I already own the first generation MadCatz SF4 TE, and I decided I wanted another stick.

I don't play SF4 anymore but I am very much into BlazBlue, and I've not surprisingly ordered Continuum Shift already. This stick is pretty much exactly as the 1st gen TE was when I bought it, the Sanwa pushbuttons and Sanwa JLF stick are as responsive as ever. I personally love the artwork, blue bezel and full piano black sides.

The stick has very clearly been made with Super Street Fighter 4's TE S adjustments in mind, as the Lock key does indeed lock the Start/Select buttons as well, although it keeps the sides unlike the TE S (many would prefer this though, since the TE S's lack of sides can irritate your wrist).

As for the 50 USD price premium over the standard 150 USD SF4 sticks, I believe this is justified because you are paying for a limited run stick. The box it comes in isn't as well-crafted as the SF4 TE box, but the artwork on it and the stick is just fantastic and the 'Limited Run' print just makes it even more special. I think one of the coolest additions is the stick number given on the bottom of the stick, which is given in ####/1500 format. The fact that you can identify which of the 1500 sticks made on each platform you have is a really cool addition.

My final thoughts are -incredible stick, as expected from the MadCatz TE line, and combines the best parts of the TE and TE S in one with great artwork (stick and case) and paint job. For any limited run collector's, the 50 USD premium should be completely fine. Personally I had to also pay import fees to Canada, and I still think it was worth it since I am a huge BlazBlue fan and I also like collecting limited editions. Too bad there is no North American Continuum Shift LE, that would be the perfect complement to this stick.

I ordered this on amazon and got it in the same week. The packaging and everything was great. Completely satisfied with that.

It's newer than the round 2 TE so it should have the latest PCB inside as in a better one than the original TE. plus it's cheaper than the other TE sticks so it is a ficken amazing deal. I think the art looks great and I'm planning on making my own plexi glass cover for it anyways. The button layout is supposedly different than the other TE sticks but I customize my controls anyways so that is not really a problem.

But i did have some issues with the stick.

First the bad:

I received my stick with the R2 button (bottom row 3rd button) not working. I've read in another review here that someone got a madcatz TE stick with one of the buttons unplugged...so i thought maybe the same issue was happening. I decided to go ahead and void the warranty and open it up. To my dismay everything was connected properly. However the button felt loose from the bottom. After messing around with it for some time, the button base clicked and i thought i broke it :(. I then pressed the button and it snapped back into place and it started working just fine. In trying to put the thing back together, i discovered the source of the problem. The bundle of wires is zip tied and sits right under the buttons. It happened to press up against the button in question which was what was causing the problem. I had to cut the zip tie to close it back up without affecting the buttons.

Now on to the actual stick:

It's great like everyone says. If you're like me and this is you're first arcade stick, it takes some time to get used. Not just the layout but rather the sensitivity of the buttons. The sanwa buttons are so sensitive that if you graze them, they'll register. This is great for when you're used to the stick but I find myself constantly hitting things i didn't mean to at the beginning. Also the timing becomes different since the buttons do register so easily. I found myself hitting the buttons too early using the same timing as a game pad. Once you get used to it though, it is awesome.

The square gate is fine for me. I'm shooting off fireballs at will after a few minutes with the stick. Also i like that it catches in the corner if i want it for dragon punch inputs since I tend to over rotate before and likely would still over rotate with a octagon gate.

Overall the stick is great just like everyone says.

It has a good weight

sit well on on your lap or on a table

super responsive controls

large surface

long cord

The only reason i can't give it full 5 stars is cause my stick came to me not working and required me to void the warranty to fix it.

This is my first time owning an arcade stick. I have been an avid fan of fighting games and have always loved to play these at the arcades. I was always more familiar with the controller because I've always owned fighters like Tekken, Marvel Vs. Capcom, Street Fighter, etc. After playing on this stick for a few hours, I must admit that it is the best experience I have had with any. Now I've never owned a stick at home, but from what I've played at various arcades all across the US, this is by far the most comfortable stick I have ever played on. The buttons are all very evenly spaced so it doesn't feel like the buttons are out of reach and the feel of the buttons and joystick are superb. I especially like the little clicking function it has on the 8 way directional joystick because this is a square gate restrictor and sometimes people will have problems doing a dragon punch or similar moves. It also feels very comfortable on the lap, not too heavy and doesn't leave a print. If you want to use it on a table though, it has rubber stoppers so it won't leave an imprint as well. The greatest asset, though (for a fighting stick anyway), is the fact that there is absolutely no input lag. This characteristic is paramount for anyone considering an arcade stick because precision is very key in fighting games. One wrong move and you will usually be punished. Finally, there is a small hatch for the usb wire to go into, meaning that this is a wired arcade stick, which is great because you can bring it to tournaments without fear. I would recommend this one to anyone who is considering buying an arcade stick. I used to think that Madcatz did not know how to make a good product because my friend got a wireless controller from them and it died immediately after he bought it, but this was a few years ago. I am certainly glad I gave them another chance after hearing about the great Tournament Edition sticks because this one is certainly a keeper.

For those of you that don't want to read the long paragraph, I'll lay out the pros here in bullet form.

-Great spacing for buttons

-clicking function for 8-way directional joystick helps if you need assistance with doing moves like dragon punch because of square gate.

-not too heavy or too light, so playable on table or lap

-small hatch for usb cable to be stored away

-No input lag whatsoever

-great artwork

-limited edition, only 1500 made (if you're into that sort of thing)

Been a long time fixture online in Super Street Fighter 4 and have been meaning on making the jump to a proper tournament quality stick. Just got the BlazBlue TE Fightstick and have been using it non stop for a few days. My impressions of the stick is that the design is beautiful, neater looking, in my opinion, than the SSF4 TE stick. Everything works top notch, the Sanwa parts are as amazing as always.

Highly Recommended.

1. It does not steal power from the PS3. It plugs into the PS3's power receptacle and the Power Cord plugs into it. The AC power "passes thru" to the PS3.

2. It moves the PS3's power switch to the front of the unit for easy access. Which you'll need, see below.

3. It is loud.

4. It can be difficult to attach to the PS3. You must be careful not to break it or the air slots on the PS3. It snaps into place and you are warned to be careful when doing so as it is very easy to break things.

5. It doesn't turn off when you put the PS3 in standby mode pretty lame. So, when you put your PS3 to sleep for the night (standby mode) the fans on this thing continue to run. That is why they moved the power switch up front. You have to power it, and the PS3, off to turn the fans off.

6. I couldn't live with the extra noise and the inconvenience of having to get up and manually turn the PS3 off in order to turn the fans off. So, I took mine off and it is now sitting in the closet, unused.

Good design for the fans, but bad implementation (having to manually turn it off). If you use this system, you can say goodbye to using your controller or your Blue Ray controller to turn the system on/off.

There have been no official reports of the PS3 overheating so until that happens, why waste money, as I did, on fans which may or may not be needed.

Save your money and buy a game instead.

In theory this should be a good product, right? Here's the setup: One big fan on the back, two tiny fans on the top, and two really really tiny fans also on the top, and finally variable speed control. But wait, why does it have its own power switch? This switch acts like a "master" switch so every time you want to switch the PS3 on or off, you have to walk over to the console and flip this new switch (oops, make sure your PS3 is properly shutdown first and the hard drive is done writing because it is essentially like ripping out the electric cord). Yes, the switch is a dumb design when they should have just made that switch only control the fans and pass-through the power to the PS3 so it can use its own power control software. But that doesn't matter, its not like you could forget to turn it off. This device makes some noise and a lot of it. Remember the general rule: the smaller the fan the more noisy it seems to be. Fine, I'll compromise a little noise for saving the PS3 from all that evil heat... no, this thing doesn't pull heat out fast enough (oh yeah, that's because these loud small fans are too small!) In summary, save your money and avoid this seriously stylish piece of junk. Great idea, it's too bad someone didn't test a prototype first.

Buy PlayStation 3 Intercooler Now

The idea behind this product, and the implication that doubtless drives many people to purchase it, is that you need an external means of cooling your PS3. You buy something like this because you want to protect your very expensive investment, but that's assuming there's a problem with the console overheating in the first place. I don't believe that's the case--I've seen these things played for hours at a time without a cooler, and most of the consoles on display at local retailers, which are on for many hours, are not cooled externally.

Besides being (probably) unneccessary, however, the Intercooler is poorly designed. The thing is bulky, though maybe that can't be avoided. It's terribly loud as well--loud enough that you may not be able to use it on a PS3 if you're playing it late at night with the sound muted so you don't wake up the family. There is a dial to adjust the fan speeds, but even on the minimum this thing sounds like some kind of mutated hairdryer.

It has it's own on/off switch, which also acts as a master switch for the PS3. If you switch off the intercooler the console goes off as well, which could be a major issue if a game is saving or something. Sleep mode for the PS3 works only if the Intercooler is still on (and roaring), and you can forget about turning the PS3's power off from your controller.

Bottom line--this is a pretty poor product. Don't let the fear of a PS3 meltdown drive you to get ripped off by one of these things--just leave the console in a well-ventilated area and let the system cool itself off the way it was designed to do.

After reading the previous bad reviews, I had to say something. As an Electrical Engineer and someone who does electrical circuit and mechanical design, this is not a bad product. I knew before I even hooked it up that it would add an additional level of noise! It's something that I've learned to tune out and doesn't really bother me. What many don't realize is that heat is a semiconductors worse enemy. Just because the PS3 doesn't warn you, it doesn't mean that an accelerated degradation of the internal components is not taking place. The nice thing about the unit is that I can allow it to run a few minutes after shutting the system down. This prevents the internal temperature from rising due to residue heat once the PS3 is powered down.

I bought this thing and the first two things I noticed were:

-Its WAY too loud.

-I can't leave the PS3 in standby mode.

Then after 3 weeks I hear this HORRENDOUS noise coming from the PS3. The large fan on the cooler was making noise like a bearing was going out.

Suffice to say, don't waste your money.

EDIT Talked to Sony Repair about these things based on what I had heard at my local Gamestop. DO NOT USE THIS DEVICE.. The use of it will void your warranty on your PS3. They apparently draw too much current and cause the power connectors in the PS3 to burn up.

I'ma fan of Kiss since 1977, I went through the ups and downs with them. These sticks mean a lot for me, and in case of this purchase, I got very good quality, although it's "just" a collectible item for me.

Shipping receiving was, as expected as prime member, very quick and professional.

A must have for Kiss-Fans

Okay, got the sticks. They weigh almost twice as much as the regular Guitar Hero sticks weigh. Plus, these things stink like you wouldn't believe! I had to air them out for two weeks before we could even use them!

Pros: Nice sticks they work. Probably made for real drums though?

Cons: Smell terrible at first. Heavy (too heavy?) for Guitar Hero. Not sure long term what this will do to my drums.

This game had me worried at first... there are a couple glitches and bugs here and there but nothing game breaking. I was terribly bored/ afraid the first part of the game but that is only because it has a slow beginning and takes awhile to get into... as soon as you start to play as Connor who is the main character in the game which i believe is the fourth sequence thats when the game starts to pick up and adds in all the new features which include hunting, free running through trees and the ability to have a bow and a tomahawk. All of these new features make the game way better and a blast to play, if you are not enjoying this game at the beginning i beg you to at least play until you beat a mission or two as Connor!

This game isnt perfect it has its flaws with the AI being stupid at times and horses being hard to control sometimes but the game offers so much new elements as well as the now polished old elements which made previous games amazingly fun! The graphics are amazing except for certain things like bushes/leaves or shadows are kinda blurry/not that detailed but those are such minor details that it shouldn't be judged to harshly...

I highly recommend this game to anyone who is a fan of the series! If you are a newcomer to the series i recommend getting and playing the first two games at the very least.

I was immensely looking forward to this game, but now that I've played through it, I'm disappointed. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad game, but it really didn't have that extra specialness that kept me addicted to the Ezio games. The humor that was so apparent with Ezio is no where to be found with Connor and the overall storyline was boring to me. I also really missed the economy aspects that were ever so present in the Ezio games. While there is a bit of that in this game, it's not nearly as compelling, though I did enjoy hunting (and I'm no hunter!). Maybe this isn't a fair criticism, but I also loved the exotic travel part of the AC series and as someone who lives on the East Coast of the US, I never got that extra special flair with this game. In general, this is a decent game, but didn't live up to my expectations for the franchise.

Assassins Creed has had an amazing run. The story and development has always been top notch. I've bought all the games and played them all again just before buying this one. This one was a let down. It is very different from the other games. You might like it if you approached as a new game and not part of the series because there is definitely some disjoint going on.

Don't let the 1 star reviews fool you (They aren't even reviews of the game, rather, they are reviews of Amazon's service. Rookies)

The beginning is slow, but completely necessary to build the foundation of what turns out to be an amazingly well written storyline.

Once you become Connor and start receiving your assassin training, by sequence 4 you will be having the time of your life killing red coats, raiding forts, jumping from tree to tree.

It just doesn't get any better than this game. Period.

I pre-ordered this as soon as it was available. SO WORTH THE WAIT! The best out of the series so far. I love the new features and side missions like the naval battles. The only thing I hate is waiting another year to play the next one! I can't wait to see where the games go next.

I have only played this game for a few hours.

Likes:

Graphics are well rendered and the backgrounds look very life like.

You get the pink mist when one shoots enemies.Weapons are rendered well as are vehicles.

Sound is good I had no problems hearing commands.Good soundtrack when one is riding in Hummers.

Gameplay is fun the controls differ from Dragon Rising.I liked how the game plays.Riding around during the first mission with evryone chatting and then a IED taking out a vehicle. Then having to secure a perimeter to do a CASEVAC brought back memories for me from my tour. The smack talking by AI teamates is amusing and also brought back memories.

Combat can get intense one bullet in the right spot and you are done.Cover is important as a bullet can bounce back off a wall and kill you.No hiding out and healing like other games. You have to bandage yourself or you will bleed out.

Enemies will try to surpress and flank you.One must adjust for bullet drop, unlike COD no 1000 meter handgun kills.

Squad command is very important to success in this game.I am still learning the commands at this time.I also like that the enemy will fall back if enough firepower is brought upon them.Once enemies are eliminated no more surprises.Unlike other games where the keep coming until you move up.

One can also get unlocks and can customize their loadout which is a improvement over Dragon rising.

Dislikes:So far my only gripe is the poor friendly AI.

They have a bad habit of running in front of you and getting shot. And I found I have to give commands multiple times til they comply.

Multiplayer:Internet in my area is poor so I cannot give a review of online play.

Unlike Dragon Rising Fireteam engagments are online only.I was a little bummed by that.I do believe to get the max from this game one should play co-op with friends.

Thoughts:So far this game is a great FPS/Sim.It gave me plenty of realism with movement to contact and intense combat. Most COD and SOCOM fans won't like this game IMHO.As one has to think and use teamwork to be successful as it is done in the real world. If one can get three dedicated friends to play co-op it should be quite the time.Your Squad's callsign is "Outlaw" which was my Platoons callsign in Iraq that brought a smile to my face and made me miss my friends.

I try not to be the Military guy who trashes games.I play for fun first and foremost and this game is fun.

I will update as I play so others can make informed purchases.

Update 6-9-11

I have not made it to the PLA missions yet.I find this game very challenging on Hardcore.

Enemy AI is good though they tend to run into the open at times.Engagement ranges from distance to CQB in towns.Clearing buildings is fun and you need to be quick or else.

Friendly AI still runs in the line of fire so one gets to use med packs quite a bit LOL.

So far I have found no lag in frame rates.Graphics are better on some things than others.

During a controlled detonation the explosion was rendered very life like with smoke rising like it should.

I now have team commands down which make the game more fun.

The learning curve is not bad at all, be patient and you'll be fine.there is a lot of cussing but that is how Grunts talk.Weapon sounds are a little lacking but should not deter one from buying this game.

I do hope the campaign is of decent length which seems to be lost in gaming today.

Note:No Vehicle missions yet, will update if that changes.Weapons jam which add to the realism.

If you ever wondered what the Brave men and women go through fighting insurgents this is the game for you.

This is a very good military sim for consoles not quite ARMA but a good way to get ones interest in the Genre.

Take the time thank Veterans.

Update 6-11-11

PLA missions are tough going.Stuck on a level where you have to hold off a Mechanized Infantry attack.

Vehicles are rendered very well.Someone at THQ did their homework as the PLA deployed by the book with Infantry advancing with APCs in support.

No vehicle missions yet will post if there are.I recommend playing on hardcore to really get the rush of playing this game.

Vehicle missions happen after the first PLA mission.Good detail of the interior controls are easy to use.

This review is coming from a person who dislikes Activision's Call of Duty franchise, but loves EA's Battlefield franchise. Also, I thought Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising was not very good, though in some circles it is thought of as superior to this, which is fine. If simply comparing Dragon Rising to Red River, Dragon Rising is the more hardcore of the two, I think.

The bad:

Sgt. Knox is more of a Drill Instructor (these are Marines) than a true leader. He threatens and curses nearly all the time. I understand that there are moments that a leader needs to be hard on his men, but this is ridiculous. While it lends itself as not necessarily improving the "realism" when you are in his presence, it is often times humorous and entertaining the first time through.

As well as Sgt. Knox is concerned, I know little or nothing of my squad mates. I'm not sure if they just threw this squad together at the last minute or what, but I found myself not really caring or feeling regret if one of them died. All those long vehicle rides and I don't get to learn anything from the people I am commanding? I thought it would have been a nice touch to find out certain things about them. I think I might have "worked" a little extra hard to keep them alive (using the command a little carefully). I know it's not really real, but knowing Barletto has a newborn baby or Soto had a rough first tour of duty may have been kind of cool. Though, seriously, this is very minor stuff. Instead I command 3 robot type characters void of emotion.

The lack of competitive multiplayer is disappointing, but if it was going to be as bad as Dragon Rising, they made the right call. I can't help but think that a really well executed multiplayer would really boost this game [franchise] to the near top of the ranks. It's not COD or BATTLEFIELD, but I do believe there is a niche for these types of games. Squads of live players using tactics against other live players with a more real feel (no full magazine to drop enemies or quickscoping or any of that nonsense that plagues today's most popular FPS Multiplayers). I wouldn't even mind if it was 4 vs. 4 on a decent map. ANYTHING. Thankfully, they have Co-op mode where you can team up with buddies and play the AI. Heck, if Ubisoft can make a good multiplayer mode from Assassin's Creed series (a game I previously thought would be impossible to implement), Codemasters should be able to do it for this.

The good:

I love the Tajikistan setting. I found Dragon Rising to be a little dull because of the Skira Island setting. The setting in the middle east "feels" newer and fresh and current. Not much more to say about this.

The command menu is MUCH better than Dragon Rising. It's not nearly as cumbersome and after a single mission, you start memorizing some of the commands by reflex and really becomes a natural part of your gameplay. Instead of taking time to put the "point" behind a wall then look up to make sure you issue a hold position command, it becomes nearly reflex [up, right]. The quick ability to select one person of your squad to issue commands to is very nice. Move as a team or select certain people to put in certain positions. It is pretty cool to issue a command to secure a building and your team just goes about its business and starts clearing rooms and hearing that communication, slightly "humanizing" your squad.

Everything else is very well done. The missions appear to be actual missions you would perform in the middle east (clearing towns, protecting convoys and EOD teams, setting up a defensive position against enemies in trucks that are coming that you got from intel from your chain of command). The graphics are very nicely done long range, as there are some breathtaking views on the horizon. I've read that the graphics up close are not that good. I would honestly argue they are on par with COD (to me, COD can appear flat, or without depth at times).

The biggest thing for me is the no nonsense story and presentation. While it's not perfect (see above), for me, it beats the Hollywood theatrics that Call of Duty enlists and Bad Company 2 tries to mimic in their campaigns. In this sense, this is incredibly real, though holding a medpack in front of you magically fixes everything is not.

For consoles, this might be the most realistic shooter you can get, aside from Dragon Rising. Reviewed from PS3 version. This is nothing like ARMA II or those ultra realistic games, so keep that in mind if you love that side of the fence. This game fills that niche between ARMA II/OPF CWC and Bad Company series. This is pretty much where I fall and what I want from a military FPS.

Thanks for reading.

Score: 8/10.

Having played Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising I was hesitant to even try this game. Imagine my surprise when I discovered the problems that were prevelant in Dragon Rising had been dealt with in Red River. For one, running in this game doesn't make you motion sick because it doesn't feel like you are on a pogo stick. Second, the gun shakes about how it would in real life, unlike DR which made you think your arm was a jackhammer. The gameplay is fun and realistic without being too frustrating, and the maps are wide open, allowing you to get creative with your sight lines and angle of approach. All in all, definately good for someone looking to try for a change of pace from the usual Battlefield and CoD.

This game is not part of the Dead Rising 2 canon, as it is a "what if" scenario, but Capcom did a good job of improving things like load times, and the zombies are more aggressive. Cut scenes and plot are different because Frank West's presence changes the situation. The game may come off like a cash grab to some folks, but it is not really by comparison to say, Super Street Fighter IV and games like that, which only add a minute amount of added content.

Dead Rising 2: Off the Record gives you a new main character, new plot, new aggression level for zombies, new Psychos (boss fights) new missions, new items, new weapons, new combo weapons, the new amusement park area Uranus Zone, new outfits and of course Frank West's camera is fully functional to take pictures of the carnage (he IS a photojournalist, after all). Also, weapons and items are scattered in different places, so expect to have to search for your favorite weapons because they're probably not where you remember them from back in Dead Rising 2.

It also includes a Sandbox mode that people have been waiting for, where you can freely run around killing zombies without thinking about the timer like in the main game, and can also complete missions for cash and PP (Prestige Points Dead Rising's experience point system).

Unfortunately they have removed the Terror Is Reality online multiplayer mode, and they did not bring back Survival Mode from the original Dead Rising, but Online Co-Op for the main game is still in tact, and for those who are fans of Chuck Greene, they will appreciate playing as Chuck when they are player 2.

The game is overall an improvement over Dead Rising 2, but still shares many of it's flaws. If you liked Dead Rising (Xbox 360 exclusive) or Dead Rising 2, then you'll like Dead Rising 2: Off the Record. It's a lot better than what they could have done: a "Director's Cut" with one or two improvements. If you like Frank West or enjoyed your time in Fortune City with Chuck, you'll be pleased with your return to Fortune City with Frank West. He's covered wars you know.

Frank West is back, and boy has he let himself go. But in spite of this, he travels to Fortune City to rekindle his fame and finds himself in the middle of yet another zombie outbreak.

I was afraid to buy this game because reviews led me to believe that it was just a rehash of the first game, but I was pleasantly surprised. The new game play and different story line were engaging enough to keep me going, and the new sandbox mode is too much fun. Frank West brings new personality to the game, including some hilarious comments when picking up survivors and entering areas.

Pros:

SANDBOX MODE. I found myself playing it more often than I played the regular story line. Frank West can either mess around in Fortune City or play challenges to earn money. Smashing up casinos with no time limits to worry about is oddly stress-relieving.

-CHECKPOINTS. Any time you enter a new area, the game creates a checkpoint that you can load from if you die. Saved my rear a number of times. Why didn't you think of this before, Capcom?

Dialogue changed to better reflect Frank's personality. Most of the dialogue is new. Removal/re-imagining of certain cheesy puns (sorry Chuck).

New twist ending and slightly altered story line

Tons of new items, new outfits, and a good handful of new combo weapons.

Uranus Zone: New interactive area

Tons of new interactions. New ways to earn PP by interacting with the environment.

Better co-op, no more creepy Chuck clones.

More challenging game play. Zombies are meaner, SOME of the psychopaths have new and more challenging moves, and survivors are harder to rescue. Looters are meaner. Zombrex is harder to find.

SOME new psychopaths and survivors

Frank West's camera! Having the camera for this particular story line is surprisingly entertaining.

Cons:

Story line is still a little TOO familiar. They could have put a little more creativity into the main story line or added different survivors or more psychopaths, especially for the price they're charging.

You can pass three other video games in the time it takes this one to move past a loading screen or save screen.

Game play was a little glitchy? I had dialogue boxes staying stuck to the screen and one particularly annoying glitch where Frank walked around like he had anvils attached to his shoes. Could just be my system, I guess.

Frank West in a banana hammock.

I found this game worth the investment. If you played through the first DR2 and found yourself asking "Yes, but what would Frank West do?" this is definitely the game for you. If you don't have Dead Rising 2 yet, maybe you should buy this game instead. If you've played through this and think it was nothing but a rehash, well, I don't know what you were expecting. This game was branded as a re-imagining of the Fortune City controversy with Frank instead of Chuck. How different did you expect it to be?

+ PROS:

+ Frank West and his camera return to Dead Rising!

+ New weapons to create

+ New plot twists, new psychopaths and new challenges

+ 2 Multiplayer modes: Game campaign and Sandbox Mode

+ New area: The Uranus Zone

CONS:

Still has long load times

No more "Terror Is Reality" 4-player mode

Extra save slots and improved survivor AI make the game too easy for veterans of Dead Rising 1

PLOT:

It's been 5 years since the Willamette disaster, and in this game, we play Frank West, a photojournalist who's covered wars. He's had his 15 minutes of fame, and now he's slumming around the game show Terror Is Reality to pay the bills. A zombie outbreak occurs, and Frank needs to keep himself alive for 3 days until the military arrives to clean up the mess.

In a nutshell, The game starts as Dead Rising 2 did, but the story is told with Frank West in the spotlight.

GAMEPLAY:

From the beginning, Frank starts off with his hands and feet as his weapons. As you wander around the mall, you can use pretty much anything as a weapon, whether it's a can of whipped cream, a bottle of whiskey, or a pitchfork. Zombies are EVERYWHERE, and when 7pm rolls around, those zombies take an extra dose of the crazy and get super-violent.

Killing zombies earns character Prestige Points, which in turn levels up inventory slots, strength, hit points, offensive and defensive capabilities. Frank West is also able to earn PP by taking pictures of people in various poses such as brutality, horror, outtake, drama, erotica and more.

Frank has a series of case files to complete over the course of 3 days and during this time he can choose to try and save random survivors throughout the city, attempt to defeat psychopaths who have lost their minds due to the zombie outbreak, and try to find the life-giving Zombrex medicine that he needs every day to survive. Or, he can choose to do nothing more than wander around trying on clothes, eating various foods, or gambling in the casinos.

There are additional weapons to create that weren't in Dead Rising 2, and the Uranus Zone is a new kids-theme park area which allows the use of carnival rides to kill zombies.

IS IT BETTER THAN DEAD RISING 2 WITH CHUCK GREENE?

Well, I liked the alternate Frank West storyline. I assumed I knew everything that would happen and where to find everything, but the game developers counted on this and made several changes to the plot and item locations which made it harder for folks who played through Dead Rising 2 several times (like me).

I love the return of Frank West's camera, because that's what made Dead Rising so memorable...taking pictures of zombies is a very fun activity, though it's pretty hard to get a picture of a psychopath when they're trying to cleave me from neck to navel.

There are times when this feels like a complete clone of Dead Rising 2, but then I find new enemies, new plot points or new attack moves which remind me that I'm playing a different game.

MULTIPLAYER:

A player can choose to complete the storyline with an online partner. This makes defeating psychopaths a lot easier than standard 1:1 fighting, and some of the trophies can't be unlocked unless you have a co-op partner with you.

The second online gameplay mode is Sandbox mode. This is what I was dreaming about...I can run around and slice up zombies with no time limit, no need to find Zombrex, no missions, just plain old fashioned FUN. There are several challenges to complete for single player mode, such as trying to drink 30 alcoholic drinks within a time limit, and these challenges have increased difficulty if you decide to play with an online partner.

Your character needs $50,000 to complete a game mission? No problem! Just do an online session and save that game file. Then when you go back to story mode, the money's all there.

TROPHIES:

There's a LOT of busy work in getting all the trophies for Dead Rising 2: Off the Record. There are easy ones such as getting 69 zombie kills or making a zombie slip in a puddle of vomit. For the more dedicated players, there are some time consuming trophies such as finding all the combo cards, photographing all the PP stickers, or abstaining from consuming meat, dairy or alcohol until the military arrives.

Some trophies are missable during playthroughs unless you use a strategy guide.

CONS:

I've said it before, I'll say it again..these load times are RIDICULOUS. Going through a door or moving from one part of the mall to another can take up to 20 seconds with each load. When you fight a psychopath, there's a cutscene...then a loading screen...then you fight...then there's a closing cutscene...and yet ANOTHER loading screen. These load times kill the pacing of the game.

I must admit, I miss "Terror Is Reality". It was fun to run around and put blenders on zombie's heads, tear through a crowd of zombies with a slicicle, or use a zamboni to grind them up on the ice rink. However, Sandbox mode was a fair tradeoff because in the end, it's all about killing as many zombies as possible in the most satisfying ways.

Finally, the save slots. One of the things that made the first Dead Rising so hard and so challenging was having only one save slot. This left no margin of error and would require another run-through if something was missed. The survivors in Dead Rising 1 had a nasty habit of walking into packs of zombies, making trips back to the safehouse very difficult as the game progressed.

In this game, the characters are much better at avoiding zombies and can even use weapons, if they accept them from you. With 3 save slots and the improved AI, Dead Rising 2: Off the Record is more forgiving...but some folks do miss that challenge.

FINAL VERDICT:

On the whole, I really enjoyed Dead Rising 2: Off the Record. This gets 4 stars from me because I'm SO masochistic.

My main goals are hacking up zombies like I've got a hunting license, collecting difficult trophies and playing some short, goofy and blood-soaked online gaming sessions. If you like the same things, then I think you'll get a kick out of this game.

Now if you get frustrated with weapons that break (and all of them eventually do), long load times and time-limit missions, you might want to give this game a pass. I'd recommend at least a rental...Once you combine a 2x4 with a lawnmower and see the damage you can wreak, you might like this game enough to buy it.

Enjoy!

This game is a lot of fun the first couple of times you play it it gets a bit repetitive on subsequent plays but since the game cost less than 20 bucks it was a good value. I had owned Dead Rising 2 with Chuck Green in the key role prior to purchasing this version of Dead Rising 2. I like Frank West in the key role better than Chuck. With Frank you can take pictures for Power Points (like in Dead Rising 1) and you get a few different psychos than when playing as Chuck. Also there is a new area to explore in this game.

Want Dead Rising 2: Off the Record Discount?

I bought this game after not playing any other Dead Rising video game and it's a lot of fun. BUT there are many things that bother me like no autosave feature, inconsistent hit detection, the most bothersome of all, time limits to help survivors. Those time limits made saving AND walking them to the safe house feel like a huge chore. I found it quite annoying to be hounded by your partner telling you who needs help and where, piling up missions which are TIMED. Because of that, Sandbox mode is the most fun you'll have in this game. Boss battles are also ridiculously frustrating, forcing you to result to cheap tactics to win. This is a decent game to pick up for $20 or less, but if you spent more you overpaid.

If I had played this game for an hour and stopped, I would have given it 5 stars. Unfortunately, I tried to beat the game in one sitting. After so much repetition of the 5 Rob Zombie/White Zombie songs I was about to throw my guitar through my television.

This game is pretty good but doesn't have a large variety of songs and it makes you go through each level which could be up to half an hour listening to the same song over and over until you either beat the level or until a big character rushes you which will start a short clip of the level song (usually the intro or refrain). During these battles, you will have to play Guitar Hero/Rock Band style. If you get enough notes correct the baddie will die, if not you have to start over again. Once you go back to the game, the level song track starts again. It's alright in the beginning where you don't get rushed that much but toward the end you get rushed every few seconds. It's not all Rob Zombie though. The game also has heavy metal versions of classical music which surprisingly aren't as annoying as listening to Zombie over and over. This is pretty bad because I am a Rob Zombie fan, I can only imagine people who don't like his music playing this game.

As for the other parts of the game Dougie Howser (Neil Patrick Harris) plays the main character and makes interesting quirky remarks throughout the game. It makes the game interesting and fun to play. The game itself does not take itself too serious (having to fight a transformer made up of the vehicles in a trailer park) and would have been a pleasure to play if not for the bad soundtrack.

In Case you are wondering the soundtrack is made up of Blur the Technicolor, American Witch, What? & Mars Needs Women by Rob Zombie and O Fortuna, Ochi Chyorne, Danse De La Fee Dragee, Galop Infernal, Dans L'antre Du Roi De La Montagne, Pavane En Fa-Diese Mineur, No Moonlight performed by David Bernabo and Corey Layman, and PPM, Hagr, MB Battle, Toccata Et Fugue In Re Mineur by Bret Johnson.

This was a great random find... for this OBSCURE and under-appreciated gem of a game. what it lacks in overall polish is made up for by innovative concept and game play. I have always thought it would be FUN to revive the old "The Bard's Tale" as a new game using the ubiquitous guitar controller everyone has these days, but until that day, this will just have to suffice. So BAD it's GOOD is right! \M/ Rock on Dude.

Looks bad and plays worse. The narrator is kind of funny if you're into to country-boy humor, otherwise, just not a good game.

This was one of the most disappointing PS3 games that I've played.

It had two gameplay aspects that I love: arcade shooter and music. Despite that, it ends up being an awful game.

The biggest problem is its length. The game just goes on and on and on. The entire game takes over 4 hours to clear, and for an imitation arcade-shooter, that's way too long. It went from an interesting concept of defeating monsters with music notes to an annoying one.

Another big problem is the music. Most of the tracks are by Rob Zombie, but the battles with big monsters are done with random sections of the same song instead of in order. Sometimes, the same song sections will appear with 2 or more big monsters in the same level.

The voiceovers are textbook definitions of "phoned-in". Everyone sounded like there were just reading their lines.

I would not recommend this cable at all. I purchased this cable in order to hook up a PS3 to a Samsung 40" LCD TV. The highest setting I could get though was 1080I. I subsequently purchased another cheaper HDMI cable from Amazon and had no issues at all getting set up at 1080P.

Here is the cable I bought that worked:

"no such thing as a better cable" is a misnomer. HDMI cables are rated by the bandwidth capacity (commonly known as bitrate per second), the higher the rate, the more info it can pass digitally in a given timeframe. Why is this important? Because, as games become faster, and higher-bit color graphics emerge, HDMI cables will need the additional bandwidth capacity to smoothly transmit the digital signal from game/video source to your T.V. Emerging technologies, such as 12, 16, and 18-bit color, and "lossless audio" will become standard in the near future.

There are some HDMI cables capable of 3.4 Gbit/s, which can more than handle today's 1080P/12-bit color requirements. Some manufacturers, like Monster Cable, claim 10.2 Gbit/s with their M1000HD series HDMI cable, but it's really 3.4 Gbit/s cable multiplied by it's channels (3).

Current sources, such as HD DVD, BluRay and the current crop of PS3 games are adequately served by the HDMI cable listed here. However it won't be long before a "better cable" is required to handle the latest technology. You don't have to sweat it, for the moment.

This cable did not work with any of my equipment. I ordered it with my PS3 to connect directly to my TV. I had no signal at all. Also tried from my HD cable box to the TV and had no better luck.

I tried my PS3 with another HDMI cable and had no problems.

Don't buy this cable.

I commented fairly extensively on HDMI cable technology about 16 months ago. Some people are having a problem with this particular cable. I've found through doing several hook-ups of friend's and family's systems that they were usually doing something wrong in the hook-up process. Typically, after installing the HDMI cables they failed to change the source input/ouput to HDMI on their TV's or game consoles, or incorrectly matched the source resolution that best suits their TV. It is important to sync the hardware so it's all on the same page.

That being said, I won't defend this cable. I don't use it. I found Blue Jeans Cable to be perfectly suited for my 1080p setup. I use Belden bonded-pair HDMI 1.3a cable (apx. $4/ft) throughout my system. Moving to 1.3a or better will help to futureproof your system. And any decent HDMI cable will operate your PS3, so you don't have to buy this one.

Want PS3 HDMI Cable Discount?

Although this seems to be a fairly well constructed cable for the price, it does not appear to be 1.3 compliant. Avoid the hype that it says it's for PS3. If your TV requires an HDMI 1.3 compliant cable, you will not get better than 1080i, or in my case, garbled video. Nowhere on the packaging could I find the spec, even on the MFR's web site.

They were kinda difficult to get on but once they were on, they fit well and worked as advertised. I give them a three because once they are on they will not fit in any kind of charger stand. Since they are so hard to get on and off I had to give up on them becuase trying to charge four different items without a charger stand is too much. However if you don't charge your move controllers with a charger stand I would say they work great.
