now while you can. At this price, they won't last long.

Want PlayStation 3 Rock Band 3 Wireless Fender Precision Bass Controller Discount?

I have to concur with the above review. I got this for my birthday this year, and was excited to use this controller to play some of the RB songs that I enjoy playing bass on. I didn't even get through one song before all the classic symptoms began to rear their ugly heads. Random Disconnects, the effects window randomly popping up, etc.

I had other concerns with this controller as well, however. First off, upon checking the branding sticker on the back of the controller, instead of saying "Rock Band 3" as I would have expected, it actually said "Rock Band 2." Also, one of the manuals that came with the controller said "Rock Band 2" in the headers. Additionally, there were scuff marks on the front and back of the bass body. As the box said "Rock Band 3" all over it, I fully believe that Mad Katz is repacking their old RB2 basses in RB3 boxes. Unacceptable.

When Rock Band 3 was announced and it was announced that Mad Katz would be creating the controllers, I had my doubts that MK would be able to rectify their old ways and make quality controllers. Those doubts have now been confirmed. I will most likely never knowingly buy a Mad Katz controller ever again.

I used it for 2 hours today while playing Resistance and noticed it does indeed keep your hands from sweating but that's about all it does. The speed control button only works when it wants to and the d-pad gets stuck either in the up or down directions almost every time you try to use it. It also didn't feel as responsive as the SIXAXIS. My biggest complaint though is that there is no PS button! There is no way to go back to the ps3's main menu when you are playing a game or watching a movie without the PS button. You can't even power on/off the system with this controller. Inventive idea but with many flaws.

If you don't have a PS3, then the comments by the other reviewers below are probably cryptic. I own a PS3 and when someone said, "No PS button" I realized that it was off my list as a possibility but after reading through the reviews I realized that there were probably a lot of people who would not understand what this means and were they buying a controller the same day they were buying a PS3, well, they might consider this Logitech is a good name in keyboards and they usually get it right.

The PS button serves as an "on" button when the PS3 is off, thus allowing you to turn on the PS3 from the controller. (This works whether the controller is wired or wireless). When playing PS2 games on the PS3, you need to push the PS button to reinitialize the controller when stopping or starting the game. When playing PS2 games, you use virtual memory chips that are stored on the hard drive you "break out" of the game to move the chips to different slots using the PS button. Some games only access the first of the two virtual slots, some access both of them but won't switch where they will save, but you can get the same function as you would with physical chips by breaking into the monitor and moving virtual chips from slot to slot while the game is running (but suspended).

When you want to stop a game, ps2 or ps3, you hold the PS button for a couple seconds and a menu comes up. This allows you to determine the state of charge of your controller if you are using it wirelessly, turn off one controller, turn on a controller (so that you can join a game) renumber controllers and so on and so forth. It also provides the only access that allows you to stop a game which allows you to access the browser that is built in to the system, download demos and complete games and upgrades that might be available through the Sony store and so forth.

The point is that without the PS button, the controller is more or less useless especiallly for PS2 games because they require that you press them to initialize the controller when you start the game. I'm not sure how I could use it there may be some other way for it to get initialized.

Now, I'm currently playing "Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII". I've managed to get as far as the first battle of Midway. It is a game which can be played with or without the tilt and when the tilt is on, there are two patterns of controls one puts the rudder on the second stick so that it does the same thing the pedals normally do and that is the one I use.

But it would not be a good game without the tilt. I've played it both ways, and, well, tilt just wins. There are a ton of things I hate about the PS3 stock controller (the biggest of which is that the "L2" and "R2" can be hit accidentally too easily, you have no idea how many times I accidentally dropped hand grenades in Tomb Raider Legend while picking up the controller after a break), but I won't replace it with something that does not have a PS button, and I probably won't replace it with something that does not have the sixaxis stuff. Yes, that probably means I'll be using Sony controllers forever...but Sony could license the fan from Logitech.

I expect more games to put real function on the tilt in the future. That will further make controllers like this one less than useful. Maybe there will be a version two with tilt and a PS button I'd kinda like a bigger controller myself.

I bought this for my son's new PS3. We have returned two of them. The first one did not work at all and the second one would not work with any of the PS3 games. Spend the extra $$ and buy the Sony brand. It is well worth it.

Want Logitech Playstation 3 ChillStream Controller Discount?

I say it's cheap for a ps3 controller. it's only good when you don't want to spend 50 bucks on another controller for your third or fourth controllers, and for around 15 bucks its worth it. Let's say you already have two sixaxis controllers and just want more controllers to play with some buddies on call of duty 4 or something, this is it. Don't buy it if you going to replace your only controller that has the sixaxis and the PS button, thats the only thing.

Great game! I really have only played the campaign mission so far, but it's been excellent, so far. Really interesting concept, great visuals, really engaging game play that is tied into the story line well, plenty of twists and turns along the way to keep your interest, and the controls work really well. In addition to the common run and gun controls, with squating, you're also equiped with a super-suit that has an invisibility cloak and increased armor, which you can turn on although both will consume some energy, as long as they are engaged. I also like the infrared/night vision style goggles, that make enemies stand out and become easier to spot. I've never been terribly big on FPS games, but this one is among the best I've seen and I really love it!
