I am a huge fan of the Soul series. I remember sinking quarters into the arcade over a decade ago. When Soul Calibur first came out on the home consoles, it was like a dream come true. Many hours were spent playing that game instead of working on papers in college. Soul Calibur 3 was definitely my favorite. I even had the chance to work on the artwork for the UFS card game based on SC3. I think my huge involvement and love of Soul Calibur, especially the SC3, is what ultimately led to some of my disappointment with Soul Calibur 4...

The good:

-The graphics are incredible! The animations are smooth and the characters move with a beautiful fluidity. The faces in particular look much better with each iteration, and SC4 definitely made leaps and bounds in the character models.

-Online play at last! Not once did I experience lag. It's fun to practice on the CPU, but far more fun to take on complete strangers. Even if you lose, you get to see how other people play and you start improving so when your friends come over, you can summarily embarrass them.

-Best character-creation mode EVER. Sure SC4 did not reward you non-stop with character-creation items the way SC3 did, but the depth of the new system is something you have to experience to appreciate. I love the amount of customization you're allowed, though I miss the CC-unique fighting styles.

-Tower of Lost Souls. They call it that because you will sink hours of your life there.

-A cool tag-team dynamic that lets you switch characters in the middle of a fight. Definitely useful when you need a variety of styles.

-Critical Finishes are cool when conditions are right and you can pull them off. I'd rather be beaten with one of those than a Ring Out any day.

The bad:

-Yoda is cheap. You can't even grab him. In fact, the Star Wars characters seem FAR out of place, but this isn't the first time SC has done crossovers. What bugged me the most is that the Character Creation didn't allow you to make Jedi characters. How utterly unfair to add the license but not allow customized lightsaber wielders.

-No Team Versus battles. I can't understand why they would remove this, maybe Namco believed if you wanted to play against another human, it's better to do so online in standard/special vs mode?

-The storyline seems extremely thin, and the character endings are pretty lacking compared to SC3. There's no interactivity in the cutscenes or endings and some of the hidden characters don't even get animated endings.

-There are no shop girls from SC3!

-Chronicles of the Sword is gone. It was one of my favorite modes from Soul Calibur 3. It contributes to my overall feeling of a lack of story in this game.

I love most of the additions to the game, including the game modes and some of the new characters. I can't understand why Namco chose to remove some of the modes from the previous game though. They really need to release more downloadable content too. On its own, this is a fantastic game. It has great graphics, a balanced fighting system and enough features to keep you busy for a while. The character creation is something all fighting games should learn from. But ultimately, if compared to past games of the series, you get a sense that this game seems a bit rushed in the substance department. I hope this isn't really supposed to be the last of the Soul Calibur series, because it didn't really tie up a lot of the characters stories in my opinion.

When the mechanics of a game franchise are fundamental to its success it is best not to tinker too much with how it controls and feels overall. The newest SC suffers from this slightly as it does feel like the same old game, but that is also its strength. There isn't anything new that takes away from the core enjoyment of this supreme fighter because other than the new SW characters everything is meshed together for a smooth experience. The new critical finish comes into play so little as to non existent. There is alot under what appears a shallow surface, however. The character creation only gets fun once you master it and unlock the cool equipment and weapons. Ideally the game wants you to take everyone through its 5 chapter story mode offering but the hardcore restart elements of mission mode (my favorite part of the old game(s) are redone in the somehow less fufilling TOWER mode(it is lacking the storyline text& map that made the original missions more fun.) Survival mode is redone as a backward crawl into the dungeon of the tower. The unlockables come easier but it feels right as this is a more challenging SC as well. Changes like these and the customizable skill and equipment set make SCIV VERY replayable. I know this my thumbs still burn especially after taking the unwieldy DARTH VADER through arcade mode which took me longer than I care to admit. Darth V. is tough to control as he should be with his mechanical legs, his forces powers and throws are tougher to use but with practice he can be worth the effort. The story text for each character is enjoyable, and the incredibly deep moves list for each fighter is accessible from the pause menu as always. SCIV is frustratingly hard at the right moments, and addictive in all the right places with an abundance of strategy and configurability, that plus its satisfying catalogue of fighters will have this disc running hot in my PS3 for awhile. BTW The install feature to hard drive doesn't shave as much off the load times as I was hoping for but I like having the option.

I'm not much of a video game reviewer, and I'm certainly not a "serious gamer" but I do enjoy blowing off an hour or two every once in a while playing games. Up until we rented this on gamefly I had never played a Soul Caliber game before. I enjoy fighting games provided there are some speedy characters involved. My Hubby and I enjoyed this game enough to pay the extra loot to "keep the game" so we are now the proud owners of Soul Caliber IV.

What I liked:

1) I didn't have to hit 40 sequential buttons to get the character to do something cool, in fact my inner button masher was quite happy with the moves that I was able to do right off just by smashing in patterns.

2) The graphics are good, the surrounding areas are cool to look at and you can smash up your surroundings, which is always fun. The playable characters come in a wide variety and all look fairly good (some of the women are ridiculously proportioned but whatever). They have a variety of weapons that are quite fun and all look great.

3) The characters level, meaning the more you play with one, the more options you get with them.

4) The online option is interesting, but for some reason the pairing doesn't seem up to snuff, I mean why would the computer match up a level 1 with a level 41? It seems that it should be a bit more balanced as to who it sets up against who.

5) The tower is a blast, and it's HARD! basically you have to fight different groups of baddies on each level of the tower to ascend to the next one... we're on level 20 or so now and it's no walk in the park! The good thing is that each level has a way for you to unlock another article of clothing to use in your character creation.

6) Character creation, this can be quite fun, and I'm really bad at it. My hubby can spend over an hour tweeking his dude... I just slap some clothes on them and go.

7) The other options are your standard Arcade mode and the story mode, both of which allow you to unlock different playable characters.

What I don't care for:

1) When you are either beating the tar out of someone or they are laying the smack down on you, armor can break... effectively leaving your character almost completely in the nude. Now I'm not sure who gets their jollies from video game semi-naked people, but I'm not one of them.

2) It would be great if the female characters weren't trapsing about with their boobs hanging out wearing thongs... and the closeups of the boobs and booties gets to be rather tiresome... men wonder why more women don't play video games... this is one of the reasons.

3) The commercial showed Darth Vader fighting Yoda... um... you only get Vader on the PS3 version, apparently Yoda is on the Xbox version. It would have been nice to have had both.

4) The loading times from fight to fight get a bit tiresome, especially in the tower when you just got your derrier handed to you and you have to re-fight the same guy for the 15th time and there you are; waiting for 2 minutes or more to reload the battle.

5) In the character creation I should be able to pick some better undergarments for my people just in case all of their clothes get busted off so that they aren't standing there in a bra and thong.

Still, I love the game, it's an absolute blast and well worth a purchase (especially used)

Overall I'm quite disspointed with this game.

Let's break it down though.

Graphics 5/5: As far my opinion goes, this is the most graphically superior fighting game there is at the moment, the scenes are beautifully rendered and the characters are rich in detail.

Controls 5/5: The controls never change and no exceptions here, the game is easy and can be jumped right into.

Character Creation 1/5: What a HUGE step back here...SC:III had so many innovative things here a "profession" made it feel unique and special. Now it's just "What character do you want to rip off?!" Which is extremely lame and lazy in my opinion. The different combos of clothings/faces are alright not as extravagant was SC:III was.

New Features 2/5: The "Tower" is quite bland and more like just a scenario mode nothing overly special about it.

The online mode I will admit I haven't tried yet but...I imagine it's no different then having someone sitting aside of you playing. I most certainly miss the strategy mode as it gave a real personal feeling to the game.

Main Guts of the Game 2/5: Let me start by saying the Star Wars characters compared to the rest of the group...are ridiculously overpowered. In Arcade mode you go from classic SC scenese to a...space ship? To fight "The Apprentice?" What the @#$@? The Apprentice is ridiculously over powered and if you're playing on medium expect hard diffuculty Hard expect Soul Edge...etc...The first time I went through I spent around 1 min. on each opponent and 9 min. on The Apprentice.

The story mode is VERY dissaspointing as it starts with about a 4-5 paragraph introduction then just like...arcade mode until the last fight. About a 1 minute clip a sentence or two pops up on the screen...that's it. Not a whole lotta point to "Story Mode" if you don't actually make the character have a FREAKIN' STORY!

Overall: I wish I would have rented this game instead of paying salty for it...It's just...not as good as any of it's previous bretheren. I'd be even willing to say a step BACK.

With Soul Calibur V hitting store shelves, it seemed apt to go back for a change and pick up Soul Calibur IV. The game came out in the midst of the revival of the fighting genre. It had to compete with the likes of Street Fighter IV, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, Tekken 6, and BlazBlue just to name a few contenders. In terms of sheer combat and gameplay, Soul Calibur IV is remarkable. It may, in fact, be the most fun of all the Soul Calibur games from a multiplayer standpoint.

Story has rarely been a strong suit for Soul Calibur. The relationship between characters is often interesting, but aside from that the main story isn't quite as interesting. Soul Calibur IV seems to be self aware of this as the actual story mode with each character is really short and isn't really filled with a lot of story at all. There is, however, a nice little handy chart that gives you character biographies and shows the relationship between characters that actually can make the cast of Soul Calibur IV interesting. And while the story mode is laughable, each character has their own journey you can play through. It consists of five battles. Two standard fights, a mid boss, another standard battle and finally the actual boss. It's a simple thing, but seeing as how you've got quite a few stories to play through it can suffice. For those who just want straight shot battling there is always the Arcade Mode which puts you through eight different battles where you score as many points as you can and finish as fast as you can.

As far as single player content goes, Soul Calibur IV doesn't quite go to the depths of the second or third installment. There is the Arcade and Story Mode. There is also the Extra Arcade Mode and Extra Versus, which we'll talk about shortly. At the very least, however, Soul Calibur IV does have the Tower of Souls which can be quite attractive to those looking for a challenge. Here you can either ascend or descend the tower. Ascending has you going to different floors and taking on various challenges. Such as taking on a horde of enemies with only a single life gauge, or defeating an enemy before time runs out. There are also bonuses and unlockable content to behold should you fulfill certain conditions in some of the challenges. For example, you might just have to defeat the enemy, but the game might reward you with treasure (usually a piece of equipment) or gold if you do something more such as pull of three grabs in a match, or switch characters three times, or perform a certain amount of impacts. It gives you reason to play through some of the challenges a second or third time.

Descending is a different story. This is effectively a survival mode with a strange boss character appears every five floors. It's much more of a challenge than previous survival modes. As you descend your health will regenerate a small amount should you emerge victorious on each floor. But it is definitely a challenge.

The Tower of Souls is indeed a nice addition but it has nothing on the single player content offered by Soul Calibur II or III. On the other hand what you do get is an extremely good multiplayer suite. And when I say good, I mean VERY good. Soul Calibur IV has one of the best multiplayer experience of the entire series. The single player stuff will be over and done with soon (depending on how well you can get through the tower of souls, that is) but the multiplayer almost never gets old. It's fast paced and intricate in the sense that newcomers and veterans will be able to step on in. There are complex combos and such for those familiar with Soul Calibur, but for those just learning the series for the first time, there are plenty of simple moves to pull off. Although this can lead to some people winning fights through button mashing, it's still a ton of fun given that anyone can pick up and play, and those who have already learned Soul Calibur aren't exactly punished thanks to what it offers. It's always fun to pull of a surprisingly difficult combo and watch it succeed. Especially because everything is flashy. Soul Calibur IV also offers up a nice handicap system so that people can play according to their own experience and style against someone else. Are you a beginner playing against an expert? You can set your total health to be higher and his to be lower to give you a fighting chance. And the game leaves this up to be your choice.

There are certain elements to Soul Calibur IV's combat that make it stand above all else. The first and most obvious change from the third game is that every person in battle has a piece of armor they wear. There are three. Top, middle and bottom. Dealing enough damage causes a piece of armor to break. If the armor breaks, attacks that correspond to that area will deal more damage (i.e. if your top armor breaks, high attacks will do more damage). It adds an element of desperation when all your armor pieces are broken.

The second big new element is the critical finish. These are really flashy attacks that seem clearly inspired by Mortal Kombat's fatalities. The idea behind critical finishes is genius, although the stipulations for pulling one off are quite hard to obtain in a battle. You're likely to see one or two, but you won't use them that often. In past games, players were known to block. A lot. Critical Finishes were implemented for to punish those who relied far too heavily on blocking. Every character has a Soul Gauge. The more attacks you land the brighter it glows until it's blue. The more attacks you block the weaker it gets until your gauge is red. When you're gauge is red and starts flashing your next guard might cause you to stagger. At this point your opponent can execute a Critical Finish. A critical finish is just that... a critical finish. It doesn't matter how much life you have left, the battle ends. You're more likely to actually pull these off on CPU opponents rather than actual players, however. The critical finish definitely discourages blocking, but you're rarely likely to need them. Like Mortal Kombat's fatalities, you'll be interested to see everyone's, but in order for that to happen you'll likely end up going into the training mode and setting it up to easily see it for yourself.

What really makes Soul Calibur IV's multiplayer fun is that there are a ton of fighters to choose from. Certainly there are clones, but the various fighting styles and diverse move lists of the characters make it so that everyone will be able to find someone they can play as with little to stand in their way. But a layer of strategy is actually added to Soul Calibur IV thanks to the ability to create custom characters.

While custom characters will be based off the style of other characters, there's actually quite a bit you can do with them. There are tons of different outfits to put on and tons of different weapons to unlock. And you'll slowly unlock all of this stuff as you play. And there is a lot to unlock, giving you incentive to play through the Tower of Souls and to constantly revisit the various story modes. At least all of this is fun, but what makes it unique is the layer of strategy. The different pieces of equipment have an impact on stats. Mainly our HP, Attack and Defense. But they also enhance certain skillsets which will allow you to equip various skills. This not only gives you reason to jump in... but to experiment as well. There's a surprising amount of depth. You can also customize the characters who already exist and give them better weapons or equipment as well.

Figuring out just how to customize a character is actually a lot of work, however. If you're having trouble in the Tower of Souls it's likely because you need to create a custom character and assign abilities to them to give you the edge. And these abilities range from basic, "Increase attack power of vertical or horizontal strikees," to others that can be extremely helpful when you learn how to use them correctly, such as the Venom Fang or the Impact Heal. Yes, Soul Calibur IV will reward smart players. Especially in the Tower of Souls, which seems to be catered toward the hardcore of Soul Calibur. Button mashing in the Tower of Souls will get you no where, but creating characters with the right skill set for the right challenge definitely will. If you don't actually take time to learn the various mechanics of the system... the Tower of Souls WILL crush you. And this is why Soul Calibur IV manages to have depth where it's sequel does not. It's important to master the various guard impacts. It's important to figure out which pieces of armor to put on to improve which stat... and which weapons to use based on their attacks or the inherent skills they may possess. Soul Calibur IV can be surprisingly addicting just based off this mechanic alone. Mainly because it gives you a lot of different ways to approach some of the challenges brought up by the Tower of Souls (or to power your way through each character's story mode).

You can also use custom characters with their weapons and abilities in Versus Mode as well. You can also do this for arcade mode. And this can really make the multiplayer aspect fun. And even those who just want to use them for aesthetic purposes can do this, as the "Standard Versus" grants no actual bonuses based on your weapons or equipment.

This all adds up to make Soul Calibur IV more fun than meets the eye. The extra layer of strategy used by this as well as how the game encourages players to learn the mechanics through the Tower of Souls. You could easily spend hours on Soul Calibur IV thanks to this. But playing against friends is also a lot of fun. Especially when you both design custom characters and go into the Extra Versus Mode.

Namco will not skimp on the presentation of a Soul Calibur game and it shows. Soul Calibur IV is by far one of the most gorgeous looking and detailed games you'll find this generation. Characters move smoothly and in conjunction with their weapon. The stages you'll fight in are also incredibly detailed. Soul Calibur IV has excellent presentation coupled with a great soundtrack to present it. The music is absolutely astonishing. As are the sound effects. In terms of production the game is just all around good. Degrading as always, however, is the voice acting. Although by now fans are probably immune to it. Some of the cheesiness of the characters dialog may even be comforting. There's not too much of it, though. And it's not like you'll want to jab your ears with something sharp that you'll go deaf. Eventually the voice acting just becomes background noise. The voices themselves actually compliment the characters. What might be the take away is that some of the lines are just not so great. Take the announcer who, upon gaining victory just simply says, "Victory belongs to the last one standing..." you kind of expect him to say more but it just ends there. The words are spoken but it doesn't feel like they were there to mean anything. Just feels like they were spoken because they know it can be done at times.

If anything, Soul Calibur IV is a great game to play. The multiplayer, especially, is incredibly addictive. The game also goes online. Your mileage is likely to vary from one match to the next. I played in some rounds that did me some good, but I connected to some that just simply weren't playable. For the most part the experiences were good rather than bad. From a multiplayer standpoint, Soul Calibur IV is the best in the series. From a single player? That's a different story. While Soul Calibur IV offers enough, the previous outings offered much more content. While Soul Calibur IV will keep you busy to unlock all the various equipment, weapons, etc... you'll find that were it not for the multiplayer and in depth character customization you wouldn't really have a whole lot to actually do in Soul Calibur IV. At the very least, Soul Calibur IV actually lets you set up a battle against the CPU if you like... this is something that previous Soul Calibur games simply didn't do. If there wasn't a second controller plugged in you ONLY had access to the single player portion. Here you can set up exhibition battles against the computer if you simply don't feel like diving into the Arcade, Story or Tower of Souls modes. And yes, it's actually a lot of fun given how you can adjust the difficulty, life gauges and even set up battles among custom characters. This is, of course, nice if you simply don't want to go online for the moment or if there are no friends to fight against at the time. And because battling is so much fun, even going up against the CPU is perfectly fine. One could easily spend hours just setting up their own custom versus matches alone.

Soul Calibur IV manages to be fun because it's got mechanics that really work. The single player experience isn't quite as big as one would expect, but at least it offers up something for players. The multiplayer is fantastic, especially the online component and there is a lot of customization. It isn't quite the essential Soul Calibur in terms of a complete package, but from a multiplayer standpoint... it stands tall.

I started playing video games on PC back during thier infantcy during the early 90's. In the mid to late 90's Flight Sim and Space Flight Sim games were popular and in demand. Some REALLY good ones came out. A Favorite of mine was a game called "Independence War". With the increasing popularity of the console game system that really took off in the early 2000's up until now, Flight Sim games have made minimal advances and appearances through this period. Air*Conflicts is one of the few that does well in this genra. I wish that games like Independence War and Wing Commander would be re-designed using modern physics engines and HD graphics. But because I want it, It probably wont happen. sigh. Oh well.

I was hesitant to get this after the reviews, but after playing through the first level I'm not mad that I did. It is no Skyrim or batman by any means but the theme is cool and it is different than all the other games in this genre that I have played. If you liked shadows of the damned, you will like this game. If you have 60 bucks to blow, this is good filler until kingdoms of amalar comes out next week. And contrary to another reviewer....you can shoot with no legs and you can use a sword/shoot with one arm.....you can also shoot with nothing but a head and two arms, but, as to be expected in a real situation, your shots go all over the place as you have nothing to help you aim. You can also do an attack with just your head. I dunno...i like weird games that don't fall into the cookie-cutter FPS...and this was a welcome change up.

I bought Neverdead after watching the trailers and thinking it was a pretty neat concept. Most mainstream reviews hated this game, which made me worry. It's also made by Rebellion, which has a pretty sketchy past when it comes to development.

The heart and soul of this game is the dismemberment feature, be it for solving puzzles or using your limbs in different means for combat. It makes sense in a way. When you have a protagonist that can't die, you need to have some kind of challenge. I never found it old (all be it sometimes frustrating) as you blow yourself up and all your parts go flying off in various directions. This leads to a mad dash (or roll via your head) to collect your limbs or out run monsters whose sole purpose is to eat your head. The upgrade system also works well, however it takes time to really power yourself up.

All the environments are decently done and the "destructible" settings add some flare. But don't think it's anywhere as destructible as Red Faction. It simply adds another element to the game.

I will say my two biggest problems with this game are the constant need to protect your partner (you can die very easily) and the insanely fast re-spawn rate of monsters. To constant escort mission of your partner is fine, but she dies so easily. She doesn't seem to be able to hold herself in battles at all. Granted it's nowhere as bad as say Knights Contract, but like most games with an AI guardian, it could be better. With the monster re-spawn, it can be insanely fast. Especially in an area where you cannot progress until you kill all the monsters and spawn points. This element gets rather frustrating later on, when you have multiple spawn points and you are surrounded by hordes of monsters.

All in all, Neverdead isn't a bad game. Yes its not worth 60 dollars, but if you need a time filler and need a decent game Neverdead would be a good choice. Just don't expect it to be anything amazing and it won't disappoint you.

But it is so awesome and deserves a better overall rating. I came on here right away to post this review using my phone lol!

Way too much negativity towards this game! It's fresh, original and I think it pisses people off just because it's not CoD. It uses a fun, unique mix of shooting, swordplay and limb combat that you won't get in any other game. The characters are a nice break from the norm and provide good entertainment and so far I'm loving all of it. The music is awesome. The graphics are good. And these days for the price a new copy is a steal. The swordplay controlled with the right stick works amazingly and just going around destroying the environment is fun in itself. Monsters also slice up according to swing direction, Bryce frowning while his decapitaded head flies through the air it's all just great. I thought losing limbs would be a pain but its beyond easy to regain them so no stress there.

Dodging and slicing feels cool and let's you keep those limbs too. I'll update more but so far. For this game to make this impression and have me do this review on my phone says something. Its a refreshing, especially if you've played as many games as I have. Happy gaming.

The game is fun for a while (2 or 3 hours), the rest is boring. The game has like 5 different enemies and you have to fight them again and again.

Want NeverDead Discount?

This game had a cool idea to it, but the execution was horrible. The controls are clunky, there is very limited variation in enemy type. The idea behind "never dying" was nice and fun at the beginning, but after the first 20 minutes it becomes extremely painful and grueling. In order to "lose" in the game, the woman who accompanies you has to be dropped to her knees and you have a time limit to save her. It's extremely annoying.

This game is NOT worth the 60 dollars. If you really wish to try this game for yourself, wait until it drops to 10/15 dollars or rent it for lower. SAVE YOUR MONEY!

Like others, I read all the horrible reviews out there for Risen 2 and almost didn't give it a chance. Turns out though that I'm happy I did as I really enjoyed playing through this game from beginning to end, despite some of the game's more noticeable flaws.

It doesn't surprise me that this game got panned by professional review sites as well as many modern gamers. The graphics are dated (at least on PS3 they are), there's texture tearing and pop-up, and some major drops in the frame rate when large enemies are on screen. Modern day videogame luxuries such as quest markers and frequent pop-up hints and instructions are absent. The learning curve is somewhat steep as you start out with very little guidance and your character is ill-equipped and weak, and it's not uncommon to get your butt kicked by even a measly sand devil (the goombas of the Risen 2 world), particularly if they outnumber you. Combat is clunky and your strategic options are initially very, very limited. I can admit that there were a few moments in the first 2-3 hours of playtime where I considered quitting because it seemed like a mess of a game.

But I stuck with it, and I'm glad I did. Despite its technical problems, I found that Risen 2 has a lot to offer than other games do not.

Foremost is the satisfaction that comes with playing a game that comes with so little of the modern handholding we've become accustomed to as gamers. There's no flowery 20 minute cinematic to kick off the game, followed by a 20 minute in-game tutorial that gradually introduces you to your move-set and onscreen HUD. You get a brief narration and then a short conversation and then you're in complete control of your character from then on. What you do at that point is up to you. You're told by an NPC to meet the Commandant on the fortress wall. There's no "quest marker" that constantly floats on your HUD to guide you to where the battlements are and there's no minimap. You have to explore the fortress and the grounds and learn the layout and where things and people are yourself. You don't even get a map to begin with.... you have to find, purchase, or be given one first. And you can't learn or develop some skills (like pickpocketing, lockpicking, intimidating) without the requisite gold pieces, and gold is in short supply early on, so you really have to get out and explore and be resourceful to scrounge up money any way you can so you can move on. You truly have to work to progress in this game as nothing is handed to you, which I found refreshing, engaging, and addictive.

The central theme in Risen 2 is exploration. You're given about eight or so islands/locales to explore (although only one is available initially) and a large part of the fun I had with the game was trekking around the vast woods, caves, beaches, and mountain tops searching for treasure while completing a metric buttload of quests (well over 300). Nothing in the game is randomly generated, so when you find a hidden chest in some nook or cranny, the treasure is something the developers wanted you to find there. A lot of time it is gold or sellable valuables, but you can also find more powerful weapons or ingredients/parts used to make something else. Creatures and monsters lurk everywhere and if you venture too far before you're ready, you will die quickly. But you will learn to either wait until you're stronger to come back or find some clever way around the enemies to avoid fighting them.

The combat is admittedly clunky and involves mostly mashing the attack button, at least at first. Depending on how you spend your Glory (experience points) and gold pieces, you can develop various skills in categories like blades, firearms, toughness, cunning, voodoo, etc, which allows for more variety in the fights (such as projectile weapons, magic, parry/riposte). How you build the character is up to you, but I found that the Firearms category was most beneficial since a musket with a low reload time and a large number of bullets will take down just about any foe (including the final boss) without any trouble. This approach, of course, sort of breaks the combat system, but I didn't find the combat to be a selling point of the game anyway. Also, if you don't want to use this approach, you can often depend on your near-indestructable AI teammate to aggro many of the enemies and allow you to get in some good strikes without getting blocked or hit back.

The Pirate/Voodoo story I thought was interesting and something different. Nothing that rocked my world, but engaging nontheless, and it kept me interested until the end. The banter between the main character and the various NPCs had me, more often than not, laughing at loud, especially in the last third of the game, and it's clear that the writers have a great sense of humor (and very Monkey Island-esque at that). I also really enjoyed the voice acting and found it completely believable for the most part, and I am honestly shocked that so many people thought it was bad. Really? Not everyone has to sound like Nolan North.

The musical score nicely fits the game world and environments. Sounds effects are appropriate, although your AI teammate (particularly one, Patty) makes the oddest buzzing noise when she's moving behind you and always made me feel like I was being pursued by some giant feral bumblebee.

I've mentioned some of the game's technical issues above, but aside from those, I experienced nothing else of note. And nothing gamebreaking for me...never had the game freeze. These days that's a victory in itself.

I can't comment on how this game relates to the first Risen game as I never played it.

________________

Overall, this game is not going to win any awards, but I had a really fun time playing it. My final time clocked in about 30 hours, which is pretty good bang for the buck in my opinion. If you are a completionist like me and go for all the side quests and search for all the hidden chests and items, then there's not going to be much to go back to a second time, unless you just like the story or characters.

I encourage those of you who have been playing games for a long time (and don't get hung up on graphics/animations/etc) to at least give this one a rental and see if it sticks with you.

Good:

-Unique Pirate theme and tropical settings including beautiful beaches, treacherous jungles, creepy caves and voodoo temples.

-Surprisingly good music that does a great job creating ambiance. Going in caves genuinely scares me thanks to this (and the fact that I'm stubborn about not wanting to use up torches lol).

-Lots of quests/exploring/collecting to do.

-Interesting combat: I admit, the combat at first in this game seems super boring, but once you are able to buy a few skills (faster attacks, power attacks, etc) it really improves.

-Tons of skills to learn: ranging from sword and gun skills, to voodoo, to sending a trained monkey through a window to rob a house for you lol.

Bad:

-The text is TINY, so unless you're right in front of your TV you will have a hard time reading it. For the console releases of this they really should have included an option to make it larger.

-Lots of pop-in textures.

-The in-game map isn't great because you can't zoom.

I was sceptical about getting this game because all the bad reviews and I figured why not,I liked the first one, people just expect everything should be easy like SKYRIM.Im only 5 hrs into it and it keeps getting better and better. The graphics are not that bad, the scenery is detailed with trees and plantlife that sway in the wind, colorful beaches and hidden caves. The battle system at first might seem like a button masher but you can learn skills for swords, guns, fists, cunning which has skills like sneaking, lockpicking and pick pocket, also skills for voodoo(black magic). At first some enemies might seem tough, that just means you arent strong enough for that area yet, you will spend alot of time and gold learning skills and getting the best equipment. So far there are alot of quests and odd jobs to do in the game and one thing ive noticed is when doing quests you have to pay attention to what people say cuz there are no point A to point B cursors to hold your hand, you actually have to look and pay attention to things, which is what i like about games like this, there is a feature that you can go through and read past conversations with NPC's if you missed something.I have not had a chance to get going on the story yet as I like to do alot of questing first before I blow through the story. So ignore all the bad reviews people tend to cry more when they actually have to put effort into something, when they expect to have everything given to them,And if you think the graphics are bad than go buy a better tv for crying out loud.

Loved this game! How much you say? Well I played it all the way through twice and had to grind about 4 hrs extra just to get the last trophy for the platinum(dumb trophy by the way) The game is quite humorous and fun and can easily take 40-50hrs on the first playthrough. My only complaint is the combat which was much better in the first game. Why did they take away block? Who knows? Play it on easy and it is a blast. I know this game did not sell so well but I still hope that there may be a sequel someday for the next gen!

but since i am.. i'm giving it 4.

The good:

-The game looks great and especially when your webslinging through NY at night time.

-They've added a God of War kick to it. You're now involved in the cinematic action scenes. I think i'm about half way through and the extra moves that can be unlocked is kinda cool.

-You can now walk inside some buildings for certain missions.

-Added different missions

( disarming bombs, taking pictures, taking MJ for web slinging field trip )

The bad:

-Even though the game looks great, there are alot of graphic bugs.

( alot of seaming and clipping )

-Collision problems

( Characters getting pushed into walls, enemies get stuck )

-A.I. needs help.

(enemies will run away.. are simply just stare at you)

-I wish they would've implented a good soundtrack.

-Not sure about this complaint of mine, but i wish or hope.. that i'll be able to play a villian when i beat the game. I heard you can play the goblin... but.. i'd rather play sandman or venom.

Overall, its a good game. If your a spidey fan, its a great game. it's always fun to swing around the city.

Spider-man 3 does its movie counterpart absolutely no justice in this poorly, and lazily done game. This does not seem much better than Spider-man 2 for the PS2. There is a few new additions in there. Such as a slightly improved combat system, a fresh coat of paint, and a little bit of reflection on some surfaces. The combat system seems terribly incomplete, almost no transition between moves, no fluidity at all, it just felt rushed.

Bosses and some missions felt unnecessarily frustrating, unable to see some enemies, while they would attack what you were trying to protect. I also had several problems with mission "coins" disappearing. Stupidly powerful enemies that stopped taking damage after you had given them an unrelenting beating for nearly 10 minutes, knocking them over countless times.

The "God of War"-esque button system is really innovative, and absurdly complicated. God of War normally limited its buttons to just the face buttons. This one throws face, control stick movements and R1,R2, L1, L2 at incredibly inept time, so unless you are really quick, some give you less than a second to complete the combination. Luckily when you mess up a combination, you are never put back at the "start of the level" or anything, it just repeats and unlike God of War, it will use the same sequence you just failed, however, fail one against a boss character, he can do up to 25% damage to you, 4 failures and you are toast, or really close to it. Control could have had more attention paid to it. The swinging is cool, but run into a bulding and the camera will sometimes freak and get stuck somewhere momentarily, thats not a terrible detriment to gameplay, its when the camera gets stuck somewhere in a fight and you swinging at nothing you can see, thats frustrating.

Bruce Campbell makes his return as the Narrator, though he really gives you nothing new for this game aside from the "Matrix-Style" bullet time. If you have played Spider-man 2, dont expect too much new here. Like I said a fresh coat of paint.

This does not exactly live up to the free roaming sandbox gameplay. Framerate tends to struggle in closed areas, people are not very well detailed at all, they all look like scared puppy dogs, while you are very well designed, and the highest amount of detail is paid to Spidey and the bosses.

With that said this game does have its shiny points. Physics are somewhat used here, the sun reflects off windows realistically, at night you can go to buildings and look inside, even though they may be a cheap-o JPEG sitting behind a window, detail was paid to it a little. Spidey looks incredible, up close you can really see the detail in the suit, and black suit spidey is a crazy blast to play. However, *(SPOILER)*

when you get towards the end, and you have to fight Venom and Sandman, Venom is not really a problem, as long as you keep him stunned. Sandman is a pain in the glutes when you take over as New Goblin, the sixaxis control is frustrating. Laying down while playing this part is almost impossible. And judging the bombs is all hands down frustrating for a casual gamer such as myself.

Final thought:

If time and attention were paid to this game it could truly have been incredible. I would have waited another 6 months to a year for a truly great Spiderman game rather than 3 mediocre ones. This game is fun, and if you are a Spidey-freak, definitley dont pass this one up. If you understand the history of film-game franchises give this one a rent. Other than that, pass this one by. Or pick up Rainbow six, or even the Darkness.

If you've never played the second Spider-man game than this one will work nicely with you. I on the other hand find it very much the same as Spider-man 2. Which is displeasing to me. They didn't really make the city larger. Theres no reason the city has to be the same size. On PS3 they could make the city 5 times larger than on PS2 because of the amount of space the Blue-Ray disc allow. Although they did add an underground subway system that doesn't need to stop and load. The city does look much better now, but it's just not enough. Every thing is the same with Spider-man even with the black suit. On the other hand some of the character models look like another said bug eyed or worse thing. They didn't take their time with this game it was rushed by he look at it. I was hoping they would bring back a move or tool from the first Spider-man game in which you could point and shoot yourself in the direction you want like a gun using target cross hairs.

I dislike that they have introduced two versions of the game on the PS3. It has confused a lot of people and made others mad because they cannot be the New Goblin.

To me this is the same repetitive event that happen from the first Spider-man to second game. When Spider-man the movie/game was made it was mostly inside fighting and in the air combat with the annoying "get near the ground and die" thing. Also it had many arcade inside Training system type things to do. The second one had a larger city you could walk around in minus some of the sub games. Although it did have a mini arcade with mini games. The differences are great and the point is that from this first Spiderman PS3 game to the next may be even more tremendous because they didn't really take anything out to add more of something else in for the third. So when they get it together and think more plus work harder there will be a great Spider-man 4. I know they didn't work very hard on this third one. The first two was worked on more. They just copy and pasted from the second game. On this Spider-man 3D modelers did more work, animators did less work, and all the rest was copied and it was still all together was less than the first two as far as actual labor. I know this because of the end result.

The PS3's first Spider-man game is under it's true potential.

Lastly it's just very boring to me and for 60 USD it wasn't worth the money. If it was at most 15 USD it would be alright.

I was disappointed and cannot gather how fun this game is considering it could be better. I give it low points based on the earlier work. Someone who hasn't ever played the past games might think more highly of it.

This review is for the 4000 model, the one with four lights.

These work well and are a lot of fun. For the money, I'm very happy with them, for Rock Band and CD music. Depending on the amount of bass in your song and system, you have to adjust the "threshold" setting to maximize the effect.

I had a couple bad experiences with Rock Gear, both before my purchase, with their customer service, and after purchase, with the delivered product -but the very day I posted my bad experience on Amazing-dot-com, I was contacted by Rock Gear, who made things right by sending me replacement parts and bonus parts.

My bad experience before purchase:

I used their online chat, and the person knew nothing about the product beyond what was in plain view on their website.

I left the owner a voice mail asking a question before purchasing, and I never got a reply.

My bad experience after purchasing:

One of the two HexoLight 4000s I ordered didn't work. I determined it was the power supply, not the lights, by swapping the power supplies. Upon examining the bad power supply, it was DIRTY: covered in dirt and dust and grime, like it had kicked around someone's shop floor for a week. How it landed in a shipped product brings on some quality concerns. The product was designed in the US, but is entirely made in China.

How RockGear made it up to me:

They called me back and apologized.

They sent me a new power supply overnight.

They sent me extra cables that allow you to place lights far away from the controller. I like these a lot.

They called me again to ensure I was satisfied.

I got this mainly for the kids to use when playing Rock Band and Guitar Hero, but when it came we just plugged it in and fired up a Blue Man Group show on the dvr. Adding the hexolight 3000 in with our surround sound and big screen, the show was much more immersive. I was quite pleasantly surprised, and the kids feel like rock stars. The sets with more than 3 lights must be amazing.

I bought 1 for my kids when they play Guitar Hero and 2 for the basement to compliment our 'disco' lights. I like the effects and that they are sound sensitive. You will have to adjust the sound sensitivity if you adjust the volume of your stereo/audio system. I like the price and free shipping. Thanks Amazon.

I've had quite a few issues with this product. I've ordered 2, direct from the manufacturer (Rock Gear Shop) through Amazon. When shipment arrived, the second light was missing instruction manual and had sloppy and ripped wrapping. One hex module was stuck to another railing too tight and had to spend much time and effort to separate.

Now after a month of very light use, one of the control modules broke the lights stay on fast flashes, and no adjustments to Threshold or Speed knobs allieviate the problem. This essentially breaks the pulse response to sound feature and hex light becomes a simple strobe light.

I'm very dissappointed in this product and the purchase.

I have a 50's style burlesque review show with five other girls. We dance at various bars and the lights are SO perfect for creating magic and ambiance without a lot of hassle or expense for us. They are so easy and light! I had no problems with setting them up or using them.

We love how the lights synch to our music and we think we look and dance better with them.

I got this back when Streetfighter 4 first came out, and the Madcatz controllers were hard to find. When I started using it, I was surprised at how difficult it was to execute moves, especially circle moves like fireballs/dragon punches. This being my first stick since the Sega Genesis days, I chalked it up to inexperience with fight sticks in general. However, after a week I still had trouble pulling off basic moves. At the time I simply figured I was too used to the normal controller, and that was that. I put the stick up for consigment and decided to stick to the ol' D-pad.

Recently I decided to give sticks another chance, but this time I elected to drop the extra cash and get one of the Tournament Edition sticks. It wasn't until I started using the TE stick that I realized what a poor product the "Dominator" was. The dominator's plastic feels light, cheap, and transparent (perhaps by design, allowing the LED lights to be more visable). The stick is hard to move, you need to pull rather hard in any direction to get it to register. The same can be said about the buttons, which need to be pounded. Another complaint is the sharp edges, which make putting this in your lap uncomfortable. When you compare all of this to a Madcatz stick, which has a very reactive stick, buttons that are TOO sensitive if anything, a piano black finish, a heavy weight, and angled edges for for comfortable lap use, you really see where the extra cash goes.

The only pros are the LED lights and chrome buttons, which are purely cosmetic. But even on a superficial level, the dominator looks and feels like a toy.

A word on the memory feature...

I had no intention on using this feature when I purchased the stick, so I didn't bother with it. However before I took it in I decided to test it. The first thing I'll say is the button to activate what you program is small and poorly located above the stick. I can't imagine fumbling to find and use it in an actual game.

Anyone worried someone will use this online and program El Fuerte's infinate combo can rest easy, because IT CAN NOT HANDLE ADANCED STREETFIGHTER COMBOS. Streetfighter "block string" combos ( i.e. crouch LP, crouch LP, crouch MK-Hadoken) reqire imputs as fast as 1 to 4 frames, in other words 1/60 to 4/60 of a SECOND. This device simply isn't sophisticated enough to handle that level of precision. I suppose it might work on 10 hit Tekken combos, but again, the placing of the activation button will be an issue if you want to cheat.

First let me say that I've never been compelled to write a review before, but I'm so thoroughly disgusted by this product that I just had to.

Save your money and get a different joystick. The original d-pad had a much better response for sf2 hd remix and marvel vs capcom 2. The buttons stick, and often times had to be pressed on with force for them to work. At other times, when my fingers weren't placed directly on the center of the button, it wouldn't depress fully, and therefore didn't register. I could barely pull off a fireball, let alone a dragon punch. The build quality seems, well...pretty cheap. For a controller this size, you'd expect some heft to it, but it's disturbingly light. I didn't mess around with the move program options or the turbo buttons, so I can't really comment on those aspects.

I consider myself a fighting game veteran, and this is just unacceptable. I didn't want to spend bucks for a joystick, so I settled for this one based on the first two reviews, but if you purchase this product, you're just throwing you're money away.

I begin by saying that I am not a devoted fighting games enthusiast, but I enjoy SF2, SSF2T:HD and SF4 the most out of all the fighting games I have ever played. I used to own all of the SF2s on the Super Famicom/SNES and had a Capcom Fighting Stick.

I bought this on around the 21st of Feb at a local retailer in Hong Kong (1/F of 188 Oriental Shopping Centre in Wan Chai) for HK$498. I understand that play-asia.com has them in stock too. The stick is primarily intended for use with SF4. I haven't watched the video review above, and have only used it for around 2 hours total. Before that I had used the DS3 for around an hour, hence why I went shopping for a stick. I haven't tried it with any other fighting games.

The Dominator was for me the cheapest and most easily available alternative to the really rather expensive Hori sticks which I could find locally. The Horis were going in the shops for around HK$1300 and even play-asia.com's cheapest Hori was just below HK$1000. So for the price of that I could have (though I didn't) bought 2 of these and gotten my mates over to play! Plus I have already spent a lot of money and space on other gaming kit, such as 2 Rock Band guitars, the drums, and a Logitech G25 mounted on a Playseat full racing seat setup...

The stick itself really does resemble that in the picture. The blue LEDs are slightly less tacky-looking in real life than they are in the picture, particularly as the translucent plastic used in the base, while acceptable, will not go particularly well with your Ligne Rosset lounge chairs. The button action is acceptable, although I find that MP is a bit firmer than the rest for some reason. They are all coated with somewhat cheap-looking chrome paint.

The stick (the ball of which is also coated with the slightly cheap-looking chrome paint) is far better than the D-pad on the DS3. Ther eis an acceptable 8-way clicky action to it. Fireball-style moves can still be a bit hard to pull off, but this probably has to do with the angle with which I am using the stick (can't put it on the table) plus the fact that I haven't used an arcade stick for SF-style games for well-over a year. It's superb for dragon punches and charging moves. I haven't played much with Zangief so I decline to attempt to grade my spinning piledriver attempts. It does make using E.Honda a real pleasure though.

I should point out that I am having trouble executing the Ken kata-throw (as mentioned in a 1up guide MK followed quickly by throw) as well as effectively cancelling into focus moves, but I think that is also probably more a matter of timing than anything else.

I have not tried out the macro function as I would rather develope l337 sk1llz or die trying. ;)

Overall, as you may be able to tell from what I have said above, the build quality of the stick is acceptable, given the price. Furthermore, and more importantly, it is inherently usable as a fighting stick. I intend to try it with Soldner-X and 1942 Joint Strike when I have some free time, but I see no reason why it would be any worse for those if it can put up with SF4.

The only reason I have rated this stick 4 stars instead of 5 is that it's a bit cheap-looking and is obviously not made out of super-high-end components. However, in this case, and particularly given the cost of the Hori sticks, it's just a matter of getting what you pay for. Plus it's not like one is going to be able to use this stick for 10 years or more anyway (as my still-working Capcom Fighting Stick with its outdated SNES/Super Famicom connector will tell you). Highly recommended for cash-strapped fighting enthusiasts.

Let me start by saying that if you did not like Rarona you will probably dislike this game as well. The structure of how the game plays is basically the same: Get quest...synth or hunt to accomplish quest...complete quest by due date. That being said there have been some very effective tweaks.

Improvements:

Characters now have a MP bar! Thank god.

Items in container can be turned in (don't need to be in basket). Huge time saver.

Massive increase in explorable areas.

Multiple towns

Main quest has only one key deadline is reliant on somthing like a trophy system. The more things you do in the game (not just quests)the more trophies you get. Each "trophy" is worth points that allow you to rank up. You need to reach a certain rank by a certain year to keep the game moving forward.

quality of items turned in for quests no longer impact if you complete the quest or not; however they will impact the prize.

Synthed items now have a point system where you can use points to assign traits. You basically will be able to customize each item you synth. The higher the quality the more/better traits you can assign.

There is a End boss!

...and a bonus end boss!

party members come to you and ask for items, you dont need to go to them.

Multiple homonuculus working for you at once!

Overall better balance between exploring, synthing, gathering and fighting.

The one thing I didn't like is how gathering and fighting enemies now use up days. This forces you to decide if picking up items is even worth your time. I could have done without this aspect.

Atelier Rorona was the series first jump to full 3D. While Rorona was good, simple fun it was fairly iffy in visual design and most of the gameplay functionality was a drop down from past games although refocused into an interesting time-management type

Totori keeps the few strengths of Rorona and drops incredible, high polished upgrades on everything else. The visuals, most notably are some of the best on any console for my tastes. Very high end character modeling and everything is well filtered and anti-aliased, rare for a console game.

Gameplay has all been improved too, quest flow to management to balance to feature set is all upgraded, boss fights and dungeons and all of the meat is just so much more cohesive.

In the end this is one of the best niche titles available on the PS3 so if a little frill and lace don't scare you off give it a shot.

Buy Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland Bundle Now

Atelier Totori feels like an major upgrade from Rorona. Graphics have significantly improved and look much more anime cel-shaded style at all times. Combat system has been revised from the first game in the series and includes features that streamlines the action. The story seems to be a bit better than the last game but not too far into the game to say too much about it. Synthesizing items still has a role in the game and there is still a time line however. The packaging is much smaller than the other premium edition games of the past such as of Atelier Rorona or Ar Tonelico. The artbook that comes with it is okay but I own the Atelier series artbook so nothing much I can really say here. I haven't listened to the soundtrack CD either but I don't think it can compare to the actual soundtrack. Overall, appears to be a good game if you are fans of the series and JRPGS in general. Just be sure to not play through this game and then go play Rorona or that will take quite a bit of adjusting to.

So, i beat this game Last night, or the game ended after 22 hours of play and i lost. Or i should say i ran out of time. This games about micro managing your time and the different challenges that you have to complete to get points for your licences to stay a adventurer. at first your able to basically go about and grind to get these points but by the second half of the game you better have it figured out. It took me a long time to figure out how to get better swords and armor which was my down fall in the end.

This games fun though, the characters are your basic group of cute anime characters, with little to no actual story to hold onto. so you better find them cute or entertaining or something or you'll be pushing the next button a lot. The real problem is by the second half, i started not caring about what was happening, because it started feeling to much like the same same. one of the big reason i think i lost so badly as well.

So, if you like animal crossing, or any of those facebook gardening games this games your ticket. if your like me and you need a little bit more to hold onto, then I'd read about it plenty before picking up a copy. I'm happy i did and the first 15 hours i put into the game i really enjoyed, but I'm not sure if i care to play it again to get the better endings. For the game will just be again the same same.

I give this game 4 stars because i really appreciate that these different style games are coming out in America, and i really did like it until i got bored.

Would recommend for most people to pick up the cheaper version, not the Bundle Edition. It's not really worth it compared to the last ones that came out with the other Nis titles. the books small, and the Soundtrack is most just the back ground music. That said the geek in me had to have it.

If you're ever in the need for some Kadokawa merchandise, this is it. Bandai picked up the license and bam, here we are.

For those that don't know, Kadokawa is primarily responsible for the .hack series, gundam ace, and asuka magazines. In addition, they produce very niche video games.

This might be one of my favorite gundam games of all, next to gundam extreme versus.

What I Love:

-Two Modes Story Mode (Dubbed Unicorn Mode) & Custom Cast Mode

-Mind blowing graphics, if you've graduated from the PS2 or PSP, this is game is for the big boys only

-Hack'n and Slicing away at other MS's, this is incredibly addictive as the MS's float away and detonate, it's really that serious

-Nearly all the MS in the first THREE anime eps will be in the game, UNREAL

Cons:

-You may need a little bit of Japanese, but hey, what has really stopped us from playing these imports? nothingggggggg

Don't get hooked, because I did.

I bought this used. You have to realize its in Japanese, If you can adapt to playing this game which has a very easy Tutorial to learn how to play the game.I must warn you it doesn't come with the DLC missions if you bought it used which most people recommend you need a Japanese PSN account to gain access to downloading Its a Interesting game when you play Unicorn Mode that very much make you watch clips from the Anime and Unlock Missions by doing other missions from different characters from the Anime OVA series if your Nostalgic about Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn its the game for you.
