After having used a Harmony 676 to control all my devices, I was not happy when I needed to use the PS3 controller to control Blu Ray movie watching.

This remote's dongle does the job in letting my Harmony 676 control the PS3. There was one problem that almost led me to return the remote however, and I wanted to mention the solution here.

Problem (for Harmony remotes):

On the PS3 XMB (Cross Media Bar), the directional buttons would move the selection several spots for each key press. I read several posts and tried teaching & re-teaching the Harmony. I tried teaching using the "Raw" IR learning but that would slow down the response from the PS3 to each key press.

Solution:

Within the Harmony program, go to Devices->PS3 and select "troubleshoot" under device options.

Select "Show me more problems" (last choice).

Then select the choice "PS3 doesn't appear to receive every command correctly," and the select "The device responds too much to some commands (for example, volume up increases the volume too quickly)."

In the screen with the radio buttons, select '0'.

Save & update the remote and everything the directional buttons will work perfectly.

The Playstation 3 uses RF (bluetooth) for its wireless remotes. This is great for a game remote, but less convenient for a BluRay player remote, since it makes it incompatible with universal remotes, which communicate using infrared (IR). Sony sells a DVD-style remote, but it also works by RF. Unlike the XBox 360, which uses RF for its controllers but includes an IR port for DVD player style remotes, the PS3 has no IR sensor at all.

However, there is a workaround, because the PS3 also supports wired controllers via its USB ports (which is also how you recharge the controllers). Nyko has cleverly taken advantage of this by producing an IR remote that emulates the USB wired controller. You simply plug a USB dongle with an IR sensor into one of the USB ports, and then you can use the Nyko IR remote--or a Harmony remote, if you teach it the commands from the Nyko.

This works quite well. There are some inherent limitations, however. In particular, this approach means that the Nyko remote is only able to support the commands that you can execute with the PS3 controller, and does not provide some of the additional commands available on the PS3 bluetooth remote. So no power key, angle key, or eject key. But it does emulate all of the digital controls of the PS3 controller (i.e. everything but the analog sticks), which makes it fine for controlling the player. I don't mind the lack of a power control as I leave my PS3 on all the time anyway, since it isn't noisy like the XBox 360, and I have set it to donate unused computing power to the Folding@home scientific project. And if I'm going to eject a disk, I have to walk over to get it anyway, so I might as well push the button on the PS3.

I had good success teaching the Nyko's IR commands to a Harmony universal remote. This mostly went well, although the square command seems to be difficult to learn properly, and took a couple of dozen takes to get it right.

If you are simply buying a remote for your PS3 to play Bluray disk do not buy this remote. Buy the authentic bluetooth remote that Sony makes and it's control is superior and flawless. This remote's advantage is you can use the USB dongle included to make your PS3 accept commands from a universal remote control such as Harmony.

So if you want a remote to control your Bluray watching, but you insist on using your universal remote for everything this is the ticket. (one remote to control everything) Just attach the USB dongle to your PS3, and then learn the commands from the Blu Wave remote to your Harmony or other universal remote and you're good to go.

Edit 09/04/2008: While I did love how the Blu Wave remote allowed me to use my universal remote it is not without its problems and limitations. It cannot turn on/off the PS3, and often it sends commands twice when browsing through the menus which can be very frustrating. I've now upgraded to the PS3IR-PRO which is a little black box that takes the IR commands from your remote and resends them out via Bluetooth exactly like the official Sony remote commands. This makes usage flawless and you also get all 51 buttons on the official Sony Bluetooth remote, I love it. It also allows you to turn on and off the PS3 with one button that can be programmed into your universal remote. It does cost approximately $100, but its a far superior product. Ultimately your choice depends on your specific needs.

I recently purchased this product to allow me to control my PS3 for DVD playback using my Harmony remote (model 880). Many others have also purchased the Blu-Wave for the same purpose, but it appears as most have programmed their Harmony by having it "learn" the Blu-Wave's remote codes. I found a much easier way to get the Harmony remotes programmed.

Just add a new device "Game Console (with DVD)". Select the Manufacture of Nyko and enter "Blu-Wave" as the Model (they actually give you an example of what to enter for Model and that is the model they use for their example). Complete adding the device, with no other changes. Then update or create the "Watch a DVD" activity and specify the new device as your DVD player. I found that I had to tweak some of the button settings, but most of button were set correctly.

As others have stated, I wish Nyko had provided some of the other buttons that appear on the Sony remote (Eject, Angles, ...) and at least a way to turn off the PS3 (like the PS button).

Thanks to the following tips from other Reviewers, it works like a champ. Like many others, I am using it with a Harmony 880 and I don't care if I can't turn the power on or off. You have to get up to get the disc anyway so who cares. But the command where I ask one of my kids to please get the disk and put it away seems to not work very well:)

To Eject a disk;

Press 'Stop' to stop the movie and get back to the main menu. I think you need to press the 'O' button and then 'yes' after stopping the movie. You should be at the location where the DVD icon is highlighted. Press the triangle button and an eject disk command will appear to the right of the screen. Select this and it will eject. So you could probably get it to work by programming a macro button. But this is not a big deal to me since I want to get the disk and just press the button on the PS3.

Very Helpful Tip #1 from a previous reviewer:

There is no such thing as "Playstation 3" Ethernet cable. This is simply a lie. Any Ethernet cable will work perfectly with the Playstation 3, and they cost about $3 (not $12). Don't get ripped off. Buy a standard Ethernet cable in the length that you need (or just use the Wi-Fi connection on the Playstation 3).

I bought this item because I wasn't sure if I needed some special type of Ethernet cable in order to hook my PS3 to our modem. It's just like any other Ethernet cable available. It works perfectly, and I'm glad that I got it. However, I'm sure you could find a cheaper Ethernet cable that wasn't listed under Playstation 3.

MadCatz might have a sordid history when it comes to licensed game peripherals, but they're RockBand lineup is nothing short of impressive. The Coffin Case gig bag has got to be one of the finest guitar controller carrying cases I've seen yet, short of buying an actual guitar case. It's actually nicer than some of the legitimate Coffin Cases for real guitars.

The exterior is beautifully textured with a scull and bones pattern and an official Coffin Case stamp. It has hand straps on the zippered side and a top strap and bottom clip for an optional shoulder strap (included inside the case). The interior is very soft and plush satin red. There is even a little black mesh cargo bag inside that is just big enough to hold the shoulder strap and XBOX 360 headset adapter (not included). Honestly, this is a nice case that could almost be mistaken for the real deal if it weren't for the size. The only perceivable flaw is that it feels kind of flimsy for a guitar bag, but that's just my opinion and not everyone who has carried the case agrees with me.

In fact, this soft case is almost preferable to the hard display Coffin Case because there's more pliable room (for guitar straps and manuals) and...it's cheaper. I really can't recommend this enough for anyone who wants to carry their RockBand guitars in style.

On a side note I'm not certain how well this case accommodates Guitar Hero guitars; it was made specifically for the RockBand Fender Stratocaster replica guitar controller lineup, but I'm positive it will hold the Guitar Hero Les Paul replica guitar controllers with plenty of room to spare. Ironically, it won't hold the MadCatz Fender Precision Bass replica unless the detachable tuning head is removed, but who wants to keep pulling the head off the guitar to stow it in a case? I'm not sure how well it will hold The Beatles RockBand guitar controller lineup or the new Fender Telecaster replica either, but I'm itching to find out just as soon as they hit the market.

well, color me surprised.

after having been disappointed by the last couple of CoD games, i was hesitant to purchase black ops 2. a lot of the gripes and criticisms of black ops 1 and more particularly MW3, were wholly justified. but, being the sucker that i am, i forked over $60 because i love me a FPS and i really enjoyed combat training in the first black ops (more on combat training in a minute). after having spent nearly a week with the game, here's my verdict:

campaign in short, it's a massive improvement over the last four CoD campaigns. i don't think it's stretch to say it's the best CoD campaign since CoD4. yes, it still looks dated (very dated, actually), but what it lacks in snappy graphics it makes up for in pure fun. all the trailers leading up the game led me to believe the campaign took place in the future. well, only about half the game takes place in the future. the other half takes place during the last days of the cold war. all the protagonists from BO1 are back and they all still speak like testosterone-happy alpha males (the franchise really, really needs legit writers who can write dialogue). however, the gunplay is what matters and that's where BO2 excels. first of all, you can customize your load out before you start every mission. it's a nice touch that allows you play your way. not all guns, attachments, camos, etc are available right off the bat (you have to unlock them like you do in the multiplayer), but it's a nice change. the campaign also gives you several choices in the game that will affect the outcome. this is practically unheard of in FPS games, so kudos to treyarch for mixing it up and bringing something new. each mission also has a series of ten challenges specific to that particular level. some of the challenges are fairly easy, but some are very challenging. and sometimes the only way to complete all the challenges is to replay the mission. the only part of the campaign i don't care for is the strike force missions (but that's probably because i suck at real time strategy games).

multiplayer ah, the great love-it-or-loathe aspect to all call of duty games. i haven't played any CoD multiplayer since MW2. i got sick of the glitching, camping, obsession with killstreaks, etc. BO2 isn't a drastic departure from the formula, but it's a least an improvement. scorestreaks have replace killsteaks which encourages more team play. smart move. the maps are much improved, in my opinion, from BO1. in fact, there's not a map i don't care for. the sound design is 1000 times better. where in BO1 it sounded like you were shooting pop guns and peashooters (pew pew pew), the guns in BO2 are hefty, beefy and actually have some bass. they sound great. not BFBC2 great, but close enough. i haven't experienced all the freezing on my ps3 that many others have noticed, but the lag is absolutely horrendous. rubberbanding is non-stop, hit detection is often spotty, and with 650,000 people online at any given time, i'm not sure why it can take five or six minutes to get a game started. but, despite it's flaws, it's the most fun i've had on a CoD multiplayer since CoD4.

zombies again, kudos to treyarch for not resting on their laurels and simply regurgitating past incarnations of this mode. sure, it's still zombies, but in addition to the tradition survival mode, you now have the tranzit mode and griefing mode. i haven't played too many zombie matches (i don't last long anyway when i do), but it's definitely fun and challenging.

combat training honestly, combat training, for me, was the best part of BO1. sometimes i just want to kick back, practice, own the AI, play with a friend or two and not worry about having to listen to a bunch of hopped up pre-pubsecent, vulgar kids. combat training was the main reason i bought BO2. unfortunately, combat training as we knew it no longer exists. you can still set up bots and play games, but there's not combat training progression. i was really disappointed about that. all the guns and unlocks are available right from the beginning, which isn't a bad thing, but part of the fun of multiplayer and combat training is the ever-present allure of unlocks. on the positive side, all game modes are available in bot games (free for all, team deathmatch, kill confirmed, domination, headquarters, etc). i really wish there were a combat training progression, but you can't win them all.

all in BO2 is without a doubt the best all-around CoD game since CoD4, in my opinion. there's plenty to admire and my hat's off to treyarch for making a concerted effort to try something new. given CoD's popularity they certainly didn't have to do it, but that fact that they did earns my respect. just hire some better writers next time.

Buy this in few weeks and it will be fine. It's buggy and online is just a mess for PS3. CoD games get frequent updates and I'm sure they will have this sorted out in a couple weeks. So if you can avoid freaking out and melting down, read on.

1) If you gave this one star, you probably shouldn't have bought it (or didn't and are trolling). It is exactly what you expect from any CoD game.

2) The PS3 version online is jacked up in the first couple day. THIS IS NOTHING NEW FOR CoD OR ANY OTHER FPS. It is simply a continuing tradition of shooters not working right on release. A couple weeks from now, things will smooth out and the game will work fine.

3) Zombie mode is bigger and better. It is really fun and a great co-op mode. It's still not Left4Dead, but it does offer some replay and something for people that don't like being cursed at by ignorant people online.

4) The campaign has MORE to offer than any of the recent CoD's. I still don't like it, but I never have.

5) When online works, the game is okay. It's super fast, twitchy and the guns all feel "samey", it's more rock paper scissors and online connection speed than my gun is stronger than yours (not including shotguns/snipers). Killstreaks have been dialed way back, so that's a plus or minus depending on your take. I'm just getting into league play, but it's interesting for people that enjoy playing right and work as a team. The perks and unlocks have been changed, but it's still the same fomula. Perform missions, get kills, get XP and unlock things; it's in a new wrapper though.

All in all, it's a CoD game. It's not the worst game ever and even though there are bugs on release, the campaign is super high quality, zombie mode is terrific and with the addtion of league play, online could have some legs for people like me that would rather play with a team that works together instead of a bunch of boosters and corner campers.

PS3 Version:

By now we all know that new CODs are the same thing with different weapons and different maps, give or take. NOT this one. The multi-player feels VERY similar to that of Battlefield, only a generic version of it. And you could definitely tell. The pistols are currently overpowered and occasionally, there tends to be small glitches when you die where you'll go through a wall and down to who knows where.

BIGGEST ISSUE OF ALL IS THE FREEZING.

I NEVER had an issue with my Ps3 freezing, now if I try to view my combat record, change an emblem, open a class, or do something new that required a bit of loading, my entire PS3 just freezes. It is not just me, you can hear many people complain about it throughout the server. FURTHERMORE, the server gets stuck with "Need more players to balance team" even with a full lobby. Sometimes, it'll work when someone gets frustrated and leaves.

If you're considering buying this, don't. Not until Treyarch fixes these issues.

If someone from Treyarch is reading this, know that you FAILED big time here. Honestly I feel like we deserve an apology for your team not fixing these issues before releasing them. I will admit that I will continue to play it simply cause my dumb self already put out the $60 bucks for this game. Thanks for nothing Treyarch!

11/20/2012 UPDATE

It has been a couple of days since my previous review. I force myself to play it because I want to like this game, considering I put out the $60. I sit, TRYING to like it, but I can't.

1) THE FREEZING STILL CONTINUES. It is hard to enjoy a game that freezes randomly in a menu. You get stuck anywhere from 5-10 minutes as the PS3 restores and does an error check. Yay!

2) If you make it to actual gameplay (as it loves to randomly freeze before the loading bar is full) you will find yourself annoyed by the amount of times you will be spawned in front of an enemy. Spawn camping is pretty easy to do on here, considering the huge amount of windows and high ground available. In one game, I was literally spawned about a meter away from a bouncing betty, and killed within seconds of spawning.

3) The shotgun is an amazing gun in this game. My favorite actually. However, occasionally, I find myself having to shot a person 3 times, point blank, to get a kill. Not quite sure how a point blank hit, dead center, with a shotgun, doesn't get you an immediate kill. I'm fairly confident on my accuracy, so I highly doubt it's an accuracy issue.

4) There is also this weird thing that I can't quite figure out. Sometimes while trying to join a friend's party, it says something about them needing to restart their playlists in order for you to join because your playlist is newer than theirs. On a couple of occasions I wasn't able to join parties because of this. I'm still trying to figure this out, but in the meantime, I'd like to point out that this shouldn't have been an issue in the first place.

5) They closed down the Nuketown lobby. That sucks. I was expecting that to be a perk of pre-ordering the game. Guess not.

2/22/13

I went back to play this game after a while without playing it and they seem to have fixed the freezing! Yippee!! Now, why do I leave it as a rating of 1 star then?! I'll feed you baby birds! The game still freezes on Zombies. There is nothing more annoying than having your console freeze while being chased by a pack of zombies on level 31. Trust me, it will piss you off like never before. Doesn't happen always, but has happened enough times to be a burden. For those of you about to tell me it is my slow internet, I'm running on 65 Mbps. It isn't the fastest, but it is good enough to not be a problem.

There are a lot of things to like about this game, but the negatives outweigh the positives. Let's start with the positives: the score-streak setup they implement in this game is awesome. In addition to getting kills, you are rewarded for playing the objective and being a team player. I am also glad to see that the support strike package from MW3 and death-streaks are NOT in this game, so no more free stealth bombers and EMPs, and no more last/final stand, second chance, or dead man's hand. The way they have divided up the perks is superb as well, with no single perk being overpowered. Similar to the perks in this game, you will find that the guns are well-balanced also.

Unfortunately, even with these great features, the online multiplayer experience can be horrible at times. The lag compensation and hit detection in this game are worse than any of the three previous Call of Duty games (MW2, Black Ops 1, and MW3). It can be extremely frustrating to lose a gunfight to someone when, on your screen, you clearly should have come out on top. They have also taken away the ability to tie score-streaks to your custom classes, so if you find yourself struggling to win a gunfight due to lag or any other reason, you are stuck with the 3 score-streaks you chose and cannot switch to lower ones during a match. In addition to having horrible lag compensation and hit detection, the developers have implemented skill-based matchmaking, so even though the game has connection issues, players are not always placed in lobbies with the best ping. Often, players will be placed in games with worse connections in order to go up against players of similar skill level.

TL;DR: the connection issues in this game have absolutely ruined it. Though they have implemented some nice new features, the online multiplayer experience can be utterly frustrating.

Want Call of Duty: Black Ops II Discount?

I had hoped that after all lag issues we experienced in MW3 that this game would be the redeemer. Sadly it wasn't.

The online experience is horrid to say the least. The # 1 thing online games want is an equal playing ground. You get to compete against players who are better and worse than you and you improve accordingly. Skill seems to have very little to do with this game. Lag has killed the competitive element. All you need to do is watch the kill cam and you can easily see why you got out gunned. Players can be a full second or more ahead of you and what you are seeing in real time on your screen is not not real time at all. This is the last COD title I buy until they spend the money on dedicated servers. God knows these guys can afford it yet they refuse to fix their games. The instead tell their customers it their fault for having fast Internet. The other elements of the game are good it's just the lag that ruins the experience for me.

I assume we're going to see a lot of negativity with the nickle-and-dime approach this game has taken so let's knock this out of the way right now.

1) You will have to buy companion characters to play couch co-op in the themed levels, but the toy box can take any combos.

2) I've seen at least one area in the cars playset that can't be unlocked without buying all 4 available cars figures, so there are probably more of these areas.

Bottom line: Its going to take an investment to get the most out of this game just to warn you.

Now that's out of the way the game is pretty fun. The starter pack comes with Jack Sparrow, Sully, and Mr. Incredible all with their respective levels. The individual worlds are nicely detailed and fun to explore with a lot of vertical space to transverse. The missions in the levels rely on the "fetch quest" type a bit too much for my tastes, but younger kids should have no trouble jumping right in.

The toy box is the main draw. You start out with a pre-made world that you can change to your hearts content. Create racing games, battle, build your own castle. There is a system in place where you get tokens where you can buy more pieces to build with. The main problem here is its a gambling type unlock. Each token gives you one spin and the chances you'll get what you want aren't great without banking tons of spin tokens.

The buidling itself is very easy. I found it more intuitive than LBP. Its very similar to create-a-park in the old Tony Hawk games. Essentially pick you pieces ans drop them in place.

I'm having a lot of fun with the game and my daughter, who is still a little too young to play, loves to watch the game. She recognizes her favorite characters and yells at them as they pop up on screen.

The only other big thing pulling the score down is the game is having some trouble running. My character randomly becomes unresponsive. At first I thought moving the characters from the disc was causing this, but it turned out to be the game servers. If you're having this issue the disable your internet connection, and that should correct the problem.

When my wife and I got this game we heard about a glitch associated with update 1.01 so we purposefully did not update the game. The game plays great straight from the disc (with no updates at all). It runs smoothly and is very fun. As of the time of this review the developer has released update 1.03. After installing update 1.03 the game still runs great and all the features are there. This game is easy as it is geared towards kids but it is very fun. My wife and I enjoy co-op games and this is our new favorite! Before our favorite was all of the Lego games (Lego Star Wars, etc). While the lego games are fun, they always feel more like mini games than actually AAA games. Disney Infinity feels like a real game, an easy game, but a real game. Plus the toys are really cool and fun to display on our shelf while not playing the game. I give this game Five out of Five stars and a 9/10 since it is (understandably) easy.

This game is so fun! There are so many different options and building in the toy box is a lot of fun once you get the hang of it.

Also Disney must have fixed the patch thing cause I was having an issue at first, but now everything seems to be working great. Totally recomend for kids and adults lots of fun and creativity.

This review is based on a week and half of game play.

Graphics:

All in all the game has fairly nice graphics. There is some frame rate stuttering, some rough edges, and for some reason when people talk I have a 50 to 80 percent chance of their picture being blurry. Despite these flaws, the worlds are bright, colorful, and feel like the films they represent. While I'm a bit annoyed by the random spots of poor quality, the over all feel is appealing.

Music:

Most of the pieces used are from the Play Sets' respective movies. Most of the choices I like. While I haven't heard anything that knocked my socks off, I've yet to mute the TV in annoyance.

Game Play:

o Some parts are very fun, some parts are okay, some parts bore me silly, and some parts frustrate the living daylights out of me. A part of me wonders who tested the game as there are still a lot of glitches and not quite polished spots. I think the finance and or marketing guys pushed this game out before the developers were ready. Despite the flaws I'm still having fun, but I would have rather waited a couple months for the game to come out if it gave me a better experience.

o Most of your time is spent fighting, fetching, exploring, and getting frustrated at glitches and controls. Almost every character has a 'up close' attack when you use the triangle button. The R2 button is typically for long distance weapons. You can collect money to purchase packs and weapons form the toy store to change your characters abilities.

o You can't really die. You simply respawn on the spot or not to far from where you were.

o Boss battles are a nightmare. It seems like I can't make it through the battle without some glitch or freezing. If you mess up in a boss battles and die/fall/get eaten by a large squid then you have to start the battle over. When you're starting over from glitches rather than your own error it stings.

o Your enemies have better aim than you and dodging doesn't always work.

o The camera kind of works. Some times it's great and sometimes it's not.

o You walk very slowly when you carry things which can be annoying as you'll have a lot of fetching missions. You can combat this by using a vehicle/animal to travel...why walk with a golden skunk when you can ride on a horse with a golden skunk?

o You can walk, run, ride, drive, sneak, hoverboard, bike, slide, and fly.

o There is a fair amount of platforming. Most of it is very simple. I love the vertical aspect; climbing buildings, platforming sections, and flying. It doesn't feel like you're stuck in one long twisting hallway which is a nice change from a lot of the games I play. Why can't I swim though? Water is instant death unless it's just a small creek.

Co-Op:

I'd would jump on the bandwagon and complain that out of the box you can't play co-op in any of the Play Sets... but I'm happier being able to play three different worlds out of the box than one world with two people. Imagine if MU was the only world you got from the start. Would you buy more based on that world alone? I wouldn't have. That said I ordered more characters the next day so I could play with friends and my niece and nephew. I have all the available characters and Play Sets now and I don't regret it. J (My pocketbook does though. Thank goodness I'm typically frugal.)

Play Sets:

o Monsters Inc is cute, but super glitchy. I've been stuck in walls and I've had to abort missions or reboot as the game won't register them as complete even though they are. I've been locked in the tunnels twice as the gates relocked for some reason and sometimes the walls that you jump back and forth between to get to a higher platform don't register my character jumping on them at all. I HATE the bike. If I could master Cool Borders when I was 8 then why can't I control a bike in this game 20 years later? (Yup. 28 year old gamer. Nurture your inner child.) MU has no killing of any sort; just paintballs, gags, and toilet paper. I finished the storyline missions last night and I still have several bike/paintball challenges left. If the world wasn't so buggy, it would have been fun. Playing pranks is a nice change from stomping bad guys.

o The Pirates world is awesome. I love it to pieces. The only negative in my opinion is how slow your ship or dinghy seems to travel. The playing area feels huge once you get your ship. I wish you could climb some of the vines. I applaud their attempt at a puzzle with the spinning statue totem. (I've yet to find a puzzle in the other Play Sets.) I do think they are underestimating kids. If children can figure out Zelda dungeons, they can handle something more complicated than that totem. It did take forever to get bombs so you clear away rubble, but then you had a reason to revisit the islands.

o The Incredibles world is a toss up for me. The number of enemy encounters is too high. My exploring was constantly being interrupted. I love the skyscrapers and the all the vehicles; even the hoverboard that refused to work until I rebooted the game twice. Once you get the helicopter though, their world feels pretty small. The townspeople...look stupid. (Like squiggles and legos combined) I know some of you will think they are cute, but to me they just seem blah. I don't think they fit in the world. What saves the Incredibles world for me is the playable characters. Their various powers are FUN. I liked to use Violet for exploring as she could turn invisible and be ignored by the enemies. I liked being Dash as he could zoom around town and into enemies without a vehicle. I was so sad he couldn't run on water. I really wanted that as it's one of my favorite parts in the movie. I loved fighting as Helen as she kicked butt and looked great doing it. Mr. Incredible and Syndrome were just okay. (Warning: All of the Incredibles characters need to be trained at the HQ before you can use all of their abilities.)

o I don't care for the Cars Play Set as I'm not a big fan of driving/racing games and that world is basically non-stop driving, but my nephew loves it. I have to admit, there is something fun about plowing though haystacks and tipping tractors.

o The Lone Ranger Play Set is my favorite after Pirates of the Caribbean. You can ride a ghost horse, use a canon on a train, and turn into a crow... raven...a bird with black feathers...whatever. The town is set up with props to make your bullets ricochet which looks pretty cool as multiple things explode. The characters' quips amuse me. The shooting missions bored me to tears. Maybe it's simple the fact that my aim sucks, but I spent forever on that train trying to hit all the targets.

Toy Box: (I have not spent much time working with this aspect yet.)

Oh the potential, oh the frustration. The tools feel a bit clunky and the way the camera zooms out automatically makes it so I can't tell what my customizing choices look like while I'm making them. I suspect this system will feel more natural over time as I work with it. I managed to build a fairly good pirate house in a matter of minutes without too much effort though. I'm looking forward to making an entire town. Like many people have stated, you need to clock in some major Play Set time on multiple Play Sets to have a decent number of objects to build with. Each Play Set world holds several dozen to a hundred capsules (I never counted); each one containing a new item or sparks. You can collect spins to get even more items. The random spinner is ANNOYING. Even if you save up spins and you might get 1 item you wanted out of 16. Bluck.

Challenges:

What? They could only think of four different challenges to reproduce over and over in every Play Set? Really? Racing, balloon collecting, shooting, and fighting. That's it. The novelty wears off fast. Some challenges you'll beat so easily that you wonder why they bothered, and others are so hard you wonder if it's even possible to win. I curse my completionist tendencies as I don't find the majority of these to be much fun.

Toy Box Challenges:

Too many racing ones! (Non-racer opinion admittedly.) That aside, why couldn't some of the Play Set challenges offer something like the scavenger hunt, sling shot launching, or sumo? At least those are different.

Power Discs:

I loath the way you buy them. I already have three Cinderella Cars. One came with the game and I got the Toys R Us deal where you buy one pack and get one free. There was a Cinderella Car in each pack. I just wish you could buy what you wanted to buy of them and nothing else.

Going Forward:

Will I get more Play Sets or characters as they're released? Yes. I've had fun so far. That's the point of video games; to have fun.

Power Discs? No. The duplication issue annoys me too much.

Want DISNEY INFINITY Starter Pack PS3 Discount?

Disney Interactive finally hit the nail on the head with an actually good game. This game may not be for everyone, but once you realize what the game offers and what it's trying to do, then it's a game that is well worth the time and effort to play. Despite the fact that this game could cost quite a bit of money, the game itself is a lot of fun and the starter pack comes packed with content and is worth the price tag.

The starter pack comes with everything necessary to play the game. Some may say that in order to "collect everything" that they'll have to pay an arm and a leg. I would say that that is completely true; however you don't need to "collect everything" in order to play and have fun with the game. The starter pack comes with enough content that it makes me feel like I made out with a deal. Most games nowadays come out with a 59.99 + tax price tag. For about 15 dollars more you get 3 collectible figures and a power disc (which translate to something in-game) along with a fully featured game.

I am having a blast playing this game knowing full well that I don't have to buy anything more to continue playing. I will probably buy a few more of my favorite figures but not because I "have" to buy them to play, but because I enjoy those characters and want to collect them. My favorite part of the game is definitely the Toy Box. The play-sets are fun once you realize it's not for hardcore gamers and it's a lighthearted story driven adventure. The Toy Box is where I really get to let my creative juices flow and allows me to bring to life some of my ideas. I spend quite a bit of time in Toy Box just placing trees to decorate my scene! The Toy Box is definitely the addicting-i-will-play-for-another-30-minutes-oh-crap-its-3-am part of the game.

I've shopped at Amazon for many years; I've never written a review. In fear that many would pass up this gem in favor of bigger budget, more highly publicized titles, I've decided to break that record.

If you're an "old school" gamer like myself, you may remember the Spec Ops series as (mostly) buggy and nearly unplayable budget titles dating back to the late nineties. Yager and 2K Games have changed all of that, and oh, it's sooooo for the better.

Spec Ops: The Line stars off with all of the ingredients of many third person shooters. There's a generous helping of rock music on the soundtrack, a sprinkling of one liners, etc. By now (if you play many action games) I'm sure you can recite the cliches in your sleep. Then the flavor starts to change. Spec Ops has been touted from the beginning as a story focused game. Yeah, yeah; I'd heard the same thing about Homefront. There's where the comparisons end; Spec Ops has an amazing story (which ends up being the main draw of the game).

STORY:

If you've seen the trailers, you know that Delta Force Captain Martin Walker (voiced by the always amazing Nolan North) and his squad (Lugo and Adams) are sent into a Dubai ravaged by sandstorms in order to recon the failed evacuation of the city (carried about by one U.S. Military Colonel John Konrad). What follows are a series of twists and turns that display all of the confusion, depravity, and destruction of war. You as the player even get to participate by making decisions; Who will you save, and who will you let die? But there's no morality meter here. KOTOR this is not. You'll quickly see that most decisions have negative outcomes, and instead of getting some alignment specific piece of gear for your choices, you're treated to something much more real: Walker and his squad actually react to those decisions. This is the brilliant part of the writing; you as the player are made to think about the abstract forces behind those decisions. You try to determine if an action is still evil if it could potentially save people. Would you sacrifice a civilian to save a critical resource that could potentially save more lives? What makes a person responsible for an action? How far would you go to be safe? Do you feel like a hero yet? All the way to one of the games four endings (multiple endings in an action game!) you'll see the characters grow, and struggle, and change. I don't want to spoil anything, but I will say that rarely does any art medium delve into such disturbing territory (and it is very disturbing at times) so successfully. It out-Conrads Conrad. Non of this would work if not for the presentation of it all; thankfully the pacing and detail of the experience are both stellar. Remember that rock music and those one liners? Those are soon gone, replaced by an atmospheric soundtrack and meaningful dialogue between characters. There are no throwaway lines; everything has purpose. Not only do the character models change to reflect battle damage as you progress, but the way the squad calls out enemies or responds to orders changes too (not to mention the change in the loading screen tips later on: "How many Americans have you killed today?"). They act like real people and not stock characters. I forgot I was playing a game in my living room. In short: Amazing.

Graphics:

This is the Unreal 3 engine, so expect texture pop in. Particle effects are also lacking. Everything else looks great; the character models are very detailed, and the environments look great. Speaking of the locations, there are a wide variety of environments to fight through. The outdoor wasteland (complete with great looking sand...no, seriously) looks bleak while the insides of hotels, malls, etc. are plucked right from the streets of Dubai. They're tacky in an opulent way (and very shiny). The refugee areas are unsettling while looking lived in. The weapon models aren't too shabby either.

Sound:

The experience could have fallen flat so easily if the acting would have done the same. It doesn't. Every actor captures each line note perfect with Nolan North doing a standout job. Is there anything this guy can't do? The soundtrack is suitably creepy or adrenaline pumping as needs be. It works well. The sound effects also get the job done, and it's nice to see even small bits of environmental detail provided with a sound effect in order to draw the player into the experience.

Gameplay:

This is a cover based third person shooter; it doesn't do anything revolutionary. Having said that, it is more than serviceable and very fun. You have a large arsenal of weapons and grenades available, a dedicated melee button, and the rest of the bells and whistles of the genre. Ammo is scarce though which enhances the experience. Oh, and the execution animations for downed enemies are brutal. You can also give limited orders to your squad (shoot this enemy, heal your mate, and/or throw a flash bang). It helps out during tough firefights (and there are several), but keep in mind this isn't a squad centered realistic shooter like Rainbow Six or SWAT. The multiplayer is average and pretty by the numbers in terms of modes.

This game was worth a sixty dollar purchase to this reviewer if only because it does something most games do not: it provides a detailed story unafraid to go to those dark places we all try to ignore. It is more than a novelty; it makes you think about what really matters and how we even know if it matters. Luckily, there's a fun third person shooter to experience along the way. The horror; the horror. (Couldn't resist)

Spec Ops the Line on the surface appears to be like your typical cover based third person shooter. The main characters of this story like many in this genre are an elite group of soldiers. The player takes on the role of Captain Martin Walker the leader of a three man Delta Force team made up of 1st Lieutenant Alphanso Adams (a heavy gunner) and Staff Sergeant John Lugo (a marksman and translator whose fluent in six languages).

The three are sent on a reconnaissance mission in the United Arab Emirates specifically to the city of Dubai which was devastated 6 months prior by a sandstorm. The objective on the surface is familiar territory for anyone who's ever played a third person shooter. The three man delta team is sent into a foreign country to locate survivors, deal with insurgents, and to find out the fate of the 33rd Battalion of the United States army which went missing while evacuating the city of Dubai.

To achieve these goals the player will be able to engage in standard cover based third person shooter game mechanics. This means that the player will be able to use high tech weapons and vehicles. The player will also be able to use team based strategies to overcome enemies and a cover system to safely advance forward in situations where there's heavy fire.

There are some very important things that set this game apart from others in its genre. The first one I'll discuss is this game's unconventional take on war. War in most third person shooters is treated as something fun, manly, and entertaining. Also the enemies aren't portrayed as much more than an effective way to test out different types of guns, knives, and bombs. This consistent static portrayal of enemies makes it easy to go through countless games in this genre without a second thought about torturing/killing enemies. This is not the case in spec ops. War is portrayed in a much more realistic and mature manner especially since the enemy is no longer a bunch of unimportant goons. In this game the enemy is portrayed as other human beings with thoughts, feelings, loved ones, whose life also has value.

Another thing that sets this game apart from other third person shooters is the gripping storyline. It is filled with enough twists, turns, and moral dilemmas to keep even the most jaded gamer interested from the beginning to the end. Nothing is as simple as it first appears to be. In fact this story and the way it is presented is so effective you will have no choice but to turn on your brain and emotions and question if what you're doing is really the right thing or the wrong thing to do as you realize your actions as the leader has far reaching consequences for your character, his team, and the people around them. This deep-emotional storytelling also makes it possible for this game to have 4 possible endings.

Also this game effectively uses weather and the terrain to provide both obstacles and a new way to engage enemies which adds a lot of flavor to the combat.

I highly recommend this game. It is a breath of fresh air in an over-crowded genre that's becoming increasingly generic. This game is also visually stunning, with exceptional voice acting, and sound. It is definitely worth the money and the effort to play the game from the beginning to the end.

I have been waiting for this game for a long time.

Pros:

I really liked the setting in Dubai. The randomness of the sandstorms and the ability to use sand as a weapon make the combat very enjoyable.

The story of this game is one of the best I have played in a long time.Everything you do effects the game and your AI squad. There is no right or wrong in this game. The creepy DJ was a great part of the game as was the intel found throughout the levels of the game. This game really does portray the horrors of war and the human suffering. There are many twist to this game. That motivated me to play until I finished the game.

Music was great in this game some old some new. Most of the songs really got me into the level I was playing.

Voice acting was top notch with Nolan North great as always.I liked that one had to conserve ammo in Dubai.

Not to worry there is plenty to pick up from defeated enemies.I liked doing executions on enemies in hand to hand combat.I really liked when you threw a grenade it would make a dust cloud to blind enemies.

Cons:

Graphics were very dated but good.Frame rates were smooth and no glitches.

The backgrounds were done well and looked great. But enemies all looked the same and not much detail in them.

The cut scene graphics looked good.

AI could have been better.Don't get me wrong one had to take cover or else.Enemies had the habit of running in the open. And squad mates would do the same at times.

Sound was ok,the music sounded great but sometimes the voice acting was very faint.I had to turn up the TV to hear stuff. Then turn it down for combat.Explosions were very dull. The cover system was spotty my advice go into cover on your own.It took me 12 hrs to beat the game on hard the campaign could have been longer IMHO.

Online:I have very poor service in my area so I could not play online.

Overall/Final thoughts

Even with dated graphics and spotty sound this is a good solid 3rd person shooter with a great soundtrack.

It is worth getting this game for the story and multiple endings. With hidden intel items and the choices you have to make. This game has a High replay value for me.

Even with the short campaign it was a intense experience for me.It was nice to see a game show how in war there is a fine line and a breaking point in all people. How a split second choice can effect you and others.

As a Iraq combat Vet I know how that feels.

I recommend this game highly for the story and action. It has it's faults but was worth it to me.

If you don't want to spend the money rent it or buy it used.I think all gamers will enjoy this game.

And learn what the mental toll can be on a Soldier.

Final grade 4 stars.

Make no mistake, you are not the hero of this game. You'll start out feeling that way, but by the end of the game you're thinking that all of those people would have been better off if you'd never arrived. It's like the way you felt in Shadow of the Colossus, when you realised what a jerk you were for killing all of those previously-peaceful creatures.

The game does have a few control issues and can get frustrating in some battles, but it is standard 3rd-person shooter gameplay. The difference here is the environment, story and tone. It also has 4 possible endings, determined by what you do in the final minutes. You can try for the other 3 endings quickly via the chapter-select menu after completing the game once, there's no need to play the entire game multiple times to see them. For the price it's currently being offered for, this is a worthwhile purchase.

Great game they really have a great story. I have been really disappointed it modern war games campaign but spec ops the line has a better campaign then its multiplayer. I think multiplayer will improve over time. I love what Yager and 2k are doing as far as s free dlc pack in August to me that shows they really care and want there fans to be happy with the game. To me the game is a great game the multiplayer could use some work. I would pay 60 bucks for this again.

I own two PS3 vertical stands. One is the official Sony stand which, despite being made of plastic, is 20 bucks. The second one I own is this stand. It is virtually a carbon copy and only clocks in at about 7 bucks. Cosmetically you can't tell the difference once the system has been placed atop it. The only differences I could find are two. First, the base says PS3 but the has been flipped. Since this will face the surface you're setting the product on, who cares. Second, it's got a different locking mechanism. This is where the official Sony stand kicks butt. The real deal won't come off. You can pick up your system and the stand will come with you. This copied version, not so much. If you pick up your system it will more than likely leave the vertical stand behind. It does do a great job, though, keeping your unit in place. You can try to shake the thing back and forth and it won't let go of your slim. Joy! Long story short, if you don't plan on picking up your PS3 on a regular basis (and it's probably better for your system if you do not, anyway), this purchase is a great alternative to Sony's overpriced version.

This gives you a bit more protection from your PS3 Slim falling over, however you could still easily knock it over even with this attached. For the price and for the added stability its worth it, however don't expect it to protect it from falling over with anything more than a slight bump.

This is a great, simple little base that let's the PS3 stand up on its side, giving you a lot more shelf space, and making the PS3 look cooler to boot. When the PS3 is set up, it doesn't wobble or shake, but the base is still not very wide, so if it is in a high-traffic area or you have kids, it might be prone to tipping. But it you have this on a shelf or a TV cabinet, it should be perfectly fine.

This game works quite well. Lots of levels are spent inside hallways of schools, hospitals, office buildings, and other such cramped locations. Sounds fine, but I found myself longing for some open space to play in. When you finally make it outside and you actually breathe a sigh of relief, I'd consider that to be a sign of a pretty good game.

This game is not one to play in a crowded room, or anywhere where there are lights on. Wait till it's dark and crank it up. While not as scary as Dead Space, I certainly had a few jumps during the playthrough of this one. Creepy scenery, eerie circumstances, sweet weapons, cool enemies, and an interesting story make this a blast to play.

At the time of this writing, I've still not played any multiplayer, so I can't comment on that. But the singleplayer is great fun.

All details aside though, this is pretty standard fare for an FPS. First-person perspective shooting. Lots of weapons and lots of enemies. Linear in structure. PSN Trophies that take quite a while if you want to get a platinum in everything.

For such a reasonable price, and even if you haven't played the first F.E.A.R., this is a quality purchase that is worth at _least_ one playthrough.

I was expecting more from Alma and I got more then I wished for. Awsome title to have in your PS3 library and well worth the wait. I recommend this to anybody who played FEAR at all. Don't worry the PS3 of the first FEAR was a let down but if you played it for the PC then get this one. If not get it as a rental if you question it. Trust me won't be let down.

Buy F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin Now

So FEAR 2 is a sequel. But, you do not need to play the original to enjoy this game.

The story of FEAR 2 is dovetailed into the ending of FEAR 1. The opening level is rocked by a large explosion that marked the conclusion of FEAR 1. This is a nice touch. It ties the second game into the first one without beating you over the head with it.

You play Sgt. Beckett. A generic military soldier type of hero who's back story is largely forgettable. Your squad mates are equally a "cut and paste" kind of group. You are tasked with arresting a CEO of an evil corporation bent on bringing clone troopers to a military near you. The operation goes south when the explosion, I mentioned earlier, interrupts you. Oh, and those clone troopers are lead by psychic commanders that have a tendency to go psycho. This is due to their mother being locked in a dark room when she was a kid and suffered all kinds of physical and mental abuses at the hands of her father who turned her into a supernatural force to be reckoned with. And when the evil company tried to pull the plug on the whole operation, Alma (the aforementioned girl) breaks out to exact her revenge on the world.

This back story is the set up for FEAR 2. The game takes a little bit of time to get going. But, once it does, I found it interesting enough to see it through to the end. I like the "horror" elements the designers worked into the story. Seeing fleeting glimpses of a ghostly Alma walking across your vision can raise the hairs on the back of your neck. Speaking of Alma... The story never explains why Alma is a child in the first game and a woman in the sequel. I mean the sequel happens immediately after the first game, so why is she so much older? Kind of a major hole in the back story. But, I'm not going to lose any sleep over this.

As the story plays out, you encounter ghosts and flesh eating ghouls. The ghosts are not really enemies but the restless souls of the victims of Alma's rage or the explosion at the beginning of the story. The ghouls are rejects of the clone trooper program. Nice touches to the storyline. And to be sure you do not miss this, there are various documents littering the ground to give you little nuggets of information about the story. All of this doesn't save FEAR 2 from all the usual short fallings of the FPS genre.

The single player campaign is woefully short. And the multiplayer half is more of an afterthought. The graphics look a bit dated. I mean FEAR 2 looks like a FPS from around 2001 running on a high end PC. Complete with all the bump mapping and pixelization you would expect from a game from that year. This dated look pulls down the entire presentation. Plus, you are bound to get nauseated from the overly exaggerated bobbing back and forth motion of your character's head when he walks. I wish there was some way of turning this off.

The vehicle sequences are sorely lacking as well. Mostly due to you piloting a mech that is capable of raining down death on the multiple waves of enemies. It is a little pedestrian of a plot device to stretch out the story.

Some of the more specialized weapons of the game give you little reason to use them once you realize how useful your ability to slow down time really is. It is that "bullet time ability" that helps you survive against overwhelming odds. And some of those specialized weapons just are not fun to use in bullet time. Plus, ammo for these weapons is very limited.

In the end, FEAR 2 is a worthwhile rental at best. I enjoyed it as such. I doubt many people would find it worth $60. The story is what carries the game. Not the graphics or the depth of game play. There are so many better FPS titles available on the Playstation 3 (like Killzone 2 or Call of Duty 4) that are worth your time.

I prefer to rate games on a scale of 10. So FEAR 2 earns a 7.5 out of 10 in my book.

Read Best Reviews of F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin Here

F.E.A.R. 2 is an exceptionally solid, atmospheric shooter that delivers real top notch action as well as some surprisingly genuine scares. There is a very convoluted story here that you may never quite grasp, but in the midst of this is a very good single-player campaign that lasts upwards of 10 hours and remains incredibly tense and thrilling from start to finish.

The F.E.A.R. series is sadly one of the more underrated series of games this console generation, which is unfortunate because it really shouldn't be. The games in this series deliver very intense shooting action against AI that is significantly more intelligent than the other FPSs it competes with, and F.E.A.R 2 is no different. The ability to carry 4 weapons and 4 grenade types keeps the combat very fresh and varied. Enemy types aren't the most varied, but their tactical intelligence always keeps you on your toes and forces you to think strategically. Certain segments of game allow you take control of a brutally powerful mech that decimates your enemies with chain guns and missiles. Overall, the gameplay mechanics are quite solid and the game really delivers in its action, making for a really enjoyable experience the whole way through.

Where this game really stands out is in its spooky atmosphere. Taking strong influence from supernatural Japanese horror films and mythology, you'll find that this is a game best played in the dark with your surround sound turned up. Ghostly apparitions, ghastly images, and creepy sound effects come at you at a perfect pace that is never under or overwhelming, particularly during sections in between major combat action. This is a stand out feature for the game, and one that really differentiates it from other games in the genre. It is not a game for those who are easily startled, but those who also enjoy a good scare, the blend of horror and intense combat make for a very satisfying experience.

The game isn't perfect. From a presentation perspective, it isn't quite on the level of other FPSs circa 2009 such as Resistance 2 or Modern Warfare 2. The graphics are suitable but won't blow your mind. The characters you come across can seem wooden and unmemorable, much of this having to do with the aforementioned convoluted narrative. But these are minor pickings in what is an otherwise very good game that stands apart from the pack with its well-paced, intense combat and its spooky atmosphere. It's a very good bargain at the price it's at now, and should definitely scratch the itch for gamers looking for a solid and very enjoyable shooter with a nice touch of creepiness.

I can be a hard judge of Video Games and that is a fact! But have no Fear, I found F.E.A.R. 2: Origin to be the most awesome video game, I have successfully completed. I have cerebral palsy, among other disabilities so playing video games is difficult for me. F.E.A.R. 2: Origin set on Easy Mode was still quite the hand full for me to play. However F.E.A.R. 2: Origin had none of those extremely challenging hurdles or mini games tucked inside that made it impossible to finish. Not to say F.E.A.R. 2: Origin was not challenging because; it was indeed the most challenging video game I have ever played. F.E.A.R. 2: Origin was intelligently designed so it did more to challenge your senses. F.E.A.R. 2: Origin never got old or boring either. Using the Mech's to lay waste to the enemy was an awesome experience. Mech's are very powerful robots driven by humans that can wage destruction on a massive scale. Because the Mech's regenerated their abilities during times they were not fired on was an awesome touch that let me figure out unique awesome ways to win that were compatible with my brain and limited physical abilities. The weapons in F.E.A.R. 2: Origin were a lot of fun to use. The enemies died in so many unique ways with lots of blood spatter and gore thrown in. F.E.A.R. 2: Origin was a real festival of blood and gore if you had the gore option engaged. Of course if you want your enemy to die a less gore filled bloody death you have the option to turn Gore \ Realism feature Off in the games control center.

F.E.A.R. 2: Origin is not just another shoot em' up gore fest, F.E.A.R. 2: Origin was a LOT of fun but it was also different in so many interesting ways. I wished Snake Fist hadn't gotten killed because; I liked him he was a true scruffy geek \ nerd like me minus the disabilities of course. The locales where the action takes place looked so real down to the signs in the buildings especially the school scenes. That school cafeteria was so real I could almost smell the over salted fat rich unhealthy rubbery food they serve students. I am trying hard to find one bad thing to say about F.E.A.R. 2: Origin and nothing huge comes to mind. The graphics were awesome. The sound was first rate not as good as the original Bioshock BUT still awesome. The audio set a creepy or frantic mood well whenever needed. The city scenes and subway interior scenes were equally well done. The unusual thing about F.E.A.R. 2: Origin was the attention to detail and the overall quality and attention to detail that was invested in every interior shot. F.E.A.R. 2: Origin had a fair share of destructible objects sprawled throughout the game. Nothing destroys the mood set by a video game more than an object easily destroyed in the real world that is impossible to destroy in the game.

F.E.A.R. 2: Origin also had some funny dialogue for the enemies as they got ready to kill you. I laughed my head off when an enemy would say, I've got him just the instant before I blew his head off. I loved it when a frustrated enemy would say he is moving too fast, or I need back up here. The timing of some of the enemies lines is pure comic genius. You have to be deep into the game to really enjoy the enemies funny one liners and assorted quips, I have heard some people say the character in F.E.A.R. 2: Origin has some pretty lame friends given that whenever the going gets rough they fade out. However I enjoy being a LONE WOLF when hunting things on video games. The most infuriating video games are those that pair you up with an inept but affable side kick you must continually get out of jams not of your own making. I know F.E.A.R. 2: Origin was a good video game because even on Easy Mode I died a lot in some places and not at all in areas where I am stronger like sniping. Despite lacklustre performance in other areas of video game play rare is the video game with good snipping guns that I do not get the expert trophy. F.E.A.R. 2: Origin's sharp shooter trophy is called "DEAD EYE" and Yeah I won it. Gun aiming in F.E.A.R. 2: Origin is so much better in F.E.A.R. 2: Origin compared to the truly stupid sideways reticle only gun aiming in the original F.E.A.R. Button layout was much improved in F.E.A.R. 2: Origin although some minor additional fine tuning to make some things flow better is needed.

The best thing about F.E.A.R. 2: Origin is the ability to slow down time as it was needed, worked everywhere and added so much to the funny situations it created during game play. The only gripe I had about F.E.A.R. 2: Origin and it is a tiny almost non-existent gripe is about the targeting system. In the heat of battle the target would be clearly in view and locked on, I'd fire my weapon hit the enemy and he would not die, spurt blood or in any way act as if he had been hit. I loved how you had to use the time slo feature just right to catch enemies at critical times of exposure. The best thing about F.E.A.R. 2: Origin was the AI control of the characters being the most realistic I have witnessed. The Replica soldiers were worthy prey because you truly had to hunt them down and kill them like the hell spawned vermin they were. Replica soldiers of all kinds never went quietly into that good night without my having to blow their brains all over the wall first. I only wish I could give more than five stars for fun and overall to F.E.A.R. 2: Origin because they were earned. It is a rare video game that I get this fervent about but F.E.A.R. 2: Origin is that rare fun that kept me engaged in the game like a true fiend like addict. I consider F.E.A.R. 2: Origin one of the must haves of any video game collection. I will be buying more copies of F.E.A.R. 2: Origin just because; I never want to be without the video games I enjoy so much they become addictive to me. Oh I will be replaying F.E.A.R. 2: Origin again and again as it never gets old for me. Treat yourself to F.E.A.R. 2: Origin by buying a copy. I love F.E.A.R. 2: Origin more than double recess and playing in water!

A little family history on the DOA franchise. My father and I first played DOA on the PSone. I was looking for a fighting game since I normally play RPG and racing games. When we played DOA, it was love at first sight. Ever since then, we bought game systems just to play versions of DOA. The only one we didn't have was DOA 4, since we bought PS3 for the bluray, but even then, we were contemplating on getting the Xbox 360, yet were fortunate to get a copy of DOA4 from a friend, just to collect. My father passed away 2 years ago, so he never played Dimensions and DOA 5. In his honor, I bought a 3DS just for DOA:D.

Now, after 7 years, DOA is back in full force. I've gotten to play other fighting games since then, and ended up loving the SoulCalibur series as an alternative, but was disappointed with Tekken. I like Tekken 3 and a fan of the series and it's characters, but I was disappointed with Tekken 6, and since Tekken Tag Tournament 2 came out within weeks before DOA 5, I had to save my money for the latter.

I haven't been excited for a video game for a long time, so I opted to get the works: DOA 5 Collector's Edition :)

I've been playing it for hours and into days, and I'm in cloud 9. The new game plays like a dream. Team Ninja did a good job with their latest installment, and it seems they listened to fans about concerns from the demo a few months back.

The gameplay is tight and it caters to both rookies and hardcore pros. The best way to describe it is that it's easy to learn, but hard to master, like chess. Yet, it's so enjoyable to play. I'm a casual gamer, and semi-hardcore, at best. I can play tough games like Ninja Gaiden (with the exception of the horrible NG 3; shame on Team Ninja for that one); and with DOA, I can have my moments, but end up doing rookie mistakes. The great thing about DOA 5 is that it's become more accessible than the previous DOAs (all of which were so hard at times, that it can test patience).

The graphics are amazing this time around too. It has always had the best fighting game graphics, but now, Team Ninja has outdone themselves. With destructive and interactive environments, as well as sweat and dirt on your characters, it feels like you've been on an actual fight.

The sound and the story are decent, but I haven't played a fighting game that could do any better.

All in all, I'm so into DOA 5 that I started watching tournament play on youtube, just to immerse myself in all things DOA again. I'm so happy that this series is finally getting the respect it deserves, despite some biased opinions from some reviews based on political mentality (favoring their own gaming franchises), and hopefully, it will introduce a great game to a new generation.

I'm still smiling because I own the game. It really is worth your money, and fighting entertainment at it's best.

First off let me start by saying that I am an avid fighting game fan, but fairly new to the DOA series, the only DOA game I have played before this one is DOA:Dimensions, which got me interested in the series. After playing Dead or Alive 5 for a while, I can say that I don't regret buying it one bit. DOA 5 is an enjoyable fighting game that offers a unique gameplay experience that is a nice change of pace from other fighting games. I'll break this down into sections and try to explain my thoughts on each feature.

Gameplay

The way the fighting mechanic in DOA 5 works is like a rock-paper-scissors style system, strikes beat throw, throws beat holds, and holds beat strikes. This is way the game works, it sounds simple, and in theory it is, but the system goes much deeper than simple rock-paper-scissors when you get into it. You have two attack buttons, one for punches and one for kicks, at first I thought this would be a setback, but when I got to experience it the moves are pretty varied, and I had a blast discovering combos and stringing together moves. The move set in this game is vast, a lot of characters have easily over one hundred moves, a lot of which seem practical and good for mix-ups. Throws are simple, grab a blocking opponent, or predict opponents hold, and punish with a throw, if you guess right you deal bonus counter damage, some characters have special throws , such as wake up and ground throws. Now the way holds work in this game are interesting. Unlike Dimensions where there was a three point system, this one uses(returns to?) a 4 point hold system:mid-punch, mid-kick, high punch/kick, and low punch/kick. I like that aspect a lot, and feel it adds a whole new layer of mind games to the fray. The importance of guessing/reading your opponents strike is critical. You can hold while in critical stun, but if you miss you prolong your stun state. It feels amazing putting your opponent in critical stun and having them throw out a hold only to miss so you can continue your combo. When playing a match, the pace and overall flow just feel right. There are also power blows which make for a nice comeback factor, and critical burst which guarantees a combo.

Online

My experience online has ranged from very good, to unplayable matches. It is fun when you can find a good connection but the lag is terrible on a bad one, I dropped combos, presses registered late or didn't register at all, holds were next to impossible, and it took about 10 seconds for an in game second to pass. The lobbies are abundant and there are plenty of people to play, but if you have a terrible connection, it might be difficult finding a good match, could just be me though. The load times are acceptable. The replay feature is a nice addition, but be wary, I don't know if this is a glitch, but I won a match and saved the replay, but the replay showed me losing, even though I won in real time, and I received the ranked points. Other than that, it does what you expect when it works.

Practice

I actually like the way they implement the training modes in this game, you simply go into training and everything is there for you to tweak. You can hop straight into command training, which is a little confusing at first, but nice when you get the hang of it. You can view frame data for each of your moves, even stun recovery. It realty is a great feature and I appreciate it. You can also hop straight into online matches when an icon pops up on your screen(called throwdowns).

Graphics

Characters look amazing, the facial expressions and animations of each character really bring them to life. the stages look amazing as well, though for some stages, they look a bit less unimpressive, the cinematic stage scenes are visually impressive(can turn of if you want) and the multi-platform stages add depth. There is very little to no clipping of clothing or characters(I haven't noticed any). Characters also sweat and get dirty when fighting which is a nice little detail(which can be turned off if you want).

Story

The story is enjoyable for what it is worth, it has a nice pace with some optional challenges in each fight which will unlock a title if you complete them. The VF character cameos are nicely done imo. The character interaction is great, and the characters are well voiced. All in all, it isn't the best story in a fighting game, but it is good for what it tries to accomplish.

Sound

The soundtrack is probably the weakest part about this game, which is sad because I have heard music from previous installments, and felt they could have done better. There are a few good songs, but it is pretty unmemorable. The voice acting is well done imo, both in English and Japanese, some might disagree but to each their own. The hit effects and battle cries sound top notch.

Complexity

This is a pretty deep game, it is different from Tekken, SF, as it should be; I wont go into which is more complex, but there is a lot to learn here, and a lot of reward to be gained from putting in the time. I feel you can easily have 4-5 mains in this game with this game though, and that is a good thing for me as there are a lot of fun characters in DOA 5, and since I only usually pick up two main characters in other games, it feels refreshing to be able to use more without feeling like you are learning from scratch all over. As it has been stated before I am reiterating that this is a game that can be played casual and experienced players alike and still feel rewarding.

Overall

I really like this game, it feels like a fresh change of pace from what I normally play, and it has a complex but easy to understand fighting system. I like the simple interface, and the organization of the menus, and the practice mode is the best I have seen so far. The characters are all unique and interesting, the cast isn't too large, and it feels like there is a character for everyone. The lag can be ridiculously annoying, and the load times are a minor annoyance, which can break the flow of the game, but all in all I believe it is a great fighting game. It isn't the best fighting game I have played, but it has certainly earned a place in my heart and is well deserving of a 4.8/5.

This game also features unlockable characters and costumes which is an appreciated feature, and reminds me of the days when things were unlockable and rewarding when you finally unlocked a char/item.

I am a huge fan of DOA and have been for over a decade.

After about 10 solid gameplay hours I feel I can give my opinion on this game. While at first I was sort of put off at this game(had to relearn some characters moves and it took me a while to get the hang of playing a VF character in the DOA setting), the more I play it the more I enjoy it.

I really enjoy playing this game online, yes in some matches there is a lot of lag, but a lot of the matches I've had online have been good.

Pros:

improved graphics

Virtua Fighter characters

the new charging attacks and environmental features

great stat tracking

challenging difficulty levels if you want a challenge

first set of DLC costumes were free

Cons:

takes a lot of time to unlock the outfits

soundtrack could have been better

some technical issues(freezing, stuttering and sometimes really bad online lag)

additional DLC costumes sets are too expensive

While the game is still fun to play, this is by far the weakest entry in the Karaoke Revolution franchise. As my wife points out, these games are all about the singing, and KRAI: Encore delivers on this point. The tracklist has 40 titles, with a pretty good mix of genres spanning over several decades. The songs are, with a few exceptions, spot-on covers of the originals. And the background graphics are quite good, very realistic, almost like you're there.

However, my wife's opinions notwithstanding, there are a great many flaws in the game:

1. Sub-par character graphics. The graphics and animation are terrible. Konami decided to go away from the "cartoony" characters and make them more human and life-like. The cartoony characters looked better and moved better. The more life-like characters are--let's face it--ugly, and their dancing is horrid. Also, you cannot customize every feature of your character as you could in some previous versions.

2. Let us have a moment of silence for Konami's loss of it's partner in the franchise, Harmonix. The system for monitoring and scoring rhythm and pitch, though in appearance and theory is the same, is not as good or as accurate. I've found the arrow bouncing around the pitch bars more often than ever before, which is really annoying.

3. One word sums up the online store: disappointing. And this was the selling point of the game for my wife, to be able to download new songs. So far the only songs up on the store are songs from previous versions of the game! True, those will go into this version of the game and count towards total score and platinum/diamond records. But if we're singing just to sing, why not just pop in one of the other discs, which are already paid for?! Given time, I hope that Konami will provide NEW songs for download, not just even more songs from previous releases.

4. Yet ANOTHER new microphone that you DON"T need. (We have 4 KR mics.) Wait and buy the game when it doesn't come in a bundle.

I have several of the Karaoke Revolution games and this one disappoints. You can not really use the game for Karaoke as when you get 3/4 of the way through the song static starts crackling through the speakers. This is a flaw in the game that Konami is aware of but there is no word from them as to when a fix will be out. The only solution to this problem is to turn the mic volume down to zero. Two mics for duet mode are also very hard to get working. You have to go muck with the audio settings on the PS3 (choose Logitech Microphone). I recommend only buying this game when they have these problems fixed. Also I assumed when I bought the game that you could put your face on you character with a PlayStation Eye, but the camera only displays what is sees in the background of the game in certain venues.

UPDATE: I recently bought SingStar for the PS3 and tried the microphones with Karaoke Revolution: American Idol Encore. IT HELPS WITH THE STATIC PROBLEM mentioned above. I have found much less static using the Singstar PS3 mics. The Singstar mics are of good quailty and connect to a USB adapter box (two mics with stereo style jacks plug into the adapter box which uses one USB port). Duet mode works with the two Singstar mics without any mucking around. Not a perfect solution, but better than the included mics.

I wanted to try and balance out the negative reviews the PS3 version of this game has been getting. I actually think its the best version of Karaoke Revolution yet. It's like the original PS2 game with improved HD graphics, multiple play modes, online play and leaderboards, and over a hundred downloadable songs(so far). It also works with the PS Eye or the original Eyetoy(for live video to the background screens) and any standard USB microphone. I really think having downloadable songs is the best feature, because you can build up a library of your favorite songs from past versions all on one disc, and not have to drop in and out of a game. If you have any of the old Karaoke Revolution games, you can sell them on Ebay (some of the original games are going for big bucks) and just build up your song collection in this game.

And unlike Singstar, you can use Rockband microphones and this game has a lot more songs that are fun to sing!

Pros:

Updated HD graphics

Lots of gameplay options, multi player and online matches

Online leaderboards

40 songs included, over 100 downloadable songs with more on the way

Unlockable HD videos of past Idol performances

Cons:

Can't use PS Eye/Eyetoy to import your own face on to a character. The one feature that the PS2 version has that I miss!

There is no difference from the one for the ps2, just the song selection. I expected it to be real different since its for the ps3. Expected too much....didnt live up to it. Sitting on my shelf catching dust while I play Singstar......much better karaoke game for the ps3.

There is a current bevy of games with Singing or Karaoke in them. Why settle for some mediocre title as this. My fiance and I bought this to expand our Karaoke lineup, along with Rockband and some other games. We hardly touched this game. It is marred by terrible interface, small song lineup, and bad voice recognition. This makes it a lackluster title not worth the money.
