We purchased Rio several months ago. Our wii was acting up so I wanted a multiplayer game for the ps3. My kids age 8,7, and 5 really love this game. It's a series of minigames a along with quizzes if you turn them on. Their are enough games that I don't feel like I'm playing the same one every time that I play.

This game is enough fun that my husband and I stayed up with our friends until 2am playing without the kids! It really is fun for the whole family!

Some games (like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Phineas & Ferb 2nd Dimension) do a great job of capturing the essence of the movies/shows and make for a really fun game to play through.

Rio possesses some of those elements, but after you've went through the 100 or so minigames, which can be played in a lot of different modes (Party, Story, Quiz, etc.) there isn't really anything else to do save to try for the various trophies. The graphics are very good, controls are simplistic enough, and the cutscenes (during the storyline) are right out of the movie.

Obviously if your kids loved the movie and are satisfied with the minigame setup, this will hold their attention for a few weeks or so. Otherwise, I definitely would not purchase this game. There is simply not enough replay value for the price ($42 on Amazon at the time of this review) to justify.

I have long been searching for PS3 games that can be played by the whole family. I have 2 kids, aged 6 and 4. I got them Toy Story 3 for Christmas and they loved it. But it gets boring after a while. The Rio game, on the other hand have mini games and you could choose the games yourself (or pick Random if you wish). Graphics is pretty impressive! I love how the birds rejoice when they win. When we have guests come over, we also play this game. Both adults and kids enjoy this game.

I agree with the other commenter. I wish they made more games like this.

The title for my review seems to be about the best way to describe this game. It's considered an RPG, but it's more of a sandbox game in my opinion. That being said, it was the first and only RPG I have played and I absolutely loved it. If you haven't played Oblivion and you're thinking about buying it for PS3, wait a month or two. Bethseda is releasing a "Game of the Year" edition that will contain all of the expansion packs for Oblivion (Knights of the Nine, which is included in this reviewed PS3 version, Shivering Isles (not included in current PS3 version), and I believe there's more). Positive and Negative breakdown, shall we?

Positives:

Fantastic graphics

large world to roam about, lots to explore and discover

Story lines are immersive

No lack of tasks to complete (game guide is some 400 pages)

character leveling provides incentive to practice skills, you also find better weapons, armor and magical abilities the higher your character levels.

ability to craft your own magic spells, enchanted weapons and armor, make potions

Negatives:

Some of the dungeon and cave crawling gets repetitive, especially the Gates of Oblivion

Enemies level with your character. While it keeps the game challenging, part of the joy of levelling is becoming more powerful. With enemies that level with your character, you never really become "God-like" as the enemies become more powerful as you do.

Really, there isn't a lot not to like. the game is at least 200 hours long, with all of the side quests and such outside the main story line. The Dark brotherhood quests, especially, are very fun quests. I highly recommend this game, but like I said earlier, wait for the Game of the Year edition if you plan to buy.

I played the 'Game of the Year' edition on our PS3 and, before ordering the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: Game of the Year Edition I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend the $50+ for the full thing or maybe start with this, less expensive, configuration and then add the Shivering Isles to it. It was a difficult decision to make because there wasn't enough information available at the time or I could not find it and, in the end, I decided to live dangerously :) and went for the GOTY. Now, that the happy Oblivion-playing days are behind me, I believe that it was the right thing to do but I would like to help, if I can, anyone who may not be so sure of what to order, make the right decision.

What you get in this edition:

-------------------------------

This edition has the plain-vanilla 'Oblivion' AND a relatively small expansion called 'Knights of the Nine' which was available separately on other platforms.

Knights of the Nine integrates seamlessly into the Oblivion universe and it's really a set of additional quests, all taking place inside the 'original' Oblivion universe.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Shivering Isles:

-------------------------------

Is part of GOTY but it is not included in this package. In the PS3 world, this represents the difference between the plain Oblivion and the GOTY.

The Shivering Isles are a different realm. The world's texture is different, the characters behave in a different manner, you encounter different monsters and you travel on the path of a different story line. While you can take you weapons and your skills with you, the Shivering Isles is a world onto itself and you go in and out of it through a gateway so you are either in Cyrodiil or you are in the Shivering Isles.

If you are thinking in terms of 'is it worth it?', you should be aware that the Shivering Isles does not double your universe. It is a relatively small world and it has a smaller number of quests. My estimation is that it's probably 1/5 the size of Cyrodiil proper, possibly smaller. In my view, purchasing the GOTY edition was worth it and I have little doubt that, once I was almost done with the main Oblivion I would have ordered the Shivering Isles, regardless of the price but, for anyone who's more cautious, there seems to be no price penalty for purchasing them as separate packages. However, given the convenience of having everything on one disk and given the likelihood that, if you love Oblivion you would buy the Shivering Isles anyway, I would recommend the GOTY.

See my GOTY review below.

_________________________________________________

Oblivion is EXACTLY how I imagined an RPG should be like back in the 80's, while playing Ultimas on Commodore 64s and Atari STs.

Oblivion has weather. While there is no wind other than a constant, gentle breeze, you do get rain/thunderstorms, fog, snow (no blizzards though, because there's not much wind). You don't slip and fall on ice but the sound of your steps is different whether you walk on the road, on grass, on snow or on ice.

The world of Cyrodill is not exactly continent-size, maybe some 20-30 miles in any direction from downtown Imperial City but... what a world this is. Cities, settlements, camps, estates, roadside inns, ruins, caves, dungeons, mines, shrines. The landscape is made up of plains, hard-to-climb mountains, rivers, swamps, waterfalls, seas. You can travel on foot or you can ride a horse. You can fight your way into fame and fortune while doing good or you can sneak into other people's houses or pickpocket the unsuspecting. The guards will chase you and throw you in jail if you do illegal things but, if they like you enough, maybe they will look the other way sometimes. Powerful gods or humble people will ask you do 'little things' for them and, if you can make them happy, they will reward you according to their abilities. You can raise to the top of your profession, as a fighter, as a mage, as a thief or as an assassin or you can assemble your own little gang of dreamy crusaders so that you can fight evil and recover the relics of a legendary knight. Or you can do them all and become all, in sequence or make progress in all paths more or less simultaneously while moonlighting as a gladiator as well and, if still bored, how about helping a lady take care of the rats in her basement (that's NOT what you think) or some drunk guy at the inn get rid of the Trolls that took over his daddy's country estate? Oh and, I forgot, there's a world to save or... wait... there's TWO worlds, thanks to the Shivering Isles extension.

This game is so huge, I can't see how you could really 'finish' it. After more than 2 months of almost daily playing, I am maybe 75-80% into the main quest, half a way through the Knights of the Nine, only started the Shivering Isles adventures. I did become the realm's Chief Mage (and the titles earns me no respect from the scholar mages) and the grand master at the Fighters league, got myself 350,000 gold coins in my pocket, 2 comfortable houses and 2 nice offices, completed close to 100 quests, slaughtered 2000 creatures and hundreds of humans, murdered 4 or 5 and all but one by mistake (friendly fire), didn't even come close to the Thieves guild and, foolishly, made it impossible for me to ever join the Dark Brotherhood (these are the assassins). Also, I've never been a vampire and didn't yet start my career as a professional gladiator. I did massacre the peaceful dwellers of a small village but I did that under the influence of some drugs that made them look to me like bloody Orcs that was the price to pay for infiltrating and destroying the source of that scourge. Oh, and while briefly in the land of Dementia or was it Mania? I did, willingly, push buttons that caused a few careless adventurers to go insane and I watched as they were becoming so. I humiliated a lovely princess or was it a duchess? and I killed so many fearsome monsters, I lost count myself but the game does keep a count so it's easy to know. In fact, the game keeps track of so many things... I could easily find out how many jokes I told, how many potions I made, how many horses I've stolen (one), how many hours I slept or how many books I read.

Well...? What do you think?

On the 'not so good' side, the game does slow down when you are fighting 4-5 monsters at the same time or when there are other things that keep the PS3 busy while you are fighting the baddies like a fire burning. Loading/saving times are a bit too long but, while this is happening, you do get to read some randomly selected good advice on the screen.

The other thing that saddens me is that I don't believe the good people at Bethesda are working on the next chapter yet. I do hope that, as soon as they are done with Fallout-3, they are going to get busy with another adventure in Cyrodill or thereabouts.

My other problem is that I am now fighting with my kids over time on the PS3. We have a bunch of other games but, since Oblivion came into our house, I would say that 95%+ of our PS3 time was on Oblivion.

I've never been much for the medieval adventure genre of video games but this game is really quite amazing. The world is so rich and detailed. It doesn't have the scripted feel that many games do. You can explore just about anything anywhere and it seems like there are nearly countless little discoveries that you wouldn't know existed if you didn't decide to just wander off the path.

Excellent Game!

Well, I have owned Oblivion since it came out for the Xbox 360. For any RPG fan, this game cannot be beat. The depth of game play, the level of detail, and of course the fun factor. The proof is in the pricing. It has been one year and most still sell Oblivion for the 360 at close to the same price as when it was released. Very few games can accomplish that.

I am a long-time Microsoft fan. I find most PS3 games ok, but nothing spectacular nor any better than any comparable game on the 360. Graphically though for Oblivion on the PS3, I must honestly admit it looks a lot more crisp, clearer, and brighter. I am still using the same TV and using component cables for both systems. On the 360 with my TV, I found myself needing to increase the brightness all the time just to see certain areas well enough even with a torch lit. It is perfect on the PS3 without any adjustments.

Load times are faster overall. You still wait here and there, but not nearly as long as on the 360. It is missing many of the downloads you could get on the 360 for a small fee. A couple of those I really miss. I still think the Xbox 360 controllers are much better to use than the Sony ones, so that is one flaw I do not like dealing with.

So yes, same game on a different system and I bought it again. This game has entertained me for hundreds of hours and hopefully even hundreds more. If you have not played it, there are many characters to choose from and during the game, you can of course choose a heroic path to an insanely evil path. You just have to be good enough not to get caught when being evil.

Now maybe if they did it on the Wii with that remote, that would be interesting.

For those of you that don't own or haven't played Elder Scrolls Oblivion for the PC or 360...Oblivion is an RPG adventure (Role-Playing Game) that focuses on a gigantic fantasy world know as Cyrodiil. The game allows you, the player, to progress your character in anyway you choose or could possibly imagine, in order to save the world from oblivion. For those who haven't played this type of game (RPG), don't be afraid...this is THE BEST game on the Playstation 3.

Coming from a football/basketball sports game fan (GO Lions...yeah right), I originally thought that I wouldn't like the game because it may have been too "nerdy" for me. Boy was I wrong. This is easily one of the deepest, most customizable games made in the last 5-10 years! Once you finished the tutorial level (Imperial Prison), YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU WANT in this world. You'll learn anything from powerful magic to hand-to-hand combat to summoning all sorts of things. You can join guilds with other people, be a bad guy, be a good guy, become a gladiator or a master thief...Just about anything you can think of. Once you get into the flow of the game, you'll spend hours a day just playing it and progressing through.

In terms of looks and graphics, on an High Definition TV (720P), this game is probably one of the best, if not the best looking game on the Playstation 3. Its as good looking as a $1000-2000 dollar computer and better looking than its Xbox 360 counterpart. I am also under the impression that even on a Standard TV set, the game still looks great, just not "HD great."

Although there is no online gameplay (No online on ALL versions of the game), the game has an incredibly deep artificial intelligence system that will keep you busy for hundreds of hours worth of gameplay.

Bottom Line, if you own a Playstation 3, buy this game! If you don't have the money, borrow the money. If you can't borrow the money, rob a Best Buy...kidding, just kidding. The game is 10/10 and the best title on the system so far.

You probably already know all you want to about PS3 karaoke, but just wanted to mention one thing that seems to be "unique" to this PS3 karaoke game...

Although my other PS3 Karaoke singstar game (the one with the guy wearing big Rayban-type aviator sunglasses, white t-shirt, and holding a mic) allowed me to eject the ps3 karaoke disk, and insert ps2 karaoke disks ... this ps3 Abba one does not seem to allow that ... the ps3 Abba game seems to only allow me to insert/play other ps3 singstar disks (not ps2 ones).

Of course, as long as you've got at least 1 ps3 singstar game that allows you to insert ps2 singstar disks, you're good-to-go, but just make sure Abba isn't your only ps3 singstar game if you're wanting/expecting to be able to use your old ps2 singstar songs!

This is my very first 'singstar' product and I am very impressed with the game. yes, this is a game element to it other than just having a sing along. I love singing and sometimes off key too: game option 1 entails you sing along with prompter to match both crescendo and length -even as an ABBA fan, I realized I really did not know some songs as well as thought it was challenging! then the game will rate you. Now if you want a playback there you can (if you dare!).

Option 2 allows you to battle with another singer to see who hit the notes the best! Great game for parties.

I also checked out the on lone option: on writing this review there were ~750 songs and there is a British centric collection (this game was made in the UK), but plenty of songs mainly in the 80's, but also quite a lot of 2006-2009 songs too. Choices also included some duet songs too (which is another option that is offered on the game). the songs are saved on your harddrive and a little like the kindle you can retrieved it as long as you have a log on account (for when you have to replace your playstation console.

I thought this game was really well designed. You only need to buy one disc to access the online option. I am pleased that they are adding new songs to the collectioin (currently priced at $1.49 good value given that includes the prompter too). I also purchased the singstar microphones for PS2, which works perfectly with the game (if you want to save a little money, which is you choice and it is not wireless).

This is ABBA Gold as Singstar. I love singstar and I cant sing, but this singstar is fun. If you grew up listening to the songs of ABBA or just became a fan after watching the movie Mamma Mia, you will enjoy this game. Yes, you only get ABBA on this disk, but oh what fun you will have. It is also interesting to think that they made all of those videos in the pre MTV era. This is a fun romp through musical history.

(REVIEW UPDATED due to SingStar 3.01 update)

I'm going to assume you are familiar with the SingStar games and just want to know if this is worth getting and if so, which version.

If you have a PS2 and like ABBA, think of this game as DLC at $1.49/song. (At the $29.99 price point)

If you have a PS3, on the other hand, and like ABBA, here goes:

1. If you don't already have a SingStar PS3 game, SingStar ABBA PS3 gives you all 25 songs, access to the SingStar Store where you can get DLC, and the disc-swapping feature to play songs from other SingStar discs.

2. If you do have a SingStar PS3 game, the PS2 version offers 20 songs (again, $1.49/song) compared to the PS3 version's 25 songs (at $1.59/song). The music videos seem to be the same regardless of version, and the PS3 version doesn't seem to have any new features.

This game made a much needed return to the stealth aspect of the Splinter Cell games. Prepare to be in the shadows for a large part of the game which is something every fan of the stealth genre in any game should enjoy but especially the die hard Splinter Cell fans. I'm currently halfway through the main campaign but that's only because I spend so much time playing the online, "Spies vs. Mercs". I must say that Splinter Cell's online gameplay is the most satisfying multiplayer I have ever played. It is so much fun!. The spies and mercs balance each other out in a way that makes this online gameplay one genius of an idea. Many people complain about the graphics but I think the graphics are fine and I have no issues with them at all. In my opinion the game actually looks great. This game was very well made on behalf of Ubisoft Toronto and you can tell they really read the reviews on Conviction and cared about their fans so they went a step backwards and gave us everything we deserved and the game conviction should have been. Not to say Conviction was bad but Blacklist is just down right badass. This game is highly recommended by someone who has always enjoyed playing Splinter Cell games. This game packs a lot of bang for your buck as it has just the right amount of campaign, 14 co-op missions, and much more. The currency system in the game works well as you earn money from missions and online games and you can use the money to buy countless amount of upgrades to help you as Sam Fisher and even as a Spy or a Merc when you play some multiplayer. And for those longtime fans who hate how they changed the voice actor of Sam and replaced Michael Ironside, all I have to say to you is don't let that one aspect keep you from continuing to be a fan and enjoying this awesome game. So much more to say about Blacklist but to sum it all up go out and pick this game up because quite simply, Sam Fisher has never been better!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program "As I crept up the stairs, I knew I needed to be quiet as a church mouse. Crouching down, I peeked around the corner and saw my target down the corridor. I was fresh out of grenades, trickery was my only remaining option. Then I remembered the switch on the wall. I turned off the hallway lights, and the guard decided to come over and check it out. His rifle was slung low...big mistake. Before he knew what was happening, I sprang from my hiding place and took him out my karambit was the quickest thing he never saw."

This is just a small taste of what goes through my mind while playing Splinter Cell: Blacklist. And it only gets better.

+ PROS:

+ Engaging storyline

+ Lots and lots of unlockable weapons & gear to customize

+ Several ways to earn $ for upgrades

+ Single player missions, co-op missions, Spies vs. Mercs missions, Gone Dark missions, and even a mobile app "SC Spider-Bot"

+ Customize your difficulty level Rookie, Normal, Realistic or Perfectionist

CONS

Glitch on Briggs' 4th co-op mission

Occasional glitches on co-op and Spies vs. Mercs

PLOT:

In this game we play as Sam Fisher, a well-seasoned covert operative. A terrorist group which call themselves "The Engineers" are planning several escalating attacks on US interests (called The Blacklist). They will only stop their attacks if the U.S. government agrees to recall all American troops deployed abroad.

President Caldwell has tasked Sam with hunting down the Engineers and putting a stop to their plans. His base of operations is a cargo plane codenamed "Paladin", and Sam has a few allies on his 4th Echelon team: Charlie Cole, Isaac Briggs and Anna 'Grim' Grímsdóttir.

GAMEPLAY:

This is a 3rd person shooter with stealth gameplay. Sam's tasks vary from level to level on some he has to completely avoid detection, others he needs to pacify all targets, and others he needs to retrieve items or disable security devices. Sam also has some optional level objectives: he can choose to pick up intel in the form of USB devices called Dead Drops, or capture a High Value Target, or hack a Blacklist computer.

Sometimes you might find yourself as another character shooting missiles or sniping from above, but for the most part, you'll be playing as Sam Fisher have goggles, will travel.

There are some extra gameplay missions which can only be completed with a cooperative player. While in co-op mode, you can rescue your teammate if they get injured, and vice versa. To toughen the game up a bit, there are some parts in co-op mode where you're separated from your partner and you have to be self-reliant. If you get wounded or captured, they can't help you.

The first "preview" mission roped me right in to the story. It gave a full tutorial on how to move my character, how to interact with the environment, how to stay out of sight and how to take down my enemies. The storyline was very rich and kept me interested from the first grenade in Guam to the last gunshot in Site F. It's one thing to read a political thriller, it's quite another to experience it through the mindset of a seasoned operative, and Splinter Cell accomplishes this brilliantly.

You can upgrade the Paladin command center to unlock gameplay improvements such as health upgrades, radar views, prototype weapons, intel locations, faster regenerations for coop and single player, custom loadout slots, black market weapons, and even in-field customization.

The improvements don't stop with Paladin you can customize your player for the style of gameplay you want!

If you're itching to earn a Ghost rating and want to leave nothing but shadows, you can load up on proximity shock land mines and sleeping gas, wear your stealth nanofiber suit and use a crossbow with noisemaker bolts to confuse and distract your foes.

For the Rambo-style players who want an Assault rating (meaning shoot everything with a pulse), you're covered too. I personally recommend incendiary grenades, ceramic plate armor, and the SC-15 pistol, with armor piercing ammunition and an accurized barrel.

You can create 3 customized suit loadouts for the main game, and there are also several unlockable upgrades for the online games.

If the main game and side missions aren't enough to whet your appetite, give Spies vs. Mercs a try. This is an online matchup between a team of spies or mercenaries there are 6 online gameplay modes (some of which are locked until you level up). You are given a map and a task to complete in the allotted timeframe...You could be a mercenary out to steal intel from the spies, and you have to protect yourself and your teammates to bring the data home. Or, you could be a spy trying to hack into a data terminal and you have to rely on your teammates to protect you from getting killed by a gunshot or a vicious drone. At the end of the match, you're graded on the success/failure of your team, the # of kills you performed, any bonuses you may have earned, and so forth. Leveling up your character earns battle tokens, which are needed to unlock upgrades for Spies vs. Mercs.

There are daily challenges and weekly challenges to earn more in-game currency for upgrades, and you can also earn money for completing other challenges, such as knocking out 3 people with a gas grenade, or using lethal hand-to-hand combat.

TROPHIES:

There are 48 trophies to earn in this game. If a player sticks to the main storyline only, there's roughly 11 trophies to earn. However, it benefits the player to complete the extra missions from Kobin, Grim, Charlie and Briggs so they can get better weapons and armor to suit their style of gamepay. None of the trophies struck me as particularly difficult to earn, but the most tedious one was "Enhanced Lethality Demonstrated". Thankfully, there are several videos online to walk you through it. Trophy hunters can earn the Platinum in about a month or less.

I will note that 3 Spy upgrades are not available until reaching level 51, 53 and 55 in multiplayer so there's incentive to keep playing after the Platinum trophy has been earned.

PROS:

As I mentioned previously, the storyline was excellent. While I improved my gameplay, I found myself geniunely caring about the characters and understanding their motivations, whether they agreed with Sam's ideals or not. To me, this wasn't just a game of "shoot everything that moves".

There are SO MANY WAYS to earn extra money in this game. There are over 100 combined gameplay challenges for single player mode as well as co-op modes. From loud gun headshots to putting dogs to sleep, from breaching door charges to sneaking past cameras, there is no shortage of ways to put upgrade money into your pockets. If you have friends that play this game, you can beat their high scores on missions and earn even MORE money.

This is the first time I have played an app on my cell phone which ties into a PS3 game, and it was very fun, not to mention addictive. I downloaded SC Spider-Bot onto my android phone I could play Ghost, Panther or Assault style, just like the regular game, but I play as a little robot. I decided to complete all the Ghost missions and within a few days, I had unlocked Alpha Goggles and Boots for use in my regular game. I could also switch the points I earned into in-game currency, which was a nice touch.

I really enjoyed the daily "Gone Dark" missions. These were a nice change of pace from the regular gameplay, they have the same dynamic as "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego". You are given a report regarding terrorist activities, and you have to try and figure out where to go next. If you guess right, you get another clue. At the end, you need to make a decision and if you make the right one, your score multiplier increases by 0.5% over time, this will lead to more and more money for your upgrades.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist understands that you might have troubles getting through some of the harder missions, so they allow you 4 different levels of difficulty, which can be changed in the pause menu during the mission. However, completing a level on Perfectionist difficulty with a Ghost rating will earn you the most money...so it's in your best interest to learn to move like a ninja if you want to level up quickly.

Rambo time comes later.

CONS:

To be honest, I didn't have very many negative experiences with this game. The only item which caused me a bit of annoyance was a glitch at the end of Brigg's last mission.

**SLIGHT SPOILERS BELOW**

During the "Abandoned City" mission, there is a segment near the end where Briggs and Sam are sitting on the ground shooting at their enemies. My co-op partner died, and when we started from our last checkpoint, the enemies stopped spawning and the level couldn't be completed. This happened both when I joined the level, and when I was the host player. It's been reported to Ubisoft, so hopefully this will be fixed when the next patch comes out. If this happens, your only option is to restart the level.

**SPOILERS OVER**

There were occasional glitches during Spies vs. Mercs: In a game of Extraction, one of my teammates dropped the intel on a set of stairs and it couldn't be picked up by any other player...no matter what we tried. In another a game of Blacklist where I played a Merc, no one could tell which terminal was getting hacked until it was over 60% complete. The only other glitches I found were on co-op missions and they were relatively minor, flickering on one side of the screen or a phantom grenade explosion graphic that appeared out of nowhere. All in all, most of the glitches I came across weren't game-breakers.

WHAT WOULD I IMPROVE?

I'm a total sucker for branching storylines in games, and Splinter Cell Blacklist would have benefited from such a dynamic. Every mission in this game can be completed successfully, but what if the player completed a mission but failed in their task? This could have led to certain missions being either available or unavailable. With all the extra money Sam earns for completing missions, he could use some of that to bribe people into giving up information on Blacklist activities. Or, maybe he could have "purchased" information from some of Charlie's contacts to unlock shortcuts through levels (door codes, vent access, something like that).

SPECIAL PRAISE:

Whoever decided to put in the "Call Sarah" option after each mission. This part of the game is not necessary at all, but it added a layer of depth to Sam Fisher which I wasn't expecting. When a solo mission is completed, Sam can call his daughter from Paladin and check on her, makes sure she's ok, and only hangs up after he tells her he loves her. It shows me Sam Fisher isn't all business, he also cares about family.

So to whoever added that in...thank you.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

This game was an extremely pleasant experience. I would start my mornings completing a Gone Dark mission, and increase my earnings multiplier before I went to work. During my lunch hour, I'd play the SC Spider-bot game on my phone. When I got home, I'd either work on completing a few missions on Ghost/Panther/Assault style, or I'd earn some Battle Tokens in Spies vs. Mercs. In short, my days started and ended with Splinter Cell.

I didn't mind the replacement of Michael Ironside's voice with Eric Johnson It's true, Michael Ironside has a very deep and gravelly voice which commands respect...but I was totally okay with the switch to Eric Johnson's voice. There's an eerie calmness when I heard Sam Fisher speak; whether he talked to a colleague or interrogated a known terrorist with a folding chair Eric Johnson took his role very seriously, and it shows in the final product.

For people who love unlocking and upgrading weapons and gear to create the ultimate covert ops warrior, this is a great game to sink your teeth into. I highly recommend Splinter Cell: Blacklist to anyone who is a fan of the stealth genre of games. If you liked Hitman: Absolution, you'll really enjoy this one.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Story:

Returning character Sam Fisher, from Splinter Cell: Conviction, and his team are directed to stop a series of terrorist attacks that are being launched every few days by a group known only as the Engineers. Their demands are for the United States to recall all their troops in every country and bring them home. Until this is done, new attacks are launched upon aditional unknown locations. This list of places to be attacked is known as the Blacklist. The mission of you and your team is to stop these attacks.

Down time:

Your main headquarters throughout the game is a plane called the Paladin. It's 4th Echelon's version of an Air Force One on steroids. Between missions you go here and you can pick up intelligence information gathered by your team members for missions. This is also where you customize your loadout for Sam and select which mission you want to play next. You can walk around freely and talk to other characters and see what info they may have for you to use for your next mission. You also have a new tool called the Strategic Mission Interface (SMI) that updates you with info about your objectives and is sort of a mobile handheld version of Paladin, letting you access mission objectives and such throughout missions.

Game play:

While Splinter Cell is designed as a stealth game, Blacklist lets you deviate from this and play it in a whole new way. You can now chose to play each mission in Assault, Panther or Ghost mode. Ghost is your stealth mode, with your goals being getting from beginning to end with as little enemy contact as possible. Panther is a middle ground, letting to play stealthy, but with some hands on action as well. The third, Assault mode, is my favorite. In this mode you play a running gunner. You come in guns blazing and demolishing every enemy that crosses your path.

While the controller commands are both Ghost and Assault mode friendly, having smooth fast actions combined into a single button push, the cash/points system favors stealth over unloading lots of lead. Your score at the end of each mission will affect your cash payout and Ghost mode, and the objectives associated with it, tend to produce a larger monetary reward at the end. This money is then used to upgrade and unlock weapons and tools. But Splinter Cell was created originally as a stealthy game, so it's not surprising that this would be rewarded in points as the games primary objective. So if you want to run and gun (like myself) you may have to replay a mission to get enough cash to buy one of the new high tech toys you can use against your enemies.

Conclusion:

Whether playing the single player missions, co-op missions or online multi-player, Splinter Cell Blacklist has plenty to offer fans of the series. The new option to chose different levels of attack (Assault/Panther/Ghost) let those who like to go into a mission with guns blazing finally have a place in the game. In addition, since there's several modes, after you have done a mission in one version, you can then go back and replay it again, trying to complete it in the other modes. It makes each of the game's mission have more replayability, giving you a different secondary objective to try and achieve. This combined with a long singer player campaign, makes for many hours of entertaining game play.

I love this game and would have given it 5 stars but the save game mechanism is flawed, after playing a mission to a checkpoint if I quit the game I have to start from the beginning of the mission, this appears to be a bug or at least a design flaw. If this was designed intentionally what were the developers thinking, this is a waste of time to have to start at the beginning of a mission, plus there is NO user save game option, the game decides when to save a game, not very user friendly!

Other than that the game is great, good story lines, interaction and graphics.

The reason for me to buy a PS3 was play "Splinter Cell" coop with my brother (split screen), I'm talking when "SP Conviction" came out. I know, "Conviction" was a Xbox exclusive, but I allways wait for that game for the PS3...

The game have a cool Menu, because you have to walk in the Paladin to do things in the game.

I like the story and the way you can play the single player and coop missions. You can choose between 3 classes: Ghost, Panther and Assault. And If you play like a truly Ghost you'll earn a lot of points and money for your weapons, suits, gadgets... because you're playing like the classics splinter cell games, where you don't need to use your weapons.

I like the actors in the game. Ok! Michael Ironside (the EPIC voice) is not in the game but Eric Johnson did a new, fresh and original job in the Sam Fisher's character.

The coop (or solo, but coop is better, online or split screen) is very mixed, you have Kobin missions where you have to eliminate all the enemies. Grim missions where you have to be a ghost and take the objetives. Briggs missions where you can be a ghost but is too hard, and be a panther or assault is much easy. And the Charlie missions, these are good to get many points and money.

"Spies vs Mercs" (the Multiplayer) I like it! at first time is difficult but when you learn how to play and buy better classes of spies and mercenaries, the game will turn much easy.

If you're new in the "Splinter Cell" series and you like James Bond or you like to play spies games, you have to buy this game.

I was a little worried about buying this because Mad Catz doesn't exactly have a wonderful history in my experience with them. I gave this a shot because I really like the idea of mapping the L3 and R3 buttons to the back of the controller and I read a few favorable reviews on it.

First off, it's a super comfortable controller with rubber grips on the sides that keep the controller in your hand. It's much lighter than a dual shock as it does not have rumble (which I prefer, rumble is annoying) and it's also slightly larger than a dual shock which I like as well. The buttons on the face of the controller work just like a first part controller. The D-Pad is larger and is slightly mushy. Don't take that as "not responsive", it works fine, it just isn't as firm as the Dual Shock. The analog sticks feel very similar to Sony's as far as texture goes, but they are much more stiff than Sony's. That means using them is a slight adjustment because you have to press harder than you would with the first party controller. Not a negative in my book, just an adjustment. The R2/L2 triggers are probably the biggest improvement over the Dual Shock. They are wider and have an actual trigger feel to them. They are also super snappy, they snap back to place instantly.

I need to mention the additional buttons on the back of the controllers as that is the main reason I purchased this. The default is to have the buttons replace the R3/L3 (which replaces pushing down on the analog sticks) but you can customize that to other buttons as well. The buttons sit on the back of the controller right where my index fingers rest. The buttons are responsive and actually turn out to be a nice advantage over the Dual Shock. Instead of trying to press down an analog stick (which lead me to aim incorrectly or run in a wrong direction) I can just press the buttons on the back and keep my view/aim/direction correct with no issue. If you find the analog stick button press annoying, this is a great controller for you.

The R1/L1 triggers are my only real complaint. They are mushy, similar to the D-Pad, and need to be pressed a certain way to get them to work. It's just an adjustment as to where I need to put my fingers instead of how I was used to using them before. After an hour of using the controller, I was fine.

The last thing to touch on is the look of the controller. I love the digital camo (I got white) and the LED's under the analog sticks are a nice touch to give the controller a unique, custom look. In the box you get a USB dongle (sorry, it's not bluetooth), charge cable and carrying case. The case is a throw away, but it's nice to get an extra charge cable.

Overall, this is a great controller, probably the best Mad Catz product I have used. Is it as good as Sony's Dual Shock? No, but it's very close. For me the controller was worth it for the comfort (love those grips), re-mapping of the R3/L3 buttons and the aesthetics of a nice design. It might not be for everyone and it might not be as useful to other types of games, but it works very well with FPS games, which are my favorite. I'd gladly recommend this if you just want something other than a Dual Shock.

sure it looks cool and everything and feels good or whatever but whats the point if you cant pop heads with it. When you press the shoulder buttons if your not directly over it then the buttons dont press. There terrible, the regular dualshock 3 is the best most responsive controller to use. The sticks on this controller lag as well. Basically if you want to show off to your friends about how you wasted 50 dollars buy this controller. If you want to pop heads and decapitate fools keep the microsoft of sony controller that came with the system. Save your money the manufacturing if this controller is criminal. Its junk.

I have the arctic camo version and love the feel of the controller. It has rubber on the sides and the L3 and R3 buttons light up green when you turn them on. The instructions suck that came with it. I have definite lag when playing online. That's the main problem. Even playing a campain game the controller still lags. Love the controllers looks, hate the response and playability. Also need to have the vibrate/shock system in it.

I was hoping I'd find this controller more favorable for playing FPS games since it has concave triggers instead of the convex ones on the DualShock3. They performed ok for me, not really any better or worse. The issue is the analog sticks. There is no precision. The sticks have a huge dead zone where no input on the stick will register in the game. When you finally get outside the dead zone it moves too much. This leads to your crosshairs passing right by your target. Another thing that bugged me a little was the responsiveness of the L1 and R1 buttons. I tended to hit the outside parts of these buttons, and when I did that they would not register unless I pressed harder than I normally would. If I focused on hitting the buttons more towards the center lighter presses registered fine. I also would have preferred concave sticks as I feel I have more control over them that way. I played NCAA Football 10 with this as well and playing that felt a little different but not really in a bad way. It worked fine for that. It also doesn't have rumble, which I could care less about, but other people do not like. The controller does have some nice things about it. It fits comfortably in your hand. The rubberized grips are comfortable. It has two buttons on the back you can map to one of three buttons each. R3, SQ, and TR for the right side and L3, X, and O for the left. They work well as alternatives to analog stick presses, but for me the could have been about 1/8 inch closer to the middle, but that's nitpicking. The dongle is nice and small, the size and shape of a flash drive. The lights on the analog stick are actually kind of cool but I never leave them on as they are too bright and distracting. If you are going to use this for an FPS, and since its Modern Warfare 2 branded I imagine you are, I would certainly avoid this controller. I'm not sure if you could do worse since the only other controller I've used is the DS3, which is superior to this. I've gone back to the DS3 for MW2 and will be getting rid of this controller.

I am not impressed with this game at all and isn't what I expected. I have owned every single Tony Hawk game and have loved each and every one of them, with this one being the exception. The board/controller that comes with the game is too sensitive in some aspects and not sensitive enough in others. There's no way to adjust it, for example: You use the board to navigate through the menus and I found this frustrating because the ever so slight lean towards any dirrection will cause the curser to scroll through menu after menu and select something I wasn't even trying to pick. Durning game play it seems like no matter how hard you lean to the right, left, up, or down the game is slow to register your motion. The motions you do make on the board/controller do not mimic anything of a real skateboard maneuver. Growing up on a skateboard, I expected this to be somewhat of a simulation of real skating... it is not! The most disappointing part of this game is the "levels." No more free roaming around skate spots, your character follows a predetermined path as you can't not steer in the game. Each level is a challenge of race to the finsh line, high score of tricks, and "do this _____ (ollie, grind, fliptrick)here." The Best thing I can compare this game to is the video arcade game 'Top Skater' that really sucks. I wish I hadn't wasted my time with this one... Thanks THPS for letting me down.

Bought the game... Got it home... unboxed it, and the controller failed to sync up.

Tried all kinds of different ways to get it to sync and it never would.

Tried calling the support line, and after only 2 or 3 selections, was told by the ever helpful automated system we'd have to RMA the board and do it only on the internet. I kinda wanted to talk to a real person but this was NOT an option.

Went onto their primary support web site, into their knowledge-base, and, after following THEIR directions, was told it needed to be RMA'd (again). Tried to follow the link on their web page to RMA, and it pulled up an error (a PHP error it looked like).

I sent an e-mail to their support, and they e-mailed me the link to the bad RMA page. I mailed them back saying that I couldn't even GET to the RMA page on the web, and they said they would look into it.

Mind you, over 48 hours had elapsed by this time. My flavor for the game, controller, and manufacturer had soured and I was done. I returned the game to the original vendor and wash my hands of anything from Tony Hawk again. Looks like Skate from here on out.

I bought this game for my son for Christmas. Despite the bad word of mouth... I mean.. my kid wanted it for Christmas... how do you say "no" to that?

I brought the game home and wouldn't sync up with the dongl... a bit of a buzzkill on Christmas morning. So, I exchanged it and the second board fired right up and we started playing.

After calibrating the board and trying a few challenges.. here's what we decided:

Pros: Um... the board looks cool. It seems well constructed.

Cons: There seems to be a tiny lag in what you're doing on the board to what you're doing on the screen. For example, when you lean slightly to turn, your character doesn't turn right away... so, you instinctively lean a little harder and suddenly your character is turning too much and going in circles! My son quickly became frustrated at this. Also.. I may not be the most graceful guy... but I know how to ride a skateboard. I find it difficult at times to balance on the thing. I played on a well worn area rug... but I think it would work best on heavy carpet. I can't imagine playing on a hard surface (they give you sticky fabric pads to stick to the bottom for this). I'm surprised I didn't see a hundred disclaimers saying that Tony Hawk isn't responsible if you fall and crack your head on a coffee table.

I wouldn't recommend this to anyone... not unless there's some sort of update pushed out by Activision to correct the board's sensitivity issues.

I bought this game for my nephews skateboard fanatics.

After many hours on X-mas day trying to get the thing "synched" or "calibrated", they had to give up.

It simply would not work at all.

Quite a bummer!!

To Amazon's credit, however, they make returns amazingly easy.

We'll see how long it takes for the refund.

I got this Game for Christmas and was really pumped to plug it in and play. I grew up with tony hawk games playing all of the original games through High School. This Game is far from what the old games used to be. when i first heard of Ride i thought to myself this is a great concept i figured it would bring an aspect of the Wii to my playstation 3 but i was Wrong. The board Sucks, the gameplay is Terrible and everything about this game is ridiculous. This is by far the worst THPS game to ever be released. Its a real shame becuse this game has alot of potential. Some of my bigest gripes with RIDE are No 2 player mode(other than online), No option to play the game without the RIDE board. Bring back some feeling of the old school tony hawks 1-3 those are still the best ones. anyways I hope this review was helpful save your $120 and buy a used Wii for $30 more you will be far more satisfied.

I would like to lead things off by saying this game is CHALLENGING. At times, almost to a fault. I think this is where people get irritated with this game and walk away. Hell, the "tutorial stage" was harder than some games' last stages. This is the number one thing to keep in mind........expect to get frustrated. In fact I rarely find myself taking frequent breaks from games, but Between some of the replicated stages and the shear fact that the vampires are NOT easy to sneak by, I had to to retain my sanity.

Now for the rest of the game. It's fun. Nothing to blow your mind away, but a fun game provided to like a challenge. Think of it as Metal Gear Solid or Splinter Cell with very little room for error in the stealth aspect. You MUST not allow yourself to be seen. It's not like you can be seen, run and hide, be forgotten about and try again. You get seen in this game, you are forgotten only AFTER you're eaten.

Graphics are decent, nothing to write home about, but nothing too horrible. There are times where I wish they would have put a little more work in to it, but on the whole about three stars. The voice acting SUCKS!!!!! I don't know who they got for it, but it sounds like a junior high play in delivery. Controls are fair, nothing tremendously annoying and most are very natural although I have found myself occasionally running when I shouldn't have.

In short, this a solid 3 star game. Nothing that really comes out and grabs you.....whether good or bad. The few things that DO stand out GOOD compensate for the few things that stand out BAD. I wouldn't say it is a terrifying game, but the fact that you can't get complacent with movement does get your nerves on edge and when you get nabbed I know I still jump every now and then. A great idea for a game that was not treated how it deserved. I would definitely wait until it comes down in price to buy and even then I strongly recommend anyone to rent before buying it. It will NOT be for everyone.

There are reviews here that have mixed feeling about it. But here is my two cents: 1 cent-not splinter cell or metal gear! This game has vampires looking to kill you and eat you. That is what makes it hard to get around. 2 cent-vampires looking to kill and eat you with no where to go if you are seen is what makes this game hard. And there is my two cents. This game was interesting in what was listed above and I was glad that someone took the time to do something like this but I really wished that they had the fun factor in mind when creating this. Like I said before these are vampires and they have a heighten sense of reality but to make it to the point that you can't even survive long enough to get a feel for it will turn a lot of players off. IF you think this is just your average gun and run shooter which is what got me then you are in for a HUGE surprise. IF think that the tactics in Splinter cell and metal gear will get you by then you are in for an even bigger disappointment. I can't say enough that this game just plain out will have you wanting to just fling it against the wall cause its so hard and not fun at all when you think about other stealth games out there. If you feel that your skills in stealth are that good then here is a challenge for you and personally I didn't even finish it cause of the fact is was jsut frustrating trying to survive long enough to figure out how to get by one or two vampires. And if you are not on the roof in snipeing them off before moving you are dead. And if you shoot one and forget the other then come out of your hiding you are got cause they are moving to the sound of your shot. That is just one example of how frustrating it was. Get this if you think you got game but personally this will just piss you off the way it did me.

Buy Vampire Rain: Altered Species Now

Didn't really get much fun out of this game, based on 3 hours into it, there is still no "game" to play. There are cutscenes after cutscenes (in game graphix, no video), you spend the majority of the time you do get to use your character sneaking from point "a" to "b", and maybe you get to kill a vampire on the way. And the vampires? One hit your dead. One hit throws you into the air (there has been no counter or dodge as far as I can tell) the second hit finishes you off. 3 hours and I think I've come across 5 vampires. Very very weak game. Just save your cash and look for something else.

Read Best Reviews of Vampire Rain: Altered Species Here

Now personally I feel this game got 100 times more hate than it actually deserved, now the game isn't all that good but it's also not that bad either. I've seen videos of people playing this game and frankly they are playing the game wrong, this game is meant to be 100% stealth where you have to sneak by the vampire not fight them head on (except when the game actually wants you to fight them), but sneaking by these vampires is no easy task so be prepared to die again and again and again x10. The game looks like a first gen PS2 game, voice acting is okay, soundtrack is pretty good dark and mysterious, gameplay is a lot like Splinter Cell but a bit inferior. Overall the game can be fun at times but can be annoying to the point where you have to take a break from playing, still the game does have its good moments. If they ever make a Vampire Rain 2 and fix all the problems this game has, I personally think this could have the potential to be something great

Some background on me: I am a very active fan of video games, purchasing probably at least two titles a month over the last two years, on average. I am also very familiar with Warhammer 40,000 universe. Some of you may be able to figure out from my 'real name' title, that I have some 'street cred' among the Warhammer 40,000 enthusiasts.

I have so far given Space Marine 4 stars, because I don't think it will fall below that. It is only release date + 2, and I have not fully experienced every aspect that Space Marine has to offer. I will update this over the next week or two as I complete it and venture into the online section.

Regarding game play, people are most likely going to compare this to Gears of War. In fact, despite the fact that Warhammer 40,000 has been around for 30 years, I have heard the term 'ripped-off' when describing this already. There are some similarities, to be sure. For one, you are in third person. You also have a combined use of gun-play and traditional hack'n'slash mechanics. You also tend to be vastly outnumbered.

Where Gears of War is a decidedly different game is the cover system (a la Kill.Switch, et al). I would have liked to see a cover system. In fact, playing a third person shooter without this mechanic today seems odd. My feelings are they did not include it because it would seem like too much of a direct 'rip-off' of Gears of War, there would probably be a lot of interesting clipping errors considering how bulky they are, or mostly like it just seems 'unheroic' for a marine to take cover. I would put my money on the last bit, given the early footage of the game, and the at one point even more idealized stance of marines laying down fire at distant enemies. The curious byproduct of this decision, though, is that you spend a lot of the game heroically shooting while you walk backwards. We will abstain from using the word retreat, if only for prideful reasons.

Curiously, this doesn't really hurt the game. You are fighting Orks, and they do not have a lot of guns that do a lot of damage or are threatening at range. For the most part, you can outgun them through most of the game. They most potent in hand-to-hand combat where they are individually 'not-so-bad' and can collectively destroy you in a hurry. I still kind of wish the cover system was there, as you will often find yourself walking/running to a big piece of cover to allow your regenerating armor to replenish itself.

The regenerating armor system works in an interesting way. You have basically 100% Armor and 100% health. Your armor will always regenerate to 100% if you have a period where you take no damage. Your health is only vulnerable (to most attacks) after the armor is depleted, so you could run around with 1 health the whole time, and as long as they never undid your regenerating armor, you would be fine. Hand to hand combat is important for regenerating life. Stunned enemies can be executed in epic-ly bloody manners, and this generates your health to some degree or fully, depending on the enemy. There is no real sensible way to justify this, but it is rather fun, and fitting to do these executions.

Gun play in the game is fun. I prefer to try to kill the Orks before they get to me, which is often quite challenging. I haven't run into any crazy or annoying stuff, or any enemies that are of the dumb, fun-killing persuasion.

Hack'n'slash mechanics are of a passable grade. There is nothing very special here. You basically can stun or you can attack. A little extra depth here would have been nice. We are living in an era post Batman Arkham Asylum, so you won't be playing this game purely for this sort of fun. The finishing moves are really what will probably entertain you the most.

The graphics are good. I would put them in the B+ range for today's games. There are shadows, dynamic lighting, a good draw distance, and no real slow-downs in game. If I were to nit pick, the blood textures could use some more definition. The character models are good. Basically, it seems pretty well polished, just nothing spectacular.

The sound is good for the game. Sound, basically, shouldn't distract you, and should help push you into the game a little further. Most of the Ork battle cries are predictable if not repetitive. I don't think that they have only 5 or 6 voice tracks. I think it has more to do with they simply don't have a lot of really profound things to add. There are nice things that show an attention to detail beyond just lets get it done from the occasional automated message meant for imperial citizens (ie: "Serve the Emperor by joining designated corpse removal crews. . .") or the way your bolter sounds different when you have 30 bolts in it versus when there are only 5 left like a real gun often will. The voice acting is pretty good too.

For those of you wondering how this fits into 40k in, I would say this game is not unfaithful to the universe. People may nitpick about the premise or the idea that an Ultramarine Captain would deviate from the Index Astartes, but looking at the marines, I think they are pretty well represented here. They come off as faithful, humble servants to the Imperium rather than a bunch of egomaniacs in iron man suits. The dialog is appropriate, just stilted/archaic enough to pass for the setting without being obnoxious. If I were to have made any changes, I'd probably have wanted it to be darker with a little less color, but even when the game is bright, it is still grim.

All in all, if you're a fan of this genre of video game this isn't a bad buy. It is fun, and I hope it has a lasting campaign. Like I said, I will update this review at least a one or two more times, but so far the critics seem to be right, its definitely not bad, and it may be the best Warhammer 40,000 game to date.

Other closing thoughts:

The Chainsword has never been so cool.

I still wish they'd make a game about someone other than the Ultramarines or the Blood Ravens.

-----------------------------------

Update: 9/12

I have beaten the game. The 8-12 hours is about correct probably. It is suitably challenging on normal, but not brutally difficult. I would say that I liked the writing, through-and-through. I can't say this about many games, and with regard to Warhammer, specifically, I have some strong opinions. I think they did a very good job getting this element right. That said, the ending isn't what a lot of people will love, but if you are familiar with the Warhammer 40,000 universe, it makes sense, even though its unlikely that it would happen to the Ultramarines. Most of the assertions I make above are still my opinion through the end of the game, though as you progress, the need for a cover system grows continuously as encounters become much more dangerous at range.

The multiplayer is kind of an interesting, but touchy suspect. I am not going to adjust this down from 4 stars, but if you are very much into multiplayer, there are some bugs that you will probably want worked out before you try--and I should emphasize try--to play Space Marine online. It is often very difficult to get into games. They tend to be short when you're in them. Maps are not very expansive, but there are smaller maps out there. The customization available seems amazingly and awesome. For the most part, only you will get to marvel at your creation because everything is happening so quickly, and I think a lot of people are going to wish they would enforce a color scheme on all players on the same side since you end up with a grab bag and sometimes its tough to tell who is on your team. This could also be rectified by always placing a red indicator over identified enemies or a menu option so that the computer would color the guys the same as your own guy locally and it would not need to effect the other players in game.

Being low level is very unforgiving as you get used to multiplayer. The ability to use the load-out and perks of the marine that killed you is an interesting balancing feature. I will predict this will not have great wide-stream lasting appeal on account of general dominance of assault marines, connection issues, the very limited number of maps, and the number of A-list games that are coming out in the next few months which will provide significant competition. This said, there are no other games where you can run around as a marine, so there will probably be someone online if they ever figure out the connection issues, and I am looking forward to see how 'Exterminatus,' the multiplayer coop horde mode, works out.

Update: 9/22

The recent patch has made finding a game much easier if you're interested to play this online. My previous statements about the multiplayer experience aside from this remain largely true. I still find this game to be fun to play online. I think a lot of that is just because I am a Warhammer 40,000 fan and there's no substitute for this game if you want to play as a Space Marine. This game's multiplayer is a peer-to-peer (P2P) system with no dedicated servers from THQ. Playing 8 on 8 on a P2P system is something that is generally not done on consoles or computers very often for a reason. There are inherent flaws that will hold back the multiplayer experience because of this. Lag is often that issue and when the host leaves the game, migrating everyone to a new host seems to work only 50% of the time at best. They do have future patch plans, so I will continue to update this as more information becomes available and the online experience changes.

To start off this game is just plain fun. It is a mix of close combat, and shooting. Anyone can pick it up and have a blast. It is perfect though for anybody that is a fan of the Warhammer 40k universe. I know being a hardcore fan I have always wanted to be an Astrates and just wreak havoc. You can definitely do this. The main campaign does a good job of doing this. There is plenty of action and the story could easily be from one of the 40k novels. The online modes are also a fresh of breath air in an industry that is being swamped with your typical first person shooters. I recommend this game to anyone and everyone that wants to be an unstoppable killing machine.

This happens to be the first game I've owned of the Warhammer 40k franchise, so when it comes to the lore, I am pretty much in the dark. I know War40k is an RTS game and Table-Top game, but it seems that Warhammer40k has come a long way, now spreading out into the action/shooter genre. Does this Space Marine have what it takes to survive the battle? Well let's find out!

GAMEPLAY

Warhammer40k: Space Marines (War40k from this point on), is a game that hits you with action the moment you start it up. There is very little in the way of downtime besides occasional dialog segments, or transitions into new areas. Right off the bat you will be fighting through masses of Orks to reach your object, picking up a variety of weapons along the way(gun and melee) as well as upgrades for these weapons.

The gameplay is very simplistic in War40k, almost too simple at times. You have the ability for ranged attacks using guns, and up close melee attacks with a variety of weapons that you can find throughout the campaign. When enemies get to close you can switch on the fly to your melee weapon of choice and start hacking away. Mix in your "stun" attack occasionally to initiate a variety of stun moves(single target, or AoE). When an enemy is stunned you can initiate a fatality move which produces plenty of blood, a nice death kill animation, as well as granting you health. An interesting, and refreshing way to regenerate your health I think.

Not all is good with this setup though. While the gameplay is fun, there is little variety to it. Within 3-4 hours you will begin to notice that despite a change of melee weapon or switching between guns; you really don't have as much freedom as one might think. Combat is repetitive, though satisfying. Another problem is the lack of a cover system. Taking heavy fire? Only thing you can do is walk behind cover and stand there until it is clear to strafe out. If anything the lack of a cover system hurts the shooting element of the game since intense firefights turn into scrambles to walk behind a box that is as tall as you. Overall the gameplay is enjoyable yet repetitive, but not repetitive enough to turn you off to the game.

GRAPHICS

Graphically this game looks alright. There isn't much in the way of impressive visuals, other than those nice gory fatality moves, but it doesn't really impact the game at all. No frame rate problems or oddities, though it was funny seeing mobs occasionally explode and instantly vanish upon death, rather than a corpse dropping to the ground for a second or two. I'm sure this was done because of the vast # of orks that show up on the screen sometimes. Overall the game is not all that graphically impressive but it does enough to make the trip enjoyable.

SOUND/STORY

Voice acting I found to be pretty good. There was clearly some good effort put into the voices of the characters and logs you find, plus the Orks sound really awesome I think. They remind me a little of the Lord of the Rings Uruk Hai sometimes. Weapon effects sound satisfying and have a good punch to them. As for the storyline, it is honestly hard for me to truly comment on. Being my first Warhammer40k title, it feels like being tossed into season 5 of a 10 season Drama on TV. After a while you pick up the gist of things yet still feel a bit confused. The story flushes out well, and deals with your character, Captain Titus, leading an assault to prevent an Ork invasion from stealing a Battle Titan.

REPLAY/LENGTH

War40k will be at least a good 8-10 hour adventure. The game is broken up into 17 chapters spread out amongst 5 parts. Throw in hidden logs, multiplayer and Co-Op(see below) fans of the genre and gameplay style will have plenty to keep themselves occupied with.

** CO-OP will be added about a month after launch and will be free to those who purchase the game (activate their MP pass). From the looks of it, the Co-Op being given out is going to be similar to a horde mode for up to 5 players.

OVERALL 82% (8.2 / B-)

War40k is a good game. It isn't a great game, nor does it try to be a great game. It does exactly what it was intending to do, and that is bring the Warhammer40k universe into a new genre of game. For a first crack at a shooter/hack and slash action game; Relic did a pretty good job I think. While all the elements included in War40k are not 5 star material, they come together nicely making for an enjoyable game that even a noob to the Warhammer franchise (like myself) will have no major problems figuring out what is going on.

Despite some repetitive gameplay; a simple yet fun Multi-player element and the addition of some form of Co-Op, free of charge, help boost War40k into being a game that is worth the purchase if you are a fan of the genre or gameplay style. Repetitive gameplay aside, it can be a lot of fun tearing up waves of orks! 4 stars!

**NOTE: Co-Op will be included in an update slated for October 25th. It will contain 2 maps.. 4 player Co-Op... where you will battle against Ork's or Chaos.

**NOTE: 9/22 Patch released to resolve MP problems for PS3 users. Matchmaking and lag problems have been resolved (finally!)

This game is really a lot of fun. The mix of melee plus ranged combat stands out from the crowd of shooter games. It has the intensity of a zombie game where you hear / see a horde of enemies headed your way, but also gives you some unique challenges. At times you have a horde of orks bearing down on you plus some orks firing ranged weapons at you. This game may well be a sleeper hit, especially amongst a sea of same old, same old shooters that are all about the same.

I enjoy games like Dawn of War, the older Age of ... games, Warcraft, etc. I couldn't pass this game up knowing that it is part of the Warhammer universe. While there is nothing new here, it is a fun diversion while waiting for something bigger to come along.

The game feels similar to the Gear of War layout. You play with an over-the-shoulder view and charge down linear paths obliterating everything in your way. Unlike Gears, SpaceMarine has no duck-and-cover system. You are constantly in the open and vulnerable to attack increasing the challenge of the game. While I have heard of some people not agreeing with this system, it seems appropriate to me. SpaceMarines are proud, honorable machines. They charge in and annihilate, not hide and wait.

The game is decent in length probably lasting around 6-8 hours. Considering the game style this is average. There really is little to no replay value.

If you're a fan of hack and slack, run and gun, fast paced games I would recommend checking this out. As said before, there's nothing new here but it is a cheap and fun game while you wait for something else to come along.

For serious fighting game fans, a decent stick is a key part of your arsenal. However, the parts and construction generally used to make up consumer-grade sticks, especially in the US where Arcades are more or less dead, have almost universally been of sub-par quality when compared to the real thing you find attached to arcade cabinets.

This makes sense, of course. Arcade components are designed to withstand full-scale assaults every day all day; it's a safe assumption that something bought for home use isn't going to go through the kind of abuse you'd expect an arcade machine to go through. On top of that, constructing something out of industrial-strength arcade parts ain't cheap. Who's going to pay over $100 for a game controller?

Well, as it turns out, a lot of people. Left with no other solution, fighter fans who want the genuine article have traditionally turned to simply making their own sticks. You buy the parts from a japanese manufacturer like Sanwa or Seimitsu, plot out where the holes are going to go on a chunk of wood, and drill and solder and screw your way to perfection. This approach, however, is expensive, time consuming, and requires some level of expertise to pull off correctly.

The other approach was to wait for a Japanese company to produce one of their factory sticks (usually in extremely limited numbers), put them up for sale in Japan, and pay through the nose to import. While this was a lot easier than buying your own parts, you always wound up paying some kind of premium. $200+ was not uncommon to own one of these things.

We're at the point now, however, where the industry has gotten large enough that you can just up and buy these things on Amazon.com now. My sincere recommendation, if you're at all interested in owning a stick, is that you bite the bullet and shell out the money for a good one. Once you pass a certain threshold in quality with these sticks, you enter the realm of specialized consumer electronics that are made to specifications without regard to your average user.

The HRAP3 is one such stick. This thing is designed from the ground up with the assumption that the only people who are going to buy it are serious connoisseurs, so damn the price, let's make it properly.

If you're not a SERIOUS serious stick person and are just getting into the swing of things, here's all you need to know: This is one of the best high-end sticks money can buy, and it will last you a decade or more. These are extremely durable, very responsive, and have a very well-defined functionality about them that you won't get from cheaper products. Yeah, they're expensive, but honestly? You're getting your money's worth and that will become apparent the instant you use this stick. Buy it, be happy.

As an aside, this stick has a USB lead and will also work with your PC out of the box (just hold the HOME button for 5 straight seconds upon plugging it in). This is absolutely perfect for emulators like MAME, or any other PC game you wish to play with an arcade stick.

That out of the way...

Okay, let's assume you're a serious stick person. Here's a more in-depth rundown:

The stick itself is a Sanwa with a square gate, and the buttons are all Hori. This isn't bad, but the good news is that they're all attached with a quick-detach lead and can be popped loose with a screwdriver easily, no solder required. If you want to go the serious route and swap the buttons for Sanwa and the stick for Seimitsu, this stick will let you do it pretty easily. Google has many picture tutorials to do this.

I replaced the gate with a Sanwa Octagon (I like Sanwa sticks but a lot of people prefer Seimitsu) and all the buttons with Sanwa. It took about 10 minutes and was completely painless.

If you do this, you have a stick that is officially on par with the Street Fighter IV TE stick (also made with all Sanwa parts) and the special import-only editions of the HRAP, but it is much cheaper to buy this one and do a little surgery than buy the factory-stock ones that come with Sanwa. This is a lovely medium ground between building your own and buying a factory made one; you get some level of customization, you're saving a little money, and you're still getting full-on arcade quality. Go for it.

I hope this review helped!

Street Fighter II HD Remix, and Street Fighter IV have fueled the fire for fighting games again and people are once again looking for a good quality stick. For the money, you can't beat this stick. All of you searching for an arcade quality joystick without breaking the bank can look here. The Hori Real Arcade Pros were easily over $120 in Japan so this is a bargain. It uses a Sanwa joystick which is one of the best if not the best quality joystick around. It uses buttons which are made by Hori which are a tad spongy to me, but the beauty of this stick id that you can easily swap them out for Sanwa or Seimetsu buttons if you want a true arcade unit in your home. Sanwas can take millions of presses.

For the average person, this stick will be more than fine, for the hardcore fighter, this stick will serve as a base for upgrading. Being a Japan stick, you get the ball type stick rather than the typical US baseball bat. WHen I first tried the ball type years ago, I didn't like it. Then I got used to it and it offers a bit more speed and control when playing fighters. I refuse to use anything but the ball type now. Buttons are arranged in the Japan curved arcade cabinet style which again, I prefer now compared to the straight button layout. Add turbo functions for shmups and you've got yourself a fine stick for the price. I personally also have the Sega Virtua Stick High Grades (available only through Japan imported) and those are all Sanwa with a 6 instead of 8 button layout. SImply the best. Second is the Hori here, and about $50 cheaper.

THose looking at the upcoming Street Fighter IV Mad Catz ones...I'm a little weary as Mad Catz doesn't exactly scream quality but supposedly they are all Sanwa Parts as well. I'd hold off until they are out. That and they are sixty dollars more than this. Avoid the cheaper SF IV ones, those are not made with arcade parts and your stick will most likely fail at some point.

Pros:

Curved button layout

Sanwa Japan style ball stick and convex style buttons

Hori quality

Upgradeable buttons

Price

Cons:

Hori Buttons (not a bad thing except for the most hardcore)

Limited availability

So Hori has finally made the Real Arcade Pro 3 available stateside, so no more costly importing!

Believe it or not, this is my first real Arcade Stick. I'm 25 years old and am just now getting into fighters properly. Street Fighter IV was a factor but It's also a genre I've always wanted to get into but never had enough confidence with my skill level nor had the neccessary tools.

So I've finally started to commit myself to develop the skill and understanding the rules for different titles as well as purchasing said tools!

This Arcade Stick is highly regarded for it's build and quality. True as others have stated, it doesn't have the infamous Sanwa Buttons that the special Japan Amazon Edition had or the upcoming (now sold out) SFIV Tournament Stick have, but this is irrelevant at this point to me. I'm just learning and the buttons here are more than good enough.

As listed, it's is USB corded (not wireless), which is about 10ft in length. It's fine for my household though I had to buy an additional USB extension cord for like $3 as I sit about 13ft away from my Tele.

The great thing about it is that it double as a PC stick, so you MAME enthusiasts out there are good to go! I've gone back and started playing the Street Fighter Alpha series as well as SFIII: 3rd Strike. Not to mention it's fun to go and play around with ol' Neo Geo classics like Metal Slug (it's got a turbo function), KoF, Samurai Showdown, etc...

Whether it's in your lap or sitting on a counter or table, it's fantastic and comes highly recommended!

The HRAP 3 is a great stick right out of the box. It has a Sanwa JLF joystick straight from the Japanese arcades and Hori buttons. The only downside to the joystick is the Hori Buttons. They're not very good for fighters (like Street Fighter 3) and feel cheap. Luckily Hori added quick disconnects and you can easily buy new buttons and swap them out with extremely little knowledge. Build quality is great and it has a good weight to it. It works easily and seamlessly with the Playstation 3 and the PC. Just plug it in and it's good to go.

Highly recommended.

There is a drought for arcade sticks, especially with the release of Street Fighter IV. My local game store doesn't have any, and the only ones they do carry when they do have them in, are the Mad Catz ones. Not the Tournament Edition (TE) either. This arcade stick has the exact same size of the Tekken 5 Ultimate Collector's edition for those of you that have that. The only difference is the button layout on the Real Arcade Pro (RAP) is that of traditional Japanese arcade boards. It's not bad in any way, just that it takes time to get acquainted with it.

I've read reviews of this being a "clunky" joystick, which was very surprising as it has Sanwa parts for the joystick unit (Sanwa is the premier arcade parts developer in the world). I suspected that these individuals had never been in an actual arcade. When I got the stick it was like I thought, because the stick is just like the arcades I grew up on. The buttons, however are not Sanwa buttons...to me though, I prefer the Hori buttons. Although Sanwa is reported to have better response, I can't stand the clicking of their buttons (if you depress the button, it will click). For the hard core, you can buy the Sanwa buttons and install them if your at all technically savy (still making it cheaper than the TE by Mad Catz). And as for the reports of the RAP being defective, I've not had a problem at all with mine for over a month.

After a month of research, I concluded this was the arcade stick for me. I trust Hori, it wasn't as expensive as the import version, and anything "better" was outrageously more expensive. Take it from an arcade rat from the 90's, this is the right arcade stick for your fighting games. I've had five friends buy it and they all love it as well.
