This is a great Tactical Rpg. I look forward to see more games from CYANIDE studios. This game is on the PSN network to download. But i prefer physical copy. Took a while to ship from the UK to the states. But it was worth it.

I bought this game for my youngest son because he heard that this retail version would work on his PlayStation 3. This game worked like a charm.

The oddity of there being Orcs and Goblins as main playable characters in a game really attracted me to this title. I wanted to know the other side of things rather than being an elf, human, or dwarf. Gameplay is similar to Dragon Age Origins, and SWKOTOR which for me was a plus. This consists of turn based party driven (in this case a duet of an Orc 'tank' and a Goblin 'rogue') strategy, with elements of role play where the main characters talk to NPCs, collect armor, weapons, etc... I personally enjoy these turn based strategy RPGs with a darker tone. Story wise this game is below the two games mentioned above but still has its moments. Most of its charm is in the two main characters conversations/camaraderie and in the concept itself (Orcs and Goblins instead of humans and elves) as opposed to the final execution. The graphics are nice, characters are average (in terms of current games), it has a dreary over tone with rain and dark woodland towns that comes off just above average in terms of ascetics. Towns are empty linear paths with some open areas that are usually there for combat. There are bases where there are allies and merchants to engage in conversation. Dialog choices do effect conversation outcomes as well as choices in routes to take or whether to be aggressive rather than passive and clever. Voice acting has some unneeded profanity to add some kind of misguided edge. Something like this was executed much better in the Witcher games. The darker fantasy fits but stumbles on itself with the writing. I wanted to like this game more than I really did. Bottom line if you have an interest in these type of games and are looking for something new rent it, or if you have a decent PC check Steam for a good deal.

I still play the original GR.Which I believed set the standard for a tactical shooter.

The later titles I was very disappointed with and felt they were "Dumbed" down.

This review is my initial impressions and subject to change as I do in most of my reviews.

Pros:

1)Graphics were well done IMHO everything seemed to be going smooth.

2)Sound is excellent I have a lot of hearing loss and had no problems hearing the game.

Even with a intercooler running.

3)Weapons were well rendered and the ability to customize is fun.I do gunsmith work on the side and can say some of the mods were impractical but it's a game. They all had their own distinct sound.I recommend choosing random for your weapon as I could spend hours changing parts.I would have liked a jam or 2 thrown in for a touch of uh oh.

4)Voice acting is good so far with the usual wisecracks and such as troops tend to do.

5)Some of the future tech is very cool I enjoy sneaking around with the cloak and the UAV is fun to use.

6)I enjoyed doing sync shots and the fire fights could get intense on Elite.

7)The controls were easy to learn not much of a learning curve. The Tutorials are make it easy to learn the game.

8)I like the challenges to unlock weapons and gear which make it worth going back to redux missions.

9)The hand to hand kills are a nice touch to the game.

Cons so far:

1)I find the maps a little to restrictive and not enough room to maneuver.

2)I have found the enemy AI to be very easy even on elite.Friendly AI seems decent so far subject to change.

3)I found I needed to get used to the camera angles.

4)The cover system seemed not to work well.As I play and get used to it I might change my mind.

My thoughts:

I approached this game with a open mind and find I am enjoying it.I like the sci-fi aspects of it.

As I have only played the first 2 missions I will not comment on the campaign length or the story.

Ubi-soft did a good job on the tutorials and there is not a big learning curve.I did find enemy AI a bit dumb but as I play I might change my mind on the AI of the game. The ability to customize weapons and load out for missions make this better than other shooters.I feel this game has a good cross of COD/BF and OFP.

Players will need to think and you can flank enemies instead of shooting it out with them.I would have like free roam like OFP DR as I felt the maps were to small not as bad as BF or COD.That is my opinion,I attempted to play like COD and found you would go down quick.I did find the stealth missions to be to easy IMO.This might change as I play. All in all I'm having fun with this game and have no regrets yet.I only hope the campaign is of good length as I feel that is lacking in many games today.

I have very poor internet in my area so I cannot do a review of online content. Please accept my apology on that aspect.

I will update this review as I play more and can't wait to get out of work to play.

Stay tuned for updates.

Update 5-24-12

After playing more I'm really liking this game.

I love using the UAV to scout ahead and mark targets for sync shots. The only habit I need to break is to not sit back during fire fights and just mark targets for my squad.I managed to not fire a shot during one engagement.

I agree with other reviewers on the cut scenes not looking as good as game play.To me that is minor and not worth trashing the game over.I also like that you do not get endless waves of enemies like other games once you secure a area it is secure.

I do have a few gripes.

1)I do not like the lack of control when you go into diamond formation during a rescue.

It seemed to me it was on rails and I really could not move or take cover.

2)Lack of control for your AI teammates I do not know why that is not on this game.

It would have been fun to issue basic move orders.I would have liked the ability to use formations such as wedge, line etc.All I can do so far is mark targets to focus fire on.The AI will move on it's own.

On a positive note your teammates do not get in the way of your fire and are good at reviving you if you get shot.

I like trying to do the challenges during the mission to unlock weapons.

I do find the missions to be short but that might change as I progress.

I am getting used to the cover system as I play.

Update 5-25-12

I'm finding as you progress you unlock more gear NVGs a UGV which kicks serious butt.

So far the story is progressing along with a semi-predictable plot.I'm sure there will be a twist somewhere along the line. The missions are starting to get a little more tactical and challenging. There is also a mission where you get to be a gunner from a Helo like GR AW2.Players can also issue orders to heal a squadmate.

I consider the campaign to be far superior to MW3 or BF3.I only wish I had better service to try it online.

I recommend trying to complete the challenges as it is worth it to unlock better weapons and parts.

So far I have found no glitches and framerates are smooth on my PS3 Fat.

5-29-12

Final thoughts I give this game 4 stars overall.

I enjoyed the campaign and the challenges will keep players going back to complete them.

It took me around 16 hrs to complete this game on elite.I felt it was to short hence why I gave it 4 stars.

I did find as you progress the missions got more challenging and I had to think and not charge in.

Gamers of all levels should enjoy this game it is simple to learn and well done.

As a Ghost Recon "Purist" I could have nit picked this game.I chose to approach it with a open mind and I'm glad I did.

The game requires 6.5gigs of hard drive space, there is a very small update already, it is PS Move (gunsmith use only) and 3D compatible, an it requires a Uplay account and passport code to play online (which is included).

I've always been a fan of the Ghost Recon games because of the third person military action as well as the strong stealth aspect of the game play. I have been waiting for some time now to get my hands on Future Soldier as I waited through all of the release-date push backs and delays. I must say it is an amazing game. The graphics are phenomenal, the control is tight and the over-all game play is very realistic and entertaining. Sync Shot is a really cool feature where you tag multiple enemies and your team takes all of them out instantly. I think I am more into being alone in the game, however working as a team greatly has its advantages in Future Soldier. The game is very well put together and I can tell a lot of time went into the menu, weapon and inventory system.

PROS

+ Well detailed graphics, very realistic and natural looking. The scenes and maps are very well laid out.

+ Perfectly crafted control and weapon system. Creating your own weapon is a blast.

+ The game is fast, controls are very well responsive and not sluggish at all. It is a smooth running game, no glitching or lagging.

+ Music, voice-acting and sounds effects are very well produced. I was blown away by the clarity and the level on my surround speakers.

+ Weapons are fully customizable and gadgets are very helpful. Camouflage is very cool.

+ Multiplayer is incredibly fun when you have the right teammates.

CONS

Some of the cut scenes and the character models seem dated and less detailed than the actual game play.

There is no slit-screen (couch) co-op in the game. All co-op is online.

Like in past Ghost Recon games the area is limited and you are warned when you are leaving the area. It gives the appearance of a larger area, yet it still is quite linear.

In combat your progression options are sometimes limited and you must stick with your team.

There are a few small clipping issues like floating objects or your characters arms not linking around an enemies neck when doing a stealth kill, very minor though.

In the snow levels you cannot see your footprints in the snow. Also when you are invisable you can still see your shadow, which you think the enemy would see.

Multiplayer is a huge amount of fun and quite a challenge, but it is a must to have good teammates. It makes it difficult when your teammates just shoot everything. When you get hit you can spawn back to a standard location or to a teammate. It is very fast paced and cover is the key. Cover is also important in single player, however with it is a necessity in multiplayer.

This may be the first time I have ever said this, but I enjoy the multiplayer much more than the single player. The single player is great and it is a very solid game, however the multiplayer is just so much fun.

I like having the option to play how I want to play in the single player campaign. Ghost Recon Future Soldier gives you a large area to work your way though, you could either go in guns blazing or you could take your time and sneak in and stealth take down your enemies. I have played one area over and over again until I am happy with the way it went down. It is very well put together and the maps are well designed and laid out. If you stealth sneak into an area and are seen, you will alert many more enemies than if you were quiet and careful and were not seen. It is a lot of fun and quite an enjoyable challenge.

The fictional futuristic style gadgets are very cool and as you progress through the game you get more and more, however you don't always have all of them for every level, it depends on the mission. The gadgets give you a heads up on the enemies and sometimes makes the game too easy, however using the gadgets in different ways and in different areas really mixes the game up and keeps it interesting.

Over-all Ghost Recon Future Soldier has met what I was expecting out of the game. I am very happy with it and I highly recommend this for gamers who want a smart military shooter. Future Soldier is not for gamers who are expecting another cookie cutter Call of Duty game. This game is smart and realistic in that you need to plain your missions and attacks and take your time. It is a stealth shooter which requires you to think. The movement and sliding from cover to cover is very fast and the controls come very naturally. Highly addicting game.

Game on!

Buy Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier Now

Well, Ghost Recon is finally here. After all of the videos, hype, and especially the many release delays, could this game be worth it?

CAMPAIGN/STORY: The campaign is a 14 mission and 12 plus hour experience across the globe in order to track down the person responsible for smuggling a warhead.

GAMEPLAY: The game play is just outstanding. I have never played a military shooter that makes me feel like such a bad***. The game is based on being tactical, which means patiently sneaking around maps, eliminating enemies, and capturing the objective, without alerting an enemy, just like the Navy Seals do. With that being said, I feel like I am playing a gaming version of Act of Valor. With that being said, it is not a SEAL game, but it definitely has the essence of what one SHOULD be.

The game play is very fast and every movement is VERY responsive. When running to get cover, the camera shakes, reminiscent of the football game, Backbreaker Football. The shootouts are very realistic and intense, especially in the urban maps. There is just back and forth shooting. Meanwhile, civilians are caught up in the midst of it. Engage enemies carefully, when surrounded by civilians! Kill too many and the mission is over.

Cover can be manipulated by gunfire. Therefore, if an enemy is behind weak objects, such as wood, it can be shot through. This goes both ways for the player. Sometimes, cover cannot be relied on, too heavily because it CAN be manipulated by gunfire. Sometimes, the player can be "suppressed" by heavy gunfire. The player is virtually stuck behind this cover, until the heavy gunfire ceases. Meanwhile, camera shakes and the sixaxis controller vibrates vigorously.

The hit detection is also outstanding. No unloading a full clip to kill enemies. A few shots and "tango eliminated!" Hand to hand tactics can be used, as well. They are random action via snapping an enemy's neck, butting him with the weapon and "finishing" him off with a brutal stomp. I like using the stealth kills, such as snapping enemies' necks or shooting them in the back of the head from point-blank range.

Keep in mind, stealth doesn't ALWAYS apply during parts of certain missions. Sometimes, a mistake can be made by the player and alert enemies, which leads to massive firefights. In addition, when an objective is obtained, many enemies may arrive, which means also means a massive firefight. Reverting back to stealth, some parts of missions does NOT allow alerting enemies. In other words, if an alert is raised, mission over.

EQUIPMENT/GADGETS: A Ghost Recon game would not be a game, without gadgets. First, there is the infamous optical camouflage. The optical camouflage is the most important piece of equipment, which the Ghost have. This is what keeps the Ghost concealed, throughout the maps. Nothing has to be manually done to activate it. Just go in prone, crouch or find cover. Then, it activates. The only time the optical camouflage deactivates is when spotted or when firing. The optical camouflage cannot be seen from a distance, but if in the sight of an enemy, a warning signal will come up, which indicates suspicion upon the enemy.

The UAV is easy to use. Just send it through the air, and it spots each enemy throughout the map. Not to mention, it tells, which kind of weapon they have. Then, there is the sensor grenade. When thrown, it is able to detect nearby enemies on land AND through walls. Then, there is the magnetic X-ray. This device allows the player to detect enemies through solid surfaces, and detect metal objects, such as weapons. I once saw the engine on the inside of a truck. There are OTHER surprise gadgets to use on the game, but that is a secret......

GRAPHICS/VISUALS: Contrary to what some opinions, the graphics are very good in their own kind of way, meaning not to expect vivid colored graphics of games, such as Max Payne 3, Uncharted or MW2. The Ghosts, weapons, enemies, and maps are very detailed and sharp. However, the player models, without the mask on some cut scenes look dated. However, keep in mind that this is 3D game! Therefore, the graphics SHOULD be enhanced with a 3D HDTV and glasses.

GUERRILLA MODE: This new mode allows up to four players to face 50 waves of enemies. Of course, the more successful a player is, the increase of difficulty in the enemies.

MULTIPLAYER: Multiplayer plays similar to single player, meaning it maintains its 3rd person game play. Cover is a necessity and so is teamwork. The modes in the game are more mission-based.

SOUND/VOICE: This game has Dolby Surround Sound. However, it is not quite as crisp as Battlefield 3 Limited Edition. Still, hearing the weapons being fired is a realistic experience. Each weapon has its own distinct sound. Even the sound of the weapons being reloaded is authentic. The clarity in the Ghosts' voices during game play is just intense. The voices sound very gritty, especially when they inform each other on what is going on around them.

TEAM A.I.: Very smart and tactical. The player is in good hands with this group. They alert the player of the surroundings on the map. For example, if an enemy is spotted, they will tell the EXACT location and what type of weapon he has. Not to mention, they ONLY fire, when fired upon or given instructions to. With that being said, the team cannot manually be commanded to do anything, other than shoot. They mostly move about on their own. As a fan of the Rainbow Six series, that is sort of disappointing to me. However, I believe they do this on Future Soldier because it was very EXHAUSTING to command a squad and use all kinds of gadgets in the previous Ghost Recon titles.

The Sync Shot is outstanding. This is a feature that the developers of SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy Seals failed miserably to accomplish. The max of four targets can be marked via ground or UAV. In order to take down all four targets, one shot MUST be made by the player. There is nothing like commanding your team to mark targets, and simultaneously downing enemies with single shot in slo-mo, when this is done. On the contrary, mark less than four targets, and the team can be commanded to take out all three, simultaneously.

WEAPONS: A player can choose over 20 million weapon combinations in the all new Gunsmith mode. This mode enables a player disassemble and modify a weapon down to the barrel, gas system, magazine, muzzle, optics, paint, side rail, stock, trigger group, and the under barrel. In addition, the customized weapon combination can be tested out at the range.

VERDICT: If you are into tactical shooters, look no further than Ghost Recon Future Solder. The game has everything a player can want in a shooter, such as tactics, stealth, firefights, stereo sound, customizable weapons, gadgets, fast game play, and good graphics. The UbiSoft team took a lot of time to make this game, but it paid off and made this game definitely worth the wait. This is why I give this game five out of five stars.

I have been playing this game since 12 this afternoon and man is it addicting! Intense firefights in almost every corner but it is easily conquered with a good squad! You can either play single or co-op campaign with up to 3 players online! With gunsmith you can create/customize more than 20 million authentic weapons! (but you have to unlock those items first by playing the campaign). I pre-ordered Future Soldier from GameStop and it turned out to be a great move because with the pre-order (signature edition) I received a bonus map, bonus weapons (mk14, ak-47) bonus headgear and bonus weapon skins which look great! There are 10 multiplayer maps and for those who pre-ordered may be more according to where you reserved your copy from. This game is definitely SQUAD based as Ghost Recon games always been. Without a cooperating squad you will not do well. Or at least I didn't it also helps to have your mic ON. You need to watch each others backs and remember this is NOT Call of Duty or Battlefield, where you can run and gun even though they are great games. The graphics are fantastic and although it may not seem as real as Battlefield I believe it is still amazing because what good would it be to have two of the same games?

I just finished playing Guerrilla mode with my buddy and what it is are waves of enemies who try to beat the crap out of you and according to the difficulty level you select. The enemies become much harder and their tactics also change as you go up in waves which there are 50. Now when you and your friend(s) die you will need to start from the very beginning of the waves.. I'm just kidding it let's you start from the last wave so if you are on wave 30 and fail you will start on wave 29 since you didn't complete 30. You will need your friend(s) to be in complete sync with you but it is tons of fun and I'm sure you guys will enjoy it as much as I have! And there are 5 default maps you can play in with another map locked which you can purchase using Uplay points. You receive more points with completing challenges which Uplay have put up and this goes for selected Ubisoft games such as Assassin's Creed.

The resolution output for Ghost Recon is 720p as it says on the back of the case but do not fear because even if you are playing on a 1080p resolution TV, the game still looks fantastic! It's a shame it doesn't go to 1080p though.. :(

Again guys, this game is awesome! Epic single player with co-op and amazing multiplayer! You will not be disappointed!

I gave it 5/5 because it's just awesome! :D

Oh yes I almost forgot, Ghost Recon Future Soldier DLC comes out in June I believe and it is called Arctic Strike. On the instruction manual it reads, "New downloadable content coming this summer!

New maps! New mode! New weapons! And more!"

So there you have it folks, I sincerely hope my review has helped you in choosing to purchase this game because it really is tons of fun!

Want Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier Discount?

unlike a lot of reviewers who have only completed 4-6 missions and wanted to get their reviews up (i don't really blame them, but how can you review a product you've not finished?), i have completed GRFS almost twice now. my first play through took 12-13 hours, with several restarted checkpoints. if you're an FPS pro, you'll probably complete it under 10. if you like to take your time and plan (and try to complete specific challenges), count on an even dozen or more.

this is my first experience with a ghost recon game and i have to say that i'm very impressed. in an age where most shooters keep you on the rails and have you kill endless waves of enemies, GRFS is indeed a breath of fresh air. this isn't a monster-in-the-closet shooter. it takes time, patience (i admit to more than few expletives while playing), and lo and behold, strategy.

as with most shooters, plot is secondary. there are some bad russians. weapons caches. coups. yadda yadda yadda. we all know the drill. thankfully, GRFS has enough going for it that you don't really need an intricate plot to have fun. the set pieces are varied and dynamic africa, russia, bolivia, pakistan, etc. the graphics look pretty good somewhere between COD (dated) and BF3 (impressive). i was particularly impressed with the lighting and color during the last few missions. the artists did a fine job. i have a 3D TV and found the 3D to just be ok. nothing special. it didn't really add much to the game, to tell you the truth (batman: arkham city still has the best 3D, in my opinion). the sound, too, is pretty good. not BF3 good, but close enough. the controls are responsive, but a bit fidgity. several times i accidentally vaulted over cover and got my head handed to me.

speaking of having your head handed to you, you will die. a lot. if you're not careful, it doesn't take more than two or three bullets to take you down. sometimes another ghost (30k, Ghost Lead, Pepper) will come and revive you, but sometimes they won't. depends on the situation. the AI can be dumb at times, but they're also nutty accurate. they will also suppress you with heavy MGs and LMGs. stay in cover! always!

the challenges give you a reason to replay the game. each mission has a weapon challenge (kill x amount of guys with x gun), a tactical challenge (make to checkpoint a and exfil without raising the alarm) and a ghost challenge (finish with a ghost score above 60 i have no clue how the ghost score is tallied, but hey). on your first play through, you simply won't be able to complete some of the challenges because the gun you may need won't be available to you or two tactical challenges will contradict each other and you'll have to pick one of the two, or three.

the highly touted gunsmith is pretty cool. sure, you have twenty million combinations at your disposal, but you'll probably find two or three guns you like best and stick with them. GRFS also has a gun range for you test out your creations (i've been wondering why COD or BF haven't been doing that for ages).

the multiplayer is OK. i played a couple of matches and didn't really find it all that compelling. it's kind of like uncharted's multiplayer, only with fancier guns and camo. guerrilla mode is pretty challenging. i tried it alone and lasted a round and a half. i'd like to try it with more people, but i don't know anyone else who has this game.

there's also subtle and not-so-subtle humor. towards the end of the game the ghost squad's gotta huff it up 15 flights of stairs to deal with some snipers. as they're ascending a flight of stairs, one of the ghosts says, "why do i feel like someone should be throwing barrels down at us" (donkey kong reference, i assume); in a cut scene you see a solder bragging about how he sniped a pilot out of a helicopter (obviously reference to BFBC2 bush wookies who think they're the hot shiz); and another time there's a veiled reference to russian strongman vladamir putin when the ghosts ask the russian president about a time who wrestled a grizzly bear to the ground. i'm not sure most people will catch the humor, but it's there.

all in all, i really had a great time playing GRFS. i'm already looking forward to another installment.

Pros

Good story and voice acting

The visuals are magnificentI found my self looking outside of Cloud City rather than killing stormtroopers at one point

When you fight a jedi boss the game switches to a wide-angle pulled-back cinematic camera reminiscent of the duel between Dokku, Obiwan and Anakin in Revenge of the Sith. This is one of the best ways I've seen of taking advantage of the HD screen format and resolution. When you Force push your enemy across the room it really does remind you a lot of the movies.

Sound track is goodsome new themes and old themes are enhanced.

Even though NPCs appear to have the ability to block your force powers or lightsaber blows, each one of them has a particular weakness you can exploit so it's not really a problem

Cons

Locking on to objects is sometimes clumsyPsiOps did it much better

A few bugs here and there

As compared to say Jedi Outcast / Academy it doesn't have as rich a Force upgrade mechanismmainly because the story doesn't really lend itself to it

Camera needs to be manually adjusted frequently

Too short

There are some frustrating jumping puzzles especially with a problematic camera

Considering I've been waiting since Jedi Academy for another Star Wars game, and the fact that the average budget for a video game is over $40 Million, spending $60 on a decent Star Wars game seems like a bargain to me. I have no complaints.

Comparison to the Wii version:

Wii version uses canned Star Wars musical score. Reminds you of playing the old Jedi Power Battles game.

Wii controls are quite well thought out and does make Force wielding fun.

But over time the Wii interaction does tend to get fatiguing.

The visuals between the Wii and PS3 are night and dayincluding the cutscenes which are rendered using the in-game engine. The Wii's visuals just look really dated/primitive compared to the PS3's. E.g. on the first mission on Kassyk, if you look at what's happening in the background on the PS3, there are stormtroopers on a beach-head in the distance slowly advancing, and shooting and then dying. It's gratuitous but it's beautifully done. None of this made it to the Wii. Of course this is understandable since the Wii is a less capable system.

Wii provides additional game levels not provided in the PS3 game.

The Duel Mode on the Wii can only be played with another player, rather than with an AItoo bad.

If you own both the PS3 and Wii, I recommend buying the PS3 version and maybe the Wii version when it goes on sale. TFU is visually the most stunning Star Wars title to-date and missing the opportunity to experience it's full visual splendor would be a shame.

This game is pretty good but could have, and should have been great but as usual they just decided to get too cute. Using the force powers to dangle stormtroopers in the air, throw them around, and hit them with lightning (as seen in the trailers) is lots of fun for a while but that doesn't even come close to making up for all the areas of the game where the designers just thought it would be funny to frustrate the crap out of us. FYI...NOT A LOT OF SITH LORDS SPEND 20 MINUTES TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO CROSS A FREAKING JUNK PILE!!!! Oh and how the hell does a junked robot steal the force energy from me?!! Oh how I dreamed of the day when I could become a sith lord and fight a giant junk robot and spend a solid hour doing stupid jump puzzles and falling into lava. Why? Why do people think it's funny to frustrate us? The game has a great storyline, almost as good as KOTOR, but that doesn't make up for the glitches and frustrations. After not even 3 days of owning it, I beat the game despite the frustrations and glitches, that tells me they were a little short on content for it to have been hyped for so long.Don't misunderstand, this is a must have for any Star Wars fan, but it is not worth the 59.99 price tag and doesn't live up to the hype. Wait for the price to drop to at least 39.99 and then get it.

Buy Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Now

The Force Unleashed is absolutely horrible. Do not buy it.

While the story line is good, the game is incredibly short. It only takes a day or two to play through the entire game.

Also, the game play itself is very weak, and it has no relationship to the Star Wars Universe. The main character has more force powers than 100 Jedi put together. He can blast through blast doors. He can throw people and objects hundreds of feet away, and he can even rip a Star Destroyer from the sky. Yet, for some reason, Darth Vader and the Emperor give him trouble later in the game. This is odd given that their force powers are no where close to this strong.

Perhaps the troubling aspect to the game was the main character's weapon, his lightsaber. Starkiller's lightsaber works like no other lightsaber. His works like a glowing baseball bat. Every enemy must be hit multiple times with the glowing baseball bat in order to kill them. It doesn't cut through anything.

This isn't exactly what one would expect from a Star Wars game. However, it is what everyone has come to expect from George Lucas: a sub par product with little thought given to how it fits into the Star Wars Universe that Lucas created over 30 years ago. This game is proof again that George Lucas has completely lost his touch. It is also proof that there's no one at Lucas Arts who is willing to tell the Emperor that he has no clothes.

Again, this is a horrible game. Don't waste your money on it.

Read Best Reviews of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Here

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is a truly epic failure considering what this game almost could have been. The physics engine is amazingly powerful, the graphics are awesome, the story is pretty good and you can do some really, really cool things with force powers. So why 1 star? Well, because The Force Unleashed is so heavily flawed and broken that it ruins what could have been a game of the year. Here are the list of flaws:

1. Aiming. Its basically random sometimes. It can be very difficult to target exactly who or what you want with your awesome force powers. What is really frustrating is that in the demo aiming was substantially better. How does that happen?

2. Button-press boss kills. Those horribly annoying button press kills to finish off boss's cinematically are everywhere. And worse is that they instantly fail if you happened to hit an extra lightsaber attack at the end of beating on the boss.

3. Character control is seriously flawed. By this I mean that you don't always go where you want your character to go nor do you jump where you think you will go all the time. The Force Unleashed has several points that want to be a platformer, but character movement is horrible so that the heavy platforming areas just get to be frustrating chores. Especially the parts with instant-deah falls. The control problem is exacerbated by the next problem...

4. Poor camera angles. This problem doesn't occur all the time, but it seems to occur mostly when you don't want it, such as boss fights where the angle shifts suddenly so that you can't get a good grasp on where you are in the environment or say when you get swarmed by a dozen stormtroopers.

5. Overly linear level design. You basically do nothing but follow the path in front of you. There are a couple of times when you have more then one option, but those are few and far between. And frankly it really doesn't matter which option you take anyways. You don't notice this right away, but eventually it starts to get to you.

6. Poor AI. The enemy AI very easily gets hung up on environmental obstacles. Its pretty annoying when you kill a jedi because he got stuck on a pillar in the floor.

7. Combat does not flow well. While you can do some amazing kills in combat (such as flinging enemies into one another), it can also be horribly frustrating. Sometimes when you get close in to your enemies you can swing your lightsaber and sometimes you can't. You're supposed to be a jedi (or a sith) and the combat doesn't reflect that so well. Lucasarts should have played some God of War before they let this game out of QA.

8. Graphical glitches happen a bit too often. The physics engine is really powerful, so I'm somewhat leanient on deformable terrain clipping somewhat, but the parts when all of a sudden whole sections of the level blinked out were a bit too much. This wasn't common, but it was almost a game stopper for me.

LucasArts used to make amazing games. If they'd only went back and updated Jedi Outcast instead of making this garbage they'd have had a fantastic game on their hands. Instead they created a pile of garbage

I enjoyed the demo for this game very much because I felt like a dangerous, powerful jedi. I was frying gangs of stormtroopers with my force lightning and wading through their puny blaster fire to cut them all down with my lightsaber. Only when I bought the game did I discover that the demo features a completely "maxed-out" character, and that the demo level's entertaining mayhem is not at all representative of the game as a whole.

Your character does not feel strong until the very end of the game, if then--a full combo of melee attacks doesn't kill some regular stormtroopers, and enemies with overpowered bazookas and flamethrowers (read--every enemy from about mission 5 on) can kill you from full health before you can even turn your camera to figure out who's hitting you. The big creatures like AT-STs and Rancors are pretty much all the same--throw rocks at their heads until they die.

The story is great. In fact, I wish I knew more about the characters I was introduced to. The cutscenes seemed to give you the bare minimum, as if I had already seen the movie and was playing the game.

Also, the game has a lot of frustrating bad design. If my character steps forward with each attack, don't make him fight on narrow catwalks. Game designers should have learned that players don't like enemies who can knock them down and juggle them to death a long time ago, too. I felt like I was being rewarded for being as cheap as possible, and wound up running straight through several areas after dying repeatedly. I really needed a "fire from cover" mechanic that allowed me to target items for the "force grab" maneuver without standing in the line of fire, and I was constantly pelted by off-camera enemies and enemies far outside my target range. Finally--I didn't like "press this button now" scenes on the old Dragon's Lair arcade game, I didn't like them in Resident Evil 4, and I don't like them now. This game's take on them is 100% pointless--if you miss the button, the guy breaks out of his headlock and you grab him again for another try--repeat as necessary. All in all, this game plays like a super-nice looking Nintendo 64 game.

In the game's defense, the visuals and sound are spectacular, and really immersed me in the "Star Wars" experience--that is, until the bad stuff brought me back down to earth (remember in the movies when Luke had to fight the stormtroopers with shields that blocked the force? Neither do I...) The only thing I can say against the graphics is that Juno Eclipse has really freaky huge teeth that distracted me during the cutscenes.

All in all, buy this game expecting it to be a beautiful button-masher and you won't be disappointed.

I didn't go into FIFA Street 3 with very high expectations. In fact, I've been burned by EA BIG before. But believe it or not, this game was just plain fun from the jump. You really can just sit down, turn it on, and just start playing. Combine that with my very casual understanding of the international soccer scene, and the fact that this game remained fun and enjoyable speaks volumes for it's replay value and staying power in anyones game library.

STAND-ALONE: I really felt like I could have just played match after match until my eyes turned to dust. The controls are easy to learn and adjust to, and the competition stays challenging without becoming impossibly difficult to overcome.

MULTI-PLAYER: Well, what can I say...the opportunity to set up a match online between America and Germany that actually involves someone from AMERICA and GERMANY just has a coolness factor all it's own.

Definite rent-to-own title. Don't miss out on an opportunity to play one of the best straight-outta-da-box games so far this year. Instant fun!

I was rather surprised when I began playing this game. The graphics are good for a sports PS3 game, and the music is excellent. Gameplay is easy to learn, regardless of any age or skill. Lots of replay value as you can unlock different players and teams. You can also play online against people from all over the world; this was a humbling experience. It is defintely a solid street ball game for the ps3.

Very, very good!

My six-year-old son enjoyed it very much and had a lot of fun.

I've received the game OK. Everything was OK: disk, box, manual...

A week ago amazon was selling this game for $60. Now it's close to $40. I found it at Wal-mart for $30. Haven't played it yet so can't give it a real rating star-wise, but will after my son gets it for his xmas gift! Just wondering why amazon had it SO overpriced. I've noticed that lately shop around, people. Amazon is no longer the best deal on the block.

This game had so much potiential. It is fun and well worth the price I paid for it. The problem I had with it is the weapons. During the checkpoint races if you get shot by a rocket you fly 50 foot in the air. That causes you to get left behind real fast. As far as the driving goes, it is not an arcade or a simulation racer. It doesn't have a real driving feel and the handling is way to aggrevating to be an arcade. I wouldn,t pay more than $30 for this game. The games presentation does make it fun. Its no Carmageddon though!!

The vehicular combat genre seems to have dried up since the PS1 days, but its back with Blood Drive. Ignore the bad reviews, they obviously are not fans of arcade style vehicular combat. My only complaints are that the control layout is a little weird and the game is a little shallow. But thats ok for this type of game. The game makes up for it with style and great graphics. The designs for the characters, vehicles and levels are fantastic. And its fun!!!!!

Want Blood Drive Discount?

Honestly at first the game was fun, but it is extremely repetitive on single player and as of online multiplayer, not many people even play this game. Its probably because the game was not focused on the features rather than just combining Twister Metal and Dead Rising, but the game is descent. I would probably recommend this game if it was under 10$, which it was when I bought it.

This is the ultimate fighting stick and truly brings the arcade experience home. The sheer size and weight of the stick brings home the point that this is the king of all arcade stick controllers.

It is designed in collaboration with TAITO to recreate the TAITO "VEWLIX" Arcade cabinet. The stick uses authentic Sanwa stick and buttons and has other functions classic to the Real Arcade Pro. series like the turbo and the stick control toggle function. It also has a non-slip surface on the entire bottom and comes with an additional option board that you can mount the controller on to further enhance your stability.

The main feature for this controller has to be the fact that you can easily access the internal of the controller by simply unscrewing 3 screws. Maintenance and customization is a breeze to any other controllers out there.

Overall, this controller addresses all the players wants and needs and is a masterpiece of a arcade stick controller.

A must buy for any player serious for an authentic arcade experience.

GENERAL:

I purchased the stick when it was on sale here for $65 off the list price and it was worth every penny.

I've used several joysticks (Hori Fighting Stick 2, HRAP3, MadCatz SE (with full Sanwa) and TE Round 1 FightSticks) and the VLX would be my weapon of choice any day. When using it on a table the rubber bottom ensures the stick will not move. The wooden option board is a nice touch as well if you want to mount your stick to it, but I find simply placing the stick on the board works well. Note the stick does not have any protruding rubber feet to potentially interfere with lap use. Lap use may not be as comfortable compared to other sticks due to the weight (12 lbs) but you'll get used to it. In comparison the HRAP3 weighs 5.7 lbs.

LOOKS:

The VLX is the most beautiful mass produced stick I've seen yet. While most of the black parts of the stick are matte the rest provides a nice glossy contrast. The top art is a nice metallic red with some mirror accents and you really need to either see the VLX in person or watch some videos to see how light interacts with the glossy parts.

SOUND:

The sound of the joystick and buttons are much more hollow when used and that's due to the sheer physical size of the housing. Not only is this much wider than the Round 1 TE FightStick but it is taller as well. The hollow sound doesn't bother me though.

USAGE:

Let me start by mentioning one of my favorite features: the angled palm rest. I was afraid I wasn't going to like it since I've been using the Round 1 MadCatz TE Stick with the flat surface, but I was able to make an immediate adjustment to the angled palm rest and love it. Using this stick feels much more natural to me.

The joystick (JLF) and buttons (OBSF) are your typical Sanwa variety and the general consensus on them is they are high quality arcade parts that can take a beating and are great to use. If you've ever used these Sanwa parts or own any variety of a MadCatz TE stick then you'll know what they feel like: the joystick is responsive and the buttons are sensitive.

I've opened the stick to replace the L1 and L2 buttons with the included button plugs and everything inside the stick is cleanly wired and organized. I put the 2 extra buttons in the button holders found inside the stick in case any of my main 6 have issues.

The USB cable storage compartment is large enough for the 3m cable to easily fit. I placed the included cleaning cloth in the back of the storage compartment to clean the surface here and there.

Transporting the stick has been an issue due to the irregular large size and fortunately Hori released a travel bag made to fit the VLX. Unfortunately they're charging a hefty price ($39.99) and since their site is the primary store selling it the shipping cost pushes the bag close to $50. For $50 you could almost get the HRAP3!

CONCLUSION:

To me this is the king of joysticks. It reminds me of the times I spent playing SF4 in Japanese arcades. At the price point this is a joystick for enthusiasts, collectors, and those who aren't hesitant to spend. However if you get this joystick you won't regret it.

Buy Real Arcade Pro: 3 Premium VLX Now

I've played in arcades in Japan, and until now, I have yet to feel anything close to the actual feel of the arcade machines.

Then a friend recommended this to me, and now I recommend this to all of you.

This fighting stick feels like heaven in your hands. The resistance of the joystick feels loose enough to not have to put your whole body weight into moving, but not light enough to input more commands than you want to.

The buttons have the right amount of spring to them, and the layout feels very natural to play on.

It's a great feeling to have this behemoth in your hands.

CONS:

The only thing that really bothers me is how big the stick is; it's roughly almost 2 feet in length. Also, the joystick and the buttons seem rather close for how long the stick itself is.

Over-all, it's a fantastic piece of equipment.

HRAP vlx is by far one of the most sturdiest, heaviest arcade joystick I've ever played with. With the addition to the sanwa parts that come with the joystick, feels like you're really in the arcades. I've been playing fighting games with this joystick, and I usually play aggressively, therefore my motions using the stick is pretty forceful, however, no matter how much force I put in, It is still extremely sturdy and strong and doesn't move as much. This product is definitely recomended if you're a die hard arcade fan and want the full experience of being in the arcades at your home.

The only thing that I see as something to look out for is that when pressing the buttons, it does feel slightly hollow compared with the MadCatz tournament edition fightstick. I believe it is because the box itself has a lot of space inside and the top is slightly thin. Yet this feel is really subjective, I personally don't mind it. Especially when Im focusing on beating the bosses, I don't even really notice it while i'm furiously trying to win a game. The price is pretty expensive too. All in all this is a great joystick and I do recommend this product for those die hard arcade gamers!

man, pretty much what all other reviewers said about this stick is all true. it feels like i'm playing with silk. sooooo goood!

and that just made my disappointment THAT much worse when i came to find out that sony has yet to (and probably never will) release updates to get it to function with ps2 backwards compatibility. i have a ridiculous library of ps2 fighters, and that was one of the deciding factors on getting this stick.....

again. THIS STICK WILL NOT WORK WITH THE PS2 PORTION OF BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE PS3'S.

on the other hand, it DOES work wonderfully with everything else! playstation 1 games running on ps3 ARE compatible and play amazingly with it. and you can usb it into a pc and most things run fine with no other software involved (at least on win 7)!!!

the few problems i had (specifically with "super street fighter 4 ae") were all solved by using "x360ce"(search google. its easier than it looks to use it). any other issues are solved with "joy2key".

i went into this purchase expecting that people over-exaggerated how good it is. they weren't. they were under-exaggerating. within five minutes, i actually knew i was better at fighters than i had ever been before. what you attempt to input into this thing generally is what gets read by it. wanna do 90 dragon punches in a row in your sleep (on your first try, when you used to have trouble pulling even ONE off in the heat of the moment before)? no problem!!! i would compare "coming off a Mad Catz Street Fighter IV FightStick into THIS CONTROLLER" to "selling your old run down station wagon and getting a brand new sports car".

as sad/mad as i was that i couldn't play my ps2 fighters(and i was REALLY mad), after using it, i almost could care less. this controller is mad expensive, but if you can afford it (and don't care/are willing to overlook the lack of ps2 compatibility), then it's more than worth it! the fact i have no choice but to give it a perfect review even though it lacked an important (to me) feature should definitely say something about the product (and in hori's defense, sony is entirely responsible for the lack of functionality.)

(yes, i'm sure a custom made stick is probably better, but this might as well be one. and heck, it seems so easy to mod and repair, if you dislike something you can just change it!)

The Genesis was my first video game system growing up. It is a great system with a wonderful library, so therefore anything that plays its games is bound to be at least okay. The GenMobile is, by this logic, an all right purchase. Unfortunately it is far from perfect.

First the good it's cheap by video game system standards, and comes with 20 games built right in. They vary in quality from great (Sonic and Knuckles) to good (DecapAttack, Columns III, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine) to average (Crack Down) to painful (Jewel Master). It's a mixed bag, but there's a decent amount of variety. It can also play Genesis cartridges via a cartridge slot, allowing you to play gems like Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Streets of Rage 2.

Now the bad. This thing was designed very poorly. The button layout is awkward and the reset button is uncomfortably close to the D-Pad. Due to some missing parts possessed by the actual Genesis system, some cartridges won't work, including Ms. Pac-Man and Super Street Fighter 2: The New Challengers. Toy Story works but freezes when you reach the first-person stage halfway through. Sound quality is inexcusably poor. It's all very unfortunate.

But when it comes down to it, this thing is still a decent purchase if you absolutely must play Genesis on the go. I would however recommend buying a plug-to-your-TV Genesis system, however, and I don't mean one of these new "clone" systems, because they have the same problems as the GenMobile. I'm talking about a real, vintage, 1990s Genesis system. Get one of those bad boys and some of my recommended games and you'll experience gaming nirvana in no time.

RECOMMENDED GENESIS GAMES

-Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2, 3, and Knuckles

-Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine

-DecapAttack

-Contra: Hard Corps

-VectorMan

-Streets of Rage 2

-Castlevania Bloodlines

-Super Street Fighter 2

IMPORTANT UPDATE: My GenMobile has gone dead on me. It was owned for less than a year, played only occasionally, and treated like a king. I will not and cannot endorse this pathetic, shoddy worksmanship when my ACTUAL Sega Genesis which I have owned for over a DECADE is still working while this thing decided it couldn't take the heat. I have docked this piece of junk two stars for this insolence. NO LONGER EVEN SLIGHTLY RECOMMENDED! GET THE ORIGINAL PRODUCT!

I own the Retrogen, GenMobile, and the Nomad and they all have their strengths and weaknesses.

I suspect the Retrogen and GenMobile were made in the same factories because they have the same compatibility with games, same sound issues, same build quality, and same "Firecore" menu.

Compatibility Winner: Nomad

The Nomad has actual Genesis hardware inside, while the Retrogen and GenMobile use emulation. I've run across a few games that don't work at all on the Retrogen and GenMobile (such as Super Street Fighter 2). The Nomad on the other hand will play any game, even Virtua Racing. The Nomad uses the same video and power cable as the model 2 Genesis and has a controller port that accepts any Genesis controller for player 2. The Retrogen and GenMobile don't even have a controller port, making them 1 player only systems. They will play most Genesis games, but you might run into 1 or 2 that don't work.

Screen Winner: draw

The Nomad has the biggest screen but being technology from the mid-90's, it is very hard to see. The Retrogen's screen is smaller than the Nomad's, but it's a huge improvement in clarity. It's not perfect, as there is a slight green tint (very noticeable on blacks and yellows) and the viewing angle is not as good as the GenMobile. The GenMobile has an even smaller screen than the Retrogen, but it is brighter and has a wider viewing angle. It depends if you want a bigger screen or more brightness.

Sound Winner: Nomad

Games sound as they should be on the Nomad, where as on the Retrogen and GenMobile they are off pitch. Streets of Rage 2 just sounds awful on the Retrogen and GenMobile. The Retrogen and GenMobile also only output mono sound.

Controls Winner: Nomad

The dpad and buttons on the Nomad are excellent. On the Retrogen and GenMobile the dpads don't pivot and can be pressed in the center, which is annoying. The GenMobile's dpad is actually made up of 2 separate pieces split diagonally. The buttons are ok. The dpads are the main problem. This is not a huge deal unless you are playing fighting games where precise movements are required.

Battery Winner: Retrogen and GenMobile

The Nomad takes AA batteries and drains them in no time. The Retrogen and GenMobile have built-in rechargeable batteries which lasts much longer. The Retrogen comes with a charging cable that ends in a usb plug, which you can charge in any computer or device with a usb port. The GenMobile comes with a wall adapter that you plug into any wall outlet. They both have the same mini-usb port, so you can use the wall adapter on the Retrogen or usb cable on the GenMobile. The downside is that if and when the rechargeable batteries die, you won't be able to replace them.

Portability Winner: Retrogen and GenMobile

The Nomad is very big and heavy, while the Retrogen and GenMobile are a fraction of the size and weight. The Retrogen and GenMobile are very lightweight. They do have a cheapish feel.

Built-in Games Winner: GenMobile

The Nomad doesn't have any built-in games. The Retrogen has 20 built-in homebrew games, which are very boring and you'll only play them once before getting tired of them. The GenMobile has 20 actual Genesis games built-in, which are much better.

Also, the GenMobile is licensed by Sega and has the Sega Genesis logos on the box (as well as a sticker on the unit, which can come off easily). The Retrogen is not licensed. You also get a wrist strap with the GenMobile. The GenMobile even has a better box than the Retrogen (it has magnets to hold the box closed instead of velcro).

Overall, the Retrogen feels like an older version of the GenMobile.

The GenMobile is a decent alternative to the Nomad, but you have to sacrifice a bit of sound/compatibility/controls for portability/battery life/screen quality.

Buy Officially Licensed Sega Genesis Gen Mobile Portable System Now

I bought this handheld because I wanted to play my old Genesis games again, it plays every Genesis game I own. It comes with a charger and holds up to 8 hrs and it has 20 official Genesis games built in. You can even plug in the A/V plug to a television, I haven't tested this yet though. The sound on it is pretty good, its only one speaker so don't expect a Dolby sound system. The d-pad is pretty nice for most games except for Street Fighter 2 and other fighting games, the buttons are also awkward for fighters, but its not a problem if you don't play them. I recommend this system for anyone who misses their old Genesis games and the most important part, you can play it on the go!

Pro: -plays Genesis games on the go!

-20 official Genesis games built in

-extra cartridge slot

-smaller than a Sega Nomad & Gear Gear (it fits in your pocket)

-long battery life and rechargeable

Cons: -button layout is strange

-D pad is not desired for fighters, should of been like a Sega Genesis D-pad

The Genmoble includes 20 games built in:

Alien Storm

Altered Beast

Sonic Spinball

Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle

Arrow Flash

Kid Chameleon

Decap Attack

Crack Down (1989)

First off, I'd like to let the viewers know that I have 3 Game Gears. If one can find a Game Gear for under 20 dollars with working sound, you are very fortunate. Game Gears have 8 bit graphics, and the picture quality fades quickly. Game Gears also aren't very portable. In addition to the crappy blurry picture of the Game Gear, the games cost money. You can find some on Amazon for 1 penny, although you have to pay 4 dollars for shipping. I bought 7 games this way, and most cost more than a penny.

Where was this little gem the whole time? 16 bit graphics and 20 games built-in, and BRAND SPANKING NEW! This sounds stupid, but I feel special owning this. The games are fair to good, while some like Golden Axe, Shinobi III and Shadow Dancer are great. I secretly love Sonic Spinball also. shh! Yeah, the sound really is average to poor, but the gameplay is incredible. I can guarantee you that if you buy this system, you will play it for at least 3 to 4 hours on arrival. You'll also forget about the subpar sound quickly, as I did. I just turned down the volume, and really became involved.

An alternative would be to purchase a PSP and the Sega Genesis Collection which includes almost the same exact games. It's really an issue of finances for some when it comes down to it. (To add: One major advantage with GenMobile is nonexistent load times)

I'd also like to give 2 thumbs up to Classic Game Source Inc. I ordered this product, but without the 20 games (don't recommend) at first, and asked them to cancel it. They canceled the order immediately without sending it. I reordered this, and received the RetroGen with the 20 games in 2 days.

update December 2010I now have 3 Retrogens and they are used on a regular (Monday through Friday) basis by kids. All 3 still work fine. Usually if something seems wrong, plug it in with the included charger, and everything works perfect again. Peace, Lou

3 year update 11/12: This little system is so impressive. I bought 3 of these which get regular use, and all 3 still work.

Well, I was pretty excited to see this. I didn't think that anything like this even exsisted. At Fifty dollars, who could say no! Well, let me tell you. Its not a TERRIBLE deal, but mine is already broken. I havent even had the thing a month. BECAREFUL when loading the cartridges into the slot, thats how mine quit. It wont turn on.

Once again, not a TERRIBLE deal, but only if you have fifty bucks to blow and caring hands.

Cool Features:

Plugs into television slot via AUX cables.

Doesnt require batteries, rechargable included.

Its something INNOVATIVE!

Good Battery Life.

Poor Features:

Too small.

Feels cheap.

Screen is too small.

All in all, I'd have to say....in the end...its probably not worth the money. Save a coulple bucks and buy a used Genesis Console.

These skins look cool, but after a week, one had to completely be removed for it didn't stick anymore.

The others are pealing around the edges, and they seem to "get in the way" of playing the game. Not very impressed at all with these. It's a great idea, but sure is not what I had in mind when ordering. They were very expensive temporary stickers.

While it may make environmental sense, it's makes it diffictult to wrap and give as a gift. Wish there would have been more info about this in the description as I now have to eat $7 on return shipping.

Hyperdimension Neptunia is one of those games that I have somewhat mixed feelings about. On one hand, it's got a very clever setting and characters. On the other hand, it's got a lot of reused features from other Idea Factory/Compile Heart games (especially Trinity Universe). It's a game with superb 2D art, and rather mediocre 3D graphics. It's a game that I can't honestly say is a great *game*, but was nevertheless enjoyable enough (read: addicting enough) for me to play through twice and hunt after the game's platinum trophy (which is unusual for me, Neptunia makes only my 2nd platinum).

So what is Hyperdimension Neptunia? It's a turn-based RPG based on console wars. Specifically, each of the current major consoles (+ Sega Neptune) is personified as a Goddess, and each of the Goddesses rules over one of the landmasses in the world -Planeptune, Lastation, Leanbox, and Lowee. And the main antagonist of the game is based on game piracy. Party members -Compa, IF, Nisa*, and Gust* -are the personifications of real life game developers Compile Heart, Idea Factory, Nippon Ichi Software, and Gust. And you can summon old Sega characters during battle. And the world is called Gamindustri. (*Note that Nisa and Gust are both in the game regardless, but aren't *playable* party members unless you buy the DLC. Not a necessary purchase to beat the game, but if you like Prinnies, Nisa may be worth the purchase just so you can check out her Prinny backpack :P)

I'm not making this up. The game really is this ridiculous. But that's honestly part of it's charm. The game is very much a satire of the video game industry itself and those who have familiarity with the industry will find quite a bit to chuckle and laugh at during the game. Final Fantasy references? Check. Gears of War? Check. Mario brothers? Check. Pokemon? Check. Sonic the Hedgehog? Check. Red Ring of Death? Check.

What I found to be particularly outstanding with Neptunia is the localization done by NIS America. While I can't vouch for the accuracy of the translation since I don't speak/read Japanese, I can say that the dialogue in the game just feels spot on. The voice acting in particular I found to be exceptionally good, in large part because the voice actors never quite take themselves too seriously. In a more serious game, this would be a major flaw as it would feel jarring and take us out of the game world, but in Neptunia, this kind of voice acting actually supports the written dialogue and feels much more natural for these characters. It takes a special kind of voice acting to succeed when the characters are actively referencing "party members", "experience points", and "level ups", and Neptunia nails it perfectly. Call me crazy, but I think this is some of the best voice acting for a game I've seen in a long time. In particular, Neptune and Compa have outstanding voice acting in this game, special kudos to their respective voice actresses.

As you've probably figured, there's quite a bit I found to enjoy in Neptunia. But unfortunately, there's a fair share of problems in the game as well, some of which are more forgiveable than others. So let's go through them:

1.) GRAPHICS -for me, this actually isn't a problem, but it might be a concern for some people. Like I mentioned before, the 2D animation in the game is really quite good; the moving, breathing portraits from Trinity Universe return once again and the character portraits look quite nice. The 3D on the other hand is somewhat lacking; we're looking at somewhere between PS2 and low-tier PS3 graphics (again, it is comparable to Trinity Universe).

2.) GAMEPLAY -the basic gameplay uses an AP system -you get a certain number of action points per turn and can use them to perform different types of attacks. There's actually a fair amount of depth here -you can make your own combos in the menu before battle, then you can use combo links, switching between front and back characters, transformation into Goddess mode, elemental attacks, physical/magic attacks, etc. The main problem is that most of the time, there's not really a whole lot of strategy. Once you find a good approach, you can more or less spam that sequence of actions for the rest of the game. A little bit of strategy does come into play during more difficult fights though, as you can choose to Defend rather than use all of your AP -the amount of damage reduced is based on how much AP you had left when you defended. This becomes particularly important...

3.) ...here: HEALING -the healing system is pretty unique. Throughout the game, you can collect different colored potions to utilize during battle. From within the menus, you set up "Item Skills" -skills that trigger with a % chance given certain conditions and use up a fixed number of these potions. You can choose to set up these skills however you want -distributing more points into one improves the % chance of it occuring. Using these skills are the ONLY way to heal during dungeons. And these can ONLY be done DURING a battle. Not after a battle. And that makes this both good and bad. On one hand, it does add a bit of extra strategy, as you may need to be a little more clever about how you defend. On the other hand, it does get incredibly frustrating to beat a fight with a little health left only to die against the next enemy because you couldn't heal.

4.) TRINITY UNIVERSE LITE -this game is pretty similar to Trinity Universe. They're both turn-based, AP-based RPGs with silly stories; they use the same style of portraits and cutscenes; they even share a number of enemy models and dungeon interiors. And while Neptunia has some new gameplay features that I think have the potential to be interesting, they definitely need to be fine tuned some more. What's more, Trinity Universe seemed to have a better, more complex battle system -Neptunia's does seem simpler; additionally, Trinity Universe definitely has more content. So if you want something different, this may not be the best of games to pick.

And yet despite all of this, I love this game. I'm eagerly hoping for NIS America to localize the recently announced Neptunia Mk. 2 (coming to Japan this August, so we'll probably see it sometime next year). The gameplay for Neptunia does admittedly need work, and as I said before, it may not be a great game in the strictest definition of the word, but it is fun. I definitely don't regret purchasing this game, and if NISA localizes the 2nd game, I'll be buying that on day 1 for sure. "I choose you, Compiffytune!" :D

Runaway favorite for "game with the strangest name" for 2011, Hyperdimension Neptuina is sequel-in-spirit to 2010's Trinity Universe, with the same combat and exploration systems. We do have plenty of differences, though...

First thing most will notice is the unusual setting-literally called Gamindustri, during a troubled time in its history, The Console Wars. Yes, really. Accordingly, different continents are all wordplay relating to the current generation of consoles. There are a lot of overall concepts and ongoing themes through the game like this, where there's no real impact on the game itself, but fans of series or persons that know some video game history will get a bit more out of it. Really, I have to give credit for piecing the game world up this way, as being something never really attempted before. Boldness often leads to good things!

Another quirk you'll spot quickly is that all the protagonist party characters are named after the studios and development companies involved in the game's creation. Again, extremely cute, extremely silly. For added irony, the group plays itself out to be a stereotypical RPG adventuring group, completely ignoring the so-called Fourth Wall in games. Logic such as "once you join the party you can never leave" and "I bet that NPC has lower stats than me so let's beat her up" apply. Constant references to all things gaming: culture, stereotypes, common expressions, "blogs" written by higher-up villains, and tons more. It's more than any one person could spot on their own.

Right, so the setting is unlike anything really seen before, has undeniable humor and charm, and gives a pretty open slate. What about the actual gameplay, you ask? This is where things take a tumble. How much of a tumble really depends on what experience you're looking for. This game is in no way developed with the "serious gamer" in mind. One could enjoy it, but more for completion purposes than soaking in the game experience. It's extremely lighthearted, with a non-linear relaxed pace, generally slow combat speed and relatively low difficulty. Combat is based on setting up skill combinations, though it must be done manually from a menu and adjusted often as you learn more abilities. Still with me? Read on.

With the slower battle pace, things can get extremely boring. Well, either boring or time consuming, or both. Sure, you can perform a flashy attack and combo, if you don't mind some attack animations in the 10+ second range, and mostly repeat. In the end, it's by far easiest and most effective to repeatedly use a character's strongest attack, which results in near button-mashing to get through a fight. There is one work-around on the time consumption; pressing L2 will skip the current animation and greatly speed up battles, though its liberal use merely means even more continuous button-mashing, and you'll see no action at all even in a big fight.

There's just a layer of depth that's missing to add true variety. One common activity is a dungeon "time attack" to perform a certain task, and though that sounds simple enough, liberal use of L2 is basically required for a good score; The game rather contradicting itself. I'll again emphasize that for the most casual player all of the above is not the worst thing.

Standard RPG item use system for cures and the like? Does not exist, and very frustrating. ALL forms of curing or recovery are performed via certain "item skill" triggers that the player sets up a percentage chance of a character using if conditions are met. Simplest being to set "use cure item at 50% HP", akin to Final Fantasy XII's gambit system, but you're limited on allocation points such that it's often not possible to resurrect someone, or you just have a random chance to, or can only perform this at higher levels. In defense, with the relatively low difficulty this might not feel particularly vital, but it's still quite annoying.

I'd like to comment again on the target audience, with the game presented. On one side, one might make the point that it's but 'fanservice' to the usual audience with its 100% all-female cast. However, I'd far more make the case that the game is an attempt to attract the more casual gamer and women as players. Although one might assume an all-female cast would be a field day for "normal" RPG shenanigans of animations and pictures, at no point is sex appeal really pushed to get a reaction from the player. Quite the opposite-the characters are dressed very moderately and have extremely "normal" appearances (for an RPG) for the most part. Though I give high marks for the efforts in this area, I feel that the game on the whole suffered a bit in trying to find a balance that would try to please everyone.

Still, it is good fun, and good laughs. The story is pretty shallow, but as it's driven mostly by humor and RPG stereotypes it hardly matters. Graphics are a bit garbled, but it has no effect on the game itself. Fans of other games in the ongoing Gust/NIS/Idea Factory/Compile Heart series of games will likely be content to play Neptunia assuming they walk in with fairly low expectations, and I'll be bold to say that those that are curious about the genre might pick this as a place to jump in because of the attempted accessibility. It's rare for me on a 3-of-5 review, but I've got to say that because of the slower pace and humor, this could be a good chance for new players to hop into the genre.

I'll try to sum this game up in a sentence: This is an ultra-flashy, fully professionally voice acted (Cristina Vee is even in this in a major role!), tongue-in-cheek manga-style RPG crammed full of lolis and fanservice, along with a storyline which is a metaphor for the current-gen console wars that is designed to be humorous, and it succeeds, and every main character knows they're part of a video game. If that sounds good to you, then you will love this game, because there is nothing so bad as to be deal-breaking if that sounds appealing to you.

It's funny, the combat is great and incredibly over-the-top flashy, written with beautiful grace and excellent humor, and there's nothing particularly wrong with it, and tons to like. They don't make a lot of games like this, and it's a real treat to take it all in. It's rare we'd get something like this in the States, so it's a blessing that it's here, and it's been treated and localized wonderfully. I have no problems whatsoever with the ever-talented NIS treatment of it.

There are a few problems that should be noted, in case these happen to be total deal-breakers for you in anything. One, battles are, unfortunately, random. No visible enemies here; you get random encounters. On the bright side, dungeons are extremely short, often under ten minutes long, so this isn't too bad a problem. Still, it does mean you'll have to fight monsters that are pointless to fight once in a while, and who you'll blow away easily. Also, there's a skip button for any given attack in battle, which will make combat fly by. Another thing worth noting is that the main story tends to preamble before getting into the real thing. There's a lengthy sequence between Neptune and two other characters who you will not use later on. Still, this section is not boring, and both characters have character (one is voiced by the always-entertaining Cristina Vee) and their own brand of humor to go along with all of it. This may not bother you at all, since in the end, this is a game that's supposed to be humorous above all else, so the fact that you spend a good chunk of time with two fairly useless characters might not bother you. IF and Compa, your companions for a while, are funny and entertaining, and voiced by talented actresses. They are by no means throwaways, but they are definitely outclassed by the major characters that will join your party later on, since neither IF nor Compa has any transformation or super mode of any kind, making them kind of pointless. Neptune, the main character, will completely dominate the battlefield while these characters are in your party (even moreso if you snag the DLC, and battles become laughably easy once you learn Neptune Break, your first major skill that is given a massive power boost if done while transformed).

One thing worth mentioning is that the healing/item system in this game is excellently done. In most RPGs, you heal your characters with a spell and waste a turn doing so, only to have them get damaged just as much again, forcing you to repeat the process. Healing and buff spells work differently in this game, in that they are automatically triggered under certain conditions; for instance, having under 50% HP might trigger the use of an item that heals your character. These are called "item skills", because you aren't actually using items so much as you're using materials. There are only a few types of "essences" that make up items. When you gain an item skill, you can use those essences to trigger effects. For instance, one might cost 5-25-25-5, that much of each respective essence (just as a random example). When these are triggered, you do not lose your turn, and will even happen when it is not your turn so you heal instantly, should it be triggered. I found this to be an excellent system, as it removed the need to use buff or healing spells yourself, instead making it an automated process you customize yourself. Keep in mind, this game has no form of SP, MP, or anything of the sort. There is only HP and AP, the latter determining how much you are allowed to do per turn. AP is not used during healing or buffing, only during attacking.

The bottom line is that this game is a Godsend for me. It's hilarious, the characters are designed with individual character, the voice acting is excellent, and the battle mechanics and game world all work as they should, and in some ways even better, as the automated healing is a beautiful touch. I enjoy the hell out of this game, and if you believe the premise is interesting, chances are, you'll feel the same.

I have been pretty critical of the download of RPGs published by NIS, which has ranged from merely mediocre (Atelier Rorona, Trinity Universe) to downright stinky (Cross Edge, Last Rebellion). For PS2, NIS was one of my favorite publishers, bringing great games like Disgaea and Phantom Brave. But this generation? Well, I liked Disgaea 3, at least.

However, I respect the tactic. Clearly, the JRPG is a forgotten genre on the PS3, with big budget titles like Final Fantasy XIII disappointing, and smaller titles being wooed to Microsoft. NIS sees a hole in the industry, and they have capitalized. I have no doubt that this quantity of time-wasters has been profitable for them, and it has certainly been a boon to the fanboys of these games, so while I often haven't been impressed in the least, I can't fault their spirit or business acumen.

However, finally, I have found a game that I have enjoyed from beginning to platinum-end. No, it's not a perfect game, but it's fun and relaxing. "Hyperdimension Neptunia" is the first title that has made me want to continue playing beyond one or two hours at a time. It tells a good story. It has a simplistic but satisfactory battle system. The aesthetic is generally agreeable. What more could I ask from a budget title (I picked this up for thirty bucks at a rival competitor).

THE GOOD:

Story I really like the story in this game. It's not fall-over funny, but the idea of game consoles being protected by busty goddesses fighting a war is just too good to pass up. However, more than the main theme of the story, I like its development. During conversations, numerous game references are dropped. It's fun to try to guess what game they are referencing before you're told. I could do with less talk about boobs, or diarrhea, but all in all, I enjoyed the trip as much as the destination.

Battle A lot of people have complained about battle in this one. I am not going to be one of them. I like the simplified battle of Hyperdimension Neptunia. The battles boil down to button mashing (which gets a little old, I'll grant), where particular button configurations set off pre-set combos to attack the enemy. Battle is generally very easy (more so, since you can essentially attack AND defend at the same time), but it's not unsatisfying. Moreover, THERE IS NO GRINDING! Most of your leveling will come from defeating bosses or "special" enemies (AKA Cliones). You can fight regular battles if you want, to the tune of a few thousand experience points (even at high levels), or you can fight a single Clione for...2,000,000 experience points! I can't tell you how satisfying it is to play a JRPG that doesn't rely on hours of nonsensical grinding.

Trophies Finally, a JRPG that gets it right! Most trophies are based on the story. They take time, but you want to get all of the content out of the game, right? Of the three or so that require particular actions, they are embarrassing, but mostly easy. I hate that there is a trophy that rewards you for incompetence (you have to revive a dead party member 20 times, e.g.). But generally, your trophies require you to see certain events in the story. It's certainly much better than getting 900 battle trophies in Star Ocean.

Be warned there are missable trophies, which is always an annoyance.

THE BAD:

No Overworld this game screams for an overworld. I know that such things are out of vogue now, but in a game that wishes to explain the difference between multiple planets (each related to a particular console), it would be much nicer to actually move through the world, rather than getting a single, mostly-still image of the world. I can't really tell the difference between Leanbox (supposedly a medieval world) and Lowee (supposedly a fantasy world). I could if I was actually traveling through the world.

Repetitive Dungeons For the huge number of dungeons you will face throughout the course of this game, you'd think they'd make the templates marginally interesting. Nope these are reminiscent of those dungeons from early 1st Person RPGs. Long tunnels which move only N-S or E-W. Boring, boring, boring. Thankfully, they are mostly short.

Repetitive Monsters I like that there is a huge number of monsters in this game...sort of. The problem is, there are really only about 10 monsters, each with 10 palette swaps. What's worse is that you have a bestiary, but it doesn't even bother to describe the monster. Some monsters with different names actually have the exact same look. Come on you could have done better. Or at least, could you have put the Bestiary in alphabetical order?

But anyway, I'm nitpicking. I actually think this game is a step above some of the other dreck that NIS has given us. It must have done marginally well it's getting a sequel, after all. If you like this sort of game, I think you'll like this one. That's the first time I've said this in a while.

This game is a excellent choice for those people who enjoy and have the patience to level up and unlock things Slowly. My thought is that this game is great. I love Story line and it has great animation. if you are wondering if you should buy this game i recommend you do. But this game isn't a RPG game like Skyrim. It has a third person view (which is fine with me and is normal) and you can set the language they speak to Japanese or English. The sub text is always English but for those who are buying this and only know how to read japanese (of course i think there is a japanese version of this game..) can set it to japanese but the sub title will not change. The game is a story line where you pick up more comrades to defeat monsters. To be honest im not sure if this is a game a 25 year old person would enjoy.. The graphics are nice no bugs for me. I have had no freezes are memory deletion. Overall This Game is Excellent. (for me) And if you are thinking of buying this its totally worth it.
