As someone who has not purchased many digital "things," I was skeptic of the Playstation Network that came with my brand new Playstation 3. Hence, I went for the 3-month card instead of the 12-month card. The first day after I put in the code, I got a copy of Sam and Max season 3, a 35 dollar value, for free, because it was the Playstation Plus game of the month. Wowzers.

The bad: Buying free games with the Playstation Plus cards are actually rentals of said games. If I got a free game on the same day that I got my 3-month Playstation Plus card, it's actually a 3-month rental of the game, that could be extended from a 3 months rental to a 15 months rental if I buy a 12 month Playstation Plus card (50 bucks) in the next three months. If I bought another 12 months, say, 12 months from now, the "due dates" for these rentals would extend another 12 months, turning rentals into pretty much the same as a purchase. Games bought with a 1 to 99 percent discount in the Playstation Plus store don't expire when your Playstation Plus card expires, so that's good. The discount applies to a handful of games every month, all of them popular and worth a look.

The good: You get several games picked out of a hat for you per month. What you get:

-one playstation 3 game per month, in the 15-35 dollar range, for free. For me, the games are always at least decent, at best highly addictive.

one playstation 1 game per month, worth 6 bucks in the playstation store, for free. These are usually popular, such as Spyro, Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, etc. In the last 6 months, only one has been lame (Crash Team Racing).

two Playstation "minis", which are video games worth 2-3 bucks in the playstation store, for free. You get about 1-10 hours of fun from these, depending on how addicted you are.

a medley of free things: playstation 3 themes, wallpapers, avatars, exclusive beta testings, and sometimes an extra free game. The NHL center ice player is free, but it costs over a hundred bucks to get a season pass.

Several video game companies will give you the same discount on the same game every month.

Several discounts on an ever-changing assortment of video games every month. This is the best part. I've spent a 20 dollar playstation card every month picking up these goodies. These cards have saved me over a hundred dollars in video games from these discounts.

So basically, twelve months of this nets you about 200 bucks worth of video games that you would like for free. There's always tons of discounts on top of this, usually 50 percent off something popular.

If you purchase anything from a discount, you still have it if your playstation plus account expires. The discounted games appear to be picked at random and are different every month.

I'm giving this 4 stars because the 12 month card is clearly a better bang for your buck, and I wish I got that instead. A+

Edit 2012: As of E3 2012 PS1 games and minis have been discontinued as mandatory benefits, making this service nonsense for anybody who owns a PlayStation Portable but not the Playstation 3. Minis could continue to come out at a very slow pace but PS1 games are done. It appears that in most months now THREE bonus PS3/PSN games appear. Also, the benefits now include soundtracks to to Datura and Starhawk but with no easy path to find them through the PlayStation store. There's more DLC out there that are discounted towards PlayStation Plus members, and a library of 60 minute free trials to disk-based games.

OVERALL

The playstation plus plan is not for everyone. However it is a plan that rewards its subscribers with plenty of perks and loads of content each month. If you think about it, at $4-$6/mo and a free $10-$15 game each month in theory the subscription pays for itself each month, not even factoring in all the other perks like the free full game demos. While the $17.99 card is not the best deal, it makes a great card to experience Playstation PLUS for 3 months without laying out too much money.

Oh yes it does look better than Gears but plays a lot different. Think of this as Gears meets Unreal Tournament 2004 but with many modifications, additions and tweaks.

Here is my review of the Good, the bad, and "Ugly" on all about this game...

First... The Good:

The most noticeable thing is the graphics and sounds are un-freaking-believable! Look at this game and then look at Halo 3 and you will laugh at what Bungie considers next gen graphics. Whatever? THIS is next gen graphics. Best looking game on the PS3 system by far. Why didn't SONY hype this game is beyond me? It is THEIR Gears or Halo 3 for the system. What people say is true. Gears of War meets UT2004 is exactly how it looks, feels and sounds. Just to let everyone know that I am not a PS3 fanboy and I own both systems. I love Halo 3, Gears of War, Call of Duty 4 and the like. I am just reporting on my opinions between them. They all have something for everyone to enjoy. If you like fast FPS games in the tradition of Quake with fun vehicles but with truly next gen graphics than this game is for you.

This game has cool looking characters with exchangeable armor, vests, boots, helmets etc... like Halo 3 has. All the characters have a Gears "look" and the vehicles all have a Gears style to them. Some of the alien buildings have alien tentacles inter-woven into them and pulsate in and out. The distant vistas are really awesome and distracting and it even has the volumetric lighting that Halo 3 has. The shadow lighting is done very well. The quality in the graphics is just unbelievable and really shows off what the PS3 can do. I can't wait to see it on 360 to compare them.

No lag when I played except on just one server I played on. When I switched to a different one it ran great the whole time I played. just depends on who you are connecting to I guess.

UT3 controls really well with a PS3 controller. I was fragging in minutes with no problems. You can even select servers with no keyboard/mouse allowed to keep it fair.

Weapons overall seem stronger and have more punch. All the "hold to charge" up the weapon to release (like on the big truck in UT2004) has been removed except for the rocket launcher. The Truck has a laser on the back that just shoots normal like a turret and no charging is necessary.

Good change to the anti-vehicle Avril rocket launcher: The rocket launcher that you use to shoot down vehicles has limited ammo of like 5 shots or something. Thank god. In the old UT2004 it was annoying that you can fire off practically unlimited rocket ammo at the enemy with almost no way to avoid getting shot if you were in a vehicle. Now you can hide and hope they run out of rockets after a few shots. You are warned when being locked on and can see the laser pointer line from where it is coming from so you can fight them with your vehicle if you want. In UT2004 you never really knew where the rocket was coming from.

Sniper riffle works really well and they removed the lame laser/Lightning riffle. I killed 5 people in a row the first time I used it. Any Sniper fan will like this weapon.

I has new cooler weird vehicles! Twice as many as 2004. There are new vehicles to use and they all have a secondary weapon or feature on them. Some have cool additions like a turbo speed boost feature on the jeep. Some that stand out are the tentacle alien vehicles that look like they are strait out of "The Matrix". There is a flying alien vehicle that looks like a tentacle squid (alla Matrix) and another one that crawls on the ground like a spider-octopus. You can turn into a ball and roll over guys running on the ground, bounce around with the jump button then unfold back to an octopus of death again at will. Really fun vehicles all over the place. There are a bunch of other cool vehicles but I won't go into all of them but most of them are really fun to use.

A really cool new addition is the new hover board that will remind you of Back to the Future 2. Everyone has this available at spawn and you can't loose it. You just press the square button and you're off! If you are near a vehicle you can also just press square and boom you enter the vehicle. All the controls feel right and are easy to use.

On the board you move about twice as fast as running and can jump and even do tricks like 360s/720s and the like. If you get shot while using it, you will "eat it" and have to get up from the crash and can't shoot until you are all the way up standing upright. This takes a few seconds and it is sort of a penalty for getting shot while zipping by. It is hard to shoot people when they are on it sometimes so it feels good to see them eat it when you do. Looks really funny watching people slam face first into the floor when you shoot someone zipping by on a hover board.

When you use the hover board you can't shoot but you can use an auto targeting "Laser Tether" to any vehicle near you (that is on your team) if you press the shoot button. This is really fun and it speeds up your movement as fast as the connecting vehicle is going. So if a hover Manta flys by, you can shoot your laser tether on him and start flying over the terrain like a water skier (on land). If the vehicle stops, you can move forward to the side and zip by really fast like a sling shot and detach your tether to get killer speed.

While in hover board mode and you jump off something that is really high you will always crash land so you can't just use it and move anywhere you want without consequence. I love the new hover board addition. You won't get angry when people take all the vehicles and you need to get to a node really fast. Now you can just hitch a ride with the tether and hover board. All aboard!

The Jeep (with blades) has a cool new feature where you can turbo into a group of enemies and press the square button to power eject out of it. You fly 100 feet in the air and down below the jeep will PLOW into the bad guys without slowing down and then explode upon impact with pieces flying everywhere killing anyone that gets hit by it. VERY cool.

New really cool addition is the Power Node Ball that changes linking nodes strategies. It will help a team that is losing have a chance at a comeback if all the nodes are taken.

When the game starts, a node ball appears in a little generator near the core. If you take the ball you can't get into a vehicle but you can still use the hover board. This Node Ball will make ANY captured node change to your team's node if you run over the node beam while it is in your hands.

If the node isn't captured yet and you run under the node (with the ball) the node will become yours without having to capture it with the link beam. If you see a bad guy running up onto your node a computer voice will warn you that an enemy is approaching with one. If you kill him the ball will fall to the ground and a 25 second countdown ticker appears over it. If it counts down to zero the ball re-appears at their base. If another bad guy runs over it he can still pick it up. OR if you want you can go over to it and press the square button to sacrifice your life and destroy the ball so they have to start all over from the main base with a new ball. This new node ball addition will make some really crazy game sessions back and forth.

There is a new stealth vehicle tank that as soon as you enter it, it disappears. It drives kind of slow but you can drive it into an enemy base undetected or take it to a node to add defense to your node area. Once you press the deploy, it un-stealth's (can be seen) unfolds and you have a mine layer and a large time displacement force Jell-O field thing. You can deploy this thick Jell-O wall over a node and anyone that walks into it will walk super slowly. All bullets or rockets or even vehicles that touch or go though this wall will slow down super slow. This reminds me of the force field suits from Dune. You can use this to create a choke point in a hallway or defend a node. This is a cool defense to keep your node alive for a little longer if it is being attacked since rockets or bullets will move so slowly while in it.

The graphics on the Power Core at your base looks even better. It looks like the power generator from Spiderman 2. As you shoot it, protective cover panels break off the surrounding energy core ball (like Tron) and looks really cool. When you finally destroy it, parts of junk and parts will get sucked in as the ball gets bigger and then explode just like spiderman 2. Cool visual.

The Bad:

I hate online multiplayer games on the PS3 since no one uses a headset. For all the time I played UT3 online I NEVER heard anyone say a thing. None of the other people outhere on the PS3 network has a damn headset and the UT game supports it. Thank god that the game has a computer voice that tells everyone where they should be and what node is being attacked and such. It helps, but there needs to have communication when playing. If the 360 is as good as this version I will def go and use that one instead.

Also Epic made it a "press right directional pad" to talk (alla warhawk and Halo 3) instead of just talk when you want like Gears. I hate that.

Since this game is so new there is hardly anyone playing right now. There was only like 8 servers online to play with last night. Small amount for a new game. This will change in the next few weeks when more people get it.

Okay now the Ugly.....

There is nothing Ugly in this game. One of the best looking games of this type out there if not the best.

Other than that I like the game a lot and is a really fun multiplayer game. Call of Duty 4 is a blast but if you want a game with furrious action and fun vehicles this is the best place to play. Sorry Halo 3.

The Unreal Tournament series has been around for years. Generally having a welcome home on PC's the third incarnation works on changing that. Unreal Tournament 3 is a beautiful and fast paced shooter that has been perfectly ported over to the Playstation 3 console.

From the very get go this game gives you several different options. I want to cover all of these so you can become more familiar with what you want out of the game. Many look at the Unreal Tournament as an online only style shooter. I will tell you that it is much more than that.

The game actually has a story based mode. This is little less on the story and generally a great way to get people into the game and familiar with the game modes. So if you are expecting an involved story you should probably go elsewhere. You get all the difficulty settings from casual to very hard. For someone like me who has never played Unreal Tournament I played casual to get more familiar with the game. One thing I can say after playing the story for several hours it is not simple on any level. The A.I. is actually excellent giving me more of a challenge than I ever expected.

Next the game has instant action where you can go from death match to team death match and the other true favorites like capture the flag. There are other game types available also. This instant action is played against the bots who provide plenty of competition. This is also another great way to improve your skills before you take on the real competition.

Now is the most interesting part and that is the online. This game provides an almost seamless online experience as you can take on 15 others in some matches. What keeps this game fresh is the incredible amount of maps that never get old. The game modes also provide for frantic fun. The game play is incredibly fast paced which is unlike any shooter I have ever played.

If you are looking for a fun sci-fi shooter that is non-stop action then Unreal Tournament 3 should be up your ally. This game has been done perfectly on the PS3. From the incredible graphics to the amazingly quick game play. It's hard not to get addicted to the fun in this game. Shooter fans this game is well worth at least a look if not a purchase.

I never write reviews...but here's my 2 cents.

This is probably the first mature title for the PS3 since its launch. By 'mature' I am not talking about content rating but the quality of this game. It seems that this is the first title post launch of the PS3 that is pushing the console to its limit. Sure, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is an awesome game but I don't think it pushes the box to its limits.

Thanks to this game, I will have to stop playing the quite enjoyable COD 4 (and I was getting so close to a promotion!).

My only critical comment about this game is that the multiplayer match-up will still need a little time to build up users...but I am very confident that this will probably not be an issue a month from now.

If you like shooters, don't hesitate..get this game now.

Having played the Unreal series only sparingly over the years, I would consider myself somewhat of a noob. I've never been big on online multiplayer, but I have dabbled in it with Warhawk and Resistance. That being said, I think UT3 is helping me become more and more interested in this weird online craze. UT3 is quite astonishing to look at. The environments are beautiful and the textures look about the same as Uncharted and Gears. I would say the graphics are about the same as Gears of War (made by the same developers). The ability to get into a match sometimes takes a while (10 to 20 seconds for me), but if that's fast enough for you then great. The single player campaign is rather weak. There really isn't much of a substantial story, but rather it's more practice for the main event, online multiplayer. This is where UT3 shines. The action is fast and frenetic. The weapons (both primary and secondary fire) are satisfying. I experienced some lag until I fully installed the game on my PS3 (you can either fully install or play from the disc). After installation, everything was smooth sailing. I enjoyed the ability to fully customize my character's appearance (boots, chest plate, helmet, you name it). I'm giving this game 4 stars mainly due to its weak single player campaign. That's my favorite part of FPS's, so I was a little disappointed in UT3's campaign. All in all, it's a great game. It looks and runs great. Do yourself a favor and experience it on a PS3 if you haven't already picked one up (and no, I don't work for Sony).

Do you miss the old days of RPGs? Large character rosters, recurring enemies, sprawling worlds, dialogue that makes little sense at best? Good news! Cross Edge is, for better or worse, the most interesting attempt at a re-invention of the oldschool 8 and 16-bit RPGs that I've seen in years. It also happens to be one of the most addicting, complex but sometimes downright frustrating titles to roll onto a console in recent memory. Let it be said in advance that, despite my scoring a 7 of 10, this is certainly the most fun and most I've played any title with such a score. There's a lot to love here, but a lot of it happens to be flawed as well.

To say Cross Edge, from Nippon Ichi Software (best known for the Disgaea series), appears to be a niche title is an understatement. Not only does it meet 100% of the qualifications of the infamous JRPG formula, but its premise is based on a mashing together of settings and characters from the other titles in the NIS software lineup. In other words, it's a JRPG made up of JRPGs. Confused yet? Good. Oddly, that's part of the appeal here. You could think of the Cross Edge running as the Kingdom Hearts series of NIS. The only notable pitfall with this is that sales are a magnitude of 10 lower than the titles that comprise Square-Enix's set.

You'll be starting your adventure in the usual unknown land with mysterious creatures. In no time flat, you're sucking in new characters to your lineup. A lot of characters, actually. To be precise there are 32 voice actors listed for characters in the end credits, if you'd like some warning as to what's in store. Whether you known the characters in advance or not, you'll find them to all have their quirks. This is backed up with all the goofy dialogue you could ever ask for and a character for every RPG stereotype you can think of. The introduction to the game's combat system and basic mechanics is straightforward and will have you strutting ahead with confidence in your first levels.

Sadly, you'll probably be reconsidering that confidence in a hurry, as the learning curve becomes very steep, very fast. By the time all the game features such as item synthesis and upgrading become available you'll start to get an idea of what you've gotten yourself into. Take however insane you think that is and multiply by about 100, and you'll barely be scratching the surface of everything that's crammed on to this game. Speaking of said features, they're accessible at 'Save Points' around the map. I only mention the name specifically because, ironically, they're not where you save your game (you can do this anytime you're on the open world map), but it is where you do your business including the incredibly important revival of dead characters. Though you can revive them mid-battle, if combat ends with them KO'd you'll need to pay to have them healed here.

You certainly don't need to dive right into synthesis, but it will become a necessary evil as you move along. The usual reaction to this is "can't I just buy everything at the shop?". The answer is no, no you can't. You start out with only a very limited number of things you can buy and the only way to lengthen this list is via crafting it so it will appear for later purchase. Although this doesn't apply to all items (such as special weapons with unique traits), it does work for all the incredibly important medicines so that you'll have a constant supply of them if needed. If you'd like a further demonstration of how important synthesis can become, the later gear available to you can only be made using a combination of existing items combined with items dropped from monsters and items you receive from converting your old gear. Yikes. Seriously, I don't know how to accurately describe it all. The tutorials are acceptable, but no matter what you're trying to make you'll be handed a screen loaded from edge-to-edge with numbers representing different stats of the item in question. The frightening thing about this isn't so much that you're given this much info, but that all the numbers actually mean something and are something you'll have to keep track of.

In case just synthesis wasn't enough for you, there are also three very important ways to enhance the equipment you already have. Double yikes. One is to use 'EP' (one of no less than 8 types of 'points' you'll have to follow) to upgrade items between levels 1 and 5. Generally speaking this is a cheap and effective way to improve your performance, as a level 5 older item will outperform something several tiers higher. Second, you can use some of the items dropped by monsters in combat to supplement the stats of your gear. Each piece of equipment has a certain point balance which dictate how much upgrading you can do via items, and one of the eventual benefits to synthesis is that the point allowance can be much larger if you can create a high-quality item (again, using items dropped from monsters as material). Lastly, equipment has a certain number of slots that you can equip a bonus skill in. These are mostly the RPG-standard things like HP regeneration and attack bonuses, though there are dozens total. Unsurprisingly, these traits are not handed to you either, and it requires upgrading a piece of equipment to level 5 and then "converting" it in order to make it into a skill you can place on something else. Triple yikes.

The other major feature Save Points is the "Database" menu, which is something quite unique to Cross Edge. Here you can earn extra loot via earning Titles (basically mini-quests or monster hunting), and your discovery of treasure and plot events along the way will unlock costumes for everyone. Equipping a costume will change the stats of your characters in one way or another, either increasing or decreasing certain attributes. If you'd like to keep things simpler, there is at least one generic "add HP and little else" costume for everyone which can make obtaining these rather important. As a very JRPG-ish feature, equipping a costume on a female character changes their appearance on menus and in cutscenes. Thankfully, the most ridiculous of costumes such as swimsuits change stats such that they're impossible to leave equipped for combat and will keep your perverted mind at least a bit in check.

Wandering the world map isn't the standard you'll see in most other games. Most of note is the random encounter warning device, which is color ranging from blue and green to red when it's time to fight something. The farther you walk the more the color changes. Although untraditional and nonsensical, it's actually an awesome feature. Even better, if you deliberately want to fight something during exp grinding or the like, you can force a fight by pressing R1. No longer do you need to spin around in circles waiting for something to smack you in the face. Good times. While walking around you'll be searching for "Souls" (explained in the storyline), which take the form of treasure for you to collect or mark plot events around the map. One somewhat frustrating thing is that, although a lot of these events are optional, some of them you absolutely must find in order to trigger the next main plot event from appearing on the map. It can get tedious, and you will need to re-search earlier areas for new events and treasure after you move on, but doing this actually eliminates the need for substantial exp grind on normal difficulty. Merely searching should keep your levels up and will earn you Titles for the better rewards.

Your eventual opinion of the game will most certainly hinge on what you think of the battle system. It could well add or subtract 2 full points on a scale of 10 to a review score, depending on what you make of it. It's that important. No, wait. It's that COMPLICATED, I mean. In total seriousness, I have old calculus textbooks that are more straightforward than all the depth of battle here. If you peek at some game screenshots you'll get some kind of idea, as you'll note that the character and ability displays take over half the screen. Quadruple yikes. It'll take you many hours to get used to how all the different bars and arrows and numbers work. This is either a really GOOD thing, or really BAD thing, depending on how you like your RPGs. It makes the game a massive turn-off to new or more casual players, but it is massively rewarding to people who sink their teeth into it.

In short (lol?), combat is in the tried-and-true method of standing face-to-face with your foes on a flat plain. In a bit of a throwback to the old front row/back row **** each side of the field is split into a 3x4 grid of places you can stand. This is important to use and you must master positioning to be successful in combat. Depending on the character and the ability you'd like to use they have different ranges and lateral distances, so you need to think ahead to where you want to stand. For example, a member with a sword will need to stand in front to hit targets, but even then may not be able to hit the enemy back row. Your magic users need a minimum distance to cast so they'll have to stand back, but then they might not be able to reach the far targets either. Versus bosses your placement also becomes vital since you want to minimize how many characters the strongest abilities can hit at the same time. It might prevent you from a Game Over, but it makes shifting around for healing more complicated and, uh... sorry. My brain just froze for a second.

On both sides of battle, combat is run via an AP system. You get a certain number of points per turn based on your equipment, its level, your costume, etc.. With it you have up to 8 abilities per character that will become available, each of which have a different AP cost and range/area effects. Each also has a certain attack 'type' (direct, magical, break, etc.), an element attached, a strength designation from I to V, and a skill level you'll increase from 1 to 10. With alllllll this information in hand, combat revolves around skill combinations. There are over 100 different skill effects (yikes) and each has very different requirement in terms of element/type/level needed to use. The only thing that saves you from this insanity is the "Archaic Tomb" in the game. As you collect bits of it along the way, you can view from the menu (or even while in combat) which combinations you can pull off. They're coded by color, meaning you can either perform them immediately, or if you swap characters mid-combat, or if you equip different skills, and... wow. Uh. Ok, my brain is really hurting now. The last thing about combat I'll mention is that there is a very handy Practice Battle feature available from the game menu so you can test out your skills on dummy targets. If you're bored of the long attack animations, pressing L2 will skip the graphic, and this makes combat a lot more tolerable in repeated encounters and longer battles.

The storyline? There's a story? Oh, sorry, my brain was crammed full of combat graphics and numbers and was still overloaded from trying to explain synthesis. But yes there is a storyline, but please don't expect too much from it. Frankly, it's pieced together as well as can be expected given the insane scenario. It has characters from so many different games mixed in with all-new ones in a world setup that can only be stretched so far for it to even be theoretically imaginable instead of completely off-the-wall. In a word, it's "fun", with some level of character development, and some downright entertaining villains. There are rivalries and romances both amongst and between the ally and enemy forces alike, and there are some quite notable one-liners that'll keep you laughing. Did I mention there are Prinnies? No? Well, there are! By definition of how the game world is set up, there are only a maximum number of bosses to face and number of times you can fight them, but this is played out well nonetheless. Actually, I'll expand on the rivalry system. Though it doesn't change anything about combat, there are a lot of one-on-one arguments with certain foes and you are actually required to use the feuded character in your party for some combat. A minor detail but it's at least something different. The bickering can get quite grumpy and there are running gags and teasing flying everywhere.

The variety of characters and villains and how they interact is a major strength in this game, but it is also a substantial pitfall. In the bigger plot scenes, it's almost as though there was something in the contract with the voice actors to get everyone an equal number of lines. The result is very, very confusing (at best) and incomprehensible (at worse) dialogue split amongst literally 20 different people at times. The optional plot events I mentioned above to help and work on smaller group of characters, but depending on when you discover them they can seem entirely out of place and even some of the main story scenes seem to fall out of the sky and make no sense whatsoever. Unless you take the time to actually process what is said and what's going on, hours of story can fly by without really having a clue about a thing.

In closing, I'll mention how much this game caters to the 100%-clear-perfectionist types. Merely accessing the 'best' of the 3 possible endings is a massive amount of work, and as this is the only way to access post-game super-hard content it practically begs repeated plays (which are politely enhanced via the NewGame+ system). Cross Edge has, hands-down, the most ridiculous PSN trophy set put together to-date, and will take the most advanced of players with complete walkthroughs in front of them hundreds upon hundreds of hours to work out. They're so ridiculous I'm starting to think names of the people insane enough to go for the Platinum should be put up on a billboard. Seriously. It's just insane.

There's a lot of fun to be had here, and I've become quite addicted in working toward total completion. So why the meh score? Where the flaws and frustrations are here, they are really hard to get over. The finer points of synthesis and combat feel like flying a 747 as much as playing a game. Deaths are very common and you'll learn to be saving constantly. Even if you play things very well, instances of bad luck can kill you out of nowhere. Difficulty can be manic, with some tasks seeming impossible. Grind can be absolutely terrible on higher difficulty levels and the process of leveling is tied far too much with how quickly you can kill bosses, as they give more than half your total EXP and you get bonuses (from -50% to +1000%) based on speed. To get at all the features or even all the normal story scenes you MUST have a game guide. Just too many teeth-grinding issues to keep the score up. If the menus could be simplified, items and skills easily referenced, and some of the monster AI tweaked it could go a VERY long way to a better score, but even then the game certainly doesn't scream out as something truly special. Other reviews of Cross Edge have been incredibly harsh, and I wanted to put together something that at least tried to look from the bottom-up instead of the top-down.

Please do not listen to anybody who plays a game for 3 hours then writes a review about it.

The depth in this game is amazing! I have been yearning for a good classic style RPG on the PS3 for a long time now and this satisfies my every need.

As far as the "clunky" menu, I have no idea what the above reviewer is doing who supposedly is some kind of expert playing RPG's (pshhh). The menus are SIMPLE and pretty straight-forward after 10 minutes of gameplay. There are functions later on that become more useful, but I really cannot say the menus are bad.

You CANNOT play a game of this depth for THREE hours and then review it. There's 100's of hours of gameplay, tons of weapons and armor, hidden items, hidden characters, and you're going to write a review after THREE FREAKING HOURS?

I did not give this game 5 stars because it does not make use of the PS3's next-gen system in terms of graphics and audio. However, this game absolutely proves that a solid gameplay system, incredible depth and wonderful characters make a game, not the visuals. My only gripe is I wish I could skip the movies because should I choose to replay it, they take forever (press start button to auto-forward)

To add to this review, even more hours into it, I understand why some people may not like it, but some reviews sound more like sour grapes and attacks rather than objective reviews. There are drawbacks to it which a lot of reviews have harped on already.

To give more detail though, as far as why I enjoy the game:

1. Battle System Wonderfully implemented in my opinion. I hate, hate, hate the new style of "action" rpg's where it's basically Tomb Raider with RPG elements, ala Phantasy Star for the PSP. I also got tired of having forever to choose your actions as there was a sense of drama and suspense missing there. The gameplay system here is fast paced enough with the combo timer to keep me interested. I was also relieved to not have to run around and mash buttons like an action game.

2. The depth There's just too much stuff here to discover and probably has overwhelmed people to the point that they don't like the game. There is a huge amount of combos, synth items and immeasurable ways to upgrade items through the composite function. Some people may loathe the depth, some people may love it, like me.

Give this game a chance, do not base your review on one simple-minded baby who gave up and said "whaaah, I'mma bash this game on Amazon because I'm not a God in this game three hours into it". If a reviewer has a negative opinion of this game, see whether or not he is objective or just sounds spiteful. I realize that there are always going to be different opinions about games, but good and bad alike, the must be subjective and give reasons. You would not take this seriously if all I wrote was "THIS GAME IS SOOOO AWESOME, GET IT!!!!"

UPDATE: I am going to add this as I realize I have come off as attacking the negative reviewer and apologize for that. I just felt the first review was written by a spiteful person who decided to not invest the time necessary to form an opinion on a deep RPG, which I felt is what and RPG should be. My apologies for any inappropriate comments. I have left my review intact instead of editing it as I do not want to change it based on comments, but realize that the tone may have gotten out of hand.

Do you love grinding? How about having 5 different menus just for the items? Or having to figure out how to actually use the several different skills each of the 30 or so characters in the game can learn? And then having to see which of those skills can be combined? Or how about having to learn the best way to synthesize items for the best weapons? And then upgrading said weapons to make them stronger? And then converting said stronger weapons into raw materials to synthesize better weapons and so on and so on?

Now, you're probably wondering why I would give the game 4 stars after all that rambling. Simple, really. Because I actually like doing all of that. It's been a while since I play an RPG that actually makes me work for the victory. The game does have simple graphics, reminiscent of the SNES era, with static images for the cut scenes. You do get to choose between Japanese or English voice overs. The music, as the graphics, is simple, and repetitive. Don't know why I thought of the old Mega Man games when I first heard the background music...

The game does have a steep learning curve. If you decide to take the plunge, you'll be scratching your head for the first few hours trying to figure out the many nuances of the game and possibly checking game forums for help. But in the end, the game is truly something different and enjoyable.

If you like standard RPG fare, like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, don't bother with the game. However, if you felt like I did and wanted to experience something new, something that makes you remember why you liked this genre in the first place, then by all means pop in the disc and start playing. You just have to be a little open minded and have a little patience.

Okay, first off let me say that I have NOT finished the game yet. However, I can say that I am having a lot of fun with it. This game recieves a lot of flak for having "bad quality." The people saying this obviously do not know the kind of style this game is going for. Mana Khemia, Ar Tonelico, and of course, Disgaea, all use this type of stylized spriting combined with character art. It enhances the artistic quality of the game. Anyway, this is all aesthetics. It has nothing to do with actual gameplay, and anyone who refuses to play a game based on aesthetics is not a good judge of quality. Moving on---

The gameplay is fluid and fastpaced. Formation adds depth. The Skill system makes battles streamlined. The battles are fast. The game is hard, but not too difficult. It does suffer from a steep curve, enemies getting very strong, very quickly, however this could just be based on my own play style.

The soundtrack is great. The voice acting is excelent.

Please give this game a chance!

I have played RPG games for quite some time and I prefer the likes of Final Fantasy, Xenosaga and other traditional JRPGs. Cross Edge fits that mold and once you get over the learning curve it is quite fun.

Admittedly not having a strategy guide, a great manual or a decent in-game tutorial/help was a bit frustrating at first but I played on. I still have a number of unanswered questions but overall I am happy with the game. The points I just made makes an already challenging game that much more difficult but it isn't like there aren't comparable games out there that have a steep learning curve.

This game requires some thought about who to keep in your party under certain circumstances which is good because what's an RPG without strategy. If you aren't properly leveled up expect to have someone in your party die from time to time as the enemy overwhelms you.

There are a number of characters, weapons and abilities to develop. There are over 100 combos as well as other secrets that will be revealed later in the game. Most of which are unknown to me right now because of the lack of information out there!

I won't speak to the graphics because this is an RPG.

Anyway that's it. I hope this helps. I'l try to update my review after I've played the game for a while longer.

Just received my copy of the game and played it for about two hours.

If you were a fan of EDF 2017 and are waiting for the reviews to come in before deciding whether to buy the game, then wait no more.

Quick points:

It is faithful to the "original". Big insects, giant robots, big explosions, and you can blow up buildings.

The graphics is on par with the original.

2-player Co-op mode is in tact.

You can now choose different troop types with different abilitiese.g. flight, or shields, or automated gun turret.

Weapons and abilities can be upgraded with credits obtained from battle.

When you get killed, a fellow troop will run up to you and revive you, and similarly you can revive them.

Ants can now tip cars at you.

Ticks will jump on your back and bite.

Online gameplay is quick and easy to start up.

And yes, your troops chant "EDF EDF".

Now that I've finished the game here are some after thoughts:

There are a total of 3 chapters each with 5 missions. So it's pretty short.

The game is still true to EDF.

The terrain is unfortunately not as diverse as 2017. Everything takes place in the city. I miss the subterranean levels in 2017.

Chapter 3, Mission 4 with the giant mother-ant is probably my favorite mission.

The ending was a bit disappointing. Would really have liked to take out the mothership. But I am assuming that will happen in the add-on content to purchase, or in the sequel.

I found the Flying character to be the most useful. His speed lets you evade most enemies, including the annoying ticks. Plus you can go UP if you are really in trouble.

I would probably play it again on a greater difficulty level and to get to play with the more powerful weapons.

Still a good mindless game after a long day at work.

How can you go wrong? You kill tons and tons of bugs with tons and tons of weapons. There's 15 missions overall, but each one last a good 30 minutes so you'll get a lot of time from this game. Plus you'll want to replay it over and over again to get all the different upgrades for your four different armor classes as well as try to collect all the different guns this game offers.

If story mode gets stale (which it won't) jump into a survival game with up to 5 other EDF and try to survive wave after wave of bugs and giant robots.

It's hard to go wrong with this game, especially since it's only $40. You'd be hard pressed to find another game with as much content for little price.

**PLEASE NOTE that I did not play this game in single player mode, nor did I try the online multiplayer mode, although both are offered in this game. This review is only for the 2 player, local co-op split screen mode.**

Most retail games nowadays take themselves very seriously, so every once in a while, it's nice to play something that reminds you of why we play games in the first place...to have fun. Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon eschews everything else and gets right down to the core of this fundamental aspect of gaming. The game invites you to grab a friend, grab some guns, and shoot everything you see in this arcade-styled shooter. And it really is great fun!

This is a game that was produced on a modest budget (which is thankfully reflected in its retail price) so one should not expect this game to have the bells and whistles of many other games of this generation. The graphic fidelity isn't very high, the sound can get glitchy during moments of intense action, and the production values overall are a tad constrained. But once you get into this game, none of that matters (more on that later). There are two modes here, the campaign, which offers 15 hefty missions, and a Survival mode, which pits the players against wave after wave of enemies, ala Gears of War's Horde mode and Call of Duty: Black Ops' Zombie mode.

After choosing a class of soldier (four diverse choices are offered) you will enter the mission, where you must accomplish objectives while killing as many enemies as you can. Killing enemies (which consist of a variety of bugs, enemy spacecraft, giant robots, and sometimes hybrids of each of these) gives you points which increase your score, and once your missions are complete, your score is tallied and increases your overall progress through various tiers (aka levels). When you increase a tier, new and more powerful weapons and abilities are opened up to your character. Also, completing missions in the higher difficulty settings adds a multiplier to your score, allowing you to reach the higher tiers faster, which opens up the better weapons. The weapon variety is great and makes experimentation with different weapon loadouts very enjoyable. Also, on the battlefield, certain enemies will drop packages upon death that unlock weapons across all 4 classes. It's all very simple, but it works extremely well, and creates a type of game that you'll always want to come back to and play, even once you've beaten the campaign or battled the seemingly endless waves of enemies in Survival mode.

Playing the game in split screen co-op is great fun. Although you work cooperatively with your partner, at the same time, you are competing a bit for kills, as more kills means more points, which means quicker access to the upgraded weapons. The gameplay can get very chaotic and very thrilling. Environments are destructible, and taking out huge skyscrapers and watching them crumble to the ground to get a better view of enemy spaceships (or for no reason at all) never gets old. There are also mechs, tanks and turrets scattered throughout many of the missions which are great for maximum destruction. As you play the game and things start to get really frenzied, you start to appreciate the fact that the technical aspects of the game aren't so polished, as this allows for some on-screen awesomeness that would surely fry your console if it were a hi-fidelity game. Giant, 300 foot robots smash through buildings like giant wrecking balls with legs. Gigantic spaceships come crashing down to the ground, leaving a trail of destruction that is visceral and blood-pumping.

The game sets out to do exactly what it intends to do....which is let the player get some great weapons, shoot some bad guys, cause some destruction on a massive scale, and have a ton of fun in the process. This is nothing that will stimulate your intellect or change your perspective on the possibilities of video games. But if you are looking for a game that will give you many hours of great, destructive fun with a friend, Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon does more than fit the bill.

awesome game BUT WAIT, edf 2017 is a lot better in some ways. this game has only a fraction of the levels. about 13, which suck because if your like me and want the big guns, then your going to have to mole through hours and hours and hours of the same levels to level up you character to get them, and thats if you can afford them. the character classes are great, although the trooper class acts like a medic yet holds no special ability to even hold one extra medkit, you just run faster and revive fallen mates faster, but seeing how the other classes have special abilities like laying down turrants and using a electrified shield and even flying, this class holds nothin, but other then that its fun, ive played it on and off for like 2 years. im waiting for the original series to come out call efd2024, which should be a lot better then this.

It has been a year now since I've used this on my PS3 controller and it's still holding up. Does funny thing. When I have it charging and I turn off my ps3 the controller will turn it back on and some of the buttons I have to push hard for them to work.

The delivery was a little long and the days get longer when you only have one controller with two people but overall the controller works fine however, it takes longer to connect with the ps3 than the original controllers do. The red finish is a little brighter IRL than the picture shows but I was pleased with the price.

It's not really like most steel cases because of the fact that it has an almost "glossy" paint finish (which appears to scratch off easily). Another kinda thing i could nitpick about is that lightning's face IS the front cover and the ff13 logo is the back which just seems kinda backwards to me but its not a big deal. The Devil May Cry franchise has long been one of my favorites. The games hold a special place in my heart and memory, they were the most cathartic way to get rid of frustration and anger in my angst-filled teen years. Now even as an adult I enjoy popping in one of the originals and battling demons for an hour or two with the wise-cracking Dante. I was in love with the story, riddled with holes as it was, and helplessly in love with Dante.

Upon hearing that the current DMC universe was being abandoned you could not find anyone else more upset about it than I was. I was angry and felt betrayed by Capcom, who were cutting short a story I had spent years in. The new Dante character design was bad, his attitude was at best childish. Stubborn as I am, months turned into a year and I began to realize that change was indeed needed. Ninja Theory seemed to be at least listening to what the fans were saying and with the release of the first player footage my mind began to slowly turn from general hatred of the game to feeling that maybe it would not be so bad.

So, last Friday I decided to just march into Gamestop and pick it up despite my reluctance. After being somewhat shocked that I, a human of the female variety, was buying DmC for myself (he even asked), the Gamestop manager told me that it would be worth it. I got it home, loaded it up, and never looked back.

It has only been one weekend and I have managed to complete it, but this should only be a testament to how amazingly fun this game is. I love the combat, the game levels are works of art in and of themselves, and the story appears to be coherent enough to follow. I could not have asked for a better re-boot. If it had to be done, which it did, Capcom was right to do it this way.

The manager at Gamestop was right when he told me it is no different than the old one. It is updated for modern times but still holds true to the vision that the original had. Though I have to admit that I went into the game expecting something completely different, I was happily surprised to see how much of it was still the same. It is a complete re-do, the slate is wiped clean, and I think that lends to it a certain amount of success. They could have taken it to a whole new direction and done terribly, but sticking with what they know how to do really helped maintain the integrity of the franchise.

Characterization is really great this time around. The dev team really used the most of this generation's console power to use body language and facial expression in order to tell just as much story in a characters appearance as in their dialogue. If a character is barely keeping insanity under the surface, you can tell. If a character is hurt, sad, happy, pensive or just plain bored it can be read in the facial expressions. This makes the new Dante and Vergil duo have depth to them that the originals never really could have achieved. Sure, we love them in DMC3, but Capcom painted themselves into a corner, giving neither of them a real personality. It is safe to say they fixed that issue this time around.

Now that I have said all of that, there are a couple of things that did not do as well:

First off, while the story arc appears to be less hole-filled than the original, there are still points in the plot that had me thinking that either something was missing or they did not explain thoroughly enough. It did not detract from game-play, I knew what was happening and why Dante was doing something, the motivation for the story never really slowed down. It does leave a lot of questions unanswered but the last scene is essentially a guarantee for a sequel. All-in all as far as storytelling goes, it is not the best, but point to a DMC that has good storytelling in the first place. I feel that it is excusable because the designers were tasked with taking a series with a story and a fan base, and making it completely new while at the same time having to make a game that newcomers would enjoy. Perhaps if they were not so overburdened in that area the plot would have gone over better.

Second, the camera. Good lord the camera.

It was not so incredibly bad that I noticed it all the time. But particular enemies, specifically ones that can teleport around the battlefield, made it frustrating. There is no lock-on feature, the game automatically does that for you based on whatever Dante is facing. But, the camera will always pan around to where an enemy is located. So you can imagine that if your one enemy is disappearing and reappearing all over the place the camera gets a bit frustrating. This and a couple of times I just wanted to run away from enemies and would manually pan the camera around only to have it revert back to looking toward the enemies. This caused me to fall off a cliff into the abyss a couple of times. Luckily if that happens you just come right back with some of your health bar missing. Again, this really didn't hurt game play too much. Only after I noticed it the first time did I really start paying attention to it.

Neither of these things really upset me enough to give it a 4 star. This is a 5 star game.

Altogether this game was immense fun and I can see myself playing it just as much as I have the others. There is plenty of room in the maps to get yourself a bit lost while looking for souls to free or keys to secret mission doors. There are, in usual Devil May Cry fashion, multiple difficulty settings and rewards for beating them. Many demon slayings and a couple of interesting plot-twists later I have found a new favorite game.

DmC is the reboot of the Devil May Cry series by Ninja Theory. It is intended to direct a franchise in a new direction and gain a broader audience. I had no cons about the ideas behind the revitalizing of the series & its mythos, but merely with the execution of the ideas.

PRESENTATION: Very Good. The artistic story telling is fantastic in the game, as well as the in game text to amplify some action scenes. Menu has framerate issues but well laid out and simple to see.

GRAPHICS: Good. Environment immerses the player into it and framerate is fluid to follow the action. The game overuses the orange / red color palette as well as the green / blue one which tends to saturate the world you are in after a couple of hours into the game.

SOUND: Very Good. The soundtrack in the game is great and it delivers the theme of the game quite nicely. The voice acting is well done too, you can tell the brothers apart when they speak but also sense their relation...Mundus also delivered an impact performance. Sound effects are also very good but at times overwhelmed by the soundtrack.

GAMEPLAY: Good. Heavily hindered by the level design, the gameplay mechanics are seamless, very well rounded and easy to implement. The amount of combos stretches as far as your imagination can, switching between Devil & Angel weapons is fast and fluid and the controls are quick and responsive. The pacing of the game is questionable for an action game, specially for one with such a deep combo system. The camera is good and user controlled for the most part and even pauses enemies from attacking you if they are off screen. The Devil Trigger suspends enemies into the air this time around while you inflict damage. As usual some health regenerates and there is increased damage.

LEVEL DESIGN: Poor. This is where all the bad spots of the game came back to. The traversal through the game is mainly compromised by jumping. EVERYWHERE. It became tedious after seeing how much it consisted to go through a level, and it broke the pacing of the game considerably, since some areas there was just too much of it. Overall Limbo is designed somewhere out of the Deconstructivism movement, where things are broken parts of themselves and the pieces make up an ugly whole. The best level design for me was the Disco level, and something I'd revisit, weird boss and all. The environments turn dull towards the end, slowing the adventure down. One of the Boss fights implements the platforming quite well, and that probably was as far as it should have been taken to make up the level design.

STORY: Good. The new direction that they deviated the original storyline from was well implemented. Dante and Vergil being sons of a Demon & Angel, some type of anomaly that can extinguish evil is a believable storyline to start from. The explaining of their origin was engaging as well. The middle and ends of the plotline of the game however, are not.

BEASTIARY: Very Poor. The enemies in DmC are not much for variety. Apparently anywhere you go in Limbo the demons are pretty much the same. They have different types of the same enemies, where ones are vulnerable to either Angel or Demon weapons. Overall you will face upgraded versions of the same enemies throughout the game. One in particular should have been a boss because he was really cool to face, and his upgraded versions, since the 5 & a half boss fights in the 20 level game are deficient for an action game. They are mostly large, blob like figures instead of the fearsome creatures prevalent in games of this genre. They are quite the mixed bag & the fights consist of yes heavy PLATFORMING.

DIFFICULTY: Easy. Accurate. I played the game on the Nephilim ( Hard ) difficulty and I barely died, ever. The game difficulty seems just about right so anyone can just pick this up and kick ass. Be aware that restarting a checkpoint counts as a death in the game ( what? ) and the autosave feature will NOT hold on to your items if you've used them and then died ( or restarted ).

LASTING APPEAL:

Players of the previous games will most likely not favor this game too much. The story mode may be good for one play through, but the excessive platforming may anger God of War veterans as well as the lack of boss fights. Also being a short adventure ( +/8 hours ) and the lack of the Vergil DLC at launch to extend it, sadly is not enough to warrant a full retail purchase ( like I did ). I'd recommend holding off for God of War Ascension instead.

Buy DMC: Devil May Cry Now

In October of 2001 the original Devil May Cry hit store shelves. At the time the game changed the way action games were designed and played. It was stylish and filled to the brim with a lot of intense set pieces and graphical effects. It was a truly groundbreaking game. Since then Devil May Cry has been on a roller coaster. The second game was not well received, while the third one hit just as high. The fourth game was met with some mixed reception. Ever since then Devil May Cry has been on a hiatus. When the new DmC was announced fans were in for a shock. The first was that it was going to be a reboot. The second was that it was going to be an entirely different game all together. If you're a hardcore fan of the original Devil May Cry games this is going to take a moment to get adjusted to. The thing is, however, from a gameplay standpoint DmC is quite fun. From a narrative standpoint, not so much.

Devil May Cry has never been much for story. Even the previous games aren't much for story. They were action games filled with cheesy one-liners and a protagonist with a cocky attitude. The original Dante was a cool guy, but more of a caricature than an actual character. Still a fun character, but not a well fleshed out or developed one. Which is partially why people seemed to be drawn to him. He was just good fun. The new Dante isn't exactly like that. It will take a moment to really get used to him. Where as the old Dante was a cocky guy that was half human and half demon, this Dante is a foul mouthed, sex crazed, booze drinking... kid. He also happens to be half demon and half angel. This makes him and his brother Vergil a Nephilim. Which means they'll be able to take down corporate Kingpin Mundus. It's not nearly as absurd as it sounds. The story actually goes somewhere for a bit, although it's hard to ignore that the game seems to try way too hard to be gritty and "mature." The themes it tackles are a lot bigger than the previous games, for sure. Aside from some sexual themes and alcohol, the game isn't afraid to talk about corporate greed or economic issues. Even going so far as to provide a pretty big structure for the world it takes place in.

The game tries to provide some depth to the characters. Dante and Vergil are built with tragic backstories. The game actually tries to flesh them out quite a bit. They certainly come off as interesting characters. Vergil more so than Dante, however. Dante comes off as that guy you probably knew in high school who was trying to be cool and rebellious. He begins to grow from that, but upon first meeting him he comes across more like a brooding jerk than as someone you want to spend the next ten or so hours with. Vergil by comparison, is actually more interesting and easier to deal with.

There are times when the story tries so hard for the mature stuff that it sort of comes off as a lot more childish than it should. When Dante swears it almost comes across like a middle school kid that just learned what curse words are for the first time. The villains are somewhat similar in this regard. It's as though the developers seem to think that if you drop enough f-bombs, flash enough exotic skin and show enough gross and disgusting fluids that this will make the game instantly mature. Those "mature" themes and moments often get ruined by some of the badly written dialog (from the villains, especially) and some of the over-the-top cutscenes. It adds some shock value and great eye candy but it more often than not undermines the characters it's trying to build and the story it's trying to tell. A story, mind you, that the developers clearly want you to take more seriously than the 2001 release just based on the themes and economic turmoil it's trying to present.

It isn't that this stuff is there, it's actually that DmC tries too hard with it. Simply put the story isn't well written, but unlike the 2001 game it is still begging you to take it seriously. Meaning it's not intentionally poorly written for the sake of cheesiness. It can be given credit for trying to reach a little higher, but it's hard not to notice that it comes across like a teenager trying to show the world he's a not a kid anymore. DmC wants to be seen as a "grown up." And it goes just a little too hard in the gritty direction to do it by trying to stuff in as much "adult" content as it can muster to drive the point home that this is supposed to be gritty and serious fare. It's more about the context that this stuff is put in than anything. I'm sure several won't mind this sort of thing, but by now I don't think gaming needs to try so hard to prove it's grown up and mature. At least not like this.

The biggest strength of DmC is that the combat and gameplay is really fluid. The missions themselves are pretty straightforward. The gameplay takes place in a parallel world called Limbo. Each level is pretty linear. You'll always know where to go no matter what. You can explore quite a bit, though. There are usually hidden items and secret missions off the beaten path and lost souls to find. You'll find yourself having to replay levels to find it all. After each mission you're ranked in style points, completion, time, items used and deaths. It's tempting to play through some levels to get the SSS rating.

The combat is pretty fluid, though. It's actually a lot of hack and slash fun because of how fluid it can be. It does take a moment to get used to. Dante can go between his demon and angel halves when fighting. The angel weapons tend to be more agile while the demon weapons have more brute strength. What works about the system is that you can switch weapons in midstream. This makes for some fascinating combos and juggles. And Dante still has his guns and his sword that he can utilize as well. There's a lot of variety in the combat. Dante also has a grapple to him. He can use it to pull platforms or enemies to him. This all goes into making a pretty cool and complex system.

The only big problem with it is that there is no way for Dante to lock on. And sometimes in the throws of combat Dante targets and shoots or grapples the wrong enemy. It can disrupt the flow of combat at times. Likewise, the other problem isn't as big. While fighting normal enemies is fun, the boss fights are strangely no where near as fun. Some are creative in design but at some point they just fall into predictable patterns. For as much fun as the combat can be it's pretty stale when a boss battle starts.

The combat system is, for the most part, pretty easy to learn. You'll also slowly ease into much of it. You'll be able to purchase and upgrade new abilities as you progress and you'll always be able to train with them with a test dummy that never actually dies. It's a great way to practice.

DmC isn't an easy game, though. It's got quite a few difficulty levels to choose from and they actually play differently from one another. Mastering the game on one difficulty won't prepare you for the next. We're talking more than just enemies hitting harder or you taking more damage. Stronger enemies will appear in place of the standard enemies. Some of this stuff amounts to some decent replay value. The levels are well designed enough that it's alright to play through them. It's a lot of fun to try to master various combos and you can always try tweaking the difficulty for a bigger challenge. All this will easily make the story more passable.

On the other hand, the game is hit or miss with its presentation. It crunches a lot of pixels but the art style in and of itself takes time to get used to. In one regard the game pushes for this gritty, serious look that so many games have been gunning for lately. This is especially true in the cutscenes. The missions, however, where you're in Limbo are actually quite vibrant and colorful, yet they also have a madhouse and insanity like feel to them. You'll run down corridors that close in on you and you'll see writing on the walls or floor like "Found You" or "Kill Dante" etc.. It's elaborate and certainly helps separate the two parallel worlds. Once you get used to the style of the game it's easy to settle in. It's overall a good looking game.

It's hard not to compare it to the 2001 game. Back then the original Devil May Cry was groundbreaking. This one... not so much. There are still shades of the original Devil May Cry here. You can still do plenty of juggling and stylish moves. Even some of the over-the-top nature of the cutscenes show that the developers were inspired by the original in some way.

In the end, however, DmC needs to be able to stand on its own. As such the game is pretty fun to play but beyond that there isn't much to it. It seems to be reaching higher than the 2001 release, but it's undermined by how hard it tries to be taken seriously. It's not a terrible game, but it's certainly not as rewarding as it could be either.

First off I come from DMC (old) I've been a fan since DMC1 launched back than and been with the series since. Even went off to buy Bayonetta since they shared similarities. Anyways don't come here expecting this to be a continuation to the DMC we all have come to love. It's a REBOOT, a reboot technically means it's a new game of something old. Take for example the new Tomb Raider game or Hitman Absolution. This Dante starts out immature not caring of life around him just like the DMC3 dante but in the end makes a big turn around.

Story: I personally feel this game to be somewhat of a prequel to DMC3. There's a lot of interaction between the brothers in this game. And in the end I believe is the reason vergil despises his brother dante in the classics. Now the game revolves around propaganda and a group of revolties. Very similar to the antics of V of V for Vendetta. Mundus makes an appearance as once again the antagonist of the game. They even gave him the 3 eyes just like his DMC1 counterpart as a reference. If you played DMC1 than you know Mundu's wants to rule the world and our hero has to stop him, but it's more than that. All this little things really help build up the story till the very end. I don't want to spoil anything so I'll leave it at that.

Gameplay: Awesome, Very smooth transitions from the sword swings. And for a game that supposedly only runs at 30fps I didn't see a single frame drop during combat. You only get around 7 weapons, 3 guns, 2 angel, 2 demon weapons which is a downer for us who like to have more in our arsenal. If you are expecting dante to give us a little exhibition like he did in DMC3 when he acquires new gear than think again. Now for the DT (Devil Trigger) it's done by pressing both analog sticks when you acquire it, and sadly it's not very good. You do more damage, are faster, get white hair and a vibrant red coat. To me it's not as cool as the other DMCs but again this is a reboot so it's expected.

Sound: For the most part it's pretty much what you would expect. Voice acting is top notch, music is metal and screamo. It's alright imo.

Graphics: Absolutely beautiful, the game takes place in Limbo and the human world. The human world is pretty dull with natural colors, but Limo is amazing. It has very bright oranges and blues as you see in the cover art. It just looks nice.

Verdict: it's a must have title for any action lover. It took me two days to beat it, but only because I couldnt put it down. Still playing it at this moment trying to max out my health, dt and arsenal, I really recommend you buy the DLC for this game (Vergil's Downfall) It's 8.99$ on the PSN store. I bought this for my 10 year old son, but he was really too old for it. My 7 year old son absolutely loves it. The other reviews I read are right that it is short. My 7 year old completed it in 2 hours. It patterns the movie. By patterns, I mean it is EXACTLY like the movie. If you are planning to see the movie, don't play the game until after. The movement tracking is superb, one of the best I've seen with Kinect games. You actually sword fight, climb, sneak, jump, play the guitar, and yes, even dance fight! Very easy so that a younger kid doesn't get frustrated with it. The only reason why it didn't get a 5 from me is the length of gameplay; however, as most moms know, a young one doesn't care, even after they beat it they'll play it over and over and over and over...

Just bought this impulsively for myself & I'm so glad I did. I can't wait to show this to my step-grandkids. I loved Puss in Boots from the movies & was hoping it would have an Antonio Banderas voice in the character & it does. The cartoon graphics & sounds are excellent. It's multiplayer so you can compete with others for the highest score (haven't done that yet). Follow Boots on his epic adventure. I just succeeded in accomplishing the "Bar of Thieves" in Santa Maria part of the map. I just stopped & the game saved my progress). Boots doesn't just sword fight, he also can kick enemies with his "Bandit Boot", move, block, deflect, dodge the barrels, pounce, balance a tightrope between buildings, shimmy along a ledge, climb, find & hide behind special objects, sneak, etc. Boots tells a very quick story while moving to another location within the town. You can also make him play guitar to charm his kitty girlfriend. It's a fairly quick moving action game and the directions appear on the screen during the game on how to dodge, pounce(jump), balance, play guitar, etc. as needed. This is excellent since I didn't even read the directions before playing. Wii Motion Controller & Nunchuck are required. It's recommended for everyone age 10 + (because of the cartoon mischief & violence). Thankfully, there's no gory stuff & when an opponent is defeated, he falls backward & Boots moves on to the next enemy. I am strongly against violent games, but for some reason, this sword fighting game doesn't seem to bother me. Anyway, I highly recommend this game to anyone who is into 3 Musketeers/Puss in Boots swashbuckling. So far, I've played 5 hours total of this game & find it fun & cute.

Update: 2/13/12: Today, I came home to find my 13 year old grandson helping my 4 year old grandson play "puss in boots" game. They were having a great time taking turns. (older one helped little one over challenging parts, like balancing the tightrope & grabbing the green gold). Neither wanted to stop playing after playing for 3 1/2 hours straight (no exaggeration). They achieved 4 places on the map. I'm not sure how much more there is but they definitely had fun with the progress. It's really a cute game. Even my granddaughters were watching while playing with toys & said it reminded them of the Puss in Boots movie.

I'm surprised so many reviewers on here are disappointed with this game. I guess we all have different expectations. So to be fair, I recommend people rent it before buying it so as not to be bummed out. Personally, I'm very happy I bought this game impulsively. I also want to get the Puss in Boots dvd when it's available but I digress...

Graphics are gorgeous, even better than the already top-of-the line Kinect Disneyland Adventures game... the graphics are as good as watching the movie itself!

Some new motion movements that I have not seen in other kinect games.

We have to watch the initial opening everytime instead of being able to go straight to the game.

Im 24 years old n while I know this game is made more for the younger age group i still enjoyed it very much.

Fairly simple to play great story slightly different than movie but basically the same. I enjoyed working for all the trophies getting gold in all the levels can be a challange. Overall tho i highly recommend it for younger kids but still a fun game to play for adults. The PS move function works great. Also the minigames were fun n challanging.

The game is perfect for kids, they all have a lot of fun. It was like the movie. The only setback was that it was too short. Both of my kids (9-10 years old range)finished the game in like two days, when they normally take weeks before finishing any game.

These work well and are a lot of fun. For the money, I'm very happy with them, for Rock Band and CD music. Depending on the amount of bass in your song and system, you have to adjust the "threshold" setting to maximize the effect.

I had a couple bad experiences with Rock Gear, both before my purchase, with their customer service, and after purchase, with the delivered product -but the very day I posted my bad experience on Amazing-dot-com, I was contacted by Rock Gear, who made things right by sending me replacement parts and bonus parts.

My bad experience before purchase:

I used their online chat, and the person knew nothing about the product beyond what was in plain view on their website.

I left the owner a voice mail asking a question before purchasing, and I never got a reply.

My bad experience after purchasing:

One of the two HexoLight 4000s I ordered didn't work. I determined it was the power supply, not the lights, by swapping the power supplies. Upon examining the bad power supply, it was DIRTY: covered in dirt and dust and grime, like it had kicked around someone's shop floor for a week. How it landed in a shipped product brings on some quality concerns. The product was designed in the US, but is entirely made in China.

How RockGear made it up to me:

They called me back and apologized.

They sent me a new power supply overnight.

They sent me extra cables that allow you to place lights far away from the controller. I like these a lot.

They called me again to ensure I was satisfied.

I got this mainly for the kids to use when playing Rock Band and Guitar Hero, but when it came we just plugged it in and fired up a Blue Man Group show on the dvr. Adding the hexolight 3000 in with our surround sound and big screen, the show was much more immersive. I was quite pleasantly surprised, and the kids feel like rock stars. The sets with more than 3 lights must be amazing.

I bought 1 for my kids when they play Guitar Hero and 2 for the basement to compliment our 'disco' lights. I like the effects and that they are sound sensitive. You will have to adjust the sound sensitivity if you adjust the volume of your stereo/audio system. I like the price and free shipping. Thanks Amazon.

I've had quite a few issues with this product. I've ordered 2, direct from the manufacturer (Rock Gear Shop) through Amazon. When shipment arrived, the second light was missing instruction manual and had sloppy and ripped wrapping. One hex module was stuck to another railing too tight and had to spend much time and effort to separate.

Now after a month of very light use, one of the control modules broke the lights stay on fast flashes, and no adjustments to Threshold or Speed knobs allieviate the problem. This essentially breaks the pulse response to sound feature and hex light becomes a simple strobe light.

I'm very dissappointed in this product and the purchase.

I have a 50's style burlesque review show with five other girls. We dance at various bars and the lights are SO perfect for creating magic and ambiance without a lot of hassle or expense for us. They are so easy and light! I had no problems with setting them up or using them.
