Disclosure I am such a video pinball addict that I own Zen Pinball from the PSN as well as two other versions of this game, on PS2 and PSP. There is just something about pinball that feeds the hardcore "skill" gamer in me. It's punishing at times, loaded with lights and sounds, numerous biofeedback rushes of adrenaline from making shots and beating high scores it's an "old school gamer's" delight.

So perhaps I was predisposed to liking this game. Still, I tried to evaluate it honestly and rigorously.

***************

Graphics: WOW. WOW!!!! I own this game on PS2 and PSP, and the PS3 visuals blow those games away handily. Running in 1080p at a silky smooth 60fps, The visuals are just spectacular. Jaggies are almost completely non-existent. No longer do we have to suffer through subpar textures the playing fields are just exquisite, all text is clear and readable, reflections and lighting are realistic it's just stunningly beautiful.

***************

Control: I have noticed absolutely no lag with my setup. The wireless controllers work fine with this game. L1 and R1 control the flippers, while the left and right stick control the plungers and tilt functions. The fact that there is no sixaxis tilt is odd, but I'd rather use the more accurate stick, anyway.

The camera controls offer a lot of choices five views each for "smart cam" and "full view" which are dynamic and fixed views, respectively.

***************

Gameplay: If you've played another version of Williams Pinball HOF, you'll have a good idea of what to expect. Some tables are unlocked for free play, others require credits. Achieving table goals earns credits to unlock the pay tables. Tutorial videos outline the ways to achieve table goals.

The only wrinkle here is the Williams Challenge. In this mode, you are tasked with playing each table consecutively, beating a target score on each table, in three tries. The only way to unlock the Jive Time table is to beat the challenge which is rather hard for even an expert, given the random chance involved in Pinball. Some tables are easy to meet the score goal on, but some tables, especially the older ones, drain much more easily and have fewer score multipliers, making them quite hard. Luckily, Jive Time is by far the least interesting table in the game so if the Williams Challenge is giving you fits, don't sweat it too much. (NOTE! When you complete the table goals for a particular table, you will be presented with the option to instantly unlock a table for free play. Jive Time will be on the list don't pick it! This seems to be a mistake by the programmers. It can only be unlocked through the Williams Challenge mode, but the game will still seem to "waste" an unsuccessful unlock on Jive Time. At a minimum, it will delay the unlock until you actually complete Williams Challenge. So it will probably be better spent on making a different table free to play.)

As far as bugs go, they seem to be further and fewer between than the PS2 and PSP versions of the game. Multi-ball play is much more stable than the previous versions of the game there are no frame rate hitches and gameplay hiccups as in the other versions. In about 10 hours of playtime, I have had a ball pass through a bumper once, and balls "leave the table" twice. Every once in a while, a flipper will "wiggle" on its own without input from the player. So three or fours bugs in that time frame is not so bad, and is probably on par with how many real-life bugs you'd encounter on a physical table with all of its mechanical parts and potential for malfunctions. Should it be perfect? Probably. Is it game breaking? Not at all.

New to the game are online leaderboards and PS3 trophies. Leaderboards finally replicate the real thrill of pinball trying to top some other real person's score. I will say, the high score implementation is still not perfect the lists are quite sluggish to scroll through and sorting options are non-existent in the leader boards (e.g. by friends, top scores, etc.), and no higher-level data is available as in Zen Pinball (e.g. best score minute, best this week, best single ball, etc.) The trophies, sadly, are rather lame there are only 15, nearly all of which are tied to high scores, with only one gold and one silver, no platinum which leads me to believe this title was intended for download on PSN but somehow it was decided it would earn more money as a disc game. Why the trophies are not tied to the in-game table goals (as they are in the 360 version) is truly beyond my understanding.

Tables: The following are the 13 included tables, in chronological order:

Jive Time (1970) A very simple table with few extraneous features. Probably the most "old-timey" of the group. This table is a serious "drain monster" though, with huge center and outlanes and tiny bumpers, and it has been set to 5-ball mode by default to compensate. Pretty frustrating, but good for a nostalgia trip.

Gorgar (1979) A relatively simple table with a few extras, such as a magnetic "snake pit." Well balanced and fun, but not overly complex. This table can seem crushingly hard to a beginner, but once you master some judicious table bumping, it can become a joy to play. You'll really build your skills on this one, it's hard-core.

Firepower (1980) a simple but compelling table with two ball locks, some pop bumpers, targets to light them, and an orbit lane to get back up top. Apparently, this was the first table to include "lane change," and boy is it a nice step up from Gorgar to have it. Well balanced, cool sound effects, nice art.

Black Knight (1980) A fun, 4-flipper multilevel playfield with several ramps and two ball locks for multi-ball. This game is very multi-ball heavy and is thus lots of fun. The flow on this table is amazing a good hard toss with the flipper can send the ball through both levels and back again in one smooth flight through the ramps.

Space Shuttle (1984)A fun table with a lane changing word array, two ball catches, two ramps, a space shuttle model, and a bonus readout on the table. Midway between the very complex tables and the more simple ones. This one is pretty easy to earn the extra ball on, so you could be looking at a marathon session. I will say it can get a tad repetitive at higher levels of play.

Sorcerer (1985) some cool ramps and an fun adjustable word-slot target make this a pretty fun table. The arrangement of targets is quite a bit of fun to hit. Multiball is not too difficult to engage, but is not as easy as Black Knight. The art on this one is quite fetching the reds, blacks, oranges and purples really pop on a nice HDTV screen.

Pin*Bot (1987) This table is a lot of fun. A robotic "visor" lifts up during the game, allowing you to lock balls into the eye sockets for later multiball use. Several ramps and a skillshot mechanic off the plunger make this one a keeper. It can be a bit of a "drain monster," though, as the left outlane is shaped in such a way that it frequently diverts the ball in that direction.

Taxi (1988)This talking table strikes a nice balance between simplicity and gimmicks. While there is no multilevel flipper, a skillshot spiral is off the plunger, a two-way ramp goes around the top, and a ball lock for multiball play on the right side. Adding somewhat to the complexity are five "passengers" you have to pick up and take to their destination (for a big bonus). The passengers include Gorbachev, Pin*Bot, Dracula, Santa Claus, and a Marilyn Monroe lookalike. This one is very balanced fun for both beginners and veterans.

Funhouse (1990)a VERY fun table with loads of features. You work to advance a clock on the game field by hitting bumpers. A talking ventriloquist dummy gets whacked by the pinball and complains if you advance the clock far enough, you can put him to sleep and launch the ball into his snoring mouth. Lots of ramps and special features, and a third flipper for multi-level play. Probably the best table in the game.

Whirlwind (1990) Incredibly fun, up there with Funhouse. This talking table gives you warnings of hurricanes/tornadoes. A third flipper makes this a multi-level game. A lot of cool ramps litter this one, and the middle of the playfield features "storm" pinwheels that alter the path of the ball. The special shots on this table are a lot of fun. The extra ball is devilishly placed, and the million plus is right there for the taking if you light it. The graphical quality helps make the objectives clear on the table even without deep study just like seeing a target light on a real table!

Tales of the Arabian Nights (1996) Probably the most "beautiful" table in terms of artwork, but the art is so busy that you may get lost in it, especially at certain camera angles. This one is more of a skill table, with more difficult shots to make. The transparent ramps are very cool and create a "magical" effect on the ball returns. A long set of "missions" make this a good table for a long game session.

Medieval Madness (1997) a good beginner table. Easy to score in the tens of millions, with several easy targets and very difficult drains to fall into. Also a good table to master it's deceptively simple. When you figure out the rule set, you'll learn that you can destroy the castle seven times for ever-increasing millions. This seems to be the most popular table online, the leaderboard keep getting longer and longer! I will say, this table is more of a "marathon" than a "skills" table. To break 100 million, it involves a LOT of repeating shots over and over, lather, rinse, repeat.

No Good Gofers (1997) a table which seems to be based on "Caddyshack," this has a lot of ramps and tons of sound effects. Extremely frenetic, not altogether difficult to engage multiball or score relatively highly.

If you want to research these tables some more and see real photos, check out the Internet Pinball Database.

***************

Summary:

Keep in mind, any flaws such as those mentioned above are secondary to the main appeal of the game. What you're getting here are 13 classic REAL tables, with great physics, and incredible, nearly photo-realistic graphics. Playing these tables in an arcade, let alone finding them, would take a lot of time and money. Owning them would be even more expensive and effort-intensive. Instead, for the price, you get unlimited access to some prime arcade heritage at a very high quality of simulation. Of course nothing beats the real thing, but the price comparison is huge. You just can't go wrong with this game if you are even a marginal pinball fan. If you have a PS3/360 and a HDTV, it is a must-purchase, pure and simple.

Well, my first review, but had to share my pinball story and love for the Williams Pinball Collection on PS3, Ive been playing pinball over 30 years and Mastered one game in this collection over a period of 3 months in 2002 at Arizona's biggest arcade (Gameworks) when I was unemployed, nothing to be proud of, but I was addicted and found a new goal for 3 month's of my life and enjoyed every moment mastering Medieval Madness. I could spend a whole day playing on 50 cents, wining game after game, I never knew the history of this pinball machine, just thought it was amusing, "the best and funniest one liners in any pinball machine ever made !", It was the only pinball machine that had waiting lines, and draws a crowd when your running up a High Score, "really !". "The final battle for the kingdom is exciting", the local pinball geeks took this machine and the High Scores "very serious", (I was like the NEO of Medieval Madness for a while), once I mastered and broke all the records at that arcade (over 600,000,000 score) I moved on, found a good job and laid that chapter of my life to rest. "Or did I ?", now I have Williams Pinball Hall of Fame, a 1080P 3D HD T.V, PS3 and my 2 favorite pinball machines Medieval Madness and Tales Of The Arabian Nights, a new journey begins, "look out for JWA !".

You don't have to be unemployed or a pinball geek to love this game, 10 good pinball machines, 2 great pinball machines and one for the old stinkers (Jive Time), I love to share another good pinball story from my arcade experiences, but I got new High Scores to get, oh yeah, if you don't think that Medieval Madness is the best pinball machine ever made, most people who love pinball will agree, not only is it the most expensive pinball machine to buy, "its the best", check out the top 100 all time best pinball games online and you'll see Medieval Madness is the number 1 pinball machine of all times voted on by the players, need I say more, just buy it !.

This is an update posted 10/26/2010, this game has online scoreboard feature but I never used it, I check up on all the top scores just to know where I stood among the best in the world, well on 4/28/10 I posted the Worlds best PS3 score on Medieval Madness 2,734,306,309, I found a glitch when you enter your high score, I recorded my score on video to prove it, its not really that big of a deal in the big picture, but at least I can say I'm the best in the world at some thing and that's cool !.

"Its totally Medieval !".

I own this game on Wii and PSP. Now with the recent Hi-Def releases I own it on both Xbox 360 & PS3 also. Both purchased at Amazon for $29.49 (more than $10 off retail.) That comes out to $2.27 per pin that's insane value given the excellent implementation.

Is it worth adding this title if I own it on Wii, PS2 or PSP? Absolutely! You get 3 new tables No Good Gophers, Arabian Nights & Medieval Madness. All of these are newer Solid State pins with complex and fun rule sets. You also get the Hi-Def graphics which blow the previous Wii version's graphics away. Finally there are online high score boards, but unfortunately no online tournaments or Friends High Scores....yet. Can the develepors implement this...I truly have no idea but my guess is that if there is support it is possible!

Even if you have only a casual interest in Pinball I highly recommend this game. If you love pinball this is a MUST buy. I'd go so far as to say it's worth buying an Xbox 360 or PS3 just to play this game if you are a pinball freak. The ball physics and table modeling is spot on. Sound is authentic. Nothing beats the feel of this game except owning the real pins which is a bit more expensive and takes up a great deal more room.

If you've never played pinball but are interested you should give this a try...probably the cheapest, easiest way to get a good sampling of some of the best tables ever.

A request for all new and old fans, if you buy this game and like it, please post a positive review and spread the word to your friends and acquaintances. We want to see more tables issued on disc or through downloadable content. Support the developers and let license holders on these table know that there is an overwhelming demand to see more great pins brought to a new generation of gamers.

Oh yeah...final question Is this better on Xbox 360 or PS3? If you're a pinball purist and own both systems you may want to buy it for both. Otherwise choose the system with the controller that feels best in your hand. If everything is equal and you just want one, go with the Xbox 360 for the following reasons 1) More achievements ( the PS3 trophies are a little sparse) 2) More competition for high scores online at least so far...if you don't like competition go PS3.

Enjoy!

I was there when most of these games were brand new and have played them all for real and I can say without hesitation that these are very good represntations of the originals. There are a few glitches that arise occaisionally, such as, I've seen the ball leave the playfield and roll off the screen (oops), but overall the gameplay is very good. The ball physics are also slightly off ( the ball is always moving even when it should be standing still ). I also noticed that some of the tables have mistakes in the sound effects, which doesn't effect gameplay, I just happen to know first hand that they got it wrong. Overall, the graphics are outstanding, sound is good, the gameplay is good, and I have no regrets making this puchase. My one pet peave with every pinball simulation is the fact that they never duplicate the machines original feature ajustments such as difficulty levels, number of balls per game, etc. The closest I've seen to that was the Pro Pinball series for the PC, but even those do not include playfield adjustments, which all of these machines had. Maybe one day, someone will do it 100% right, but as simulations go, this one is not too bad at all.

For those who think the whole point of pinball is to just hit your flippers madly to keep the ball on the table, you are missing the whole point. In fact, I used to be one of those guys. I didn't realize that there is indeed skill involved and that there are actual techniques in order to activate the number of features that each game possesses. Additionally, I didn't even realize how many features each game included, until I bought the Williams Collection and read the instructions. Either way, I moderately enjoyed pinball back in the day. Now, I can't get enough. The game play on the Pinball Hall of Fame for the PS3 is so realistic, you'd swear that you are playing an actual table. The graphics are dead-on and my wife, NOT an avid video gamer or pinballer, has become completely addicted, as well. The variety of tables is excellent as they span several decades and include those that talk, those that are easy to continue the action, and others which can annoy the blazes out of you. Some versions of the Williams Collection for other systems do not include all of the tables that the PS3 version includes. Those versions are missing out on the best tables. We've played this game religiously for well over a year now and still never tire of it. In fact, we've bought several other pinball games since and always resort back to this one. We also own all of the Zen and Marvel tables (except for the recent Fantastic Four table) and even though they have extra bells and whistles, the actual game play isn't as realistic. In fact, may of the extra features are so distracting, that they take away from the fun. The ball seems to always be spinning and forcing itself straight back at you. A couple of the tables try so hard to make the graphics spectacular, that they forgot to actually add any real type of game play. Mars and Earth Defense are victims of this, though Paranormal and Blade grow on you over time. The Gottlieb Collection (which desperately needs a PS3 release) holds up well on the Wii, but the PS2 version (which offers fewer tables) is a bit hard on the eyes after awhile. All the other tables we've tried (and I think we've nailed almost all of them for PS3 and PS2...haven't hit Dream 3D for Wii yet, but haven't heard good things) are pretty lame in comparison. The game play isn't very realistic and the graphics are rough at best. Do yourself a favor, and grab Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection. Play it a little bit and then go back and read all the instructions on how to get the goals. Once you realize all that it can do and teach yourself how to manipulate the ball(s), I guarantee you'll be hooked. Besides, if Angry Birds can keep people entertained for hours, this certainly can! Now, someone needs to get Crave cracking on some Pinball 2000 and Data East collections. If Zen can get the Marvel rights for PS3, I'm sure they can get the rights to all the movies and TV shows they used for their vast assortment of tables! I'd actually start buying the Blu-ray releases of movies again if they would add the pinball game to the disks! Surf's Up did, now let's get Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Iron Man, etc. on board!

Saints Row 2 is a great game overall. The fun factor is extremely high, but enjoying games of this genre shows how sadistic humans can be.

Of course I've read and heard the numerous Saints Row-GTA comparisons, and supporters on both sides have some valid points. From my personal experience however, I can say that GTA wins with the main missions and overall presentation, while Saints Row wins in everything else. Some say the voice acting in Saints Row 2 is cheesy but I disagree. The storyline is a bit underwhelming, but sandbox-style games can get by without that. Saints Row 2 still has its moments.

Where Saints Row 2 shines is in its character customization, the best I've seen in any game, and its side missions (or activities), of which there are many. By my estimate, side missions double the amount of time it takes to finish this game completely. Most of these are right on the map too, so you don't have to go hunting for them. As far as customization, I only spent about 15 minutes on that before diving into the game, but in that short period I was still able to construct a character that bears my resemblance. In fact, my girlfriend once said she doesn't like watching me play because seeing the virtual 'me' get shot or run over is a bit disturbing.

The game isn't perfect though (hence the 4-star rating). The graphics are not very impressive, which can be forgiven as the gameplay makes up for this shortcoming. However, the frame rate can get pretty low at times. I did not expect this to happen given the cheap graphics. The save game load times are longer than they should be in my opinion. Fortunately once the game is up and running there are no load delays.

One major issue is weapon changing, which for me was extremely problematic in the beginning. You change your weapon by holding circle and pushing the left analog stick in one of the eight possible directions. The problem in this game is that when you hold circle the weapon HUD appears only for a second before vanishing. Obviously in the first mission you're unarmed, so imagine killing a cop, picking up his gun and then not being able to use it. I had to finish that mission barehanded, and while I was doing so I became discouraged. It may be possible to finish this game barehanded but I am not going to try. I honestly wouldn't have continued playing if I didn't find a solution for this. You can either press circle very hard (I don't like doing this; controllers aren't cheap) or you can memorize the weapon layout and make the switch before the HUD disappears. Since you can carry only eight weapons at a time, doing that isn't difficult.

All in all, Saints Row 2 has been a riot. It's good to see GTA facing some direct competition. The sandbox genre is better for it.

At first I was skeptical about purchasing SAINTS ROW 2 but since I have it only 1 things is wrong. I can't turn back time to purchase it earlier this game is the best game in its class much better than any GRAND THEFT AUTO I played, after playing this I basicly forgot about my Grand Theft Auto 4 because this has better guns, better missions, better drive-bys (use any gun not just an automatic weapon), better ways of getting cash , better online gameplay, better storyline, better houses and cars you get the picture. No more are you someone being told what to do you're the BOSS reclaiming your spot back in your city. Everything is customizable from your car to your house to your clothes to even you, yes your character is customizable male, female whatever you want. And if you no longer like your character you just go to the plastic surgeon and change your character at any given moment. Claim new neighborhoods so you can take your comfy throne as KING or QUEEN of Stilwater. 2 THUMBS WAY UP

This game is just fun. Reminds me of old GTA when it was fun to just drive around and explore. The side missions are a lot of fun and the character customizations are diverse. The graphics seem a little dated, but it doesn't matter because it doesn't take away from the experience. If you like open world sandbox type games, this one is a must buy!

ok i already have this game and its awesome. so when i saw collector's edition and read the description about having 40 addition missions and extra customizing features,i was excited. but when i received it i was disappointed to learn that its the same exact game. nothing new or different about it. but it did come with a cool tin case, USB flash shaped like a bullet, money clip, and poster. so it wasnt that bad. i gave a higher rating because even though its the regular game and not a different edition, the set is pretty cool. i decided to keep the set because i gave my other copy to my godchild because the game is so awesome. plus i kinda like the tin case. so ultimately, if you already own Saints Row 2 then dont bother getting this deal unless you want just those extras because its only the regular game with the extras. if you dont own Saints Row 2 then i highly recommend gettig this deal.

This game is a must have for any collector of sandbox GTA style kind of games. I have never played Saints Row before but have became a fan. The game does not freezes like GTA IV. The mission and themes are quite fun and silly. There is one activity mission where you get to spray human toxic waste all over the city. Another activity I like is called Fuzz, where you dress up like a cop for a cop show and cause chaos to citizens. There are so many different types of cars and vehicles to collect. I also like how you get to customize your character from race, sex, personality, voice, and walking styles. The customizing is more advanced than other games I have played like Godfather I & II, and the Sims3.

The price is what drew me to this product. Although the estimated time of delivery is about a month (which I am aware of when I ordered it since I suspected that it will be coming from a foreign country which it did), the product arrived in less than 2 weeks. It looks just like the one pictured and comes in a container that looks like the real branded item. However, the right stick and the square button are already not functioning properly.

Good looking product but the quality is extremely poor. It's a waste of money.

I bought one of these sleeves a year or so ago at a local store. I can't find them anymore. Lucky to find them here and cheaper than before. This silicone sleeve has grips and gives the controller a whole new feel. No more slipping in your hands plus it is protected. I feel "naked" if I use a controller without one now. Well worth the price to me and I don't want to ever go back to a "bare" controller. Love it!!

I purchased two of these to protect my PS3 controllers. They are not as nice of a custom fit as I would have liked! There is a flap on the outside edge of the L2 and R2 buttons that is very annoying. Also, when I pulled these off to return them they ripped very easily. I do not recommend purchasing this product. If you want a controller sleeve get the ones officially licensed by Playstation. They are a much better product!

I really gave this a shot over weeks, and I really like the texture on this, but the silicone surrounding the sticks interferes with the complete range of motion, albeit slightly, but very annoying. Decided to chop off the grips area themselves, and permanently epoxy glue the textured area to the controller. Inelegant, but works better. I have found after using a variety of these products from different manufacturers that they all restrict full movement, and impede quick responses on the shoulder buttons. Last time I will invest in any of these, good idea, just cheap implementation.

Don't come in white they are red 2 blacks and a blue, I know it says 3 but you get 4, and they are really cool they are much easier to put on... and they have a nice rubber feel...

This one, the white clear one, is one of the worst I have bought, it ripped while I was just trying to put it on, look at the pictures I uploaded in the product section, it also feels cheap compared to the other ones I bought, for $5.99 this is not worth your money it's a complete waste, get the 3 combo for like $6.99 which is an amazing deal, yes you pay some shipping but they are much better... trust me much, much better..

No need in thanking me, but I just saved you from being really disappointed, trust me this one is awful. you don't want this one.

I use this controller to connect to my Linux machines using the sixad userspace device drivers. Compared to their ~$50 official wireless PS3 controller alternatives this controller is a bargain. The only trick is sixad requires a small patch to support these devices. I don't know how Windows will handle this controller. It took me a while to find the patch on an Arch Linux message board, but with the patch, all features of the device work great in Linux, including the built in accelerometers. Battery life on these is great. I've bought 3 and am considering buying a 4th, if the price stays in this range. I use it to play Wii games on dolphin emulator.

The games for the PS3 do not seem to have very many 2 player games that DON'T require internet. Which is one reason I enjoyed this game so much, because it was an actual two player game and both players could play the entire storyline (not just certain chapters like some games that say they are two player). My boyfriend and I loved playing this game. The graphics are pretty good, the storyline isn't bad, even though I would like to skip over the whole 'movie scenes' that they do and get back to the actual game.

Overall, this game is fun and I thought it was worth the money.

Playing this game today makes this seem like old graphics, but at the time these were the new and high end graphics. I love this game so much. The best part is how awesome it is playing the campaign split screen. It says you can play up to 4 players split screen but I only have 3 controllers and it hasn't been working with 3. Maybe you can only play with 1, 2 or 4 players. The game can be kinda challenging, especially at the beginning before you regenerate any health. I wish you didn't have to pick up health but its not so bad. (You pick up health and you also regenerate 1 4th of your health). The chimera are so cool and I have the second game too. I highly recommend this game. I can almost call it a classic but it is still kinda next gen. BUY THIS!

In case you know nothing about the game, the basic premise is that you play as War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Seems War answered the call that the seventh seal had been broken but was then accused of starting the Apocalypse himself. In an effort to clear his name, War is permitted to return to figure out exactly what happened. You first start the game with quite a few powers but of course, you will lose them soon enough and have to start rebuilding as War works to clear discover the truth. The plot isn't exactly stellar but it's unique enough to keep your interest and at least seems to have a point.

Now onto the appearance of the game:

The graphics take advantage of the PS3 with bright colors and less of a washed out look that seems to be prevalent in many action games. The voice work is top notch and the same is true of the musical score and general sound effects. The characters look interesting and unique and you'll see everything from demons, zombies and angels. War himself looks nice and has very fluid movement. He looks heavy and sounds that way when he moves, which isn't to say that the movements are awkward or clumsy, just solid. He doesn't flit around like the Prince of Persia I mean come on, he's War.

If you're expecting a 'God of War' type game there are similarities to be sure however the mechanics of 'Darksiders' are not quite as sophisticated. You could play as a button masher though there are combos to master which will improve your score and playing experience. The finishing moves found in the 'GOW' games (you know when the circle button appears and then you press the various button or joystick combos as they appear on the screen) are primarily reduced to a circle icon and once you press the button, War mostly just handles things by himself. I don't really feel this detracts from the game to be honest.

The game controls are easy to learn and intuitive. You collect souls which can be used as currency, wrath points or health. You level up and obtain more abilities that are tied to your weapon, combo moves, health, etc. War's weapon is one big a$$ sword to be sure and he handles it like a champ. As you progress on your journey, you will achieve more and more weapon abilities and skills which really add to the game playing experience overall.

The atmosphere of the game is first rate. The developers obviously dedicated a great deal of time and attention to the details and it really paid off. Cars, buildings, creatures, all of it, look realistic (well as realistic as a freaky demon can look). The game gets better as it progresses...in fact, though you'll have fun during the first 45 60 minutes of the game, it is the weakest portion of the game overall. As you move through the game, the areas, enemies, your weapons and abilities get bigger and better. The story line keeps things moving and you want to see what comes next. There are quite a few puzzles as you move through the game, most are simple though a few can be frustrating.

I have to say I am quite pleased with it and feel it is definitely worth the purchase and is one of the better PS3 games I've played. I've yet to find any glitches or issues in the PS3 version. If you like action-adventure games with puzzle elements, you are probably going to like this one as well.

Graphics: A+

Gameplay: A+

Mechanics and Controls: A

Storyline: A+

Artwork / Visual Design: A

Originality: B (original story, familiar mechanics)

Fun Factor: A+

This game is gorgeous, simple as that. The developers have taken the time to create a visually stunning world and a fluid gaming experience, but that's just the beginning. The storyline is very unique and definitely keeps you interested. All of the game mechanics are well handled, with nothing feeling labored, repetitive, or unnecessary. If I have criticism, it is a minor one. This game was clearly built off of God of War's engine, with similar controls, combat styles, leveling systems, etc. At least in my opinion, however, that is a minor issue. I'm a huge God of War fan, and I see no problem with the way the build was handled.

While the game may show a large amount of mechanical similarity to God of War, that is really where the comparison ends. Darksiders drops you into a post apocalyptic nightmare of a world that is an amazingly organic blend of Heaven, Hell, and the modern world. The game contains many beautifully designed levels that have you running down city streets one moment, and fighting in a Hell spawned cesspool the next, with one flowing beautifully into the other. Character and monster design leave nothing to be desired either, with wonderfully detailed nightmares and angelic warriors coming at you from all sides. This game definitely has the eye candy taken care of.

As far as the mechanics go, as I said, think God of War and you've pretty well got the idea. You're going to collect souls in order to level up. You'll learn new skills, get new toys, and those toys will need to be leveled as well. You'll run around unique, artistic maps solving complex puzzles. Combat is largely combo based versus multiple opponents, with multiple weapons to choose from. One of the amusing additions to combat is the ability to use just about anything in the environment as an improvised weapon. Street signs, street lamps, cars, you can use them all as either projectiles or beating implements. When the boss fights come up, you'll be working to beat them down to a context specific cut scene finale. If you enjoyed the GoW's gameplay style, you'll feel right at home here. And honestly, there is something to be said for that. The familiar mechanics mean that there's no time wasted figuring out how the game works, and more time spent actually playing the game.

Finally and most importantly, the storyline. Darksiders is the story of War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. War is summoned by the start of the Apocalypse, and comes to Earth to complete his task, but finds himself the only Horseman to do so. Turns out, somebody started the party early, and War ends up taking the blame. In a bid to clear his name and earn back his power, War returns to Earth to track down those responsible. I'm a big mythology buff, and this concept really intrigued me. No one had really attempted to tackle the Four Horsemen before, despite with well known, widespread nature of the story, and it is rich with possibilities. While I won't include any spoilers here, trust me when I say that you won't be disappointed by how they handle it and what they do with the material. If you have an interest in mythology, this is a game you will want to play.

Bottom line, I really don't have any criticisms of this game. I've been looking forward to it for some time, and it has fulfilled its potential completely. I have no doubt that we can look forward to sequels down the road, and I look forward to them. This is a masterfully crafted game, beautifully designed, and a pleasure to play. Do yourself a favor and buy it.

Looking for something to hold you over before God Of War 3? Look no further. This game delivers it. Straight hack/slash action with what is turning out to be a really good story that has me captivated to know what will happen next. It pretty much uses the God Of War combat style but so what. I LOVE this format. No spending hours learning how to play. Just put it in the PS3 and start playing. My kind of game. If you like God Of War and Devil May Cry type games then this game is for you. Good old fashion game play with great graphics and you can go anywhere. You will have fun going berserk with War. Is there anything better? Not to me. War screamed to the Charred Council, "I answered the call". Answer his an PLAY THIS GAME.

Update 2/6/10: Just beat this game. Story is great. War shall return along with his brothers for revenge. GREAT GAME!!!!!!!

Update 3/22/2010: Listen people this is the (God Of War) fighting format but so what. (God Of War) is the (Soul Reaver) fighting format, concepts and so on. People act like God Of War started it all. IT DIDN'T. Still great game.

When DARKSIDERS was first released (Jan 5th, 2010) I scoured Amazon reviews for several weeks to determine whether it would be worth my time and money. The most convincing opinion of the time was that of the 2-star review stating the game was repetitive, uninspired and derivative. As a fan of Zelda and God of War I decided to rent the game with my Gamefly giftcard. Once I had finished scrubbing off the tiremarks and cigarette burns from the disc, my hour long playthrough led me to believe the review was spot-on and I returned the game without looking back. I was under the impression that time-limit combo sequences, copy-cat gameplay and formulaic environmental design was all that lay ahead. After all, those were the defining points of the 2-star review. ....BUT, just like his Apocalyptic Oppressors, I had dealt War and his allies a huge injustice. One I wish to set straight.

Fast forward to nearly 16 months later and a price drop of $40. Darksiders came highly recommended by another Amazon reviewer with high rated marks and similar genre interests. After playing for two hours I found myself ENTRANCED by this game. My initial disinterest in the title was clearly from not giving it proper time to develop into its own. The first hour serves as a tutorial for the game. However, it is embedded into gameplay in such a way as to make you unaware that you are being taught how to play while still holding the metaphorical reins. The small attention to detail, down to instructional direction, is inspiring. This game is clearly NOT made by amateurs. This game consistently provided me with challenging puzzles, a powerful narrative framework, ambitious variety and dynamic visuals.

GAMEPLAY:

War has such a HUGE arsenal of moves and artifacts that the pause menu is initially daunting. The game provides a steady stream of equipment and features a remarkable method of mapping these buttons in a manageable way. Although the game includes a selection of Link's gadgetry, Darksiders spins the angle to embrace the aesthetic and physical facets of the end of days. War doesn't have a boomerang that makes enemies spin and light red. He has a Crossblade than saws into his enemies with visceral accuracy and sadistic destruction. Darksiders' greatest achievement is in weaving innumerable gameplay elements into a cohesive package within a single atmosphere. I found myself shooting blue/orange portals to direct soul power, grappling across chasms, using a visor (mask) to see into a different realm, soaring through dilapidated cities on the wings of a griffon, blasting cannons across rickety bridges, and charging my fiery horse Ruin against tower-sized beasts. Darksiders has an UNCANNY ability to mold various properties into the mythos of Armageddon. If I had never played the games from which it borrows, I could easily have believed Darksiders pioneered the use of each and every relic.

The game took me 15 hours to complete, but would have taken me a few more to find all of the unlockable pieces of armor and upgrades. Different upgrade tokens can be assigned to different weapons and a multitude of combinations can be used to defeat enemies on your own terms. Do you want to play like Devil May Cry? Use a powerful sword uppercut to lift the enemy into the sky and reign down bullets with your gun. Do you want to play like God of War? Use your gauntlet to smash a horde of enemies and create a swirling vortex of souls with your Scythe to decimate their numbers. Start a combo by blowing the Earthcaller horn to stun some demons and club them with your home-run crushing Chaos Eater sword swing. Every combo has smooth camera work and stunning animation to augment War's abilities. You have near limitless control to play in the manner you prefer.

The Watcher (voiced by Mark Hamill) is a demon sent by the "Council" to keep War from disobeying his initial task. Holding "select" will call him forth to provide hints or direction for missions. This, in tandem with an excellent map and fast-travel Serpent Hole system, keep your progression constant while allowing you to backtrack at any point to collect new items. From the controls to the weapon and gameplay variety, everything in Darksiders is masterfully crafted and deeply engaging.

CHARACTERS:

War is a brilliant characterization of the Judeo-Christian horseman. He stands with impunity at the feet of Heaven and Hell's armies, ready to defend his honor and uphold his code despite the obstacles and cautions foretold by others. Despite drawing from religious mythos, I personally enjoy the creation of a character who can appeal to gamers from a plethora of religions and cultures. Rather than embody orthodox Christian overtones, War is an idealization of the solitary hero: resilient, adapting, discerning and powerful. War's voice acting is superb and does a phenomenal job of conveying defiance in the face of much larger enemies. To great effect, these enemies and allies also perpetuate a believable world caught in a supernatural struggle. Samael speaks with unearthly distinction and visuals that almost seem to draw ash and brimstone through your screen and into your living room. The Destroyer seethes deceptive charm like a proverbial serpent to waylay the gullible. Slitha bargains with cynical distress and convincing intonation. There are no characters within Darksiders that feel out of place or forcefully acted. Every enemy or ally speaks with sincerity and savvy. Every design is original, detailed and enigmatic.

SOUND AND VISUALS:

From Voice Acting to Music and Sound Effects, all of the sound in Darksiders is Top-Notch. The merchant Vulgrim impatiently clacks his skeletal hands for the Horseman's purchases with the same clarity as War's horse rising with gusto from the fiery ground. There are a multitude of locations which feature the same comic book style art, vividly bright visuals and bold design. From ashen deserts, crumbling highways, and lush valleys to decaying fortresses and cobwebbed dungeons, Darksiders moves beyond its subject material to visualize a colorful world typically represented with greys and reds. If you are inclined to like the stylistic nature of this game, everything is a visual treat. I had not previously been a fan of Joe Madureira, but this game easily won me over. Enemy and boss variety, environmental structures, and weapon/artifact models blend seamlessly into the surroundings.

A FEW MINOR QUIRKS:

Despite all of my glowing points,... the game has a few very small annoyances. Many of the upgradeable tokens feature similar attributes, and some will only work effectively when applied to certain weapons. A larger variety and the ability to map them to all weapons equally would have made them more appealing.

Minor weapon artifacts (Crossblade/Mercy Revolver/Earthcaller) will probably see less action in battle when exploring since you must have navigational artifacts (Portal gun/ Abyssal Grappling Chain/Mask of Shadows) assigned and selected to move about the terrain. Ultimately, this will cause you to rely more on the "true" secondary weapons (Scythe/Tremor Gauntlet) rather than constantly pausing to switch out gear in the menu. Having some artifacts automatically triggered when you aimed at certain points (Like Metroid Prime) may have been the better choice for grappling, using portals, or activating switches with the Crossblade. The grappling hook also only works in a straight line (meaning you cannot use it to reach some locations more easily once you have found the artifact).

Several sections also have reoccurring moments where enemies respawn and doors are locked, forcing you to combat them all. These are not terrible, but some seem to have been placed to extend game time in certain locations.

The flight sequence (similar to Panzer Dragoon) does not allow you to invert the cursor for shooting, which makes it difficult for people who are used to inverted controls.

These are very minor issues in relation to the final package.

CONCLUSION:

Overall, I cannot wait to play the next installment of this game. Darksiders was crafted by a team of highly skilled developers, clearly with the gamer in mind. If you judge this game based on the merits of an hour long tutorial (as I originally did), you are doing yourself a GREAT disservice. I recently replayed Zelda: Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 2 and God of War 3. I can tell you this game is absolutely not a cookie-cutter representation of any one of those games. Although I enjoy playing all of them, I actually like the tone and atmosphere of this game slightly more. Moreover, the ending of this game is immensely superior to all three of those games. The last time I remember playing a game and feeling the end was worth my invested time was Uncharted 2.

DARKSIDERS is a fantastic package and comes highly recommended by a converted 2-star believer. (8.8/10)

Yes, I really mean it when I say that this game is actually better than God of War. In fact I am an avid gamer and have played hundreds of different games and completed them ever since I have been a small child. Darksiders is one of the best games that I have ever played. If you are an action adventure roleplaying fan then you will love this game that is a perfect mix of God of War, World of Warcraft, and Zelda. This title somehow flies under the radar as being one of PS3's most popular games...I don't know why. Maybe because of the subject matter...it definitely is meant for a more mature audience. Anyways, pick up this game. I guarantee you will love it. War is the man! I cannot wait for Darksiders 2! \m/

For anyone that played NFS:Hot Pursuit, one could argue the only thing that game was missing was a "freeplay" mode (ala Test Drive Unlimited 2) to run over any part of the map you wanted. But the gameplay was top notch, as was the online multiplayer, which shows why NFS: Hot Pursuit still has a strong following.

And while I can appreciate what EA tried to do with NFS: The Run, it's just not done very well.

For a full retail game ($60) to be over in THREE hours, that's not acceptable in a racing game considering that Blur could take you several WEEKS to work through, along with racers like Dirt 3, Gran Turismo 5, etc. This means unless you're a trophy hunter or a die-hard online player, the game's over in about the time it takes to play an NFL game on Sunday. So for this reason, I suggest if you don't fall into the categories I just mentioned, give this a rental.

From a graphics standpoint, the game looks awesome, especially during the cutscenes and the areas you'll be driving. However when the graphics is the strongest point of the game, you've got a problem right there.

One of the things that has plagued the Shift series of games is the floaty handling. And one of the things that made NFS:Hot Pursuit so GOOD was how well that game handled. Sadly, in NFS: The Run, it seems you're driving a Land Rover instead of a Zonda. It's extremely hard to execute good, drifting turns, hard to weave in and out of the environmental scenes (which Split/Second did far better and more convincingly), and more often then not, you end up wrecking. While the "rewind" feature is nice, a 10 second interruption in the gameplay is not while you're waiting to get back in the race.

Furthermore, if you're going to have a story you better care about the "main" character. Unfortunately, it seems like EA went to the Paris Hilton school of "souless" acting because while the cutscenes look cool, you're really not getting a sense of intrigue (OMG, we have to win, Jack owes $25M, he's going to die if he doesn't pay. Get the ___ out of my way, I gotta win! Erm, no so much).

I had VERY high hopes for this game. But coming out around the same time Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, Batman, Saints Row and MW3, and containing about 1/10 of the gameplay time, I simply can't recommend buying this game except for the most diehard Autolog/achievement hunter.

And it's a shame. We want developers to push the edge, and then crack back on them when they fail. As much as I'd like to see EA make another go at this, you're probably going to see a return closer to what Hot Pursuit was then you'll see another "The Run" type of game.

Pros:

Great graphics and sound

Autolog and lots of achievements to chase

Cons:

WAY too short at 2-4 hours long

Bare multiplayer modes compared to NFS:Hot Pursuit

Sluggish controls/responsiveness

Lack of connection with the story

I give The Run 5 stars and I'm puzzled that there are so many complaints and 1 star ratings. I have several of the PS3 racing games, Grid, Dirt 1,2&3, GT, NFS series, and they all take a little getting used to, at least for me. Once you get the hang of it, it's simply a blast. With The Run, you get to street race in San Francisco against oncoming traffic or weave in and out of traffic on an LA freeway with spectacular graphics. Seriously, what's not to like. I'm about a third of the way thru, playing the challenges along the way and I think The Run is a 5 star addition to my game collection. That's my 2 cents.

Buy Need for Speed: The Run Now

Black Box is not Criteron Games, so I wasn't expecting anything nearly as good as Hot Pursuit. With that being said, I haven't been disappointed yet. The tracks all look amazing as do the cars. Yes, some of them are hard to handle but if you're having a hard time, just use a car with normal handling and you'll be ok. But there is great reward in mastering tracks with cars that are harder to handle as you'll take seconds off your lap time as you sacrifice easier handling for speed. There is a lot of rubber banding AI though. There's been several races that I've been on the final stretch, saw someone coming in behind me and I punch the nitro and they still fly right past me and beat me by a split second...and I started it on easy just so I could familiarize myself with the tracks. The cops in this game are more annoying than they are fun like in Hot Pursuit too. I can't count how many times so far that I'd go to drift around a turn only to be super human rammed by some cop and go flying right off a cliff or the path.

Speaking of that, the game also seems to have a problem with you being off of the beaten path. If it's not a shortcut or the actual road, the game will make you rewind (an annoying feature added that takes you back to your last checkpoint). It's a nice feature for when you wreck but more often than not, you're going to be seeing it because your car was slightly just past the cones or you were bumped through the yellow turn there arrows because they aren't an invisible wall in this game. My favorite so far has been getting a ton of air from a jump that I think I bounced off a tanker truck and then somehow I wrecked before I even hit the ground (and it would have been a perfect landing!). Bottom line is this game could have a lot of epic and cool moments but it prevents itself from ever allowing it. I'm also not a fan of a "story" mode in my racing games.

This game does have a rather interesting story, but it seems like it doesn't know how to go about it. Any rival races are introduced to you as text on the loading screen and that's all. But then you randomly have these poor looking cutscenes, and by poor I mean a lot of shading pixels around Jack (the guy you're racing as) and the frame rate often stutters a lot during them. On top of not being very visually pleasing, they tend to have some quick time events in there. There is nothing worse than quick time events. But the concept of racing across the US actually does work in the games favor by having a very wide and very nice variety of tracks. And while the story mode is rather short, there's good reason.

The game seems more focused on competing with friends (which hopefully you're not like me and actually have friends who did buy this game hah) so while yes, the story is fairly short, it's also to encourage you to replay it to surpass a friends autolog completion time for the campaign. But if you're not one to car for competition, then there are a good amount of challenge modes that unlock as you complete each stage in the campaign. You'll find yourself trying to better your lap times as you try to attain platinum medals for your efforts in these challenges. There are online modes, which seem to have a focus on working as a team but as i mentioned earlier, I don't currently have any psn friends who have this game yet. Hopefully after black friday that will be remedied but for now, I haven't had a chance to play online just yet.

All in all, the game is actually a lot of fun. The bugs in the game are in the parts that no one should really care about and the cars all handle well. It takes some getting used to since again, this isn't Hot Pursuit and the controls don't feel as great at first but with the right car, you'll have little to no problems drifting around tight corners. The asking price does seem a little steep so maybe wait til you can get it cheaper, but by all means this game offers quite a bit to do as long as you have friends to compete with.

Before I start off with this review, I would like you to know that I have been an avid supporter of the NFS series for years. I have played every single NFS game except for the first one and Shift 2. No, Pro Street never happened so I have never touched that game.

What I liked:

1. Thanks to Frostbite 2, the graphics look really good. The environment really shines. The cars aren't too shabby either.

2. The cars sounds fine. They aren't mind-blowing, but they're decent.

3. The quick=time events are surprisingly decent. I didn't mind them at all.

4. Personally, I like the licensed soundtrack a lot. It is pretty much a blend of alternative and rock.

5. Just a fun fact. Christina Hendricks plays a role in the game.

6. The cover looks pretty rad.

What I didn't like:

1. Compared to Hot Pursuit's feel of playing with toy cars, this one feels like pushing a cardboard box around. The vehicles don't feel alive. There is no sense of satisfaction in the driving portion. That could be a matter of preference though.

2. The game doesn't really pick up until your 80% into the game, when you start driving the ultra high end cars.

3. Very much similar to other non=simulation NFS titles, this game relies heavily on rubberband AI. Your opponents always catch up. You never get to the first place until the final seconds. The rubberband AI causes extreme frustrations on plenty of occasions.

4. The developer claimed that they placed a much larger emphasis on the storyline of the game. So the plot basically revolves around this guy named Jack who needs to win the cash in order to fend off the mob. Sam, his friend, hooked him up on the race. That's it. That's the entire storyline, literally. There are no further background information (such as why the mob was so interested in Jack, who are backing the race, what's the relationship between Sam and Jack).

5. Rival match ups are pointless. The game provides background info on them but never mentions why are they your rivals. In addition, their "challenges" aren't all that different from any other regular races in the game.

6. Considering it's a game named "Need for Speed", one would figure the game to bear more of a sense of speed. Surprisingly, you can't tell the difference between driving at 120 and 180.

7, The new rewind feature is essentially a checkpoint system like any other shooter games out there. What I didn't like about it is how the game seems to be built around this very feature. Whenever you get into a car crash, you'll start off at one of the checkpoints instead of just having your car reset. In addition, if you are unable to stay on the road even for a tiny bit, you'll be sent back to the most recent checkpoint.

8. The "career" is only slightly over 2 hours long. You will, however, be spending a lot longer than that since you will reattempt the races many times due to factors mentioned above. As a result, the game becomes a lot more frustrating than it should be.

Bottomline:

It's simply not worthy of a three year development cycle and is certainly not full price. Wait till it's in the bargain bin. You know what, even when it's in the bargain bin, don't get it. It's not an experience unique enough to command a fan base of its own. Just get Midnight Club: Los Angeles if you're looking for a budget arcade racing game, or NFS Hot Pursuit if you can shed out some more cash.

As a long time follower of the Need for Speed franchise; once again I have to said that this game was a disappointment! I am convinced that EA has totally lost touch with what consumer wants from the game. Dragon Age: Origins is a fantastic RPG with a fresh, challenging, vibrant new world to journey in. With that said...

Awakenings is more glorified DLC (with flaws) than an a quality expansion.

The story, perhaps understandably, is rather direct. For the type of game this is, it fits. This is pretty much hack 'n' slash with some dialogue thrown in. The whole interpersonal aspect of the original is mostly gone. My wife misses the tales and long nights with Alistair & Zevron; I tend to run around just killing things; but I miss the choice of interacting with NPCs. It lacks ambience, but again, that owes a bit more to flavor of Origins than a failing of Awakenings. Some nice things are thrown in, like runes and very sweet weapons. Graphics, although not earth shattering, are very alluring.

What does fail about awakenings is the lack of difficulty. I brought in a level 25 character (level 35 cap is a joke) and ran around with my 3 NPCs almost naked (Velanna smacks a mean punch) on nightmare and tore through grunts & bosses. The boss battles lasted literally under two minutes each. The frame drops and slowness during battles & using stealth is discouraging. Also, some of the quests are insanely short. And the ending (and one of the main quests) is as anti-climatic of any ending in any book, movie or game I have come across. Ever.

Overall, it is an enjoyable, low difficulty hack 'n' slash; but not close to memorable. With such high standards in Origins, this seems rushed, done for profit and amateurish in a sense. Like Bioware let relatively promising interns take over the project while they work on DA2.

All the best.

I bought this game for the PS3. I love Dragon Age: Origins and was insanely excited to get my hands on this expansion. My husband and I played Origins together, made several characters, and have gone through the story half a dozen times over the past few months. We got tired of this expansion in one weekend. The expansion just feels rushed and incomplete, and it doesn't fit well with Origins for me. It doesn't feel at all like the same game that I loved.

The storyline here seems to be more linear than in the original Origins, but it's also more vague. I wasn't sure what exactly was going on half the time that I was playing, and just seemed to be rushing aimlessly from one dot on the map to another.

Also, the game seems to have a lot of glitches. I lost interest pretty quickly during one of the first main quests when everyone in town got angry at my character for "choosing the other side," when I hadn't even done anything yet. The entire quest just glitched and I couldn't do anything in the town after that.

Another favorite glitch would be clicking on an item that I want to pick up, suddenly having a party member try to talk to me instead, and then the game blacks out and my character winds up on a part of the map that isn't even accessible (such as behind a cliff, enveloped in blackness, or stuck in the middle of a swamp).

In Origins, I really felt like my characters were defining themselves, growing in their own unique way, and forming unique relationships based on their choices. In Awakening, I feel like my character is wandering aimlessly, easily hacking and slashing down weak enemies, and it's all pointless and linear.

I loved talking to party members, having conversations, and giving out gifts in Origins. In this game, you can still talk to the party members at certain times and can still give them gifts, but I find myself wondering what the point even is. The whole thing just seems more shallow. Even with my imported characters, I found myself unable to care about the characters on the screen, and they seemed so boring and unfamiliar.

All in all, this game is an incredible disappointment. I loved Origins, but this one doesn't have anywhere near the charm of Origins. I kept hoping that I'd get more into the game, but I found myself bored for the most part, and then frustrated whenever it glitched. It's a huge disappointment. I'm returning my copy...

I have to say enjoyed this expansion and personally feel it was worth the money. I am a self-professed Dragon Age obsessee. The new spells and abilities are fun to play around with, and I like the new characters.

I imported my old character (a female human noble) and was happy to see Alistair's reaction to her, as she married him at the end of DA:O. Seeing old characters again was also fun, and I love the one they chose to return as a companion/follower.

Also, since I didn't have her equipped with anything from the DLC, she had all of her armor and everything, including some odds and ends she'd still had in her inventory I hadn't bothered to sell before the final battle. [I've read that armor loss is a problem for those with DLC armor equipped at the end of the game, but I am hopeful there will eventually be a free patch for this.]

However, I do have a few tiny issues. You can't talk to your companions to have actual dialogues with them, just a pop-up sentence or two when you select them, and your returning companion loses all of his affection for you so you have to win it all over again.

And...the new spells and abilities weren't terribly useful to me. They're great. I mean, who doesn't want to raise the dead? But I could do just as well in the battles, it seems, without them and just using the ability boosts. Don't get me wrong. I wouldn't trade them, but I am slightly disappointed.

I love Dragon Age, and for me, this expansion was worth the money. I don't know that every Dragon Age player would agree, however. It isn't an epic adventure, being only an expansion, and it doesn't cost much less than the original.

I can recommend it for those who really love the game and want more of it, in any form. If that isn't you, I think you should look into this expansion before buying it, particularly if you don't have $40 to burn.

...would have been called a "dud," but stick "Dragon Age" in front of it, and people will like it.

At least that's what I thought before reading the reviews here. Critical response (at least that which I read) to this expansion was generally positive, and so after a few months and a long-awaited price drop, I decided to try this out. I wish I had read the reviews here first.

As it turns out, this is a weak and seemingly-hurried affair. Even for $25, it's not worth it (the quest is around 15 hours long the first time through with no guide, but significantly less after that).

Strangely, despite the fact that I can't find much good with the title, I still give it two stars. The fact is, the "Dragon Age" universe is interesting enough that even poorly-constructed storylines such as this still manage to hold a modicum of fascination. I will confess that I was interested more in the subtle differences in scenes depending on the character I imported than with anything that the story gave to me, but even THIS had problems. So anyway,

THE GOOD:

1) It's Dragon Age. You get to see another part of Ferelden. Sure, it looks like every other part of Ferelden you saw before, but it's something. I guess. Honestly, the coolest thing about the game was getting the armor and weapons that Master Wade created. The sword even gets its own ending sequence.

THE BAD:

1) What a glitch-filled mess. I have no idea if the downloaded version is better, but this version is just pathetic, technically speaking. First, you have to accept a patch to play it. For even, even though I had a LATER patch, the game (when played online) still prompted me to take the earlier patch. What a joke.

Hilariously, if you are using armor from other DLC, when starting up "Awakenings," you'll be in...your underwear. That's right "Awakenings" doesn't like your earlier DLC. It's hilarious to see your hero of Ferelden in little more than a birthday suit to start his second quest.

In addition, many of your codex entries will be deleted. The game still seems to recognize that you have them, but you can't read them in "Awakenings" (the biggest offenders are the "quest-related" entries from the original "DA:O"). There are other glitches lots of them, in fact, but you get the picture. More of the same from Bioware.

2) One of the great things about this game should have been the ability to import previous characters. Unfortunately, this is screwed up as well. The manual clearly states that you can import dead characters and they will be alive. That's an...odd design decision (particularly given Bioware's stance on their "Mass Effect" franchise), but whatever.

What is even stranger is that many of the decisions you've made won't even register in the new expansion. For example, I imported a rogue who allied with Loghain and sided with Anora in "DA:O". Yet, who came to greet me in "Awakenings"? King Alistair, of course. When last I left Alistair, he was presumed to be a derelict living out his remaining days in drunken misery. Apparently, he's now king. Good one.

3) Who thought up this ridiculous story? It literally makes my head hurt. In what world would the Grey Wardens even CONSIDER teaming up with the Darkspawn? This crap is weak for a JRPG, for crying out loud. I don't really want to say more, for fear of spoiling the story, but honestly, you WANT to have this nonsense spoiled. Trust me.

It's always a bad idea to ask for someone to overact insanity, but whoever does the voice for "The Mother" (very original) really takes this to the nth degree. The Architect is slightly better, but enough of the calm tactician. These are Darkspawn, people.

Anyway, that's it. I suppose any of the bad comments could double for ugly comments as well, but long story short, this might be worth $10 later on. More than that, and it just fails to satisfy.

Like many who thoroughly enjoyed Dragon Age: Origins, I was very excited when I heard that Bioware was releasing an expansion pack, and pre-ordered it along with a strategy guide. I think many would agree with me when I say that Bioware needed to give this one more time in development. In terms of glitches, I almost wasn't able to get the game to play at all--took FOREVER to load; I had to restart my system a few times. Also, there were instances when my character's arms froze in a "hands up" position and remained that way unless I reloaded the game. Other times, everything would freeze, and again, the only solution was reloading. As for importing DLC, I had none to bring in, so I can't comment on that.

The gameplay was okay, but it felt too linear, and the emphasis was more on hack-and-slash rather than outwitting your opponents. The side quests were trivial and rarely did much to help your cause. The new specializations, abilities and items were nice, but did not make up for the disappointing storyline and characters.

One of the things which Bioware's Mass Effect was known for was the carry-over of your actions into its expansion pack. I hardly saw any of that in Awakening. Aside from the major decisions made in Origins (i.e., who was left to rule Ferelden, whether you saved the Circle Tower), many of your actions in Origins are entirely ignored. Even if you are royalty, the fact is treated an an afterthought. I imported a human noble female who had become Alistair's queen in Origins, and was referred to as "Warden Commander" for the duration of the game and given no special treatment. At a minimum, you would think a royal character would at least have a few top-notch weapons and some extra security forces. Apparently, the "dark ritual" ending with Morrigan seems to be cannon based upon the fact that you have the option of importing a deceased character. Even if it is not, if you did opt for it, what became of Morrigan is not revealed (no mention of her is made during the game). In the origin story of my imported character, Anora was deposed and imprisoned in the tower, but what happened to her afterward is not mentioned in Awakening, either (frankly, she could have made a better antagonist than the actual ones, but I digress). There is no romance in Awakening (unless you count a good-bye kiss from Alistair at the beginning of the game if you imported a character that married him), whether you begin a new origin story or import a character from Origins. So the pleasure of fighting alongside your love (or finding a new one) is absent. The Joining ritual has been trivialized this time around; even though one minor character dies, its gravity has been diminished by virtue of the fact that so many can survive it during the game without incident. The game is brief and the story itself slow: it doesn't take long to complete the game itself, and just when the pace of events begins to pick up, you find yourself on a direct path to the final battle.

I found the new characters to be, for the most part disappointing. My companion characters from Origins had their own unique personalities, depth, individual hopes and dreams, and I found myself sympathizing with and willing to do anything for them (well, not Oghren). The Origins characters gave the player a real sense of camaraderie. When asked to describe those from Awakening, words such as "bland", "generic", "filler" and "pedestrian" are all applicable. Anders occasionally has his moments and Nathaniel Howe provides at least some connection to Origins, particularly if you imported a human noble character. Sadly, the only companion who returns from Origins to join your party is Oghren. This time around, he's even more of a detestable drunken reprobate than before. Of all the original characters to bring back, Bioware had to give us the worst one! I HATED OGHREN!!! Most everyone I know who played Origins hated him as well. And from what I understand, even the people at Bioware who created him aren't too fond of him either. Bioware, please keep this in mind for next time! A better option would have been to include a feature that would have allowed the player to select one of their old companions to import along with their character, or to have allowed your love interest to come with an imported character.

Unlike in Origins where you could have conversations with your companions almost any time, the conversations with your companions in Awakening occur almost exclusively in Vigil's Keep. The exception is when they are triggered by "random" objects, which are easy to miss. Remember how in Origins you could win over your companions through dialogue just as much (if not more so in some cases) as with gifts? It seems that for the most part in Awakening, getting on the good side of your companions stems more from gift giving rather than on building a rapport with them, making it feel more like you're buying them off. The personal quests are nowhere near as meaningful as they were in Origins, either. Instead of helping one of your friends restore their honor, or saving them from certain death, or find closure, about half of those in Awakening involve simply raising your companion's approval high enough that they open up to you or running some errand. During the latter stages of the game, you are forced to decide who to leave at Vigil's Keep while you and three others go to save the besieged city of Amaranthine. If you choose to save Amaranthine, those you left behind will be killed in a siege. My point in mentioning this is that when the time came, what should have been a decision that tugged at your heartstrings was not a big deal--the connection with this group just wasn't there.

The ending was also a major let-down. One of the main antagonists, "The Architect" claims to be able to stop the Blights in the future if you side with him, destroy "The Mother", and allow him to continue his research. It just comes off as not being believable. Regardless of your choice, after you defeat the final boss, your "ending" consists of the main character stabbing The Mother through the skull with their sword. The group turns around and simply walks away, and you get about a dozen or so paragraphs detailing what happens to the characters in the aftermath. Even though it says that your character's story is not over, it's still a downer.

Overall, I would give this game a two and a half out of five stars (personally, I think the game magazines and web sites have been too generous with it). Would I recommend it? I honestly can't say. It depends on how big a Dragon Age fan you are and what kind of story you've written for yourself in Origins. Again, the story could have been much better (and longer); I found myself wishing I had my old companions with me, and to be honest, the whole thing felt kind of soulless. The new abilities and action was OK, but it takes more than that to make a game great. As an expansion for Origins, this could have been a lot more than what it is Bioware had invested the time that it should have. An opportunity truly missed. Don't get me wrong--with Dragon Age: Origins, Bioware created one of the best games I've ever played, an almost impossible act to follow, and I appreciate what Bioware tried to do with Awakening. I understand that Bioware has something in the works for February 2011. Hopefully, Bioware will learn from this and give whatever they are working on the time it needs to be a worthy addition to the Dragon Age series, even if it means delaying the release.

I was hoping that this game would be great, but it is very disappointing. Since I'm older than most gamers, and also enjoy The History Channel, I thought this game would be at least very good to me. It's not. It's medicore at best, and a disappointing effort from Activision and The History Channel. The game sounds good on paper. You get to take part in some of the most famous battle of The Civil War, along with some historical information from The History Channel to send you on your way. It just doesn't work. You get a few sentences, and then sent on your way. When the mission is complete, you pretty much get nothing other than a stat screen. As for the features of the game, the graphics are nothing special. The music and narrative are very repetitive, and get old fast. The gameplay is frustrating. There is no multiplayer, and the solo missions get old fast. I give the game 3 stars only because I'm a history buff. Otherwise it's much closer to 2 stars.

For those who did not like "A Nation Divided" I would recomend you give this a try. Although it has the some of the makings of the first game it has much more depth of environment. The outdoor environments are impressive. Gameplay is linear but you have the option in some cases to flank your opponent and approach from a different angle. Another addition to this game is the rank system. As you complete missions and kill more enemies you rank up and get skill points you can use to improve your gameplay. I have this game for PS3 and I think it is much better than the first one. Anyone who likes FPS's and the American Civil War will like this game.

Although the historical accuracy can be non-existent at times, "Civil War: Secret Missions" is a fun, exciting game in the tradition of the classic "Medal of Honor" games, putting you in the middle of the events that saw our country torn asunder, and then brought back together. It's a bit challenging at times, but the game-play is overall fun and exciting. If you enjoyed "Medal of Honor," then you'll enjoy "Civil War: Secret Missions."

Grade: B+

This a good but standard first person shooter game. I would have expected

better historical content from the History Channel.

The game came scratched but still worked. It was not what I expected. There is some action but not as much as I expected. Not hard to beat at all. A seven year old beat a level on hard in less than 15 minutes. Here are some good things about the game it tells you about the Civil War history. Over all I would get it. It is a good game. That is why I gave it 3 stars.

I think this game should be recalled. There are too many issues to list but a couple are: extremely slow load times, too many areas in game where disk needs to load, bad point of view on characters (meaning you can't see where the character is going because the screenshot is showing an area that is of no importance), maneuverability of characters is terrible. I have never written a review of a product but hopefully this will save people money and they will buy a different game.

If you read through the net, you will find very similiar comments on this game regardless of the platform. 95% of the reviews for this game are bad. A few personal comments. While the CGI for the crossover scenes between levels are decent (not that great but ok), the graphics during the game play is dissapointing. The basic game play is aweful too. I found myself dying not because of being killed by a villain but rather from me falling off some cliff (or rather) due to bad camera angles. It's not fun when you don't have a reason to die and yet you do. If you want to be frustrated for hours, then get it. Or else, save your money and buy a better game.

I wish I had rented it, cause it is ALWAYS loading, you spend at least 70% of the time waiting for it to load. Not only that but often times you don't actually play/control sonic during the game. I bought this game because of the good times I had with dreamcast, all honest, this one is a #@*!% of #$@% !

Sega really flopped on this one. I treid playing it for a few hours..the camera angles, yes you can adjust them..but as soon as you start running again, they resume their same terrible view point. This is the biggest waste of my money...Don't buy it!

i bought this at a brick and mortar store on impulse. what a sad waste of $20. bad game play, bad angles, bad story line, bad everything. i was thinking that it would be a normal sonic platform game. i was sadly mistaken. my only hope is to give it away to someone dumber than me. i'm just that mean. i hope sega is able to redeem itself in the future.
