I bought 2 of these motion controlers from this seller. The controlers arrived on time but it did not work.I charged it properly and everytime I would push the playstation 3 connect button a red light would flash for few sec and then it would turn off without connecting to the ps3. So I finally had to return it. IDK if its just my luck that I got defective product or most product this person sells are defective. One thing for sure is I am not buying from this guy again, I refuse to be fooled again.

Installed these on a PS3 controller along with trigger stops. These were put on a white controller and they look awesome, and feel just like the original buttons. My thumbsticks were starting to get worn and losing their grip, so it was nice to have a brand new pair. Its just like getting a brand new controller for a fraction of the price.

NOTE: (Nov. 9, 2010) The PlayStation 3 320 GB with a larger disc is now available for the same price. Another option is PlayStation 3 320GB System with PlayStation Move Bundle which would make sense if the Move was something you wanted with your PS3.

< BEGIN REVIEW >

Briefly, the PS3-250 is the exact original PS3 'Slim' with a twice as large hard disk.

I had the opportunity to actually see and use a PS3-250 on the Sunday prior to its launch. As I expected, the only difference between the ps3-250 and the PS3-120 is the larger disk with everything else the same. Many reviews of the PS3-120 are HERE.

< END OF REVIEW >

Once the decision was made to get a PS3, 2 important questions might be:

Which model to buy? PS3-120 or PS3-250?

To upgrade or not to upgrade to a 500/640GB PS3?

Based on personal experience and the experience of other PS3 owners that I know, the options are the following remember, these are my views:

PS3-120, no upgrade

---------------------

Buy a PS3-120 and do not upgrade if you use it mainly to play movies and you rarely download games from the PSN store. It will take you very far and it should have sufficient room for storing thousands of pictures and a lot of music besides it playing Blu-ray content and CDs.

I found that 120GB would not be enough for me. After a couple of years of use, with a few downloaded games, many more demos, lots of pictures and songs and some videos the kids made with the PS3 Eye we've breached the 120GB threshold. I would not worry about that if all I wanted was one of the better Blu-ray players. In addition, anybody comfortable with backing up/restoring the PS3 and upgrading the disk can postpone the upgrade step for later.

PS3-250, no upgrade

---------------------

Buy a PS3-250 and do not upgrade if you do plan to download a few movies and games but not a lot of them AND/or you don't feel comfortable with upgrading your PS3 yourself.

Anyone who is not an almost-exclusive movie viewer and doesn't want to mess with screws and OEM disks should buy the PS3-250. It should have enough capacity to last for quite a few years with good disk space management (delete the demos and downloads you no longer need).

PS3-120 upgrade to 500/640GB

------------------------------

Buy a PS3-120 and upgrade it to 500/640GB IF you don't mind swapping the PS3's disk. You get to upgrade your PS3-120 to quadruple capacity for very little expense and probably for less than a PS3-250 would cost you (see next paragraph). This should buy you peace of mind for the rest of your PS3's lifespan.

Keep in mind that a 500GB HDD such as the 500GB Scorpio Blue Mobile Sata 5400RPM 8MB 2.5IN or the Western Digital 640 GB SATA OEM Notebook Hard Drive WD6400BEVT (Scorpio Blue) if you don't mind the extra expense can be had for about 90 dollars at the time I am writing this. That would make a 500GB upgraded PS3-120 appear a little more expensive than the PS3-250 BUT you are left with a brand-new 120GB HDD (the drive originally in the PS3) when you are done and you can either sell it or use it as an external USB-powered backup drive or maybe to upgrade your laptop's drive. This would effectively set the price of the 500GB upgraded console to match that of the PS3-250.

There are many online guides that detail the process. I will post a couple URL's in a comment to this review.

PS3-250 upgrade to 500/640GB (not recommended)

------------------------------------------------

Do NOT buy a PS3-250 if you are planning to upgrade it to 500/640GB unless you really need a spare 250GB external HDD instead of a spare 120GB HDD and think that the price difference is worth the larger spare drive.

EVALUATION

The PS3-250 while not for everyone, deserves its 5 stars. In my view, there is enough value added by doubling the storage capacity to justify the price difference over the PS3-120.

______________________________________

NOTE: If you want to upgrade you are better off if you upgrade immediately.

This way you avoid the backup/restore hassles and therefore greatly simplify the process. I would include the upgrade HDD on the same order with the new PS3 and maybe add a HDD enclosure if planning to use the drive I removed from the PS3 as an external drive.

I had no idea which unit to buy, the 120 or the 250 GB Playstation 3. I ended up with the 250 out of fear that the 120 would leave me desiring more space later. If you don't know anything, here is what I see so far. On the Playstation network, you can download game demos and marketing videos for games free. I haven't found myself doing this a lot yet. Of course, you can also delete them easily after you watch them.

Most playable games even old ones cost to download so I have decided to just buy a couple of the popular ones and am hooked on those and the stunning DVD and Blu Ray movie quality for now. You are not going to be able to download games like Modern Warefare 2 to your hard drive from the PS network that I can see. WHen you buy a game at the store or here on amazon in disc format, you have to install it first. This may take some hard drive space. So far, one game I have takes nearly 3 GB and another takes up less than 1 GB but the games also called for an update download which I don't know how much space that took. At this rate, you could install maybe 100 store bought disc format games.

Playing movies on disc doesn't seem to take hard drive space. You can download movies from the Playstation network. If you do much of this, I image you'll need more space but the movies I was interested in cost the same amount to buy from amazon or wal-mart as to download so if you can wait to go to the store or recieve a package, you don't need to download it. You can rent movies also. I imagine this is a download that is disabled after a time period or after it is viewed or something. You can also download TV shows like "The Office" for $2 an eposode. If you want to do a lot of that, maybe the bigger HD is a good idea.

I am thinking you would do well with just the 120GB unless you know you are going to make a collection of movies and TV shows and low priced downloadable games on your Playstation.

You can also save photos on the Playstation as well as video. If this is part of your plan, well again more space may help. The PS3 has USB ports where I believe you could load photos and home movies from to view on your TV.

You can also access your applications on the www like facebook.

Bare in mind that there are a lot of folkes out there with older PS3's that have only 40 and 80 GB drives who love their playstation and don't feel the need for the 250 GB drive.

I don't feel upset that I spent the extra $50 to get the larger drive because it might be useful later, but if I knew then what I know now, I would have been comfortable buying the 120 for my purposes which is playing a small number of games (not a small amount of time, just a small number of games because they cost a lot) and watching some Blu Ray movies.

If you still find it hard to make a decision, ask yourself if you want to spend more money because both models are the same except the HD size which you can upgrade later. By the time you buy the unit, HD cable, a game, maybe another controller and remote control for Blu Ray, you'll be in deep on the expense and maybe another $50 isn't acceptable.

It is a very good and fun product. After I spent all the money on what I needed, I debated on hooking it up or sending it back because it was a lot of money; I'm very glad I hooked it up and delt with the expense. It is everything I hoped.

Prior to getting the PS3, we had a Sony BluRay player, an Apple TV and a PC hooked up to our Sony Bravia LCD TV. PC was used for Netflix and backing up the Apple TV, Apple TV was used to rent and buy movies, and the Sony BluRay Player simply played BluRay DVDs. After learning about the functionality of the PS3, I was sold.

We've had it for about 2 weeks now and I am ever impressed with it's capabilities and quality. Keep in mind, this is the first type of gaming system like this we've owned (we do have a Wii but I put this in a different class). Here's my take on the various functions and their quality, smoothness and quickness of processing/playing.

Gaming Amazing quality with no hesitations at all (playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2) and I've been playing quite a bit since we first got it. Like the Wii, you can download old games like Mortal Kombat II and new ones for PS3 and the PSP. Initially, I didn't think I was going to play that much but the graphics and the games have been really cool. Not much of an online player at the moment but it seems that most have this option available. Even Mortal Kombat II. You can create user profiles on the PS3 which automatically link to saved game data. Automatic and very nice. Create additional users so they can advance at their own pace.

BluRay Discs load quicker than the Sony BluRay player we bought about 9-12 months ago. Thoroughly impressed with the quality of the picture. You can also play older discs and they'll work just fine.

Netflix You'll need to get a disc from Netflix to be able to do this. We've watched Instant Watch movies via PC/Internet on our TV and the quality wasn't too bad. I say acceptable and sometimes the movie would freeze for a few seconds. On average about two freezes per movie. We were expecting the same thing via the PS3 but were dead wrong. The quality is AMAZING and there has not been one hiccup in the video. This really impressed us...and I'm a picky so don't take that compliment lightly. :)

Renting/Buying Movies/Shows via PlayStation Store Lots of shows available for viewing, including the current season of whatever season you're into. We don't rent these but it's nice to know we can in case the DVR gets goofed up for some reason. As for movies, the files are larger compared to Apple TV/iTunes downloads but with this the quailty is much better. HD movies are available but they're pretty big, about 6 GB! If you're buying movies then it's worth the wait and the extra 5 dollars. SD movies are still good quality for basic rentals. However, if you have a good cable connection you may want to rely on your On Demand Rentals to bypass waiting for long HD downloads. Again, PS Store is good for purchases and I encourage it to save on materials/resources...go green where you can. :) Only downfall with buying/renting movies this way is that the files don't have chapter markers so you can advance through sections of the movie like you can with a DVD. Hopefully they change this.

Internet If you need to access the web you can but you'll probably want to pick up the Logitech keyboard to do this. The speed of browsing isn't too fast and the viewing area isn't the largest. I'll walk over to my computer to do a search rather than use the PS3.

Photos/Music Depending on your computer setup (Mac or PC) you may need to get some additional software in order to turn your computer into a media server. Then, through your wireless network you can access the music and play it through the PS3. Same goes for photos...or you can load the photos onto the PS3 directly, same goes for the music. Really amazing features but take a little research on what file formats are compatible, etc.

PS3 Backup With an external drive attached, you can back up the PS3, which is great.

Overall, I say go for the 250GB if you're into being green like me and wish to download games, movies and load photos and music. This device is truly an all-in-one and like I said, I'm picky. Not to mention I understand technology pretty well. If, after taking a realistic inventory, you will use all or the majority of the services, grab one of these suckers. I'd also recommend going Sony for your TV and surround sound. They all work really well together.

Enjoy!

Hi there,

Let me give you some background:

I purchased a PS3 60 GB model at launch back in November 2006. I have loved everything about it ever since. I even upgraded the hard drive to a 250 GB hard drive about a year and a half ago.

Why did I choose to purchase this new, slim, 250 GB model?

Honestly, it's a great deal for what you get. It's cooler (temperature wise), more energy efficient, and it takes up MUCH less space than my previous model. (Not to mention the much nicer, matte black finish as opposed to the older piano black finish which is a scratch/fingerprint magnet.)

Thinking about the new 120 GB vs. this 250 GB model? Maybe this will help:

Originally, I had planned to buy the 120 GB model and upgrade to a 250 GB or 320 GB hard drive myself. However, at the $349.99 price point, there's no need to perform the upgrade myself. For a quality Western Digital or Seagate 250 GB hard drive, you'll be spending anywhere from $50 to $70 plus shipping and/or tax, and for a 320 GB hard drive you'll be spending upwards of $75. Honestly, there really isn't any reason for that with this model. Why go through the hassle when Sony offers a great package at the perfect price point?

I for one am happy with my purchase which I received today from Amazon and am happily inagurating it with the GI Joe: Rise of Cobra blu-ray. For almost anyone that I can think of, the 250 GB hard drive will be more than enough space. However, should the need arise in a year or two (or three), a 500 GB hard drive will be dirt cheap and easy enough to install.

By now, the PS3 has been extensively reviewed and this latest iteration (the "slim") has been out in the 120gb format for 2 months now (since September 1st, 2009).

To summarize the benefits:

Slimmer, lighter, and more energy efficient than the prior "fat" PS3

Blu-ray player built-in

Netflix streaming (yay!)

Free online service (vs. subscription based X-box live)

The negatives:

No backwards compatibility with PS2 games

Bluetooth remote only (and not included, so need to purchase a remote to use as a dvd/blu-ray player, no IR (but a number of bluetooth-to-IR solutions like Logitech Harmony Adapter or Infra-red to Bluetooth Adapter)

No more Linux support

With Blu-ray player prices now dropping to the $100-$150 range, the PS3 makes for an expensive option as a Blu-ray player only. As a home media center player/HTPC device, it really shines and is a great deal (you can't build a HTPC with a blu-ray player for less). It IS somewhat limited, however, as a HTPC as its browser is not up to par. Too bad Sony dropped linux support for the PS3. The addition of Netflix streaming (currently requiring a disc but supposedly becoming native in a future firmware update) just ices this cake.

edit to address the HD upgrade issue:

Yes, you can buy the 120gb for $50 less and, yes, you can install whatever capacity 2.5" hard drive you'd like fairly easily as long as you're willing to pay for a new hard drive. BUT, considering that (1.) you'd still have to spend extra money (more than the $50 difference), (2.) spend time and effort to upgrade and (3.) you'd then have an extra 120gb hard drive afterwards to go through the hassle of ebaying (unless you turn it into another usb/backup drive--I've got too many as it is). I find that it is just not worth it. Spend the extra $50, get the 250gb installed by Sony and warrantied by Sony.

First let me say that I am starting to like the intro's Ubi Soft is doing. Just like AC3, this game begins as a playable introduction (lead in) to the game

I will do a more thorough review after I have completed more of the game, but after 10+ hours (**update** 17+ hours), I really like this game. As stated in previous reviews, do not think that you are buying a SKYRIM game with guns. This game is not that. It is its own game, and qualifies for 5 starts under its own merit.

I enjoy the hunting and crafting in this game, as it is not to complicated. Find and craft. I like that. No need to find someone to train you to make better things. Just pick up the supplies and craft from the menu. Really LOVE THAT!

Killing is great in this game. Many different styles and approaches to take. Are you a silent hunter? Or are you a in your face killer. To me, I am both. Some quest have you take down the "leader" with a knife and some are just shoot them up. You decide how to go about it. I find a combination of both work, with plenty of health and green leaves in the bag. (To make more health shots)

I like the fact that you do not have to train on one weapon and that will be your focus for the rest of the game. I like being able to go from AK to sniper or sneaking around with the bow to take out a Tiger (Really hard by the way). All fun.

Only one down side that I have seen so far. The actual quest system. Currently there is no way to designate which quest you want to work on. The last one you pick up is the one that the map will show. I hope that this is because how early I am in the game, but thus far it seems that is the system. (Cause of this, I would drop it to 4.5 starts, but I rounded up) Not a game killer, but kind of annoying. **UPDATE** So far the quest system is getting more annoying. Once you "enter" an area with the main quest, it will lock you in to completing it. You are not allowed to leave the area or the game will reset you to your last auto save. So be careful on where you walk when doing side quest or roaming, as you may get locked into doing another part of the main quest. (Even with that annoyance, I am still leaving it a 5 stars. I am having that much fun with the game)

Other than that minor issue, if you like sandbox open world games, and like shooters, and like a challenge, and like good voice acting, and great story (so far) then this game is for you.

(I cant wait to get off work and get back to it)

Enjoy

I love a good open world game, Skyrim, Fallout, GTA etc. This game is right up there with those. While those games featured rather bleak setting this game gives you a lush tropical archipelago to explore, There is no shortage of things to do and see. The best part of this game is its complete freedom and unpredictability. One time I was stalking an enemy base, plotting out the best way to attack it, I found a good sniping position, set up to take the shots, and BAM! out of nowhere I got attacked by a tiger out of the jungle! Me and the two friends watching me play the game all literally screamed "HOLY S***"! Never had so much fun losing a life on a game! Another example of the spontanaity this game provides? I took a boat out on the ocean to go deep sea treasure hunting. I dive down, grab the loot, easy enough, I'm swimming back to the surface, BOOM! Shark attacks me! Blood goes everywhere, he lets me go and swims away, I'm thinking ok good hes gone. He turns around and bolts back towards me, I turn and swim like mad towards a tiny rock outcropping, fingers missing buttons as i swim and then attempt to climb the rock. I slip down the rock back into the water, i go under and he bites me again! I manage to get on to the rock, quickly spin around and spray the water with my chaingun. The beast is dead and im down to next to zero health. It felt like I was playing the best jaws game ever! So there I am on this little rock with my boat close to me but still probably a 50 yard swim. I'm contemplating whether I want to attempt the swim to it or make the longer swim to land but go thru clearer shallower waters. Great Great random moment! Oh and if you think its all random animal attacks theres sooo much more. Theres also the constant threat of pirates, radio tower and enemy base takeovers, ancient ruin exploration, hunting expeditions, contract killing, racing, hang gliding, and oh yeah if thats not enough theres also the actual story missions! The world is so damn fun I've only done two of those so far, but both were excellent! Get this game and prepare to be sucked in for hours on end! Can not recommend this enough!

Far Cry 3 is by far the best installment in the series so far. The sandbox style world is frankly amazing, the firefights intense, the strategy demanding, the challenge real and the story excellently balanced between disturbing and amusing. I am writing this review after having played through on the PS3.

The sandbox world has just about everything you could ask for. The only thing I can think of that is missing is an actual volcano, otherwise the two islands that make up this game's playable area are everything you'd expect on a tropical island. The addition of wildlife in this game adds such an aspect of realism, I found myself stalking a tiger just to watch him take down a deer or goat. This addition also adds a new type of terror/suspense to the game. There is nothing like quickly trying to escape a firefight that you plundered into, running through the jungle and finally escaping your assailants, just to be mauled and pummeled by a tiger. While the resilience and toughness of some of the animals detracts from realism, it certainly adds to the anxiety. And just like Far Cry 2, almost everything will burn in this game. The world also goes between stages of weather and transitions between night and day. Standard these days, but still a nice effect. 11/10 ;)

The firefights, especially towards the beginning are very intense. Until you unlock enough of the "skills" to boost your health bars and make body armor more effective, only a couple of bullets will drop you on the intermediate setting. However this is followed by most of the enemies being easily eliminated by a small string of fire to center mass. What is different for this game is the implementation of cover. While the system is a little rough around the edges, it does allow you to hide behind cover and then peek out and fire rounds off at hostiles. 9.5/10

Unlike Far Cry 2, where it seemed impossible to use stealth. This game makes it a requirement in some missions, and is highly encouraged in others. Targets are capable of being marked prior to walking into an area, while it feels like cheating most the time, it does make using stealth a must more attractive option. To add to the push for using stealth, there are a plethora of different knife skills that can be unlocked. Each of these having its own unique "kill sequence", and some allowing you to silently remove more than one enemy, and the most useful to me; one that allows you to drag a recently parted victim's body to a discrete area. 10/10

The challenge in this game comes mostly from the improved use of enemy AI. While they are still not brilliant, they do notice sounds and are spooked by finding their buddy lying dead on the ground. The enemy itself will work together to suppress and kill you, as well as take cover to hide from your fire. The confrontations with some of the islands predators is also challenging, as well as occasionally terrifying, though the idea of a shark attack bothers me anyways. The enemies are also specialized, making some of them quite difficult to kill and makes plotting strikes against enemy establishments require careful and thorough planning. 9/10

The story, while touching on absurd in portions and stretches in other parts, is over all very entertaining. Quite frankly it is well written, much like any of the older Bond movies but with much more violence. There are amusing small quips and one liners spread throughout the interactions of the main character and the NPC's. Some of the situations you find yourself in are brilliant, but in an absurd sort of way. Expect to find yourself going down in a sinking ship, or being dropped into a deep spring, hands bound and tied to a concrete block. The story arc overall is fair to good, I would rate it at 7.5/10.

The game overall is worth every penny just for the single player. The addition to weapon customizations and the improved system controls, should also make this an interesting and likely worthy multiplayer. This game has a few small quirks, and no one should expect a Shakespeare story, but you should expect hours of thrills and plenty of enjoyment. There is one side note I wish to finish with, this game is especially violent and is likely not suitable for your 11 year old. It is brutal and graphic in many of the missions and in much of the game's surrounding environment. There are also scenes (while only a few) that border on soft core pornography, while I do not mind this myself, it is quite graphic. Don't let this deter you from playing, but do let this guide you if you think you might be buying this for your child. Overall 9.8/10

I mainly wanted this game because I read that it has offline co-op and my husband and I enjoyed playing games such as Borderlands (1 & 2) and Left 4 Dead (1 & 2) together. So I'll split the review between offline co-op and single player.

We tried the offline co-op first and there were a couple of things we were both frustrated by in co-op. The first night we started playing, we found out that we have to play through a whole chapter (consisting of 4 or 5 parts) in one playthrough. It doesn't save your game anywhere in the middle of the chapter. So imagine our surprise when we got hungry, stopped the game, and came back after eating to find that all the progress we made in the chapter was gone and we had to play through the whole thing again.

Since there was no save, the characters and weapons do not level. I'm not sure if it's different in online co-op. But we're stuck using the same weapons and our characters remain fairly weak even after five, six chapters. Two or three shots will kill and since there's no leveling, the bosses get tough to beat. And worst of all, there are these attack dogs that'll get you and there's basically no way of surviving the attack (even though prompts come up for button smashing) if your partner is not there to shoot it off of you. It reminded us of the Left 4 Dead games where you just play the same-ish characters through these chapters. You don't level and you don't get better weapons. And towards the end, there's a swarm of enemies and some boss that you'll need to somehow survive.

The good is that the revive time is really long so there's usually some way to save your partner. But that and the fun of playing with my husband are really about all that's good with the offline co-op.

Since the co-op was a bit disappointing for us, I decided to try out the single player since, from descriptions, it seems like a totally different game than the co-op. And I am glad I tried it and I'm a huge fan of the single-player.

To me, the single player reminds me a lot of the Assassin's Creed games. You're given a map that's blurred and the blurred areas reveal themselves after you capture radio towers. There are treasure chests to loot and you can buy maps that reveal the treasure chests. Then obviously, you buy weapons and other upgrades with your loot. There are also forts to capture and, once you do, the good guys control the area. Just like Assassin's Creed.

The island environment is lush and beautiful and I greatly enjoy running around the island even when I'm not sniping someone. So far, I haven't had any major glitches or graphics issues and I thought the game sounds and looks great.

The hunting part I could have done without. After Red Dead Redemption, I really didn't want to play another game where I have to skin animals while accompanied by squishy sound effects. Sadly, it's actually pretty important to kill and skin animals in order to upgrade backpacks and holsters. Honestly, in all that killing and looting, the character couldn't have gotten a larger weapons holster off of those pirates?

And speaking of pirates, I'm going to go off on a tangent here: I thought the story logic was shoddy. I don't pay a whole lot of attention to the plot of games, but it seems like in this game, the protagonist and his friends were captured by pirates while vacationing and now they're on this island caught between the pirates and the natives. The natives are willing to help and there are working radio towers on this island. Yet no one ever thought of calling some sort of authority? Notifying the U.S. embassy? I mean, it's not just one or two tourists lost on this island. From the opening, it seems like the pirates have 30+ kidnapped tourists. From the abandoned suitcases everywhere, it seems like the island has a rich history of lost tourists. Yet no one calls any sort of authority in this matter? I really had to suspend belief every time the main character goes on about how he needs to save his friends...by himself. Anyways!

Probably the only major con about the single player (asides from poor logic) is the horrible weapons wheel thing. It feels like the intuitive thing to do is to switch weapons with the d-pad. But nope. You first have to equip weapons in the weapons wheel and then you can only switch between two guns without going back into the weapons wheel, even if you have four weapons equipped. So I basically only use an assault rifle and a sniper rifle even though I really want to try the bow and arrow and a pistol. But since switching between weapons is such a hassle, I don't.

In the end, I thought the single player was so much fun that I can't see why the developers didn't just make offline co-op exactly like the single player except with, you know, two players. In short, I wish it was more Borderlands than Left 4 Dead. So overall, the game's great and I can't wait to play more of it. But I'm taking a star off for the subpar offline co-op, the animal skinning, and the horrible weapons wheel.

This is a great game in terms of gameplay, graphics and all the things you are able to do in the game like hunting and taking over outposts, so there's that. Then there is the story and characters of the game, this is where it's not so great. After putting in over 30 hours into this game i can't help but feel disappointed by it. What we know is that a bunch of friends go skydiving and land on rook island, and from there get kidnapped by the pirates on the island. You and your brother try to escape from Vaas and your brother ends up getting killed, you get killed and get rescued by Dennis and from there you make it your main mission to rescue your friends.

One problem is that your friends and girlfriend are never developed and we know nothing about them other then their descriptions, names and some of them are whiny and douchy. A bigger problem is that Jason is a very unlikable character and has no chemistry with his girlfriend or friends which makes me wonder again why he even needs or wants to save his friends, considering that and he already decided he wants to stay on the island to discover himself.

As you play on we finally get to the ending and it's disappointing to say the least. Citra or the rakyat kidnap your friends once again and you fly to the temple with Riley and get to make a choice either stay with citra or save your friends. If you stay with citra you get a terrible ending which involves killing your brother and friends which makes absolutely no sense because you spent the whole game trying to save them, and then bang Citra and she kills you. If you save your friends Dennis accidentally kills Citra trying to kill you and you leave with your friends. One thin that bothered me with the ending is that Jason already decided to stay on the island earlier in the game so i thought the ending choice was unnecessary. The writers shouldn't have had Jason decide to stay that early in the story and just wait until the end, the whole killing your friends ruined the story. Originally i would have rated this game a 9/10 but then after seeing the ending and the bad characters i would probably now rate this a 7 or 6 out of ten.

When the Disgaea series debuted way back in 2003 it had a unique appeal. It was something that you just simply didn't see a whole lot of. It was funny and was charming in a way. But what made it stand above all else was by far the interesting concepts put forth in the battle system. Since then, however, Disgaea hasn't really changed much. Disgaea 4 is the same way. If you didn't get into Disgaea before, Disgaea 4 isn't going to change your mind. But if you've stuck with Disgaea since the beginning, you may find something in Disgaea 4.

As usual for a Disgaea game, it takes place in the netherworld where you'll likely control demons. Valvatorez was once a powerful tyrant but after losing his powers he has been reduced to being the guy who trains the new Prinnies. Unfortunately he may soon be out of the job when the corrupt government of the Netherworld decides that they need to exterminate every last Prinny. It is up to Valvatorez to save the Prinnies. Compared to the last couple of entries, Disgaea 4's story is actually quite political. This doesn't mean it forsakes its characters, but those not too big on political humor or satire, may not find Disgaea 4 to be that enjoyable. There are a lot of ridiculous jokes weaved into the tale along with some clever parodies and satirical observations. You'll find bigger and better stories in several other JRPG's but at least it's enjoyable to a degree. The characters are likable and charming and some of the dialog is funny. What you may not appreciate right off hand is the voice acting itself. Disgaea has always gone for over the top voice acting and at times it has been annoying. You can opt to listen to the dialog in Japanese if you wish, or you can turn it off all together. The story is still told through, for the most part, small skits that involve character portraits standing across from each other. A charm of Disgaea that has yet to actually grow tiresome or old. All told the story might not keep your attention but some of the funny lines will. But nothing will hold your attention like the gameplay.

Disgaea has always been known for it's unique gameplay structure. And if you've played previous games in the series you won't find too many additions here. Like your typical strategy RPG Disgaea has you sending characters into the field of battle where you battle your enemies in phases. The game is much more complex than most Strategy RPGs, even today. As I said, if you've played the series before you'll have no trouble slipping right in, but newcomers will find themselves lost. The game slowly piles on new concepts for you to grasp. First introducing you to the basics of attacks before slowly introducing you to special moves and defending. It then jumps into some of the more interesting concepts of the gameplay, such as the Geo Symbols. The Geo Symbols have always been what separates Disgaea from other games. When in battle you'll no doubt notice that certain tiles are certain colors and blocks on them. Each Geo Symbol will give any color tile it sits on a specific buff or debuff. It can be something as simple as "Recovery 40%" or something as damaging as "Ally Damage 20%". It might even be something different such as providing you with 50% more experience. This aspect of the Geo Panels has often made some of Disgaea's battles feel a little puzzle based. The enemies are not always something to worry about. So are the different tiles in battle. And Disgaea 4 is relentless at times. If you go rushing off into too many battles it isn't shy about punishing you. If you don't take time to meticulously learn some of the gameplay mechanics the game is likely to be much more challenging than it has to be.

Along with the Geo Symbols, Disgaea 4 brings back other familiar things. The item world is back, allowing you to dive in and go deep to raise the level of your weapons. The item world has been expanded upon a bit. Every five floors you now get to branch off and explore more than you otherwise would. There are still mystery rooms filled with goodies and surprises too. The item world pretty much showcases another thing Disgaea is about: Grinding. If you've been coddled by RPGs where you can pretty much do anything, Disgaea 4 will change that quickly. This is a game that actually expects you to grind. And if you don't, it WILL punish you for it. The good news is, the gameplay is engaging enough that grinding doesn't feel like a chore. Especially because going into the item world presents a unique experience each time. You won't find a lot of floors the same and the Geo Panels and Symbols are randomly generated.

Disgaea 4 hasn't changed much from its predecessors at all. Much of it will be familiar to fans. At times its more like putting on a pair of old gloves and finding they still fit perfectly. If you haven't been much of a Disgaea fan, there isn't anything here that will likely turn you into one. Disgaea probably isn't going to reach much higher. It's still unique in its own way, but at some point it may have to do more than just add on small tidbits to its gameplay.

There is one area where perhaps it wouldn't have been so bad for Disgaea to progress just a little. The presentation. The sprites here are perfectly redone in HD, but it doesn't look all that different from what you've already seen. All the artwork is pretty much exactly the same. It is definitely noticeable, however. The game gives you the option to toggle between HD and SD sprite settings. Needless to say if you're playing on an HD TV then the difference is obvious. Still, it's hard to shake the fact that even in HD Disgaea 4 looks exactly like the three games which came before it. More so than the graphics, however, Disgaea still uses isometric maps where you can only shift the perspective left or right. But you can't zoom in or zoom out or tilt the perspective. On some maps its fine but on others you might lose track of your characters or some of the enemies this way.

The music on the other hand, actually sounds really good. The voice acting may, at times, grate on your nerves, but the soundtrack isn't likely to. It fits the game perfectly. You will also hear a couple of remixed tracks from previous entries.

If you've enjoyed previous Disgaea outings then there is no harm in giving Disgaea 4 a try. The change in the story's themes may not be for everyone at first, but it still maintains a lot of its humor to make it easier to swallow. Either way, in regards to its storytelling it is certainly a step up from Disgaea 3. If you've never been into Disgaea you're not going to change your mind with this.

Before I begin, I must confess I am a die-hard sRPG gamer (Super Robot Wars to Disgaea 4). I have played all Nippon-ichi/Atlus sRPGs. My review may be a little biased; I will be comparing them to not only others in the industry, but to themselves as well.

Cons:

-Locked screen only lets you rotate, but you STILL can't change the angle or zoom in and out

-Sound track might put you to sleep after pro-longed play (Also the case in D1, D2, and D3)

-Loosely tied plot line (so far)

-No True Multiplayer. I was (and still am) waiting for the ability to play with friends online, but I was disheartened to hear about the changes made to the U.S. release. An ultra-limited map editor with no real playability is of no use to me or my friends.

-Some battles can't be conquered with strategy; making you rely on brute force aka "powerleveling"

-AI isn't very advanced; they're still very predictable (always go for easy kills first for example)[see below for balancing]

Pros:

-Graphics You can toggle between HD/SD sprites ... AND you get to change the speed of the battles

-Maps while the AI has been stagnant over three series, they have always been balanced out by randomized maps, geo-panel difficulty, and play-styles; The same enemy team you find in one map might be exponentially harder in another map.

-*VERY*Lighthearted humor, there will be lots of giggles to be had (Pretty satirical if you're up-to-date with world topics)

-The reward system is great for people who love dungeon crawling

-Character Customization A one-man-army or an army? Your choice, your playstyle.

-Customization you can customize ANYTHING; items, weapons, equipment, skills, traits

-Voice Acting It amazes me where they find some of these people. Absolutely wonderful.

Hours to Completion:

-Main Story: I'm about 8 hours in, and I don't see the end in sight. I'll update this soon.

-Bonuses: Estimated based on previous installments...maybe 20+ hours

-Custom Maps: Infinite.

-Expected DLC: ??

Replay Value: 5 out of 5, item world is the biggest contributor

Bottom Line: A very good pick-up-and-play game with a great dollar to game-play ratio. The fact that the standard edition is $10 cheaper than the regular entry price for PS3 games already makes it that much better.

I'm relatively new to Disgaea, and I haven't beaten this game yet, so I may change my review at a later date but as of right now, I am really loving this. I was skeptical because, as shallow as it sounds, I wasn't too fond of the character designs this time around, and I was wondering if the whole "demon" schtick might be getting a little old... I was wrong. I can't say that the plot is on the same level as that of previous games, but the characters are quirky and likable and the dialogue is hilarious, which is typical of this series. The voice actors are really great, the art direction is (imo) flawless, and the music is catchy and cute.

It's a huge bummer that you can only rotate the camera but can't change the angle, and the enemy AI hasn't really improved. Also, I'm not really a grinder, I hate leveling for hours on end, but if you want to get certain things then that's exactly what you'll find yourself doing. The story is a little weak at first but it shows potential. I'm loving what I've played so far, and I'm excited to play the rest... it's not often I can say that about a game recently.

I found this game decently fun. The game for the most part was what I expected of a turn-based strategy rpg. You can find descriptions of the game mechanics elsewhere, and the purpose of my review is just to give you my impressions.

1. Story: The story parodies rpgs and is light-hearted. The characters very often refer to terms like final bosses and leveling. The humor is quirky, and I thoroughly enjoyed the humor throughout the story.

2. Strategy: The game as expected is very heavy on tactics and has a lot of depth. This is especially true if you just try to go through the story mode without much grinding. Still, the game didn't feel difficult and there were only a couple of points in the story where I felt I needed to spend some hours grinding to level-up my characters to progress further. I would recommend not spending much time grinding as this will essentially remove the strategy aspect to this game. Level-up your characters or their equipment too much, and your characters will avoid almost all enemy attacks or take zero damage even if they get hit. In addition to the story characters that you can use in your party, there is a wide selection of generic characters that you can use in your battles.

3. Graphics: The main focus of this type of game is strategy, so I was not expecting graphics like Uncharted. The characters during the story cut-scenes have a lot of personality. In the turn-based battles, though, they seem more like just icons, and I found them somewhat underwhelming. For some reason, there are only a few set viewpoints for the battles which I found annoying as it wasn't always easy to tell where one character was in relation to another depending on the complexity of the terrain.

4. Fun: I found going through the story mode decently fun. In addition, there is a post-game where you can continue to level your characters and equipment and where you can gain additional characters to join your party. The story in the post-game is barebones though and seems more about just grinding to see if you can max stats to achieve trophies. I think the post-game could be better implemented as trying to get some of the achievements involves loading a game, entering battle and seeing if some rare event is randomly triggered. If not, then quit, reload and try again until the event is triggered. You literally will need to repeat this process 10 to 100 times in a roll in the hopes of triggering some events. After a while, I realized me playing the game had devolved to me just loading, quitting and reloading the game over and over again.

Overall, Disgaea was a decently fun game while going through the story. There is a good amount of strategy involved as long as you don't grind too much and over-level your characters. Characters have personality, but the graphics are somewhat underwhelming during the turn-based battles. Lastly, I really didn't find the post-game much fun as it seemed mostly about grinding.

Disgaea is one of the most well-known and beloved SRPGs in the video game industry. Now on its fourth installment (excluding ports), does Disgaea 4 continue to expand the series in new and exciting ways? After playing through the main story and dabbling a bit in the post-game content, I can confidently say yes to that question.

Disgaea 4 is a turn-based strategy game that plays on a grid. In each battle, play begins by selecting up to 10 units from the home base to move around the grid and battle against the opponent's units. By using the basic commands for each unit -Move, Attack, Skills, Defend, Lift/Throw, and Items -the player can navigate through the battlefield and accomplish the objective of the level (typically the goal is to defeat all enemy units). Of course, being a Disgaea game, this is just the tip of iceberg -those who have the desire to explore further (or anyone who has extensively played a previous Disgaea game) can choose to utilize the absolutely enormous set of features included into the game, from passing game-changing "bills" in the Netherworld Senate, to entering randomly created levels within your items to power them up, to creating, customizing, and reincarnating new characters to place them into whatever role you desire. Newcomers however shouldn't be intimidated by this -not only are most features described via in-game tutorials, but in fact most of them can honestly be ignored if completing the main story is your only goal. That said, the depth is available, and I'd highly encourage exploring at least some of it -it makes the already addicting Disgaea 4 even harder to stop playing!

The main story focuses around Valvatorez, a vampire who used to be known as the Tyrant. However, as a result of a promise he made long ago, he has forbidden himself from drinking human blood and has fallen to the lowly rank of Prinny Instructor. At first, all is well with Valvatorez's job of training the prinnies, but on the graduation day of the latest batch of prinnies, the prinnies are mysteriously abducted. Thus does Valvatorez's quest begin with the initial goal of recovering the prinnies and fulfilling the promise he made to them -to give each one a single sardine upon graduation! However, things quickly become much more complicated, and he is quickly drawn into matters that affect the entire Netherworld. The story of Disgaea 4 is quite excellent as long as you take it with the right mindset. Like all Disgaea games, the story contains plenty of humor and witty dialogue between the characters. As long as you know this and don't go in expecting a dark, serious drama, you should find it most enjoyable.

Since Disgaea 3, the graphics have had a complete overhaul, now appearing in crisp HD, though fans of the old look can still choose to utilize the old sprites if they so desire. The new sprites do an excellent job of both improving the old look as well as remaining true to the original designs -each character class still feels the same (i.e. an HD dragon still looks like the tradiational Disgaea dragon, the archer still looks like the archer, etc.), so fans can rest assured that the new designs in no way compromise the originals.

Fans of the series should also take note of some new improvements since Disgaea 3. Monster class characters have some new abilities to make them more powerful, such as being able to now use 3 evilities instead of only 2, and 2 monsters can be fused in battle to make one giant monster in its place! The magichange system has also been improved, now allowing characters to duel-wield weapons while magichanging, or even wield giant weapons when magichanging with a giant monster! New additions like this extend the already enormous replay value of Disgaea to an even greater length!

Speaking of which, newcomers should note that while Disgaea 4's main story should only take about 20-30 hours to complete, there is a near infinite amount of content during the post-game. Players can seek to battle against returning Disgaea characters to unlock them for use in their party, can level characters to 9999, and can even seek to unlock the Land of Carnage -a world identical to the normal game, but featuring significantly more powerful enemies. Those seeking to experience Disgaea to its fullest can easily get hundreds of hours of gameplay if they choose to. On a purely money to hours of gameplay ratio, Disgaea is probably one of the best deals in gameplay out there. Additionally, those who want *even more content* can choose to purchase DLC for the game, ranging from additional characters (generally cameos from other NIS developed games, such as Disgaea 3 or Phantom Brave), parts for building new levels with the level editor, and even new story chapters (which admittedly are not released yet in North America as of this writing, but should be coming within the next few months I would imagine).

Honestly, the game is packed with so much content that I could go on further, but this is probably a good place to stop. Disgaea 4 was easily one of my most anticipated releases for this year, and I am pleased to say that it is every bit as good as I had hoped for. SRPG fans in particular will not be disappointed by this game, and I would encourage newcomers to the genre to try out Disgaea 4 as well -it's a absolute blast to play and is a great way to get into the genre.

Well, what can I say? SOCOM this is NOT!!!!

OK, for the record, I miss the old SOCOM format...REALLY, I do! And for Zipper Interactive to release this game, the way it is, is just wrong!

And before you guys start bashing me, play it first, and then take a moment, step back, and ask yourself, "is this really SOCOM???"

I mean, why even make this game? There's a thousand run-n-gun type military games out there...Too many to list, actually. The original Socom format really had something different. There were NO GAMES like them! So, what does THIS GAME bring to the table, that the other shooters do not????? NOTHING!

I don't know where to start, and I'm just gonna be all over the place, as things make me angry....but, here goes:

This game is basically run, get shot at, run, get shot at, get shot at some more, and get shot at some more. If you think I'm kidding, try the game yourself!

The original SOCOM series was intense, strategic, organic, you could use a headset to use voice commands, use your teammates to help complete missions, use team mates to overwatch, command teammates to do all sorts of stuff...the original SOCOM games had SO MUCH to offer...this game????....NOTHING!!! All this cool stuff that the original SOCOM games had, is all GONE! Sure, OK, the graphics are awesome! OK? And sure, it's got a BUNCH of shooting in it...OK? but, so do a million other games out there, and graphics & shooting only goes so far. If you're looking for the old SOCOM here....well, you can forget it. The original magic of SOCOM, is forever gone.

In this game, you can forget about shooting bad guys at 300yds, and staying hidden for a while. OH NO, NOT IN THIS GAME!!! You shoot ONE TIME, ONE ROUND, WITH A SILENCED SNIPER RIFLE, and 4 million rounds just seem to find you and rain down upon you like hellfire...Tanks, rockets, bullets, grenades, missiles...everything!!! Come on???...really??? Whether you're hidden or not...EVERY ROUND & BULLET just magically finds you, instantly. Hide behind a rock...YUP, you guessed it, bullets hit you!!! This is a joke!

You can't even climb ladders in this game! So, your ability to snipe from high vantage points, is gone! Not that it would matter anyway.

Another thing.....Why do you have to complete the game for better scopes & weapons? I'm sure the real Navy Seals have to do this in real life! So, I have to complete the game to get a better sniper scope??? COME ON???!!!!! What kinda crap is this????

In a firefight, bullets come from EVERY ANGLE! You can hide behind whatever you want (Rocks, cars, trucks, WALLS), and, you guessed it! Bullets, rockets, grenades...etc...just all seem to hit you! People just appear from out of nowhere, and BAM! You're dead! It's actually laughable.

No voice commands, no strategy, no stealth, no night-vision, no missions (to speak of), no sniper shots from afar, no decent choice of weapons, no nuthin'! Just come up on bad guys & tanks, and start shootin' like mad, because that's all the game will allow you to do. Don't bother trying to hide, either...COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME!

Now, before I get flamed, and called names, yes, there are 2-3 levels in this game, in which you have to be stealthy....but, it's a joke. Shoot one guy, and once again, you either fail a mission, or get trampled by 30 guys at once with assault rifles. Hell, I've played ATARI 2600 games better than this.

This game is just like every other military shooter out there, MOH, COD, whatever! (Just not as good)....It just left a bad taste in my mouth, after being a HUGE SOCOM fan since day one. It's a real bummer to play this.....

The original SOCOM games (1, 2 & 3) really made the player feel like they were actually IN the game, and actually hiding in the bushes & shrubs. Not here.

Bottom line: I don't care what ANY reviewer says, this game sucks! PERIOD! It's a cheap, unrealistic, generic shooter, with a SOCOM label on it.

So, here's my PRO & CON list.....are you ready?

PROS:

Guns.....

CONS:

Just about everything else....

Am I being too harsh? No, I honestly don't think so. And the general public shouldn't accept this. Considering all the cool things that the original SOCOM games offered, I'm actually being too easy on the game, and the folks at Zipper Interactive!

So, to all you folks at Zipper Interactive, I ask you:

"Is THIS the BEST you guys could come up with????? If so, then I'll buy another PS2, and start playing the old SOCOM games again."

UPDATE 05-02-11: Giving the title a fourth star for two reasons: First, the U.S. Navy SEALS just killed Osama Bin Laden! That's the ultimate 'Takedown' mission...Go SEALS!! Secondly, I've been logging a lot more time with the game in 'Custom' mode. The no-respawn rule in 'Custom' forces a frustrating, but ultimately highly instructive and tactical rethink of gameplay style that fits with the game design. It's sort of like learning an instrument, frustrating until you 'get it', then it's much more rewarding. The price coming down also helps...a lot.

*****

UPDATE 06-02-11: See 'Multiplayer' notes below Singleplayer -PSN is finally running for me.

*****

Let me start out by saying that I'm almost exclusively a First Person Shooter player and almost always on an Xbox. I've logged time on (and have beaten as well) BFBC2, CoD Black Ops, and Crysis 2; I also own and have beaten CoD Modern Warfare, MW2, Red Dead Redemption, etc...

I've just gotten into the PS3 scene to get the killer Blu-Ray player and try some of the exclusive titles on it. The SOCOM series is a PS exclusive. SOCOM4 is my first taste of a shooter on the PS3 and sadly, this game doesn't measure up, and that's too bad. Granted, it's a Third Person Shooter game on the PS3, but more than close enough to compare. Gears of War and RDR are both TPS and awesome.

Having carried a real gun for the 32 years of my entire adult life from 17 to 49 in the military and law enforcement, I wanted to experience something close to actually pointing a weapon in a video game and was excited to try the PS SharpShooter system based on its reviews. I found after pricing the components locally, the SOCOM4 'Full Deployment Edition' with the SharpShooter and all the other PS Move gear actually cost less than just the hardware. Ergo, the game was free to me. So, if you got the game with the package it is an awesome deal as it's an 'OK' game. I'll review the SharpShooter in its place...although I will say it gets high marks.

As for SOCOM4, I'm not familiar with the earlier titles. They must've been good or we wouldn't be on '4'. Video games are very complex with many layers so I'll try to summarize for times sake:

SINGLE PLAYER CAMPAIGN ONLY:

GAMEPLAY: Linear! I haven't been in a more 'rail shooter' linear game in the past several years...except maybe Mass Effect, but the story there is the game. This is worse than Halo linear; as in on-screen breadcrumb sequential checkpoints that keep you focused more on playing checkpoint baseball and tagging the bases than in mission achievement.

STORY: You're a semi-stranded, cobbled together, *NATO*? Seal team on some island that could cripple global commerce if the rebels take control. I don't want to go into more detail and spoil, but if you get more out of the story your imagination is better than mine and I daydream way too much.

WORLD: I felt almost no need, or desire, to explore the developer's world. Too bad because in many arenas it seemed that the developers went to a lot of artistic trouble to make it look realistic (success) and approachable (fail). The need wasn't there since if they wanted me to see it a checkpoint would run me through it. The desire wasn't there because the game treasures were ho-hum. The ample guns lying around were hard to understand if they were better or worse than mine (frequently worse I found out) and the 'Intel' that you're supposed to pick up never seemed to give me any useful payoffs...so if I saw it, I grabbed it, otherwise I felt no remorse for missing it. I felt no desire to explore or scrounge, neither seemed to be worth the trouble. The set design seemed high until you tried engaging with anything and it just bonked as you tried to scale it, kick it, etc... Well, you could shoot the occasional bucket or the now universal red exploding barrel. If you tried to get an overwatch position to cover your troops while sending them to flank and pincer, you found out that any high ground was almost always unavailable and just a vertical 'wall' to the arena. RDR this is not. The artists did a good job, the graphics are very good and the tradeoffs fair. Good detail, high contrast, great lighting effects, all in all very good. A nice place to visit...

GUNS, BALLISTICS, AND SHOOTING: They did a good job with the guns and most terminal ballistics. The guns were beautifully rendered in game and in cut scenes showing the correct kit for the players. The sights were very well done. Optics were beautiful and real-world accurate to a point. Reflex reticles were true to life except the fact that the player-side face plates were in focus and quite distracting. They aren't in real life, they are out of focus and only the target and reticle are in focus as it should be. Small gripe. Shooting with 'irons' in third person is weird, no way around it. It's much weirder when the players own huge and opaque head is frequently in the way because the camera is behind the guy shooting the enemy (you the player). This only happens when ADS (aiming down sights). You wind up hip shooting like a noob to avoid it. There's no wind or gravity, but hey, again small gripe. Guns with scopes would recoil, but not settle...major gripe and an immersion killer. Shooting with optics moves you into FPS and seemed very good. Especially with the SharpShooter...it felt oddly real when ADS with the SS and using optics, especially scopes. This was and remains the highlight of the game for me...highly recommended for real shooters. You will get a sense of satisfaction that your years of training have FINALLY paid off in a video game; in a way no 'thumb shooter' will understand. Using an ACOG and a SS is not to be missed. Rent the game for that if you already have the gun.

Terminal ballistics and hit boxes seemed right on. A well-placed shot to a critical area was a drop, poor shots resulted in crippled, or semi-functional enemies, as expected. Well done. Black Ops could take a few lessons here. Hits were hits, misses were misses, no mysterious stuff. Sadly it seemed that ANY intermediate object would disable your shot...chain link fencing, leaves, openings between stairs, etc... All can defeat battle rifle caliber rounds and MGs, so sayeth the physics engine they're using. At least a lot of cover was destructible both ways...yet, Battlefield this is not.

AI: SQUAD: AI was good...considering that AI stinks in every game...period. The AI here has pluses (squad are skilled shooters) and minuses (squad hang back a lot and use cover oddly). I'm not usually working squads in game, so I'll be brief here...these guys will do. They are skilled, resilient (more so than the player by far), and fairly intuitive. They usually follow orders and perform better than most friendlies.

ENEMIES: Average. Enemies are appropriately skilled for the middle levels. Behavior patterns were fairly locked and predictable (weak cover skills) with some pleasant surprises (would flank or bum rush). Lethality was game-fair. Odd shots would hurt you, head shots would kill you. Enemies weren't super shooters, but weren't bullet spraying shopkeepers either. Enemy observation skills were highly variable. Sometimes you could sneak past them while looking into their eyes, or they wouldn't notice the 200 lb body you just shot landing on a tin roof next to them. Other times they would see you stealth kill a dude in the dark from a block down the street. Hard to figure.

ACTING: The acting is first rate. Voice acting is well done and usually appropriate with only occasional F-bombs. The characters don't have dramatic stories or parts, so this probably wasn't hard to get right. Motion capture looked realistic and they obviously hired real operators for some of the stuff based on movement patterns. Overall well done...a nice cake of few ingredients.

I'll add more as I wrap up the game...I just got it yesterday, but if you don't post right away nobody will see it. I might do the Multi-Player. For right now the campaign at least seems like a great training range for the SharpShooter community and little else. The story won't make you feel like you have to save the world, or your teammates (I don't even know their names hours later and don't get worked up when something happens to them), and even the PC seems like your cookie-cutter OCS Seal O-3; I've yet to identify with my own PC. He's no John Marston that's for sure. Gameplay is very dated, graphics and gunwork are good, but the effort is lost on mediocrity elsewhere. So far it's been your average garage sale...some neat stuff lost and surrounded by a bunch of same 'ole.

UPDATE: Finished the game and stand by the above review and rating...although I did shoot through a leaf, a fence, and a piece of corrugated steel to get some non-fatal hits on enemies. The game ran 10 hours with a rather casual pace and plenty of do-overs on my part. I like to experiment in-game and this results in a fair amount of 'don't do that again' deaths. Usually when playing a top-notch title, I get really antsy to get back into the game when I have to put it down to deal with real life...I didn't have those joneses with this title. The 'Custom Game' feature is pretty cool and backs up my estimation that the biggest value the game offers is as a training aid for SharpShooter practice. In 'Custom', you can pick maps, game types, and enemy bot skill levels to practice against...think: Black Ops Combat Training and you'll have a great notion of the feature.

MULTIPLAYER UPDATE 06-02-11: Finally got to play MP on this title after waiting a month (Thanks Sony...not). I'm left with mixed feelings about the whole experience. I'm retired and have a little time on my hands, so I have the luxury of playing all these cool games and their online offerings. SOCOM4 has given me some of my most rewarding and frustrating experiences of that time.

COMPETITIVE MP: I'm not going to act like I rock at this...I don't. Why? Because the default Quick Play choice places you into large maps with 32 players running around (and expecting you to run around) like an enormous Call of Duty run-n-gun fest. If you like Black Ops, you'll love this...very little if any lag...didn't see any obvious cheating (lag jerking) but it was a swarm of seemingly mindless frontal assault. Using defensive strategies such as setting up ambushes or sniping from cover, exactly the same skills that you need to survive the rest of the game are ignored wholesale in the competitive MP game. Now give even 10% of those folks mics and you can just imagine the 'fog of war' effect...except these aren't trained pros with radio discipline...they're rude, crude and loud bullet sponges. The good news is you really want to kill them.

On the smaller maps option in competitive, everyone is 'nade spamming the place. They should call it hand artillery. Tactics here are in short supply as in the big maps, just smaller and crazier. Juveniles needing their brains bathed in epinephrine will have to be talked down from the high. Not my bag.

COOPERATIVE MP: A ray of hope and glad to have found it. Imagine the 'Custom' mode, except instead of AI friendlies, you get 1-4 (more is better against 'Hard' enemies) real human squadmates and the ability for each other to revive fallen teammates. No typical respawning. If you don't get revived, you lie until all are dead or victorious. You can select mission types, maps, and enemy skill and force levels. Now tactics and skill matter. This has been the new highlight of the title for me. I have seen some incredibly good soldiering and some really stupid cowboys. Mistakes and foolish bravado will get you and others killed...fast!

The radio chatter here is relevant...enemy fire matters...speed, accuracy, and smarts are critical. When you get shot down and a squadmate throws smoke and fights guns blazing to save you, you can bet that when they go down, you'll cut down Hell's Army to save them. Topping the stats after a really tough round is immensely more satisfying than any other round of gaming I've done. This is where they should give medals. 6 stars and where I'll be from now on. I haven't been on XBL since I found this. I've met some amazing folks here from around the world, fun to play with and very efficient operators in the game. Good times...and isn't that what its all about?

i usually play with a friend online in 1st person shooters. we usually stick to black ops or Battlefield Bad Company 1& 2... ive played SOCOM before but probably like 5 years ago and never on a ps3... SOCOM 4 is very different than Black Ops & Bad Company. everybody is sayin that SOCOM 4 was tryin to be like Call Of Duty, i dont think thats the case.. nowadays games like Super Mario, Grand Theft Auto 3, the 1st MK are technically thought of as (Bad Games).. back then they were amazing ground breaking games. the creators of SOCOM 4 knew that so clearly there not going to go backwards. they had to add some features, better graphics, and basically update. i guess SOCOM fans dont like seeing that but its gotta happen sometime. i personally thought this game was very very good. the 3rd person is a nice change up, sometimes it gets a little hard to shoot when on the side of cover but not too hard. the story mode was a little cliche but stil pretty fun, theres a pretty good selection of guns and custimation for them.. i like the co-op and multi very much.. somehow in SOCOM 4 theres NO CAMPING.. there might be a guy in the same spot tryin to camp but if you know where he is its very easy to eliminate him and stop the camping... i love the bullet penetration, the way bullets go through bodys are just beautiful. the maps seem to be huge but it also seems like everybody is really spread out and no1s in groups. theres no real rendervous point, or middle of the map where people meet. and the knifing is amazing!!!!! THE KNIFING IS JUST LIKE BATTLEFIELD BAD COMPANY 1 KNIFING!!!! :), a swish kinda, not a shank or stab, makes for way better knife fights and its not based on luck or connection like call of duty... in closing i give this game a 9 outa 10.. its not perfect but for a brand new game that was $45 that comes with bonus content, its a very good deal. im really glad i bought it.

I loved this. I have Resistance 3 with the sharpshooter PSMove controller, and I wasn't pleased. HOWEVER, I AM pleased with SOCOM 4. It plays so smoothly with the PSMove. It takes a little while to get used maneuvering around, but once I got used to it, it was gold.

Granted, I miss the classic SOCOM games, where you can talk to your squad, "Bravo, breach bang and clear" to have them do exactly that to a room, but that being said, SOCOM 4 stays pretty true to the old games, however there's much more of a cinematic-type story to it. There's character development, etc. which is nonexistent in the other games.

I recommend it! My favorite part was how sensitive the gun is while trying to snipe, how steady I had to make my hands. Kudos to zipper interactive!

As many have said, this game is really different from other SOCOM games. It tries to do a few things differently but in the end it's lackluster. I have played all of the previous SOCOMs and had high expectation for this one, but unfortunately it didn't impress at all.

Cons

The squad controls have been simplified (or dumbed down) which gets mixed reviews. I personally think it made things too simple. You can only order your squad mates to move to certain location or attack a specific target, that's it. You can no longer tell them to hold fire or cover specific areas, which significantly reduces the tactical aspect of a true SOCOM game.

Stealth aspect of missions are an interesting design choice. It would have been executed much better; example, there are times where you are detected by enemies without any reason and they all swarm on you and you are dead within 5 seconds. Realistic? Perhaps. Fun or entertaining? Absolutely not!

Weapon upgrade system is highly flawed. You have no control over what gets upgraded, and the selection is very limited which is disappointing.

Story and characters are not engaging. You don't really care much about the story or the characters at all since they are not interesting.

The camera view is somewhat odd and annoying; it switches between third-person and first-person at will without reason. I find this to be distracting and unnecessary.

Multiplayer is not all that fun due to limited weapons upgrades. COOP mode had potential but you don't earn XP at all and weapons upgrade is extremely slow. Another disappointment!

Pros

Levels are generally well-modeled with good detail.

Controls are generally fine other than the camera issue mentioned previously.

Overall, I can only give this a 2 out of 5 as it did not meet expectations on any front. Hopefully the next one will be better.

the button layout is alot nicer than the normal dualshock ps3 controls. the r1 and r2 buttons have been moved down next to the normal layout, making combos alot smoother. the dpad is high quality and works alot better than the dualshock. if a stick is to hard for you, try the pad. i did and it's the best way to play.

I absolutely love this game. It is packed with new content from JK Rowling, and it delivers it in a fresh, exciting way. Hold your Move controller, and on screen it turns into a wand. The plain blue book appears on screen as an ancient spellbook. Turn the pages and watch animations appear as you learn to cast spells with your wand controller. You learn incantations, methods, and origins of the spells, and then you get to practice them before taking a test that requires you to use all of the spells learned so far.

The good things about it:

-You can log in using your Pottermore account, and access your own wand and house.

-There are about 20 spells to learn, some of which are new.

-The tests are incredibly fun, and feature a number of magical creatures.

-It was written by JK Rowling!!

-You can choose whether or not you want the narrator to read the book aloud to you.

-It is very interactive, and unlike anything that has ever been done before.

The bad things about it:

-There is no replay value. Once you work your way through, there is nothing else to do.

-You need a lot of lighting in your room, otherwise the game will glitch.

-The text that you are required to read sometimes seems a bit tedious, and it takes a long time, especially when all you want to do is just cast the spells.

-There is no free play mode to just cast spells.

-There is no multiplayer.

This game is seriously so much fun, and the technology is state of the art. Hopefully there will be a sequel with improvements, seeing how this is the first, and as of now, only, title for the Wonderbook.

You are wandering around the restricted section in the library at Hogwarts when you happen upon a book of spells written by the famous witch, Miranda Goshawk. This will be your start in becoming a true wizard at Hogwarts.

Wonderbook: Book of Spells takes you through an augmented reality world of being in Hogwarts as a new student where you will learn all the spells required to become a great wizard.

The game is split up into five chapters with each one having two sections where you will learn anywhere from one to three spells. The book will explain how the spells were created in charming stories that will be told as a pop up book on screen. After all the spells are learned in a chapter you will be given the task of using all of the spells in the chapter to complete a task. Once the final task is completed you will also be given a rhyming conundrum to listen to which is regarding the skills required to become a great wizard.

The game is fairly easy to use with the PlayStation Move and Eye. The game recommends having you sit on the floor in front of your TV cross legged with the Wonderbook placed in front of you. You will then use the PlayStation Move Controller as your wand to cast spells with.

I don't have the ideal setup since my TV is above waist height and my chair is only a few feet away from my TV. I was able to place the Wonderbook on my lap and still use it rather well though. It does make casting spells with the Move controller somewhat difficult though since my arm was so close to the Wonderbook.

Another feature that Book of Spells offers is that if you have a Pottermore account then you are able to connect it with the game and your house along with your wand will transfer over. I do not have a Pottermore account so I was not able to see how well this feature operates with the game though.

Overall I have greatly enjoyed Wonderbook: Book of Spells so far and I would recommend it to fans of the Harry Potter universe or someone who is just wanting a new and interesting game to try out with the PlayStation Move. The game might be aimed at a younger audience but can still be enjoyed as an adult as well.

I bought this game for my 7 and 9 year old kids for Christmas because they love all things Harry Potter. However, this game has been a pretty big dud around the house. Some reasons include:

(1) It's only one player so they can't play with each other or with friends.

(2) You have to follow the game script throughout. There is no free play, exploring or creativity allowed.

(3) The game was super easy for them to win and since there's no free play then it is basically over. No need for them to play again. And they haven't.

(4) Only movements are required to cast the spells so the pronunciation is pointless. Once the kids figured that out they rarely care about speaking the spells. Yet another limitation of the game.

In short, I wouldn't waste my money on this game. The initial promise of an original use of the move controller proved shallow and uninspiring.

What can I possibly say that the previous reviews have not already covered? The first COD4: Modern Warfare raised the bar for total immersive first person game play, and the on-line multiplayer mode most certainly contributed to the overall success and popularity of this now classic game. Like many, I wondered how in world could Infinity Ward improve on an already near perfect game? Modern Warfare 2 is the answer to that question. I'm sure I could sit here and write a lengthy review about every cool new aspect of the game, but you really just have to experience it for yourself. Newcomers to this franchise will be blown away, and will no doubt be exhilarated by this gaming experience. Original Modern Warfare vets will appreciate the continuing story line in campaign mode, and the vastly improved additions to the on-line multiplayer mode. I can already see that the devastating new killstreaks will be the bane of those who consistently fall victim to more skilled players in Team Deathmatch. God help us all. If you can't pick up this game just yet, you had better at least hone your skills on the original MW before entering the multiplayer arena in MW2, less you get your feelings hurt. The hardened edition is definitely worth the extra cheese if you like the extra bling. Nice steelbook hardcase with very nice cover art, plus a mini concept art book and the original COD game to boot. But in essence it's really all about the game after all isn't it? So if the extra special goodies aren't your cup of tea and you just want to get right down to it and start racking up as many kills as possible, then save your money and go for the standard edition. I'm sure the special editions may be tough to come by when Christmas shopping season hits, so get it while you can. I will not be surprised if this follows in it's predecessors footsteps and wins Game of the Year. Again.

Man this game is absolutely awesome, I truly see what all the big fuss is about. I have never played Call of Duty before but if those games in the past is 1/4 as good as this then they're great too. I'm not really into 1st person shooters but this is the best there is. The graphics are so realistic, it looks like you're playing a movie instead of a video game the weapons, voice-overs and missions are immaculate. And the multi-player is absolutely perfect I can't find anything negative about this game. I was always taught if you have nothing nice to say don't say it at all. But I have nothing but nice things to say. I will definitely recommend this to anybody who's looking for a 1st person shooter. I can clearly see why this is the most anticipated game of the year. GRAPHICS 5stars, GAMEPLAY 5stars, REALISM 5stars, WEAPONS 5stars, MULTI-PLAYER 5stars EVERYTHING 5stars. CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 2 5STARS...

Okay I am going to be as clear as I can be, this is probably the greatest first person shooter I have ever played.

Unlike most people I am going to say the bad stuff first.

The campaign is a little short in comparison to other games. So if you are a gamer who only plays the single player campaign and will never touch the online, I would rent before you buy. But I can promise you that you will enjoy the single player game.

Now onto what will keep you busy for probably the rest of your life, the multiplayer, competitve and coop. This game takes everything good from the first game and pretty much doubles it in greatness. Everything is better. You can now have 3 perks on instead of one, my favorite is the bling, which allows you to have 2 attachments. The deathstreaks are a nice touch too because they help you if you are having a bad game. So you will enjoy this mode.

Now onto the coop. This is not the full story coop, instead it is just a bunch of missions that you must complete. And they are fun none the less. They vary from killing a number of enemies, snowmobile racing, or covering your friend with a gunship.

Okay this part will be about the extras for buying the hardened edition. This is worth it because not only do you get the game but also the original call of duty.

So go out there and buy this game, unless you like missing out on a very good game.

This is a decent upgrade to the standard Rock Band guitar if you're willing to spend the extra money. The build is solid and has a heavier feel than the standard guitar. The metal whammy bar and buttons are a nice touch, and the fret buttons are quieter than the first generation guitar.

One important caveat: when first playing it, the plastic neck separated slightly and caused another click when pressing the fret buttons. This did not affect play, but was annoying (considering the price of the guitar). I performed some minor surgery by removing the screws and adding some superglue to the inside of the neck. No issues so far.

If you're looking for an attractive upgrade to your Rock Band guitar or want to annoy your wife with more fake plastic instruments, this is a good deal. Recommended.

When I received it, I was somewhat impressed. The frets seemed to be very quiet and responsive, it was the usual plastic, but had a better, quality feel to it. When I played it, I was truly shocked at how loud the strum bar was. This thing is so loud, I'm surprised my neighbor didn't knock on my door and ask what I was beating on. I live in a town home that has pretty decent insulation. I can turn up my TV/stereo up to a decent level without disturbing the neighbors. The strum bar was LOUDER than the gameplay music! You would have to have your stereo cranked up simular to the loudness of a club for the strum bar to not be a factor. How did this even go into production with the strum bar being this loud? I can't see anyone wanting to use this guitar unless they have a massive stereo system that is cranked up every time they play.
