I have only played this game for a few hours.

Likes:

Graphics are well rendered and the backgrounds look very life like.

You get the pink mist when one shoots enemies.Weapons are rendered well as are vehicles.

Sound is good I had no problems hearing commands.Good soundtrack when one is riding in Hummers.

Gameplay is fun the controls differ from Dragon Rising.I liked how the game plays.Riding around during the first mission with evryone chatting and then a IED taking out a vehicle. Then having to secure a perimeter to do a CASEVAC brought back memories for me from my tour. The smack talking by AI teamates is amusing and also brought back memories.

Combat can get intense one bullet in the right spot and you are done.Cover is important as a bullet can bounce back off a wall and kill you.No hiding out and healing like other games. You have to bandage yourself or you will bleed out.

Enemies will try to surpress and flank you.One must adjust for bullet drop, unlike COD no 1000 meter handgun kills.

Squad command is very important to success in this game.I am still learning the commands at this time.I also like that the enemy will fall back if enough firepower is brought upon them.Once enemies are eliminated no more surprises.Unlike other games where the keep coming until you move up.

One can also get unlocks and can customize their loadout which is a improvement over Dragon rising.

Dislikes:So far my only gripe is the poor friendly AI.

They have a bad habit of running in front of you and getting shot. And I found I have to give commands multiple times til they comply.

Multiplayer:Internet in my area is poor so I cannot give a review of online play.

Unlike Dragon Rising Fireteam engagments are online only.I was a little bummed by that.I do believe to get the max from this game one should play co-op with friends.

Thoughts:So far this game is a great FPS/Sim.It gave me plenty of realism with movement to contact and intense combat. Most COD and SOCOM fans won't like this game IMHO.As one has to think and use teamwork to be successful as it is done in the real world. If one can get three dedicated friends to play co-op it should be quite the time.Your Squad's callsign is "Outlaw" which was my Platoons callsign in Iraq that brought a smile to my face and made me miss my friends.

I try not to be the Military guy who trashes games.I play for fun first and foremost and this game is fun.

I will update as I play so others can make informed purchases.

Update 6-9-11

I have not made it to the PLA missions yet.I find this game very challenging on Hardcore.

Enemy AI is good though they tend to run into the open at times.Engagement ranges from distance to CQB in towns.Clearing buildings is fun and you need to be quick or else.

Friendly AI still runs in the line of fire so one gets to use med packs quite a bit LOL.

So far I have found no lag in frame rates.Graphics are better on some things than others.

During a controlled detonation the explosion was rendered very life like with smoke rising like it should.

I now have team commands down which make the game more fun.

The learning curve is not bad at all, be patient and you'll be fine.there is a lot of cussing but that is how Grunts talk.Weapon sounds are a little lacking but should not deter one from buying this game.

I do hope the campaign is of decent length which seems to be lost in gaming today.

Note:No Vehicle missions yet, will update if that changes.Weapons jam which add to the realism.

If you ever wondered what the Brave men and women go through fighting insurgents this is the game for you.

This is a very good military sim for consoles not quite ARMA but a good way to get ones interest in the Genre.

Take the time thank Veterans.

Update 6-11-11

PLA missions are tough going.Stuck on a level where you have to hold off a Mechanized Infantry attack.

Vehicles are rendered very well.Someone at THQ did their homework as the PLA deployed by the book with Infantry advancing with APCs in support.

No vehicle missions yet will post if there are.I recommend playing on hardcore to really get the rush of playing this game.

Vehicle missions happen after the first PLA mission.Good detail of the interior controls are easy to use.

This review is coming from a person who dislikes Activision's Call of Duty franchise, but loves EA's Battlefield franchise. Also, I thought Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising was not very good, though in some circles it is thought of as superior to this, which is fine. If simply comparing Dragon Rising to Red River, Dragon Rising is the more hardcore of the two, I think.

The bad:

Sgt. Knox is more of a Drill Instructor (these are Marines) than a true leader. He threatens and curses nearly all the time. I understand that there are moments that a leader needs to be hard on his men, but this is ridiculous. While it lends itself as not necessarily improving the "realism" when you are in his presence, it is often times humorous and entertaining the first time through.

As well as Sgt. Knox is concerned, I know little or nothing of my squad mates. I'm not sure if they just threw this squad together at the last minute or what, but I found myself not really caring or feeling regret if one of them died. All those long vehicle rides and I don't get to learn anything from the people I am commanding? I thought it would have been a nice touch to find out certain things about them. I think I might have "worked" a little extra hard to keep them alive (using the command a little carefully). I know it's not really real, but knowing Barletto has a newborn baby or Soto had a rough first tour of duty may have been kind of cool. Though, seriously, this is very minor stuff. Instead I command 3 robot type characters void of emotion.

The lack of competitive multiplayer is disappointing, but if it was going to be as bad as Dragon Rising, they made the right call. I can't help but think that a really well executed multiplayer would really boost this game [franchise] to the near top of the ranks. It's not COD or BATTLEFIELD, but I do believe there is a niche for these types of games. Squads of live players using tactics against other live players with a more real feel (no full magazine to drop enemies or quickscoping or any of that nonsense that plagues today's most popular FPS Multiplayers). I wouldn't even mind if it was 4 vs. 4 on a decent map. ANYTHING. Thankfully, they have Co-op mode where you can team up with buddies and play the AI. Heck, if Ubisoft can make a good multiplayer mode from Assassin's Creed series (a game I previously thought would be impossible to implement), Codemasters should be able to do it for this.

The good:

I love the Tajikistan setting. I found Dragon Rising to be a little dull because of the Skira Island setting. The setting in the middle east "feels" newer and fresh and current. Not much more to say about this.

The command menu is MUCH better than Dragon Rising. It's not nearly as cumbersome and after a single mission, you start memorizing some of the commands by reflex and really becomes a natural part of your gameplay. Instead of taking time to put the "point" behind a wall then look up to make sure you issue a hold position command, it becomes nearly reflex [up, right]. The quick ability to select one person of your squad to issue commands to is very nice. Move as a team or select certain people to put in certain positions. It is pretty cool to issue a command to secure a building and your team just goes about its business and starts clearing rooms and hearing that communication, slightly "humanizing" your squad.

Everything else is very well done. The missions appear to be actual missions you would perform in the middle east (clearing towns, protecting convoys and EOD teams, setting up a defensive position against enemies in trucks that are coming that you got from intel from your chain of command). The graphics are very nicely done long range, as there are some breathtaking views on the horizon. I've read that the graphics up close are not that good. I would honestly argue they are on par with COD (to me, COD can appear flat, or without depth at times).

The biggest thing for me is the no nonsense story and presentation. While it's not perfect (see above), for me, it beats the Hollywood theatrics that Call of Duty enlists and Bad Company 2 tries to mimic in their campaigns. In this sense, this is incredibly real, though holding a medpack in front of you magically fixes everything is not.

For consoles, this might be the most realistic shooter you can get, aside from Dragon Rising. Reviewed from PS3 version. This is nothing like ARMA II or those ultra realistic games, so keep that in mind if you love that side of the fence. This game fills that niche between ARMA II/OPF CWC and Bad Company series. This is pretty much where I fall and what I want from a military FPS.

Thanks for reading.

Score: 8/10.

Having played Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising I was hesitant to even try this game. Imagine my surprise when I discovered the problems that were prevelant in Dragon Rising had been dealt with in Red River. For one, running in this game doesn't make you motion sick because it doesn't feel like you are on a pogo stick. Second, the gun shakes about how it would in real life, unlike DR which made you think your arm was a jackhammer. The gameplay is fun and realistic without being too frustrating, and the maps are wide open, allowing you to get creative with your sight lines and angle of approach. All in all, definately good for someone looking to try for a change of pace from the usual Battlefield and CoD.

If you got a clan or some friends to play with, this can be hella fun. If not, you will be pissed at the lack of no multi-player ... extremely realistic and very fun and a great game if your tired of the COD nonsense.

The graphics are good and so is gameplay. Some parts can be difficult especially when you have to control your fireteam. AI suck unless you are constantly giving them commands. Despite that, this is an overall a great game for first person shooter fans.

I got this as my 3rd controller for my ps3 slim, and I must say I'm pretty impressed with it. Comes with the internal battery that charges just like the regular controllers, uses the same blue-tooth system that the Original controllers do(so no using up a usb port with the wireless transmitter like some other 3rd party products do) The middle P3 button (PS3 on sony's controllers) works perfect, It works pretty much flawlessly, the feel of the trigger buttons is a little different, but still work great.

The only thing that I have a little issue with is the left thumb click, while holding up and trying to click it, its a little tough, this may only be this controller because every other direction and the other thumb stick click just fine, even so, as I said I'm very impressed. I've used other generic controllers before and this is by far the best one that I've used yet. So if you're looking for another controller, but don't want to drop $40-55 on the actual Sony controllers I'd recommend this, I'm probably going to get another one for myself. If I have any problems with it in the future I will update this post.

Update: After having it for a few months, sometimes after playing for 20 or so minutes the controller starts to "lag" I'll move and it will take a second for it to respond on the game, but this could be because I'm using this about 20 feet away from the console.

I was looking for a cheap alternative to the Dualshock controller from Sony, which I can't believe costs $50. After seeing a lot of cheap knock-offs, and seeing that this one had a pretty good rating, I decided to pick it up. I can attest, that it works just fine, and is a fine alternative to the dual shock controller.

A note on the downloadable content:

You get 5 really sweet Chrome Line cars (427 Shelby Cobra, BMW M3, Audi R8, Lambo Mercy, MB 300SL).

A note on the "Collector's Edition":

-I destroyed the custom packaging trying to get the game out; "Custom" equates to a bigger box with fancier cardboard.

-The keychain is decent, but I probably won't use it for anything.

-The die-cast model is cool albeit a little on the small side.

-The book is awesome. It has tips on everything from suspension and engine oil to the rule of thirds when taking pictures. There's also a listing of all the car makes/models in the back.

If you have your own music on the PS3, I recommend making a playlist of driving music before starting the game. You have the option to play your own music while racing.

The game asks if you want to install data files onto the PS3. This is supposed to speed up various processes in the game by taking up 8GB of HDD space. Just as a word of warning on this, the prompt says 20 minutes, but it was twice that for me, in addition to various initialization screens. This could be because of my aftermarket HDD. I don't know for sure. Also, be careful when peeling the silver sticker off the promo insert. You don't want to risk tearing the paper and losing your downloadable content.

I also wanted to give a shout-out to Amazon for delivering it to me 5 days earlier than estimated.

Car notables for me in GT5...

Old:

Plymouth Superbird

Mercury Cougar XR-7

RUF CTR "Yellow Bird"

New:

Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670-4 Super Veloce

HPA Motorsports FT565 Twin Turbo Audi TT

It's like GT had a high school reunion, but also invited the new kids.

New GT5 features:

-You need to create a driver BEFORE you start any races. I assumed that the game wouldn't let me use DC cars in A/B-Spec races so I blew my seed money on a used car out of ignorance.

-Selectable Soundtracks You can choose from various music genres.

-B-Spec is comparable to GT4, but a new feature is that your driver will get agitated by his surroundings, i.e. the computer getting all Dale Earnhardt on your bumper.

More to come.

Please note, this is a review of the value added items included with the Collector's Edition of Gran Turismo 5. A proper review of the game itself is not possible without investing a great deal of time in it, as Polyphony Digital has packed this game with SO MUCH content for absolute automotive enthusiast to digest(this is a good thing!)

Collector's Edition Box and packaging: It's an attractive package/box that folds open, encased in an embossed, branded slip cover. Will look nice on display. Upon folding the box open, the spine, glue, and binding separated, leaving ugly exposed white portions, like a poorly removed sticker. This was disappointing. The contents on the other hand, were neatly packed and fit into each compartment with no risk of destroying the packaging when removing each item or placing them back inside.

The stainless steel keychain looks good from far, but on close inspection, mine had visible pitting and burrs. Laser etching of the GT5 logo was good, but the machining of the keychain itself was poor. I've seen Chinese manufactured, unlicensed GT branded stuff of better quality. Kind of disappointing. Nonetheless, it's still going on my keychain.

The die cast GT5 R35 GTR is really sweet. Very good detail work, decal placement is precise, and will make for a great addition for collectors of die cast cars. I would have preferred a die cast Mercedes SLS or a Ford GT, but the GTR is really quite well done.

The Apex car guide is a nice little book. Not quite large enough as a coffee table piece, but the content is great. The book goes into great detail with the minutiae of various motor's inner workings, driving dynamics, and many other automotive related subjects. I did notice a couple editing errors (duplicate words, missing punctuation), but they are easily overlooked. The content is very Japanese centric in its approach to notable automotive historical events; this may upset some people. Paper stock is ok, but mine had some waviness to the pages. I anticipate that I'll read this book several times, over a series of bathroom trips.

Unlockable cars (M3, 427 Shelby Cobra, Audi R8, Murcielago, 300SL) are very cool.

Certificate of Authenticity It's authentic alright! Just don't believe you have a super rare thing with the collector's edition. My serial number was in the 42,000's-that's more Collector's Editions out there than sales numbers in a year for some games.

Overall, the Collector's Edition value added items are good, but the quality is hit and miss. I am satisfied with the purchase, but if I wasn't in such a rush to play this game after waiting for so long, I would wait until after Christmas when you could probably snag the Collector's edition for a bit less. I'd recommend the Collector's Edition for hardcore fans of the series and fans of all things automotive.

As far as the game goes, I am greatly enjoying it so far and looking forward to the countless hours I will inevitably spend trying to get 100%.

...these are really nice straps, very excellent quality, but I would not trust the stability factor. They are currently on two different Guitar Hero guitars and each has been used twice since the addition of these straps. The straps have fallen off each time the guitars are used and I have no idea why, because neither of the straps were twisted at any point during the usage. I have yet to test them on a real guitar, but I don't think it will turn out any better...

This is an outstanding controller. Very comfortable to hold and all buttons are in easy reach. It is already perfectly set up for use with the Street Fight IV & the default button configuration. Moves requiring quarter, half & full circle movements are incredibly easy do, thanks to the floating digital pad. And they can be done consistently. It comes a with handy Turbo button which makes characters like Chun-Li & E. Honda especially dangerous.

My only problem with the controller & its floating digital pad is that it may be too sensitive sometimes. For characters that require charge attacks or precise up and down movements of the digital pad for combos, the Dualshock 3/Six-axis controller is actually easier to use & more consistent.

If you have PS3 then you already have the standard controller & I highly suggest you try out the Fight Pads to get the most out of this game. It will probably come in handy for other fighting games as well. I fully intend to use this pad on Tekken.

Yes, this makes SF4 much more playable. A throwback Sega six button pad. The d-pad is not quite Sega style but its pretty good for fireballing motions. However, charge characters who need precise angles to execute like Balrog, you'll find your self doing dash lows, when you want to do a dash strait. You'll also find yourself doing dragon punches when you wanted to do the double motion for an ultra. A little sensitive it is.

On the shoulder buttons, they have a nice click and feel to them. Though, I wish the left shoulder was more like a trigger. The positioning kinda stinks. This button gives me all hell with ultras needing PPP. Your lf index finger needs to "curl" to press this button considering your thumb is on the d-pad.

ON the build quality, its a lot better than people have been complaining about. In the beginning the D-pad was a little "clicky" and would stick in some positions, but you need to break in in a bit.

Look, if you are serious about SF, you need a stick. This pad is 3 times as good as the PS3 pad, but 10 times worse than a stick. I opted not to go with a stick because, though I'm becoming a SF nerd, I want to be able to play with a controller for when the guys come over, not an expensive nerdy arcade stick. But I'm temped every time I cant pull off a complex link combo. The thumb is just not as dexterous as your middle fingers. But the stick is cost restrictive, so this is the next best option.

Overall good, but only if you are slightly more than a casual SF4 gamer but less than an aspiring expert.

*******UPDATE 4/13/2010************

*sigh* I really wanted this to work. But 3 months later of 20 hrs per week play time and the controller started sticking in some buttons, randomly cutting off in the middle of heated matches and lastly, button presses registering incorrectly. (PPP started coming out as MP. wth?)

Horrible quality but alas there are no real options other than getting a nerdy stick at this point..

*******UPDATE 6/22/2010************

Ok, I broke down and got a joystick. This pad really isn't worth it if your putting more than 10-20 hours a week into this game I think. It still is an upgrade from the stock pad but the quality is so shabby with extended use. You'll end up buying at least 2 in your SF lifetime and at that point you should have just gotten a stick. (It will take you a month to get used to the stick)

As a final note here...The Pad warrior tourney players DO NOT use this pad. Many of them use the stock ps3 pad. I think that says a lot overall about this product.

Buy Sony PS3 Street Fighter IV FightPad - Ken Now

After struggling to do all the old special moves I know and love on the usual "split" D-pad of the PS3 controller and getting my rear handed to me, I decided it was time to go "old school" and return to my Sega roots. I'm so glad I did. This controller is not only slightly faster and more comfortable to play with, but the disc D-pad is far easier to use. Well worth the purchase if you're tired of the idiotic arrow buttons or over-sensitive sticks of your normal controller.

Read Best Reviews of Sony PS3 Street Fighter IV FightPad - Ken Here

On a whim I preordered this controller from Amazon earlier this week. Mostly because I felt that anything would be better than the standard button layout of the Dual Shock 3 controller. I have been using the Fightpad ever since I got it in the mail and it is fantastic.

Every design of this controller is focused for fighting games, the directional pad has a smooth motion to it but with positive feedback. Quarter circle and hold moves are extremely fluid and can be performed reliably, which can't be said about the Dual Shock's dpad. The buttons are in an ergonomic position so none of them are difficult to reach. The system buttons are all recessed so they won't be pushed during a battle, and there are turbo functions to ease pulling off some of the more difficult combos.

I have always been skeptical of Madcatz products but these controllers are wonderfully designed and serve their purposes well. Sadly these controllers are not backwards compatible so they won't work with your PS2 or PS1 games. At least I couldn't get it to work.

Want Sony PS3 Street Fighter IV FightPad - Ken Discount?

This controller feels great in your hands. Love the click of the buttons, but the D-pad does take some getting used to. It's so large playing as charge characters...can be more of a challenge than usual. All in all though...if you put in the time...you'll be rewarded.

This game is not that bad. It doesn't have mind blowing graphics like a next gen game should. It is sort of like Fat Princess meets Little Big Planet. I paid $60 bucks for it and honestly it is not worth that much. This is a $30 game at best. It is fun chopping up characters and skating around in their blood, but it does get old especially when it is not an open environment. The boss levels are a bit challenging so there is some hope. Unfortunately, you never really die. I mean you do, but you keep coming back to where you left off. There are 50 trophies to get, if anything that should keep you interest for a while. I tried to play online, but I don't think a whole lot of people own this game yet (nobody there). This game will probably become more popular as the price drops. It is fun and the animations are humorous so if you got cash to burn or you have a twisted sense of humor like myself then add this game to your collection otherwise rent it or wait till the price drops.

I thought this game was great, its a good game to play if you just want something that takes NO strategy or thinking, its just a good old fashioned hack and slash! I gave this game a 5 star review based on the price i paid. I got it used on Amazon Warehouse deals, and only paid $9.99, and it was worth every penny. I say if you get it for under $14.99 it will hold its 5 stars.

$15.00 $19.99 4 Stars

$20.00 $24.99 3 Stars

$25.00 or more 2 stars, (wait till you can get it cheaper!)

If you scale down the flaws in the game and compare it to the price you get it for, i think you can overlook some quirks here and there and have yourself a really good game!

Overall, this is a fun game to play. As others stated, the camera angle gets a little funky at times. Turning the zoom feature off definitely helps, though. Please read the other reviewers' comments regarding how good this game is (or isn't). My only comment is that the description suggests that it has both online and split-screen co-op multiplayer. That is not correct. The game only supports online co-op, not split screen. Hope this helps you from making the same mistake that I did.

Before you go thinking that I'm one of those cranky people who leaves a one-star rating because of some fluke issue that only applies to me, you should know that the experience I'm about to describe was shared by a friend of mine who bought this game (we were going to play the online co-op) as well as countless other people on discussion threads you can look up on Google with keywords like "mercenaries ps3 freezing" or "mercenaries ps3 not working."

As I said, my friend and I each bought our own copy of this game through Amazon.com. I was able to download the latest update to the game, but when I clicked the Start button, a message came up saying "Connecting to EA Servers..." and then everything froze. Not only the game, but the entire PS3 console froze. I had to reboot. Every time I tried to get into the game, it kept freezing my PS3 console. I never even got a chance to PLAY the game.

My friend and I have since done some research on Google. Apparently, EA has taken down its servers for this game, and/or it's no longer supporting this game. In other words, they're happy to continue selling it, as is Amazon, and taking your money -but whether you can actually play the game seems not to matter to them.

If EA gave a damn, they would simply recall the game entirely, or add a disclaimer on the Amazon detail page for this product saying that they no longer support the online functionality on this game. But no such disclaimer exists. Instead it says "Play solo or in cooperative multiplayer mode" as if that functionality still works properly. And it DOESN'T.

I contacted Amazon customer service and they are allowing me to return the game for a full refund, even though I already opened it (never played it). Kudos to Amazon for that, although I'm still rating this a one-star product. Of course the hours my friend and I spent trying to make this game work, we will never get back. Mercenaries 2 is one of those games that is simply there for the fun factor, it's not necessarily there for the storyline or depth. It is just there to give you a hell of a crazy and over the top game that you can just pick up and go nuts with. There's not much to say about it as, like I say it's not very deep in regards to a storyline. Your basic goal is to win the trust of factions and do jobs for them, blowing up buildings, collecting bounties etc. That's basically it and depending on who you are it depends on you carrying out the mission covertly or with all guns blazing.

The main gem of this game is the surprising look and detail of it as due to the size of the map and the destructability, the detail of it is excellent and the displaying of the tropical setting is truly jaw dropping. The vehicles are plenty and range from heavy set high artillery tanks to fast sport cars. Other vehicles such as army helicopters and a range of boats also allow the game to be more flexible and fun.

I must admit that I use the cheats whilst playing the game and just like going nuts and blowing everything up. One of the cooler weapons in the game is the introduction of the Nuclear Bunker Buster. That's right a Nuclear bomb at your disposal. It's not the type of Nuke you'd expect but it's still pretty awesome to target a building and watch the mushroom cloud expel from the grouns with flames afoot.

My review isn't very detailed, but there you go. If I had to tell you one thing that would make you buy this game it would be this. This game is just so much fun I'm not even kidding. Try blowing up an oil rig and then try to tell me that isn't the coolest thing you've done on a game.

If you like this sorta game as much as I do I recommend giving this one a try. They have it for the xbox 360 as well which ever system you chose it for its a very fun and enjoyable game. Very good for stress management as you get to blow stuff up on it . You can even drive around in cool vehicles in some missions, Vehicles such as tanks, jeeps etc. I seen it advertised on G4tv long time ago and heard good reviews bout it figured I'd give it a try as well and it lives up to its reputation as a great game.

I've been waiting to play this game ever since the first one came out and I was not let down. You can call in air strikes, helicopters, planes, boats you name it you can get it that also goes for the explosions because in this world you can blow up absolutely everything. Have you ever played a game like this (cough* GTA) and you were pissed that you fire off a rocket into a building and nothing happens?? Well, you don't have to worry about it here you can demolish anything you want. You can strap C-4 to the hood of your vehicle, drive it 100 mph down the street, jump out and blow up anything that is in your way enemies and buildings included.

Some people will complain, the graphics aren't top notch or they didn't like the story....I personally just like watching things go boom. That's just me though I could really care less about the story because in a game like this it doesn't really matter. The game is about creating chaos and mayhem not worrying about how the character feels inside.

I love this game and I would recommend this to anyone that wants to have a good time.
